Pastor’s Letter

THE ONLY WAY TO GET MORE OUT OF MASS IS BY PUTTING MORE INTO IT (Part 2)

I wrote in last weekend’s article that the Sacrifice and Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist is like a precious jewel, and the liturgy of the Mass the finely-worked gold setting that holds it, not giving it its intrinsic value, but enhancing its value in the eyes of the one who looks at it. So, it’s not the liturgy – the setting – that should be our focus in “getting anything out of Mass,” but the Eucharist itself – the jewel.

The Holy Eucharist as Sacrifice-offered and Sacrament-received bring us in contact with God’s own love for each one of us and with thus confers meaning and purpose on everything that goes to make up our lives and conscious activity. The people entering into the Promised Land were told that “… they shall not appear before the Lord empty-handed” (Exodus 16:16 [15-17]); so also us. Whenever we approach the altar-table of the Lord we can’t come empty-handed if we want to truly be a part of what God is doing at Mass. We need to bring the fruits of our labors to do God’s will in our daily lives: our efforts, our successes and our failures, our concerns and our hopes, our burdens and our joys, our thanksgiving and our prayers of petition for God’s help and blessing on what lies ahead. So, what does God do with all of this? Here is the key to “getting out of Mass what we should: in offering to God every aspect of our lives – our very selves – we open our lives to God’s presence, guidance, blessing and power, and to the greater understanding of God’s will and God’s ways in our life.

Finally, the “Amen” we say when presented the Holy Eucharist at Communion is not only a personal affirmation of faith in the true Presence of the body, soul, humanity and divinity of Jesus Christ in the appearances of bread and wine, but a re-affirmation of our commitment to the covenant relationship that God has entered into with us in the body and blood of his own beloved Son, Jesus Christ.

God is never outdone in generosity, and in the measure we allow God into our lives in this way, the more we will perceive his goodness and get more out of Mass.

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS FOR NEXT SUNDAY, 10TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME:

Genesis 3:9-15 We pick up the ongoing read-ing from the Book of Genesis following the Fall of Adam and Eve from grace through their sinful disobedience. “Passing the buck” of responsibil-ity for one’s own poor choices doesn’t help. God here promises to provide the only true remedy: a savior.

2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1 St. Paul reminds us that “what is seen is transitory, but what is un-seen is eternal,” and therefore directs our thoughts and attention to seek that “dwelling not made with hands, eternal in heaven.”

St. Mark 3:20-35 This rather chaotic scene may seem familiar to anyone who tries to bal-ance family, job and one’s own needs. It is a re-minder to us all not to lose focus on what really matters both by judging rightly and by striving to do God’s will in it all.

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him, says the Lord (John 6:57)

Language Arts Academy

Greetings from Language Arts Academy,

your new tenant! My name is Kevin Ward, and I am the Executive Director of the school, a K-3 charter school that plans to expand to preK-6. Our focus is English language acquisition, and we are planning ways to help a wide range of students to listen, talk, read, and write in English. In particular, we are hoping to assist students learning English as well as students who are deaf/hard of hearing.

At the same time, we are a charter school -- free and open to all students. We know that our approach to English language acquisition -- a literacy rich classroom environment that helps students to develop vocabulary and grammar across the curriculum every day -- will support the learning of all students.

That is why we invite members of the Church of the Holy Childhood to learn more about Language Arts Academy. Our first open house was Wednesday, May 23.We showed the design sketch of our model classroom, answered some of the basic questions parents have, and had members of our board and curriculum committee on hand to share why they are excited about the school. We will conduct tours/open houses throughout the summer on Tuesday mornings 11am-1pm and Thursday evenings 6pm-8pm.

This is such a great opportunity for students, their families, and the staff of a brand new school to build a school together. We hope you will join us!

If you cannot make our tour/open houses, please contact Kevin Ward at 612-405-3429 or [email protected] to schedule time to talk, to take a tour, and to find out how you can help us find the students for our brand new endeavor.
