Yi has been instrumental in skilling & placing 1300 youth
under the aegis of its Employabilityprogram. Under the
Healthcare initiative, over 175000 children have been
dewormed in addition to many other health awareness
programs across the community in different cities. Within
the sphere ofEnvironment, Yi conducts Green I contest to
encourage and motivate school children to bring out
sustainable green campuses through ideas, campaigns for
tree plantation, solid waste management projects,
involving citizens and children in the process. Yi is also in
the process of planting one million saplings across the
country through its One Million Tree Project.
The Next Practices platform of Yi brings an opportunity
for students and members to engage in a structured
discussion to bring out of the box ideas and evolve
solutions to common problems. This is implemented
through the Blue Ocean Dialogue and the Packet of
Seeds. Yi strives to engage members and students in
cultural activities like musical concerts, visiting to heritage
monuments for learning, traditional dinner, celebrating
the 100th year of the Indian National Anthem and
initiatives that connect the youth with areas inclined
towardsArts, Sports and Culture. Yi engages around
10000 people each year during the World Heritage Week.
Yi is one of the proud founders of the G20 Young
Entrepreneurs Alliance which is a collective of leading
entrepreneurially-minded organizations representing the
G20 countries who seek to promote youth
entrepreneurship as a powerful driver of economic
renewal, job creation, innovation and social change and
took a strong delegation from 16 Indian cities to the
Young Entrepreneur Summit at France in 2011. Yi also
hosted the G20 Leadership Assembly in New Delhi in
January 2012 that had the Presidents and Sherpas of the
G20 countries.
Yis international engagement extends to being one of the
proud founders of the Commonwealth Asia Alliance of
Young Entrepreneurs (CAAYE) which is a network of
young entrepreneurs and the organizations that support
them. It has been established to continually promote the
cause of young entrepreneurs in the respective countries
and will convene each year and in advance of the
Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting &
relevant Commonwealth Ministerial forums to provide a
platform to present a united voice of young entrepreneurs.
Yi is also represented on the Boao Youth Forum that hosts
forums for leaders from government, business and
academia in Asia and other continents to share their
vision on the most pressing issues in the region and world
at large.
Yi has organized learning missions to UK, China,
Singapore, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Malaysia, Sri Lanka,
Israel, Turkey, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zambia. It has also
worked with the Planning Commission of India in
conducting consultation workshops across its chapters for
accumulating a youth perspective to be included in the12th Five Year Plan and with the Ministry of External
Affairs, Government of India to facilitate missions of
visiting delegations of young entrepreneurs to India from
around the world.
Yi also undertakes special projects and initiatives at the
chapter level such as celebrating the 100th year of the
Indian National Anthem, volunteering for the Joy of
Giving Week, World Food month and many more.
The National Summit of Yi is a yearly feature that helps
the young minds to connect with people and
organizations that have displayed excellence through their
work and stand out as an inspiration to the youth today.
Retreat to places of tourist and historical importance gives
members an opportunity to meet in an informalatmosphere and network to enhance the organizations
reach and value.
With nine years of glorious past and decades ahead that
promise nothing short, Yi intends to become a larger
movement of young people and promote the attitude of
We Can, We Will.
Young Indians (Yi) is an integral part of the Confederation of
Indian Industry (CII), a non-government, not-for-profit, industry
led and industry managed organisation playing a proactive role in
India's development process. Yi was formed in the year 2002,
with an objective of creating a platform for young Indians to
realise the dream of a developed nation. Yi has around 1200
direct members in 24 city chapters, 80 members through the
Infosys Corporate Chapter (InfYi) and around 12,000 members
through its district chapter, Farmer Nets and Student Nets.
Yi membership includes young progressive Indians between the
age group of 25 & 40 and comprises entrepreneurs, professionals
and achievers from different walks of life. To become the Voice
of Young Indians Globally being the vision of Yi, it provides a
platform for young Indians to participate in and contribute by
becoming an integral part of the Indian growth story.
Yi works effectively for promoting leadership skills for the
development of its members through the learning programs and
missions to companies of global excellence in India and abroad;
the development and engagement of students through its 93
Student Net platforms that has 5578 students; and the Farmers Netplatform that has enrolled more than 8500 young & progressive
farmers providing them with real time agricultural inputs and
know-how.

