Readings for October 13th, 2019 2 Kings 5: 14-17

Psalm—98: 1, 2-3, 3-4 2 Timothy 2: 8-13

Luke 17: 11-19 ***

If we listen to what Jesus says, we are all here to serve one another. There are many ways to do this here at St. Anne. In the liturgical ministries you could proclaim the Word of God as a Lector, or serve as a Eucharistic Minister. A step further is to be a Mass Steward, one who sets up for Mass, finds assisting persons to bring the gifts to the altar, and make sure everything is cleaned up after Mass. As an Usher you pass the basket to collect the envelopes/money during Mass, assist people looking for a seat, pass out bulletins at the end of Mass. Of course, I’m always looking for Altar Servers. If any of these are of interest to you, please call me at the parish office at 248-627-3965 ext. 107 and I will be happy to train you!

“The just one, because of his faith, shall live,” says the prophet Habak-kuk some six hundred years before Jesus’ birth. These words are taken up by St. Paul in his thesis. “In the gospel is revealed the righteousness of God from faith to faith, as it is written, ‘The one who is righteous by faith will live.” The prophet cried out to God to intervene to help his people in their desperation. His cry expresses his faith that God cares for his people and will respond. Today’s readings offer a deeper in-sight into the nature of Christian faith. In Paul’s Letter to Timothy, the Apostle encourages his disciple to “stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands.” Timothy has been en-trusted with protecting the faith of his community. Paul reminds him of the gift of the Spirit he received that brings with it a gift of boldness that provides strength to overcome obsta-cles. In the Gospel, when the Apostles tell the Lord, “increase our faith,” they are not asking for the content of their faith to be increased but for the qual-ity of their faith to be enhanced. In other words, the faith they refer to is their relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus and the disciples are concerned with the depth of their faith relation-ship. It is not the quantity of faith that is significant but the quality of the relationship with Christ. After all, as Jesus said, faith the size of a mustard seed could move a tree. Genuine faith, the depth of our genu-ine relationship with Christ, enables us to perform the impossible. (Taken from At Home with the Word)

The annual Septemberfest OCEF bake sale has just completed its sev-enteenth year! This year the sale raised $1418.50 for the food pan-try. I want to thank everyone who donated or purchased baked goods from the sale. Your generous sup-port as truly been the key to making this sale such a huge success. This is my last year of heading up the bake sale. My sister Amanda and I took it over from Heidi Fluck 8 years ago and are now passing the torch to Danielle Brown and her brother Duncan. They have been huge contributors to the sale in the past and will continue to do a great job. Thank you again for your sup-port over the years!

Thank you, Lukas Miner

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP How Much Is Enough?

During a conversation about good stewardship of money and time, my daughter shared that sometimes doing the best thing was so hard for her to do. It wasn’t always a matter of right and wrong, black and white, but a matter of better and best. I began to reflect on the truth of her statement. When confronted with a decision, we can sometimes be given a choice of good, better, and best. We fool our-selves into believing that the good choice is not a bad one, so it must be enough. However, we have essential-ly placed a limit on our generosity or commitment with our false sense of good stewardship.

Jesus calls us in different ways every day. Sometimes the cost to us is clear. Yet sometimes there is no clear met-ric. When called to love, how much love is enough? When someone needs our time, how many hours is enough? When a small gift will bring about a positive outcome, what could a larger gift accomplish?

Don’t be fooled by Jesus’ teaching of the mustard seed. He was speaking to those who were caught up in concerns of status, uncertainty of heart, and lack of true faith. Jesus taught with parables and then demonstrated true faith and generosity by his crucifix-ion. Perhaps the mustard seed of faith allows us to move mountains and trees so that we may see through to the horizon of the cross. In the cross, we find the real metric of love and generosity that is for all who follow Him. ©LPi
