Delighting in God Men and Women's Bible Study

Thursday’s 7pm

Beginning Nov. 17

Join us Thursday evenings for this men and women’s group. We begin by meeting in the church to pray the Rosary, then adjourn to the conference room for bible study. This Fall we have decided to study the book of Revelation, using Little Rock Bible Study materials. This study invites the modern reader to revisit a volatile period of history through apocalyptic, symbolic writing. Enter into the struggle be-tween good and evil, hear the call to conversion and experience God's ultimate triumph. Bring a friend and join us! All are welcome! Contact Anna Wendelschafer for more details: 248-860-4844

Tuesday Morning Bible Study Men and women’s morning bible study meets every other Tuesday. This year we are studying the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. For details please contact Brenda Todd @ (248) 627-2738

Becoming a Saint

A popular musician and worship leader Steve Angrisano often asks this ques-tion, his “pop quiz,” to his young audi-ences: How many believe you will be a saint one day? When very few in the audience raise their hands, Angrisano goes on to give his view of sainthood. The definition of a saint, he explains, is just a person in heaven. How many of us believe we will be in heaven one day? How many of us use that goal as a guide for daily living? Sometimes I find it difficult to equate my ordinary daily living with such lofty ends.

The Scripture readings for the Feast of All Saints describe the rewards of eter-nal life for those who are worthy. In Revelation 7, we hear of the great multi-tudes worshiping before the throne of God in robes washed clean in the blood of the Lamb. Later, in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus shares the Beatitudes and speaks of the many blessings be-stowed on those who are meek, merci-ful, pure in heart, and hungry for right-eousness.

What do these readings and this Feast of All Saints have to say to ordinary seek-ers like us? What do we have in com-mon with all those holy men and women listed in the canon of saints? Sainthood is for everyone who wants to do the right thing but faces the struggles and temptations of earthly life every day.

We must make a conscious effort every day to be the kind of person worthy of God’s blessing. Celebrating the sacra-ments, seeking spiritual companionship, and taking advantage of opportunities to grow in faith are some of the many ways we can continue to be the person God created us to be. In order to achieve our spiritual goals, we require the blessings that come with nurturing our spiritual life, practicing virtuous living, seeking forgiveness, and praising God continu-ously for the many gifts we have already received. It is in these ordinary human ways we continue on the path so many before us have journeyed.

Do you believe you will be a saint one day? What are you doing today to remain on the path seeking sainthood?

Worship

For several weeks the Sunday gospels have reminded us of what it means to be disciples. The passages from Luke re-counted the teachings, parables, and examples of Jesus’ ministry that shape and direct our efforts at being faithful disciples. As we near the end of Ordi-nary Time the readings shift the focus from our behavior to the action of God in the world and in our lives.

The author of Wisdom speaks of God as the Lord of the cosmos. God looks upon the world as the harvester regards the single grain that falls from the balance, the scale that measures the harvest. For the harvester every grain is important, and the author of Wisdom says that God looks upon the whole world with the same attention and care. The second analogy portrays the same attentiveness; God sees the world as though it were a single drop of dew. This is a God of immeasurable care and compassion.

In Luke’s story of Zacchaeus, Jesus ful-fills that very role; he “has come to seek and to save what was lost.” There is something amusing and even ridiculous about the plight of Zacchaeus. He is no ordinary tax collector (a group despised by the citizens), he is the chief tax col-lector. He must have been slightly em-barrassed—a person of his position hav-ing to climb a tree to see Jesus. But he sets aside any personal inhibitions and climbs up.

Then an amazing thing happens. Jesus announces that he is coming to stay at his house. Jesus becomes both guest and host at the table of a sinner.

When we gather for liturgy we believe that we encounter the Lord in the Word, in the elements of the sacrament, in the priest, and in each other. At the Eucha-ristic Liturgy the Lord is both guest and host. He becomes the meal and the host at our Eucharistic Table, and in that event of communion we are trans-formed.

BEEP BEEP……. That is the sound of the St. Vincent De-Paul truck, which will be pulling into St. Anne on Friday, November 11th through the weekend. All donations will be wel-comed.

Simply Give Campaign at the Oxford Meijer to Benefit OCEF Food Pantry For the months of November and De-cember, the Simply Give program at the Oxford Meijer will benefit our local OCEF Food Pantry. Simply pick up one of the Simply Give cards from a sand-wich board located near the checkouts at the store and take it to the checkout. Scan the bar code on the back just like any other item you are purchasing. Each time you scan the bar code, you will be donating $10.00 to the OCEF Food Pantry. But the best part is that Meijer matches it so the $10.00 dona-tion you make becomes $20.00. Better yet, November 11 & 12 are double match days when Meijer will contribute $20.00 for each $10.00 donation you make for a total benefit of $30.00. What a deal!

Meijer is very generous with their sup-port of local food pantries throughout the state wherever their stores are locat-ed. And that support is very much ap-preciated by our OCEF Food Pantry.

So when you shop at the Oxford Meijer during November and December, re-member to use a Simply Give card at the checkout to support our OCEF Food Pantry. Thank you all.

Christian Service

“Being more closely united to Christ, those who dwell in heaven fix the whole Church more firmly in holiness, they do not cease to intercede with the Father for us.” (CCC 956)

As we come together for All Saints and All Souls this week, take a moment in quiet reflection on those we have lost, and for the Saints who fought for the church in so many different ways. The determination they had for following the word of the Lord, and practicing the world of God in their daily life. They carried our Lord’s word to all people, and observing why He came into our world, and truly believing in the word of God. Sadly, their devotion some-times came to a horrific end of their life. All Saints and All Souls days can be said that they are the prayerful, spir-itual bond between those in heaven and the living.

I hope all of you will be able to attend the very meaningful Mass as we cele-brate the life of those we miss every day, and to honor the memory of all the Saints who inspire us every day with their story of faith.

Peace and blessings,

Karyn

“THE SADNESS OF ADDICTION” As we come together as a community in observance of All Saints and All Souls Day, there is nothing so sad as attend-ing a funeral for someone so young who lost their life due to addiction. This past year there have been so many of our beautiful, young people who left such grieving families behind due to an over-dose. With our eyes ever painfully be-ing opened to this problem here in our community and in our world, our very compassionate Youth Minister, Kim Zernec has put together the “Communities Combating Addiction” workshops which will be offered several times during this year and next. Addic-tion is turning into a massive problem, and if we do not come together, as a whole, and share stories, ideas on pre-vention, and keeping up with legislature agendas to help in this epidemic, I truly fear where we will be going, and my deep, deep concern on what kind of world we will be leaving our children and our grandchildren, has encouraged me to jump on board to help Kim and all the members of the workshop to do whatever I can to help this epidemic. Please, please read the flyer in this weekend’s bulletin about the first