YOUNGINDIA
Young India is about
Standing Tall
When a person thinks of India, the image that instantly appears is perhaps that of lit tle man who
inspired a nation to win its independence in an ingenious and non-violent manner.
Non-violent struggle is one of the most valuable contributions of India to the world. The world
has drawn inspiration and strength from the Indian experience.
This is by no means this nations only contribution. From mathematics to medicine to
astronomy, architecture, irrigation, agricultural practices and the arts, ancient India has set its
stamp of excellence. The wisdom that bloomed in this land sends out its fragrance even today.
Because young India believes th at it can and that it will.
While young Indians have recognized that they are the torchbearers of a great history and
civilization, they have pledged to be worthy of that great heritage and are themselves
successfully working towards making the world a better place. From creating amazing
businesses to definitive contribution to arts, politics, medicine, technology, sports and a host of
other disciplines, the young Indian is the symbol of a new resurgent India that is taking its
rightful place in the comity of nations.
It is to these torchbearers and trailblazers that we dedicate this report.

I had an opportunity to work closely with Young Indians
(Yi) during my Presidentship with CII. Yi, as an
organisation has been doing phenomenal work since its
inception in 2002.
I am very glad to be writing this note for the annual report
of Young Indians, an organisation that I hugely admire forthe work they do and the impact they make on the youth
of our country. I was with them in Coimbatore recently to
speak at their National Summit and it was aptly titled
Taking Charge I am sure there was a lot of thought put
into getting this as the theme and I am glad that they had a
theme that was compelling, true to todays time and with
a punch.
I think Yi, as an initiative by CII is a wonderful platform
for young people of this country to work on nation
building and I am sure their scope of activities and impact
numbers are on the rise each year.
We have enormous strengths. We have a terrific
demographic advantage compared to any other nation in
the world. All of you know this. We, by nature, have a
high savings rate compared to most parts of the world. We
have embraced capitalism with some good checks and
balances. We have come some good distance since
liberalization. Our economy is on a sound footing. Our
fundamentals are strong. Our passion for performance is
higher than anywhere else that I have seen. This is our
central story. We must find a way to travel this journey
with great opportunities ahead.
My generations biggest achievement is bringing
economic liberalization to this country and to put India on
the road of progress and process of reforms. But, in my
opinion, the journey has just begun and Young Indians
need to take this forward. And as we take this forward,
there are some areas that I would like to have the
attention of youngsters today:
First, entrepreneurship is important and it is very important
to think big, in numbers and reach. Indias demands will
only get bigger in the years to come and its time that we
cultivate more job givers in the years ahead. I understand
that Yi is already working with over 100 institutions around
the country and this is great. Please continue to do so and
cultivate the habit of thinking beyond limitations amongst
todays students. India is filled with opportunities to those
who believe in it.
Second, I strongly believe that young people must attack
corruption in every way possible. Corruption has distorted
India and many decisions, policies and practices. All of us
have witnessed the urge of the youth in supporting people
and movements that have come against corruption and
you must carry on fighting against and attacking it in its
roots; in a democratic way. We must imagine how much
better we would have been if there was no corruption.
Again, working with the students on this is important, to
bring them up as responsible, ethical and transparent
people.
Fourth, you must favour pushing of reforms in the country
without which, India will find it difficult to effectively
fight on a level playing field and get its due share. I think
the various governments in the states and the centre are
keen to involve the youth; you must use this as an
opportunity to make your voices heard and thereby get
the policies that are important and crucial to propel
Indias growth.
I congratulate the Young Indians for all their excellent
work and for showing passion and commitment in nation
building I can only say that there is no other
organisation like Yi in India with so much depth,
diversity, reach, commitment, dedication and involvement
in nation building and coupled with the parentage of CII,
Yi can only grow from strength to strength. I have had the
pleasure of following Yis work closely during the
National Council meetings of CII and on my interaction
with some of their office bearers.
I would like to end my message with a note that I had
written on a plaque that was given to me after my address
at the Yi Summit and it goes as:
Young Indians are doing an outstanding contribution to
India and the building of a stronger India. I would like to
see Yi become a much bigger and a much more inclusive
organisation that will have the power, influence and
independence to shape the minds and policies of India. I
would like Yi to believe in democracy, to believe in doing
good for the society, to take steps in rooting corruption
and to push the reform process in India. The India growth
story needs to be carried forward with vigour by Yi to
make India as the foremost nation in the world by
realising the enormous potential of its people.
May I take this opportunity to stand up and applaud the great
work of Young Indians last year led from the front by Mr
Shankar Vanavarayar as the National Chairman and all those
who formed part of his team. Remember to always think,We Can, We Will and stand to deliver it in all forms!
Thank you.

