August 30, 2020 It seems that Jesus is pretty hard on Peter in today’s Gospel, when he calls him “Satan” for questioning Jesus’ prediction of his passion. The scene echoes Matthew’s story of the temptations of Jesus (4:1-11) when Jesus encounters Satan, also called the “temper.” Satan had sought to draw Jesus into think-ing about his own needs instead of attending to God’s purposes. Peter was an unwilling tempter, anx-iously reacting out of his own fears and misunder-standing. This story speaks about Jesus’ identify and vocation, and also about our own. As God’s beloved, sent out to witness to the gospel, we are offered a foundation and a purpose to our lives. There is much in life that tempts us, stirs up false fears, or draws us to the at-tractive but superficial. Jesus provides us a way for-ward. He named the temptations that he faced, so they had no power over him. As he followd his path, he placed his full trust in his Father.
GOD OF DIALOGUE
Our reading from Jeremiah contains some of the harshest language you will find in the Bible toward God. In despair and fury, Jeremiah accuses God of deceiving and abusing him. He pours out his rage at God for ruining his life. He wants to quit God, but finds it impossible. In later verses, he alternates be-tween giving thanks to God and wishing he had nev-er been born. Remarkably, after all this, Jeremiah resumes his prophetic ministry. As with Abraham (Genesis 18), Moses (Exodus 32), Job, and various psalms, Jeremiah pushes back against God. God receives and blesses their prayer, and their relationship is stronger for it. Our God is a God of dialogue, who encourages us to speak our mind and heart in full honesty. Our Trinitarian God is in eternal conversation within God’s self, and with all of creation. God invites honest dialogue, always grounded in love, within God’s Church, and between the Church and the world. Copyright © 2020, J.S. Paluch Corporation, Inc.

THE CROSS OF JESUS The perception of a cross changed dramati-cally after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was de-grading. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence contain-ing the word “cross.” But all that changed with Je-sus. Over time, believers began to venerate and hon-or the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved im-ages of it. Many lost their own lives for their associ-ation with it. Today our reverence for and relation-ship with the cross recalls little of the contempt orig-inally associated with it. As it has been through the ages, it is our perception of the cross that determines how we follow Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Saint Vincent de Paul Collection Transfiguration’s St. Vincent de Paul chapter contin-ues to provide support at a distance during this pan-demic to those in need in our parish. Thanks to your donations, we recently distributed 21 school back-packs to those in need in our local community. We continue to receive calls for help, especially for food, rent assistance, and from the increasing number of homelessness. THANK YOU for your ongoing sup-port as we continue to help those in our parish who count on, and are very grateful for, our assistance. We could not assist them without your generous sup-port.

Fruits of the earth and sea — Through which You give us
Enjoyment, nourishment and strength.

And may all the farmers, fishers, Harvesters, and merchants whose labor
Helped bring us this meal Participate in Your manifold blessings

LAUDATO SI’ OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS
ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME
THE WISDOM OF THE BIBLICAL ACCOUNTS
#65. Without repeating the entire theology of cre-ation, we can ask what the great biblical narratives say about the relationship of human beings with the world. In the first creation account in the Book of Genesis, God’s plan includes creating humanity. Af-ter the creation of man and woman, “God saw eve-rything that he had made, and behold it was very good” (Gen 1:31). The Bible teaches that every man and woman is created out of love and made in God’s image and likeness (cf. Gen1:26). This shows us the immense dignity of each person, “who is not just something, but someone. He is capable of self-knowledge, of self-possession and of freely giving himself and entering into communion with other persons”. Saint John Paul II stated that the special love of the Creator for each human being “confers upon him or her an infinite dignity”. Those who are committed to defending human dignity can find in the Christian faith the deepest reasons for this com-mitment. How wonderful is the certainty that each human life is not adrift in the midst of hopeless cha-os, in a world ruled by pure chance or endlessly re-curring cycles! The Creator can say to each one of us: “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you” (Jer 1:5). We were conceived in the heart of God, and for this reason “each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is necessary”. Fr. Terry’s Remarks:
Today Pope Francis addresses what Scripture, what Revelation tells us about ourselves. Immediately we can see how infinitely important each of us is, both in ourselves and in our possibilities. The moment we begin to realize and accept our roles in Creation we begin to catch a glimpse of the deep relationship be-tween our own selves and creation around us. The story of Creation is conveyed to us in such a manner that just as we are conceived and formed in our mothers' wombs so we were formed and contin-ue to live now in the womb of our Mother Earth and by extension the whole Universe. We know what happens to us when we turn our backs on our bio-logical mothers, how can we expect better outcomes if we chose to abuse and neglect our other moth-er. This week let us meditate on our God given gifts and pray for the grace to come home.
