TRANSITIONING TEAM-BASED PROJECTS TO THE ONLINE ENVIRONMENT
Jim Littleton School of Computing
When Jim Littleton an instructor in the UNF School of Computing moved his Legal and Ethical Issues in
Computing course online the main challenge was whether the major assignment in the course a team-
based research project could be organized and facilitated online
During the first attempt Littleton ran the team-based research project online in a manner similar to the

Anthropology and Social Work uses visual
methods including photovoice in her research Photovoice is a qualitative research strategy that invites
participants to explore concepts through digital photography Pfister uses photovoice in her research
investigating identity and language socialization among deaf youth in Mexico City Mexico She also
saw potential for using this strategy as a way to invite her students to explore and analyze themes and
concepts in her Fall 2015 Introduction to Anthropology course Click here for the rest of the story

SUPPORTING A FLIPPED INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL WITH PROGRAM-WIDE CLICKER ADOPTION
William Ahrens Kathaleen Bloom Linda Connelly Cindy Cummings School of Nursing
Although student handheld response systems aka ldquoclickersrdquo are used at UNF in a variety of disciplines
each semester no one has committed to this teaching tool quite like the School of Nursing faculty In a
bold move that has paid off for both faculty and students they are the first on campus to adopt clickers
program-wide Their faculty voted for this program-wide adoption in order to implement interactive lecture
techniques provide students and instructors with more timely feedback facilitate discussion of difficult
topics and better manage routine classroom tasks
ldquoA lot of us are flipping the classroom so our classes are now filled with case studies discussions and
highlights of the most important portions of the material rather than just lecture and clickers are helping
us do that more effectivelyrdquo says Cindy Cummings Associate Professor of Nursing at UNF Click here for

USING CLASSROOM RECORDING AND SURVEYS TO PROMOTE REFLECTION IN PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS
Karen Patterson Exceptional Deaf and Interpreter Education
Dr Karen Patterson chair of Exceptional Deaf and Interpreter Education teaches a classroom management
for exceptional learners course in which students develop a personal philosophy of classroom management
and use strategies that promote a safe classroom environment This past summer Patterson had the opportunity
to teach the course in a classroom that supported lecture capture and she used that technology to both
capture her own instruction and to provide students with an opportunity to complete a structured reflection
of their presentation and classroom management style Click here for the rest of the story

Video Services
CIRT made several enhancements to its audio
and video capacity this year adding lavalier and
boom microphones to improve our audio quality
and a 4k camcorder that provides four times the
resolution of regular HD camcorders
The flexibility of green screen technology in the
Video Studio allowed us to support the American
Sign Language (ASL) Educator Endorsement
Certificate in its transition to a fully online
program The studio was used to create a series of
instructional videos that merged PPT slides faculty
live video and 3rd party video content See an
example here
3D Services
Our 3D-printing expertise was featured on First
Coast News Jacksonvillersquos local NBC affiliate
station A CIRT staff member was invited to
discuss the 3D printing services available at CIRT
and UNF explaining processes showing examples
and addressing misconceptions
CIRT expanded our 3D services by adding a 3D
scanner Biology professor Dr Kelly Smith utilized
the scanner to make a digital model of a particular
oyster shell down to the tiniest detail for use in her
research While it would be impossible to find five
identical shells in nature she was able to digitally
print identical shells to use in an experiment about
the effects of different water conditions

Online Program Course Development
During the past year the ID Team developed 10
program-based online courses for four different
online degree programs and began development
of two new online programs the Doctor of Clinical
Nutrition and the Interprofessional Graduate
Certificate in Healthcare Informatics
Liaison Program
CIRT created an instructional design liaison
program to provide communication channels
develop relationships and promote dialog with
the academic communities that we serve During
the Fall 2015 semester emails were sent to all
Department Chairs with the offer to have an
instructional designer attend a departmental
meetings to discuss our instructional design
services and general topics related to online
learning at UNF Those emails resulted in
four visits to departments Economics and
Geography (CCOB) School of Computing (CCEC)
Communication (COAS) and Music (COAS)
Publications and Presentations
During the past members of the instructional
design team presented at five national
conferences and published one article in a peer-
reviewed journal For more details view the CIRT
Staff Publications page
ldquo The material during TOL 6100 was a good
mixture of pedagogical theory and specific
online teaching strategies The application of
those theories was presented well and helped
to increase my understanding of the online
environment and develop a course that meets
the learning objectives and maintains student
participationrdquo
ldquo I really enjoyed the workshop and working
with the outstanding team of instructional
designers Through participating in the
workshop I also learned how an online course
works as a student Great experiencerdquo
CIRT provides an array of instructional
design services to support UNF
faculty with the systematic process of
designing developing and delivering
instructional materials To meet the
needs of our faculty we have a group
of highly motivated and experienced
instructional designers

