IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

It is with great pleasure that Saint Joseph Parish announces that

Monsignor David C. Hubba, current pastor of Saint Joseph Church, Oradell/New Milford, NJ, has been appointed by Cardinal Joseph Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, to another term as pastor of Saint Joseph. In Cardinal Tobin’s words, “I pray that God may continue to bless you for your priestly ministry and the parish community of Saint Joseph.” Saint Joseph Parish is blessed indeed!

Even in the dreadful days of Nazi rule in Germany, the magic of spring could not be suppressed. Inge Scholl, the surving sister of

Hans and Sophie Scholl, whose young lives were taken by Hitler’s executioners after they dared to distribute pamphlets denouncing the government’s evils, said of this welcome season:

Sometimes it seemed miraculous to us that spring returned to this land at all. Spring came and brought flowers to the empty, starving, rational world. It brought hope, and the children in the streets played their age-old games.

For Catholics, May is a time to call appreciative attention to our Blessed Mother. Her singularly graced life is always to be seen in her unique relationship with her son Jesus. The great English spiritual writer Caryll Houselander, in a poem about the Rosary, summarized this so well when she wrote that

The story of Mary is her own story, and her son was her life’s joy and her life’s sorrow; and forever her son is her life’s glory.

From the moment we meet Mary in the Gospels, when the Angel Gabriel announces to her that God wants her to bring his Son among us (Lk 1, 26-38), the simple immediacy and powerful response of acceptance of the divine will that governed her life was apparent. As Caryll Houselander expressed it so beautifully, Mary’s assent was both a key part of the story of our salvation and a challenge to us to live such a life ourselves.

Our Lady said yes. She said yes for us all. It was as if the human race were a little dark house, without light or air, locked and latched. The wind of the Spirit had beaten on the door, rattled the windows, tapped on the dark glass with the tiny hands of flowers, flung golden seed against it, even, in hours of storm, lashed it with the boughs of a great tree—the prophecy of the Cross—and yet the Spirit was outside. But one day, a girl opened the door, and the little house was swept pure and sweet by the wind. Seas of light swept through it, and the light remained in it; and in that little house a Child was born and the Child was God. Our Lady said yes for the human race. Each one of us must echo that yes for our own lives.

COME ALIVE, LORD! Lord, come alive within my experience,

within my sorrows and disappointments and doubts,

within the ordinary movements of my life.

Come alive as the peace and joy and assurance that is stronger than the locked doors within,

with which we try to shut out life.

Come alive in the peace and joy and assurance that nothing in life or death can kill.

“FOLLOW ME” A Gospel Meditation—Third Sunday of Easter

"Simon Peter said to them, 'I am going fishing.'" Peter is a favorite apostle for many people. I wonder if it is because of his flawed, relatable humanity. Today's Gospel takes place after Jesus appears to the disciples and breathes the Holy Spirit upon them. And yet, Peter finds himself returning to his old way of life, to comfortable habits he formed long before following Jesus. Is something still lingering in him? Is something still lingering in us? Lent is over, and we should be rejoicing! But do you feel like you're still holding onto something? Or perhaps you had an excellent Lent. You encountered Jesus in a new way and grew in faith. But as the weeks since Easter have slipped by, some of your newfound devotion has begun to waver. The closeness you felt in your Lenten commitments has given way to humdrum status quo or turn-of-the-season busyness.

"'Simon, son of John, do you love me?'" Peter has endured so much in his walk of discipleship! But something is still weighing on him. In today's Gospel, Jesus confirms Peter's devotion three times, a redemption of his earlier threefold denial. The call of the Lord must

come again, as if heard anew for the first time. So often, this is the pattern of the Christian life. We discover God and experience a new desire for our faith, but in time, our enthusiasm begins to wane. Perhaps something happens that startles us, or we startle ourselves by a poor decision. Then we discover God anew! Our joy returns...for a while. Even the Apostles were no strangers to the cyclical nature of spiritual growth. Our disappointments or frustrations should not be cause for giving up. Like Peter, we too can recommit and start anew. This Sunday and every day of our lives, Jesus is waiting to say again, "Follow me."
