Rector’s Forum in May
We are on a
journey, and
while that
journey may feel
slow, we are
walking. Most
importantly, we
are doing so
together...
Welcoming the Future by The Rev. John P. Leach
The main proposition of the
Journey class that I teach sug-
gests that our lives are not a
linear or horizontal walk to a
particular destination, but
rather a circuitous back and
forth, up and down slog,
walk, trot or run depending
upon the circumstances in our
lives. I’ve certainly written
and preached about that con-
cept on many occasions.
Now, viewing our Welcoming
the Future campaign as a
journey, that metaphor is
quite appropriate. As we have
been very intentional in our
plans, proposals and presenta-
tions, we (the Vestry and I)
continue to be prayerful and
discerning in our next steps.
We are grateful for your pres-
ence and participation along
this journey toward imagining
our future as a vibrant and
life-giving community for
those seeking a deeper rela-
tionship with Jesus.
The data we gathered during
the Feasibility Study, includ-
ing our potential for giving to
a capital campaign provides
us with another opportunity
to assess our journey and our
direction. You expressed pri-
ority be given to a new educa-
tion building which gives us
adequate meeting space for
ministry meetings, class-
rooms, nurseries, and room
for an additional adult Sunday
school offering. This would
also allow us to repurpose
some of our existing space to
meet the needs of the choir.
Frankly, all of this space is
needed now, not just in the
future. We just don’t have the
space we need for all that we
are doing, and certainly not
for all that we could do.
The leadership of the Vestry
should be commended as
they consider all of our op-
tions for taking the next step
in this journey. Crossroads
can be disorienting places, but
their commitment to making
good and difficult decisions
reveals a courageous grace
which is greater than risking a
hasty and uninformed choice.
My respect for their patience
in this process and their open
discussions abounds.
We are on a journey, and
while that journey may feel
slow, we are walking. Most
importantly, we are doing so
together inviting more input,
wisdom and the enthusiasm
that comes with following
God. We are a community of
faithful and generous souls,
and we will continue to ask
for your participation and
your embrace.
Peace, John+
Rector’s Forum takes place
each Sunday between morn-
ing services, at 10:15 a.m. in
the Parish Life Center.
During May, Rector’s Forum
will meet on May 1st and May
8th. During these sessions,
our speaker will be Mr. Bob
McBride. Bob is the son-in-
law of beloved departed pa-
rishioners, Ed and Peggy
Moore, and has been a good
friend to a number of parish-
ioners here at Holy Apostles
for many years. Bob will
speak to us about the history
and beliefs of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day
Saints, also commonly
known as the Mormon
Church. This should be an
interesting and informative
two week discussion.
When we begin one morning
service for the summer on
May 15th, we will suspend
Rector’s Forum until two
morning services return on
August 21st.

Reading with the Rector Tuesday, May 17th at 6:30 p.m.
Our May selection for Read-
ing with the Rector is the
novel The Homecoming of
Samuel Lake, by Jenny Wing-
field. Described as Southern
Gothic, this novel is the story
of the Moses family. Every
first Sunday in June, members
of the Moses clan gather for
an annual reunion at "the old
home place," a sprawling hun-
dred-acre farm in Arkansas.
And every year, Samuel Lake,
a vibrant and committed
young preacher, brings his
beloved wife, Willadee Moses,
and their three children back
for the festivities. In the midst
of it all, Samuel and Willad-
ee’s outspoken eleven-year-
old daughter, Swan, is a bright
light. Her high spirits and
fearlessness have alternately
seduced and bedeviled three
generations of the family. But
just as the reunion is getting
under way, tragedy strikes,
jolting the family to their
core.
Please join us as we meet for
a lively discussion of the book
(and snacks) on May 17th at
6:30 p.m. in the conference
room. All are welcome to
participate. Please contact
Eileen Cashbaugh
([email protected]) with
any questions.
Reading with the Rector will
take a break in June and July,
and return in August. A list
of the book selections for the
remainder of the year can be
found on the Holy Apostles
website.
Newcomer Liturgy May 8th
Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 15:7
Please join us for our services on May 8th and participate in a Newcomer Liturgy. The liturgy
will allow recent members to solidify their relationship with Holy Apostles and for current
parishioners to express commitment to their growth with us and with the Lord. If you are
new to the church in the past four months or so and would like to participate, please contact
Tiffany Siegel ([email protected]).
Newcomers Reception
On Tuesday, April 5th, a great
crowd turned out to visit
with recent newcomers to
Holy Apostles. The New-
comers Committee would
like to thank everyone who
attended for providing deli-
cious food and good compa-
ny. A special thank you goes
to Niki and Jim Shaheen for
graciously welcoming all into
their beautiful home!
It was truly a wonderful
evening of fun and fellow-
ship! Newcomers in attend-
ance included: Diane and
Rick Henry, Julie and Sean
Montgomery, Christina and
John Ogle, Andrea and Da-
vid Sedlacek, Andrea and
Stan Smith, and Beth and
Tom Webb. You will find
more of their pictures from
the reception on the back of
the newsletter. When you see
them in church, please take a
moment to introduce your-
self and continue to welcome
them into our parish family.

Waffle Shop Outreach We would like thank all the wonderful volunteers who made our participation in the Calvary Lenten Waffle Shop a success, and especially Donna Buckley for helping to organ-
ize all the volunteers. We pro-vided a serving team each Tuesday and Friday, plus a dessert group each Thursday. It was a wonderful opportuni-ty to get together with fellow
parishioners while supporting outreach in our greater Church community. In addi-tion, we received $469 for use in Holy Apostles Outreach Ministries.
Lenten Food Drive - We CAN Do It! And we did! Our Lenten Food Drive was a huge success. We collected over 3.000 pounds of food - enough for 2,400 nourishing meals for the 350 client fami-
lies of the Collierville Food Pantry. Joyce Sogga, Director extends her sincere thanks and says “we hold the people of Holy Apostles in high re-
gard for the sustained love and support for their fellow human beings they show through their generosity…”

abandoned Honduran girls. If you would like to honor someone or remember a
special event, you may order flowers through the online signup at the Holy Apos-
tles website, or by completing an order envelope and placing your name on the