Unique Faculty Interactions
ONLINE LEARNING SUPPORT TEAM
The Online Learning Support Team (OLS) provides
a high level of care and support to UNFrsquos faculty
so that they can focus on teaching and learning
rather than technical issues The OLS team
assists faculty with LMS needs including technical
support training and course building assistance
They are available to help seven days a week with
email support on weekends During the past year
the OLS Team has added support for the Online
Learning Laboratory to its areas of service
Canvas Transition and Migration
The investigation and subsequent implementation
planning for Canvas as the new institutional
LMS is a key project that started in Spring 2016
CIRT partnered with ITS in the development of a
transition plan and developed both face-to-face
and online training offerings for faculty In May
and June alone 28 workshops were offered and
attended by 222 faculty members
A major piece of the transition is support for the
migration of course content from Blackboard to
Canvas As instructors are trained in Canvas
The OLS team assists with migrating Blackboard
course content To accommodate varying needs
we provide four methods for migrating content by
individual consultation through the Migration Boot
Camp or an auto-migration (transfer of content
performed by CIRT) with or without course clean up

ONLINE LEARNING SUPPORT TEAM
The Online Learning Support Team (OLS) provides
a high level of care and support to UNFrsquos faculty
so that they can focus on teaching and learning
rather than technical issues The OLS team
assists faculty with LMS needs including technical
support training and course building assistance
They are available to help seven days a week with
email support on weekends During the past year
the OLS Team has added support for the Online
Learning Laboratory to its areas of service
Canvas Transition and Migration
The investigation and subsequent implementation
planning for Canvas as the new institutional
LMS is a key project that started in Spring 2016
CIRT partnered with ITS in the development of a
transition plan and developed both face-to-face
and online training offerings for faculty In May
and June alone 28 workshops were offered and
attended by 222 faculty members
A major piece of the transition is support for the
migration of course content from Blackboard to
Canvas As instructors are trained in Canvas
The OLS team assists with migrating Blackboard
course content To accommodate varying needs
we provide four methods for migrating content by
individual consultation through the Migration Boot
Camp or an auto-migration (transfer of content
performed by CIRT) with or without course clean up

services to meet the non-instructional needs of
students in these programs DLSS provides a
single point of contact for students in fully online
degree programs and is an additional resource for
students taking distance learning courses Through
a comprehensive website distance learners have
access to a variety of student services including
advising tutoring financial aid registration
and career services as well as policies forms
tutorials and other resources
DLSS Collaborations
In partnership with other service units DLSS
promotes the development of innovative
approaches to supporting students online During

courses and supported ACE in their delivery of
online advising and tutoring
Student Online Learning Orientation (SOLO)
The Student Online Learning Orientation (SOLO)
is designed to prepare students for some of the
challenges associated with distance learning
The orientation contains two main areas of focus
effective strategies for online learning and a basic
overview of the Blackboard Learn system In July
2016 SOLO moved to Canvas to expose students
to the new learning environment
DL students are encouraged to complete SOLO
to prepare for the online experience and many of
UNFrsquos fully online programs require completion of
SOLO upon admission to their programs Faculty
are encouraged to require SOLO completion for
their DL courses in order to improve retention
in those courses During the past year 3043
students completed SOLO representing a 41
completion rate of students taking one or more
online course(s)

TRANSITIONING TEAM-BASED PROJECTS TO THE ONLINE ENVIRONMENT
Jim Littleton School of Computing
When Jim Littleton an instructor in the UNF School of Computing moved his Legal and Ethical Issues in
Computing course online the main challenge was whether the major assignment in the course a team-
based research project could be organized and facilitated online
During the first attempt Littleton ran the team-based research project online in a manner similar to the
way he implemented in the classroom He assigned the project let the teams work on their research
throughout the term and had the teams present the results of their research at the end of the term

Anthropology and Social Work
Dr Anne Pfister Assistant Professor of
Anthropology in the Department of Sociology

Our 3D-printing expertise was featured on First
Coast News Jacksonvillersquos local NBC affiliate
station A CIRT staff member was invited to
discuss the 3D printing services available at CIRT
and UNF explaining processes showing examples
and addressing misconceptions
CIRT expanded our 3D services by adding a 3D
scanner Biology professor Dr Kelly Smith utilized
the scanner to make a digital model of a particular
oyster shell down to the tiniest detail for use in her
research While it would be impossible to find five
identical shells in nature she was able to digitally
print identical shells to use in an experiment about
the effects of different water conditions

the learning objectives and maintains student
participationrdquo
ldquo I really enjoyed the workshop and working
with the outstanding team of instructional
designers Through participating in the
workshop I also learned how an online course
works as a student Great experiencerdquo