My generations biggestachievement is bringing economicliberalization to this country andto put India on the road ofprogress and process of reforms.
Third, think of the society. Think of Business as a social
entity and as part of the society. The shareholders are not
the only owners of business. The larger society, who may
not have put in money directly, are very much owners of
the business. Yi as an organisation must take this as one of
their important agenda items and this must continue; tohelp people in need, to give comfort and love to the
disadvantaged who are so by not fault of theirs, to educate
and feed as many children as you can and to provide
medical assistance to the elderly.

8/2/2019 CII's Young Indians 2011-12 National Annual Report
7/77
The world is going through exciting times in the last few decades
its a boundary less world and full of opportunities and along
comes issues that one needs to tackle and I am glad that India is in
the thick of things playing a proactive role in positively impacting
the economy of the region and perhaps the world at large. With
47% of India's current 1 billion population under the age of 20
and teenagers among them numbering about 160 million, India is
expected to become a younger nation as we proceed into the
21st century. By 2015, Indians under 20 will make up 55% of the
population and their engagement with India and the world is
extremely important.
The Young Indians have had a great last 12 months engaging a
wider section of the society around different parts of the country
and for me, it signifies many things and wish to highlight a few
pointers here;
First, such engagements between youngsters of India is no longer
an option, its a necessity. An interconnected world like today
calls for such engagement models and will bring in people for a
common inclusive agenda. To share best practices, to engage in
new business models like tapping the huge potential in rural India,
to serve a common purpose of basic education and tacklingpoverty and to jointly work towards a better India.
Secondly, reforms are playing an important role in the
world today. We are seeing crisis in some parts of the
world, that directly impacts the other side of the universe
and therefore you must connect and discuss a lot more
on the need for reforms in our country and for the region,
that will take the world forward. The world leaders want
the opinions and involvement of the youth in nation
building.
Thirdly, India needs more entrepreneurs and this is an
important agenda that Yi is working on its very close to
CII as well. CII will continue to play an important role in
pushing this agenda forward and in also working with the
Young Indians on this point. India today has the best
competitive atmosphere for this to happen and Yis must
make full utilisation of this opportunity. How Young
Indians will use their skills to push into new markets will
largely determine Indias emergence as a winner among
other competitive countries.
It is heartening that Yi has acted on all these points
through their initiatives under the verticals of learning,
education, environment, healthcare, arts (sports & culture)and next practices & in the process, engaging the students
and farmers. While my appreciation goes to the excellent
work carried out by Yi in these areas, it is great to note the
amount of work on the international front from being
one of the proud founders of the G20 Young Entrepreneur
Alliance and hosting the G20 Leadership Assembly at
New Delhi, for partnering with the Commonwealth Asia
Youth Centre to form the Commonwealth Asia Alliance of
Young Entrepreneurs, for the mission to Singapore and the
representation at the Boao Forum in Hong Kong and at
the Commonwealth Business Forum, Australia.
It has been a pleasure to have been part of some of these
delegations and to personally witness the energy of Young
Indians and the worlds keenness to engage with the
youth of India. This must be harnessed to share and learn
from the youth around the world. Now that Yi is part of
two global partnerships, I would recommend that these
partnerships and connect are taken by Yi to the next level
of engagement.
India, as a land of diversity, democracy and dynamics has
recorded excellent progress over the past ten years and
the forthcoming decade will test us on many counts on
inclusive growth, economic growth and social growth
and the role of Young Indians will be extremely valuable
we will need equitable growth, low-cost resourceful
innovation & management and focus on next practices
as drivers of growth together with the responsibility of
brand building, ethical progress and sustainable
inclusiveness.
Message from
Director General, CII
Chandrajit BanerjeeDirector GeneralConfederation of Indian Industry
I am glad that India is in the thickof things playing a proactive rolein positively impacting theeconomy of the region andperhaps the world at large.
Yi will continue to be an integral part of CII & we look
forward to engaging with Yi in more platforms in the years
to come. I was present at Yi National Summit last year at
Coimbatore and could experience their energy and
passion to work with commitment and dedication for
India and this was aptly put into demonstration by the
theme of their summit which was Taking Charge. Like I
had mentioned in my message last year, the Young
Indians are sending out a strong signal to inform and
engage as against command and control.
I wish the Yi members to take charge of more areas with
the, We Can, We Will attitude and CII is totally
committed to making it happen. I wish to congratulate
Shankar, Anupama, the entire team of its Governing
Council and all members of Yi around the 24 chapters for
the excellent year they have had and wish them all the
very best for the future.
With the Young Indians and a country that is and will
continue to be young for many more years, none of us in
India and the world can expect any less and its with pride
that I have written this note witnessing the impact that Yi
continues to make for Indias progress.

