Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 18, 2020 “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Cae-sar, and to God what belongs to God.” — Matthew 22:21

(continuation from last week’s bulletin…) Fratelli Tutti

“Fratelli Tutti” (“Brothers all”), the new papal encyclical on fraternity and social friendship, is an important teach-ing document that must be read by anyone who wants to know where Pope Francis is coming from. 2. You’ve heard much of this before The second thing to note about the encyclical is that much of it repeats what Francis has said before. Quotations make up more than a fourth of the encyclical, with 288 footnotes to lead the reader to their sources. Here Francis is like an op-ed writer who, after seven years of writing, has decided to repackage his work and present his thoughts in comprehensive and systematic way. Those who have been paying attention will recognize in the encyclical the principles that guide Francis’ papacy. For those who have not been paying attention, the encycli-cal will be a grand introduction to the thought animating this papacy. There may also be a theological strategy behind all of these quotes. By incorporating past sayings from homi-lies, speeches and statements into an encyclical, one of the highest levels of teaching in the church, he raises their authority. Surely he had this in mind when he quoted ex-tensively from last year’s Abu Dhabi agreement (https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2019-02/pope-francis-uae-declaration-with al-azhar-grant-imam.html) with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb. These citations are now the official teaching of the church. 3. You’re not going to be shocked The third thing to note about the encyclical is that there are no bombshells. He avoids mentioning the topics the media likes to write about. He says nothing about internal church issues. He mentions abortion only once in passing. There is noting about LGBTQ persons and little about women. What he does say about women is positive: “The organi-zation of societies worldwide is still far from reflecting clearly that women possess the same dignity and identical rights as men.” He also condemns violence against wom-en and human trafficking. The encyclical sees men and women as equal partners in dealing with the world’s prob-lems. The encyclical does express strong views on capital pun-ishment, war and economics, but the pope writes with nu-

Dear Parishioner, On November 2, we will be celebrating the feast of All Souls’ Day … officially called The Commemoration Of All The Faithful Departed. We will have a live stream Mass at 12:00 Noon. It’s hard for many of us to separate All Souls Day from All Saints Day. It is after all a two day celebration of the Communion of Saints. This feast of All Souls is an opportunity to continue our tradition, from the days of the earliest Church, of remem-bering and praying for, the souls of all who have died in Christ for their eternal rest in peace. Believing that Christ died and was raised from the dead, opening the gates of heaven to us, we also recognize that even those who die in light of faith may still be in need of purification. Our prayers, and the prayers of all people throughout time, assist them on this final step of the journey toward heaven. And so this solemnity—The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed — is very aptly named. We will gather to recall our own departed loved ones, but also to com-memorate all those who have died in Christ: Countless souls from countless generations, from near and far, old and young, friends and strangers, who have been recon-ciled by the love of God. And so we pray together … Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord And let perpetual light shine upon them May they rest in peace. And may the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God, rest in peace … Amen In Christ, Fr. Mario L. Borges Pastor

Fratelli Tutti continuation… ance. He offers no simple solutions, instead encouraging Dialog and inclusion: Everyone must be brought into the conversation and decision-making process to deal with the world’s challenges. (to be continued on next week’s bulletin …. Editor)

St. Vincent de Paul Friends of the Poor Walk

This year the Annual St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) Friends of the Poor Walk will be virtual. Volunteers from our par-ish SVdP will be safely walking individually in their neighborhoods. Seven volunteers will be walking, along with Fr. Terry, and all walks will be completed by Octo-ber 24. You can support our walkers by mailing a check to the Church, or by dropping it off in the mail slot at the Rectory. All donations will be used to help the needy in our community, including many children and the home-less. Please make your check out to St. Vincent de Paul. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Need Prayer? If so, our St Vincent de Paul members would love to pray for your intentions. Go to the St Vincent de Paul Society page on the parish website under “Parish Minis-tries.” Fill out the short form at the bottom of the page, submit your request, and our 20 members will pray for your intentions. If you would like to join us, please con-tact Mike Dresen ([email protected]). Prayer is Powerful!

WORDS AND ACTIONS When people hear us speak God’s word, they marvel at its beauty and power; when they see what little impact it has on our daily lives, they laugh and poke fun at what we say. —Anonymous second-century Christian

IN GOD ALONE Isaiah speaks to us today of Cyrus, King of Per-sia, anointed by the Lord. God calls Cyrus by name and leads him in service to the Israelites. In this passage we hear that it is the Lord who gives Cyrus his title, who arms him against his enemies, and who opens doors and unbars gates before him. And God does all of this so that the people will know that “I am the Lord,” and that “there is none besides me” (Isaiah 45:6). Paul opens his letter with essentially the same notion—that in God alone we find our grace and peace. Paul also gives thanks to God on our behalf, calling to mind our work of faith, hope, and love. And in the famil-iar Gospel reading, Jesus tells the Pharisees to give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LAUDATO SI’ OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

THE WISDOM OF THE BIBLICAL ACCOUNTS

#72 The Psalms frequently exhort us to praise God the Creator, “who spread out the earth on the waters, for his steadfast love endures for ever” (Ps 136:6). They also invite other creatures to join us in this praise: “Praise him, sun and moon, praise him, all you shining stars! Praise him, you highest heav-ens, and you waters above the heavens! Let them praise the name of the Lord, for he commanded and they were created” (Ps 148:3-5). We do not only ex-ist by God’s mighty power; we also live with him and beside him. This is why we adore him. Fr. Terry’s Response: When we come to reflect on or look for solutions to problems that confront us it makes a huge difference on how we see ourselves in the scheme of life and existence. This is why Pope Fran-cis keeps reminding us of our importance and status in the whole of Creation. In the Psalms, we con-stantly rejoice and sing of the glorious status that God has given us to love and care of our world. We are not only worthy to love and respect our own selves, our intimate relationship with Creation as-sures us we are not lonely islands but that we have the honor and duty to cherish and protect the world around us. When we feel helpless, let us sing or re-cite the Psalms and feel the love and power of God inspiring and driving us.
