A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Third Sunday of Advent / December 15, 2019 “Be patient my brothers until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer awaits the pre-cious yield of the soil. He looks forward to it pa-tiently while the soil receives the winter and spring rains. You too must be patient. Ready your hearts because the coming of the Lord is at hand.” We have met the prophet Isaiah, listened to the announcement of John the Baptist and joined with Mary as the third figure of advent. All have re-minded us to prepare, ready our hearts, and reflect on what the coming of the Savior means for us today. A restless world pays little attention to the need for and presence of a Savior. Many good peo-ple pay only lip service to the Bethlehem birth as a fond memory. Hurting people are looking for the pres-ence and mercy of Jesus, which we are able to bring, but somehow, we forget our role. We do not seek a blown reed, someone luxu-riously dressed, but a prophet calling us to make the Lord’s presence known and felt. Let’s use the example given to us by James. The stores and florists are filled with poinsettias, bright reds, whites and some hybrids. The farmer must prune, water, and then cover them for specific hours to have them bloom at the proper moment. When you see a plant, remember the patient care of the farmer preparing, and then prepare yourself.

The Duties of Children If you are a son or daughter, and at least one of your parents is still alive, please seriously ponder the following teachings from our Catechism: “Respect for parents derives from gratitude to-

ward those who, by the gift of life, their love, and their work, have brought their children into the world and enabled them to grow in stature, wis-dom and grace.” (Catechism # 2215)

Filial respect is shown by true docility and obedi-ence.” (Catechism # 2216)

As long as a child lives at home with his parents, the child should obey his parents in all that they ask of him when it is for his good or that of the family.” (Catechism # 2217)

“As they grow up, children should continue to re-spect their parents.” (Catechism # 2217)

“Obedience towards parents ceases with the emancipation of the children; not so respect, which is always owed to them”.” (Catechism 2217)

“As much as they can, they (children) must give them (parents) material and moral support in old age and in times of illness, loneliness, or dis-tress.” (Catechism # 2218)

How are you doing? Is mom/or dad gifted from you with the necessary love a child should pro-vide?