Namaskar!
This is an incredible moment in the history of India.
During the next decade, the energy of a 100 million
young Indians will make this planet a finer place. One in
every six working persons will be a Young Indian. Today
the world sees India not only as a repository of the worldswisdom but also as the indispensable engine for its growth
- half a billion young and energetic minds that are heirs to
a rich tradition of creativity, enterprise and wisdom.
The information revolution has thrown open a whole new
world (literally) to the Young Indian. Once lack of capital
and the tyranny of closed doors held him back. Not any
more. Now creativity alone can catapult us to un-
imagined heights. The Young Indian has embraced the
ones and zeros of the digital world and multiplied them
into tens, hundreds, thousands, and millions . . . to
capture new horizons.
I write this message for the Yi Annual Report in a year that
has been momentous, consolidating, energized, far-
reaching, innovative and filled with experiences and
friendships. Everywhere I went the mention of Young
Indians generated immediate interest and the excitement
about what we are doing was palpable. Yi as an
organisation is proud to claim its simple but significant
role in giving Young India the confidence to take on the
world.
Now to the specifics. 2011 - 2012 has been an active,
interesting and inspiring year. We have had close to 500
events and this means that Young Indians and our
Executive Members have been working on high energy
and engaging themselves in the mission of Yi with
passion. When we began the year, our goal was to be
impactful in actions, awareness and advocacy. This
aspiration has been realized, with Yi impacting over
4,00,000 people directly and indirectly. Yi has
consolidated its membership, added another chapter in
Ludhiana and has begun the groundwork for the
formation of more chapters. If I have to sum up the year
so far, I would say it has been a year of targeted high
impact, involved action and decision-making,
international emergence, extensive information-sharing
and life-altering experiences.
Friends, so much has been done and much more will be
happening in the future. The passion for India, belief in
the future and faith in possibilities is what makes things
happen and this is very true for Yi too. This is the soul, but
its the inspiring involvement and leadership of hundreds
of Young Indians that breathes life into the soul. Many ofyou have shown and stood up for something that I believe
is the enduring truth and vision of Yi, and that is placing
India above the Individual. From Tiruvananthapuram to
Kashmir and Nagaland to Goa, Young Indians have stood
tall to declare that the nation is above self. I salute this
commitment and urge you to inspire many more so that
we may quickly realize our dream of a Strong India. I
have resisted the inclination to mention many of your
names and the many excellent projects/actions only
because of the fact that Yi is more about "We".This is a
moment to reflect and rejoice about what we have
achieved and also to resolve for greater commitment in
the years to come.
Here I must mention the enabling role of CII and also the
spirited executive team that worked brilliantly. The beliefof CII President Mr. Muthuraman and support of
Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee has only encouraged me to do
more. Many in CII saw promise in us and specially the
commitment of Virendra Gupta, Mahesh and now
Thulasiraj.
Not too long ago I received a call to align with Yi. It has
been a journey of evolution, learning and an amazing
array of experiences, people, projects and thoughts. I
cannot forget the people who got me and encouraged me
on this great trip. I have been fortunate in the support and
friendship of many and this had made it easy and possible
to achieve our goals. The Yi Core Group's strength behind
the rganization, the encouragement from my immediate
predecessors and of course the amazing relationship that I
had with the Governing Council and working relation
with the Secretariat. With all of this behind me, I would
not have done much without the belief of my family, who
almost gave me up to Yi during the year. Also friends and
the organizations that I work and represent held Yi in such
high esteem that they saw my absence as a righteous
commitment for the Nation.
They too placed Nation above! It would be interesting to
look back on my social media interactions during the year
which in a way, document this landmark year of my life.
The year to come will be fascinating, I am sure, with an
even more passionate and impactful organization being
put together by Anupama and Srikant. Anupama has beenof constant support and had given me the liberty to act.I would like to conclude by reminding ourselves that we
are truly a historic generation. We are witnessing history
in the making, and indeed, *we* are making history!
Decades ago the Mahatma gave a call for Poorna Swaraj
and a generation gave us our rightful liberation and now is
the time, friends, for our generation to move India into the
next orbit. Our time has come and it is in our hands to
make the future, one that will ensure for every citizen and
the nation true freedom, dignity and progress. The time to
quote our rights has passed and it is now the moment to
talk about our duties. Yi, my friends, is our medium to
script our dreams and make them real for India. Let us not
only build a nation or a region but show the world that
there is an Indian way and that this is the way of the
future.
For India, and for the World, We can, We will!
Jaihind!

