THE SHEPHERD’S FLOCK In Christian art, the earliest depictions of Jesus Christ were not of his crucifixion or of his resurrection. The first known renderings of Jesus show him as the Good Shep-herd, the image put before us in today’s readings. In the Gospel passage Jesus reveals that he is the shepherd and his followers are his “flock.” In the first and second readings, we are told more about the flock. The passage from Acts assures us that both Jews and Gentiles are called to follow Jesus. It is faith, not birthright, that makes us part of the company of believers. In the passage from the book of Revelation we learn that the flock that follows this Lamb of God will also be washed in his blood. They will endure a time of trial before they enjoy eternal life. Be assured of the promise, we are told, but know there is a price to be paid. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Transfiguration’s CYO children are not only about putting a ball in the hoop. They are also about putting some badly needed food into some empty stomachs. On April 7th, our 3rd Grade Girls Team donated their time, talent and treasure for “Kids Against Hunger”. The girls were able to feed 2,376 needy children. We are Blessed to have these wonderful, caring young people, and their parents, in our parish. God Bless you All!

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#129 Person to person We should not think, however, that the Gospel message must always be communicated by fixed formulations learned by heart or by specific words which express an absolutely invariable content. This communication takes place in so many different ways that it would be impossi-ble to describe or catalogue them all, and God’s people, with all their many gestures and signs, are its collective subject. If the Gospel is embedded in a culture, the mes-sage is no longer transmitted solely from person to per-son. In countries where Christianity is a minority, then, along with encouraging each of the baptized to proclaim the Gospel, particular Churches should actively promote at least preliminary forms of inculturation. The ultimate aim should be that the Gospel, as preached in categories proper to each culture, will create a new synthesis with that particular culture. This is always a slow process and at we can be overly fearful. But if we allow doubts and fears to dampen our courage, instead of being creative we will remain comfortable and make no progress whatsoev-er. In this case we will not take an active part in historical processes, but become mere onlookers as the Church gradually stagnates. Fr. Terry’s Remarks—The message of the Gospel, that God would become one of us. That He would die for us. That He would rise from the dead forgiving and redeem-ing us. All of this is very hard to believe and practice in the first place. If we go on to present this extraordinary Revelation to people in a foreign and dead language, to-gether with customs that are sometimes repellent to peo-ple we are trying to convert, any common sense person would say: “we must be weird or crazy”. Yet this is what we have done for centuries with surprising success. Thank God for the unremitting power and help of the Ho-ly Spirit. Pope Francis is begging us today to stop tempt-ing the Spirit and to help instead. St. Paul says: '' I'm all things to all men'' so that he could get people to accept the Gospel more readily. Today change is so rapid that even parents have difficulty communicating with their own sons and daughters. All around us, in our own towns and cities, we have new "cultures", new ways of expression, new worlds as it were. We don't need to travel to faraway lands to find ourselves isolated and strangers. Pope Fran-cis tells us the Gospel must be shared in ways that are proper- a strange word in today's world some of us may think - to each culture. Remember in the old days we thought the customs, the cultures of people in foreign lands were barbaric? Now we relish their foods, now we dance to their music, now we admire and pay big bucks for their artifacts. Fr. Ricci SJ. pray for us.