Unique Faculty Interactions
ONLINE LEARNING SUPPORT TEAM
The Online Learning Support Team (OLS) provides
a high level of care and support to UNFrsquos faculty
so that they can focus on teaching and learning
rather than technical issues The OLS team
assists faculty with LMS needs including technical
support training and course building assistance
They are available to help seven days a week with
email support on weekends During the past year
the OLS Team has added support for the Online
Learning Laboratory to its areas of service
Canvas Transition and Migration
The investigation and subsequent implementation
planning for Canvas as the new institutional
LMS is a key project that started in Spring 2016
CIRT partnered with ITS in the development of a
transition plan and developed both face-to-face
and online training offerings for faculty In May
and June alone 28 workshops were offered and
attended by 222 faculty members
A major piece of the transition is support for the
migration of course content from Blackboard to
Canvas As instructors are trained in Canvas
The OLS team assists with migrating Blackboard
course content To accommodate varying needs
we provide four methods for migrating content by
individual consultation through the Migration Boot
Camp or an auto-migration (transfer of content
performed by CIRT) with or without course clean up

high-quality online materials that combine audio
or video elements with content The OLL has
the capability to record video lectures and even
annotations made to content via a touchscreen TV
An interactive projector and whiteboard with audio
only is also available in this new space From its
opening in November 2015 through June 1 2016
there were 573 hours of booked usage for content
creation
Blackboard Support and Administration
During the past year CIRT assisted more than
500 unique faculty members in 3900 interactions
as shown in Figure 4 up nearly 15 from the
previous year These interactions include general
technical support assistance with course set up

courses and supported ACE in their delivery of
online advising and tutoring
Student Online Learning Orientation (SOLO)
The Student Online Learning Orientation (SOLO)
is designed to prepare students for some of the
challenges associated with distance learning
The orientation contains two main areas of focus
effective strategies for online learning and a basic
overview of the Blackboard Learn system In July
2016 SOLO moved to Canvas to expose students
to the new learning environment
DL students are encouraged to complete SOLO
to prepare for the online experience and many of
UNFrsquos fully online programs require completion of
SOLO upon admission to their programs Faculty
are encouraged to require SOLO completion for
their DL courses in order to improve retention
in those courses During the past year 3043
students completed SOLO representing a 41
completion rate of students taking one or more
online course(s)

Video Services
CIRT made several enhancements to its audio
and video capacity this year adding lavalier and
boom microphones to improve our audio quality
and a 4k camcorder that provides four times the
resolution of regular HD camcorders
The flexibility of green screen technology in the
Video Studio allowed us to support the American
Sign Language (ASL) Educator Endorsement
Certificate in its transition to a fully online
program The studio was used to create a series of
instructional videos that merged PPT slides faculty
live video and 3rd party video content See an
example here
3D Services
Our 3D-printing expertise was featured on First
Coast News Jacksonvillersquos local NBC affiliate
station A CIRT staff member was invited to
discuss the 3D printing services available at CIRT
and UNF explaining processes showing examples
and addressing misconceptions
CIRT expanded our 3D services by adding a 3D
scanner Biology professor Dr Kelly Smith utilized
the scanner to make a digital model of a particular
oyster shell down to the tiniest detail for use in her
research While it would be impossible to find five
identical shells in nature she was able to digitally
print identical shells to use in an experiment about
the effects of different water conditions

Canvas Transition and Migration
The investigation and subsequent implementation
planning for Canvas as the new institutional
LMS is a key project that started in Spring 2016
CIRT partnered with ITS in the development of a
transition plan and developed both face-to-face
and online training offerings for faculty In May

attended by 222 faculty members
A major piece of the transition is support for the
migration of course content from Blackboard to
Canvas As instructors are trained in Canvas
The OLS team assists with migrating Blackboard
course content To accommodate varying needs
we provide four methods for migrating content by
individual consultation through the Migration Boot
Camp or an auto-migration (transfer of content

Unique Faculty Interactions
ONLINE LEARNING SUPPORT TEAM
The Online Learning Support Team (OLS) provides
a high level of care and support to UNFrsquos faculty
so that they can focus on teaching and learning
rather than technical issues The OLS team
assists faculty with LMS needs including technical
support training and course building assistance
They are available to help seven days a week with
email support on weekends During the past year
the OLS Team has added support for the Online
Learning Laboratory to its areas of service
Canvas Transition and Migration
The investigation and subsequent implementation
planning for Canvas as the new institutional
LMS is a key project that started in Spring 2016
CIRT partnered with ITS in the development of a
transition plan and developed both face-to-face
and online training offerings for faculty In May
and June alone 28 workshops were offered and
attended by 222 faculty members
A major piece of the transition is support for the
migration of course content from Blackboard to
Canvas As instructors are trained in Canvas
The OLS team assists with migrating Blackboard
course content To accommodate varying needs
we provide four methods for migrating content by
individual consultation through the Migration Boot
Camp or an auto-migration (transfer of content
performed by CIRT) with or without course clean up