8/2/2019 CII's Young Indians 2011-12 National Annual Report
9/77
I am very happy to be writing this note for the Yi annual
report 2011-12 and I must confess that this has certainly
been a strong year for Yi on all fronts. I want to share
with you all that my association with Yi has been of
immense value to me. I have always believed in the
potential of Yi as an organization and I am proud to say
that in the past four years of my association with Yi,starting as the founding chairperson of the Yi
Chandigarh chapter to now, I am witness to Yis strong
growth. New chapters and verticals have been added,
the number of people we impact has increased, and the
nature of our impact on the eco-system has also
magnified. We were already on our way to becoming a
force in India but that did not stop us from taking on the
international challenge. Now, we are exceptionally
well-placed in the international area as well. All this has
been possible because of the passion and commitment
of the young people of India, who have come forward
and volunteered to be part of Yi. They have not
hesitated to contribute their ideas and time, for
developing this nation.
As Yi continues to grow and evolve itself, it is importantthat we look at ways to increase its reach and influence
in our eco-system. In this regard partnerships with key
organizations can play an important role. As an
organization we were born when India was changing at
an unprecedented pace. Our journey has been short,
but it is unique in many ways. We have much to share
with our potential partners -- our diverse experiences,
our challenges and our successes. Today we are well
positioned to forge a mutually beneficial bond with our
partners and together create a strong impact. Shankar
and his team have worked hard at the integration of Yi
with CII in all the chapters and at Yi national. I hope to
take it further.
We are all aware of CIIs work on various areas for the
business sector and beyond. It is only natural for Yi to
capitalize on their phenomenal work as it is parented,
mentored and supported by CII. To this effect, I am glad
to share with you that the base is strong and we have
got outstanding support from Mr Chandrajit Banerjee,
and his senior team of Deputy Director Generals andSenior Directors in CII. The office bearers of Yi chapters
will continue to be part of the CII Zonal / State Council
and collaborate with the CII office bearers at each
location to exchange ideas. We have much to learn
from each other.
I have been part of the National Council Meetings last
year along with Shankar and have had the pleasure of
speaking about our work and sharing the Yi highlights.
It is humbling to say the least whendistinguished industry veterans take the time to
understand what Yi is doing. It is most encouraging to
receive their complements and their suggestions on
what can be done better. Showcasing Yi work,
informally and formally at the highest Council of CII is
important for Yi and we hope to continue to avail of this
opportunity.
Our international work has seen a new high as has been
mentioned by many others in this report and as you will
see in the pages to follow. Today we have direct linkswith Yi like organizations in 28 different countries, and
it is only getting stronger. We have a unique
opportunity before us, to extend the reach and depth of
our international linkages and make Yi The Voice of
Young Indians Globally. We intend to continue to
expand this area in the coming year and we hope that
this effort will benefit each member of Yi.
The other days in the national calendar and the national
events that we do each year will continue with the same
spirit whether it is the national summit or the national
retreat or if it is the world environment week. These
days have been observed by all chapters in the past year
and celebrated with great enthusiasm. I strongly believe
that the all chapters are an integral part of national andnational is part of all chapters; together we complete Yi.
I would like to congratulate Shankar, all the members in
the GC, and each and every member for their
contributions in making Yi such a great organization.
We have had a wonderful and meaningful 12 months,
thanks to all of you. It was an absolute pleasure working
with Shankar. He is a true friend and more than that, a
great Young Indian. His dedication and commitment to
Yi will always be remembered and appreciated by all of
us. I shall look forward to his advise on Yi in the future.
I look forward to working with each one of you and
with the leadership of CII, in the year to come, to make
Yi an organization that all of us are truly proud of. I am
sure Shankar will be involved in Yi just like the other
past Yi national chairmen we have had. A very warmwelcome to Srikant Suryanarayanan, in his new avatar
as the National Vice Chairman of Yi I am looking
forward to working with him.
I will be meeting all of you shortly. Let us together
work towards increasing the relevance and impact of Yi
and make it an organization that is valuable and
meaningful to all its stake holders. Your involvement
and encouragement will be my best support.
We can, We will.

