San Andrés Apóstol, 30 de noviembre

San Andrés nació en Betsaida, población de Galilea, situada a orillas del lago Genesaret. Era hijo del pescador Jonás y hermano de Simón Pedro. La familia tenía una casa en Ca-farnaum, y en ella se hospedaba Jesús cuando predicaba en esta ciudad.

Andrés tiene el honor de haber sido el primer discípulo que tuvo Jesús, junto con San Juan el evangelista. Los dos eran discípulos de Juan Bautista, y este al ver pasar a Jesús ex-clamó: "He ahí el cordero de Dios". Andrés se emocionó al oír semejante elogio y se fue detrás de Jesús (junto con Juan Evangelista), Jesús se volvió y les dijo: "¿Qué buscan?". Ellos le dijeron: "Señor: ¿dónde vives?". Jesús les respon-dió: "Venga y verán". Y se fueron y pasaron con Él aquella tarde. Nuca jamás podría olvidar después Andrés el mo-mento y la hora y el sitio donde estaban cuando Jesús les dijo: "Vengan y verán". Esa llamada cambió su vida para siempre. Andrés se fue luego donde su hermano Simón y le dijo: "Hemos encontrado al Salvador del mundo" y lo llevó a donde Jesús. Así le consiguió a Cristo un formidable ami-go, el gran San Pedro.

Al principio Andrés y Simón no iban con Jesús continua-mente sino que acudían a escucharle siempre que podían, y luego regresaban a sus labores de pesca. Pero cuando el Salvador volvió a Galilea, encontró a Andrés y a Simón remendando sus redes y les dijo: "Vengan y me siguen", y ellos dejando a sus familias y a sus negocios y a sus redes, se fueron definitivamente con Jesús. Después de la pesca milagrosa, Cristo les dijo: "De ahora en adelante serán pes-cadores de almas".

El día del milagro de la multiplicación de los panes, fue Andrés el que llevó a Jesús el muchacho que tenía los cinco panes. Andrés presenció la mayoría de los milagros que hizo Jesús y escuchó, uno por uno, sus maravillosos sermo-nes. Vivió junto a Él por tres años.

Un escrito que data del siglo III, el "Fragmento de Murato-ri" dice: "Al apóstol San Juan le aconsejaban que escribiera el Cuarto Evangelio. Él dudaba, pero le consultó al apóstol San Andrés, el cual le dijo: ‘Debe escribirlo. Y que los her-manos revisen lo que escriba’".

Una tradición muy antigua cuenta que el apóstol Andrés fue crucificado en Patrás, capital de la provincia de Acaya, en Grecia. Que lo amarraron a una cruz en forma de X y que allí estuvo padeciendo durante tres días, los cuales apro-vechó para predicar e instruir en la religión a todos los que se le acercaban. Dicen que cuando vio que le llevaban la cruz para martirizarlo, exclamó: "Yo te venero oh cruz san-ta que me recuerdas la cruz donde murió mi Divino Maes-tro. Mucho había deseado imitarlo a Él en este martirio. Dichosa hora en que tú al recibirme en tus brazos, me lle-varán junto a mi Maestro en el cielo". La tradición coloca su martirio en el 30 de noviembre del año 63, bajo el imperio cruel de Nerón.

Year of Matthew (A) - Advent 1 - November 27, 2016

St Andrew the Apostle, November 30th

Andrew’s name is mentioned only about a dozen times in all the New Testament. Yet there are some wonderful sto-ries and traditions about him that emerged in the early cen-turies, most of them apocryphal; but some of them are more than likely quite true.

One ancient historian tells us that sometime in the years following the death and Resurrection of Christ, Andrew was sent as a missionary to Sythia, which is part of present day Russia. This is why he is the patron saint of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church.

It is probable that Andrew died in Greece about the year 69 AD; and tradition has it that he was martyred on an X shaped cross, and that he bravely taught the people for two days from the cross. That cross is now the symbol for this apostle.

His name became associated with Scotland because several centuries later a Christian monk was supposed to have car-ried part of the remains of St Andrew to the shores of Scot-land, and built a shrine on the site of what is today the city of St Andrews. The saltire cross on the Union Jack, repre-senting Scotland is the symbol of St Andrew.

Andrew was already associated with John the Baptist, but when John pointed to Jesus, and said to Andrew, "Behold God's own lamb…follow him," Andrew's life from that day was changed forever more. But then notice what Andrew did immediately. He first found his younger brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah.’

In Christian tradition, Andrew is referred to as ‘Protokletos’ that means ‘first called’. In John's version of the gospel, Andrew is the first of the twelve, but the point to note is that it is Andrew who leads Peter, the Prince of the Apos-tles, to Christ.

The great gift of Andrew to the Christian Church is St Pe-ter. Also in at least two other instances in this gospel, An-drew is found leading others to Jesus.

We might say that the gift of St Andrew was the gift of the shadow. He was always in the background, never on center stage. He was an accompanist, but in this role he was cru-cial. In art Andrew is generally pictured as an old man, generally with a book and the transverse or saltire cross. He is the protector of fishermen, fishmongers, and sailors. Two nations have chosen St Andrew as their patron - Russia and Scotland.

November 30th, Andrew’s day, is the hinge upon which the liturgical year swings. The hinge for the Church’s celebra-tion of time. It is always the Sunday, nearest to Andrew's day that are the beginning of times, the end of times, in the Church’s liturgical calendar. Andrew always announces to us, ‘We have found what you have been waiting for. We have found the Liberator - the Christ’. That surely is the message of Advent.
