MOTHER'S DAY is a celebration honoring

mothers and motherhood, maternal

bonds, and the influence of mothers in

society.

The modern holiday of MOTHER'S DAY was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her

mother in America. She then began a campaign to make "MOTHER'S DAY" a recognized holiday in the United

States. Although she was successful in 1914, she was already disappointed with its commercialization by the 1920s. Jarvis' holiday was adopted by other countries

and it is now celebrated all over the world. In this tradition, each person offers a gift, card, or remembrance

toward their mothers, grandmothers, and/ or maternal figure on MOTHER'S DAY.

In the United States, Armed Forces Day is

celebrated on the third Saturday in May.

It falls near the end of Armed Forces

Week, which begins on the second

Saturday of May and ends on the third

Sunday of May.

First observed on May 20, 1950, the day

was created on August 31, 1949, to honor

Americans serving in the five U.S. military

branches – the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S.

Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force and U.S.

Coast Guard – following the consolida8on

of the military services in the U.S.

Department of Defense. It was intended

to replace the separate Army, Navy, Air

Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard

Days, but the separate days are s8ll

observed, especially within the respec8ve

services.

The first Armed Forces Day was

celebrated by parades, open houses,

recep8ons and air shows. In 1962,

President John F. Kennedy established

Armed Forces Day as an official holiday.

Because of their unique training

schedules, Na8onal Guard and Reserve

units may celebrate Armed Forces Day/

Week over any period in the month of

May

Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week is an observance in the United

States that pays tribute to the Local, State, and Federal Peace Officers. The

Memorial takes place on May 15, and Police Week is the calendar week in

which the Memorial falls.

Much of the holiday centers on the Na8onal Law Enforcement Officers Memorial wall in Washington,

D.C., whose walls feature the names of more than 19,000 Law Enforcement Officers who have been killed

in the line of duty.

The holiday was created on October 1, 1961, when Congress asked the president to

designate May 15 to honor peace officers. John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law on

October 1, 1962. Amended in 1994, Bill Clinton, through Public Law 103-322, directed

that the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff on May 15.

According to a proclama*on by George W. Bush in 2002,

"Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week pay tribute to the Local,

State, and Federal Law Enforcement Officers who serve and protect us

with courage and dedica$on. These observances also remind us of the

ongoing need to be vigilant against all forms of crime, especially to acts

of extreme violence and terrorism."

MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH

AWARENESS MONTH

It’s a time to erase the stigma of mental illness and encourage individuals, couples, and families to seek help if: 1) their symptoms cause significant distress; 2) their problems are affecting major areas of their life; or 3) their problems are putting them at risk of divorce, job loss, school expulsion or other potential losses. As one of our region’s largest providers of mental health services, CATHOLIC CHARITIES knows that at some point everyone can benefit from talking to a professional counselor. Every day our counselors (Spanish speaking available) help adults and children learn to cope with a myriad of problems that prevent a rich, rewarding and happy life.

This month we encourage anyone who thinks counseling may be helpful, to make an appointment with a licensed professional counselor. Just as physical problems typically are covered by private insurance, so too are emotional problems. Counseling at CATHOLIC CHARITIES is covered by most health insurance carriers, including the Archdiocese and Medicaid. Funding from the United Way of Greater Cincinnati provides for a sliding fee scale for non-insured clients. Anyone, regardless of age, faith or ability to pay, is encouraged to call 513-385-9600 if they think counseling may be helpful.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES has an office located in the Eastgate area at 4360 Ferguson Dr., Suite 130, Cincinnati, OH 45245 ~ Phone number - 513-752-0114.

A Mothers' Day Prayer

I thank you, Creator of us all, for my mother.

I thank you that she gave me life and nurtured me all those years. She gave me my faith, helping me to know you and to know Jesus and his ways. She taught me how to love and how to sacrifice for others. She taught me that it was okay to cry and that I should always tell the truth.

Bless her with the graces she needs and which you want to give her today. Help her to feel precious in your eyes today and to know that I love her. Give her strength and courage, compassion and peace.

Bless her this day with your love.