Out of the many things that comes to ones mind when we

Though this profession seems to be simple, it is actually a

old and has become integral to the cultural life of this city.

Akshaya Patra Foundation at Vizag was launched three
years ago in Auto nagar and its Head office is at
Bangalore. It runs a mid-day meal program for Govt.
Schools, Hospitals, etc... Feeding over 5000 childrens in
vizag. 50 employees help in the kitchen to prepare the
food. It has various equipments for preparing food like 4
rice cookers each has capacity of preparing 110 kg of rice,
grinding machine, rice filter machine, etc YI Members
found it very useful.
The history of Akshaya Patra Foundation starts with a story
of compassion. Looking out of a window one day in
Mayapur, a village near Calcutta, His Divine Grace A.CBhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada saw a group of children
fighting with street dogs over scraps of food. From this
simple, yet heart breaking incident, came the determination
that: No one within a ten mile radius of our center should
go hungry. It is his inspiration which helped them to create
The Akshaya Patra Foundation as it is today.
It began this initiative with the vision that No child in
India shall be deprived of education because of hunger.
In June 2000, it started our mid-day meal program in
Bangalore by feeding 1500 children in 5 schools. At that
time there was no State run school meal program in
Karnataka. Within a few short weeks they had received
hundreds of requests from teachers who expressed the
dire need of such a scheme. This over whelming response
was the impetus for the growth of The Akshaya Patra
Foundation. In November 28, 2001 the Supreme Court of
India passed an order which mandated that: "Cooked mid-
day meal is to be provided in all the government and
government-aided primary schools in all the states."
Akshaya Patra was called in to give testimonies to the
Supreme Court in order to implement the mandate. By the
time the Ministry of Human Resource Development
(Department of School Health and Education) extended its
support to this noble cause in 2003, Akshaya Patra was
already reaching out to 23,000 underprivileged children
through the support of our donors.

Save the Sparrow is an emergency initiative taken up to
support and save the Little Feathered Friends in various
ways. House Sparrow Passer domesticus is one of the small
gregarious bird which is closely associated with human
habitations and is distributed in most part of the world.
The decline of population works with combinations of
factors like pollution & loss of habitat generally and
specifically the bushes and bio fences, non availability of
food sources like grains as well as insects, urbanization
towards breeding ground etc.

Yi (Erode Chapter) made One Lakh Seed Balls with the
Students of CS Academy in the month of August 2011. It
is a part of the Yi National Plant a Life Campaign, formerly
known as One Million Tree project.
The Plant a Life campaign, which targeted the plantation
of a million trees this year, aims to ramp up its plantationnumbers exponentially to Ten Million Trees next year and
One Hundred Million Trees annually by the year 2015.
The process takes a fraction of time or cost of other
methods to cover large areas & is also applicable in small
areas. It also replenishes the soil nutrients. The clay
mixture consists of 60% red clay. Clay is used because it
can compactly hold seed after it is dried.
Any variety of plants can be used. The variety of flora is
kept in mind while doing afforestation. In Erode, nearly 19
varieties of seeds which are locally available & suitable for
afforestation in Sathyamangalam Forest areas were used.
