  • 35 O, remember, my son, and learn wisdom in thy youth; yea, learn in thy youth to keep the commandments of God. 36 Yea, and cry unto God for all thy support; yea, let all thy doings be unto the Lord, and whithersoever thou goest let it be in the Lord; yea, let all thy thoughts be directed unto the Lord; yea, let the affections of thy heart be placed upon the Lord forever. 37 Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good; yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day. • D&C 121:34-36 34 Behold, there are many called, but few are chosen. And why are they not chosen? 35 Because their hearts are set so much upon the things of this world, and aspire to the honors of men, that they do not learn this one lesson 36 That the rights of the priesthood are inseparably connected with the powers of heaven, and that the powers of heaven cannot be controlled nor handled only upon the principles of righteousness.
  • Slide 13
  • D&C Section 121:41-46 41 No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned; 42 By kindness, and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guile

  • President Gordon B Hinckley Any man who is a tyrant in his own home is unworthy of the priesthood. He cannot be a fit instrument in the hands of the Lord when he does not show respect and kindness and love toward the companion of his choice. Brethren, let us be good men as those favored of the Lord with a bestowal of His divine power upon us. Reaching Down to Lift Another, Priesthood Session of October 2001

  • "The Apostle Paul provided sound counsel to guide our performance: 'Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity' (1 Timothy 4:12). "Remember that the mantle of leadership is not the cloak of comfort, but the robe of responsibility. Accountability is not for the intention but for the deed. You must continue to refuse to compromise with expediency. You must maintain the courage to defy the consensus. You must continue to choose the harder right, instead of the easier wrong. Thomas S. Monson, Jan. 14, 2001Jan. 14, 2001

  • "Your leadership in the home must include leading in family worship. You give father's blessings. You take an active part in establishing family rules and discipline. As a leader in your home you plan and sacrifice to achieve the blessing of a unified and happy family. To do all of this requires that you live a family-centered life." "As President Joseph F. Smith counseled: 'Brethren, there is too little religious devotion, love, and fear of God, in the home; too much worldliness, selfishness, indifference, and lack of reverence in the family, or it never would exist so abundantly on the outside. Then, the home is what needs reforming. Try today, and tomorrow, to make a change in your home.' " L. Tom Perry, Ensign, May 2004, 71Ensign, May 2004, 71

  • 1.People follow the leader first and the leaders vision second - It doesnt matter if the leader shares a powerful vision, if the leader is not someone who people will follow the vision will never be realized. 1.Trust is the force that connects people to the leader and his/her vision - Without trust there is a huge gap between the leader and the vision. Without trust people will stay off the bus. 3.Leadership is not just about what you do but what you can inspire, encourage and empower others to do. 4.A leader brings out the best within others by sharing the best within themselves.
  • Slide 22
  • 5.Just because youre driving the bus doesnt mean you have the right to run people over - Abraham Lincoln said Most anyone can stand adversity, but to test a mans character give him power. (D&C 121) The more power you are granted the more it is your responsibility to serve, develop and empower others. 6.Rules without Relationship Leads to Rebellion As a leader you can have all the rules you want but if you dont invest in your people and develop a relationship with them they will rebel.
  • Slide 23
  • 7.Lead with optimism, enthusiasm and positive energy, guard against pessimism and weed out negativity. 8.Great Leaders know they dont have all the answers. Rather they build a team of people who either know the answers or will find them. 9.Leaders inspire and teach their people to focus on solutions, not complaints 10.Great leaders know that success is a process not a destination

  • And it came to pass that when they had all been brought, and Jesus stood in the midst, he commanded the multitude that they should a kneel down upon the ground. he himself also a knelt upon the earth; and behold he b prayed unto the Father, and the things which he prayed cannot be written, and the multitude did bear record who heard him. And after this manner do they bear record: The a eye hath never seen, neither hath the ear heard, before, so great and marvelous things as we saw and heard Jesus speak unto the Father; And no a tongue can speak, neither can there be written by any man, neither can the hearts of men conceive so great and marvelous things as we both saw and heard Jesus speak; and no one can conceive of the joy which filled our souls at the time we heard him pray for us unto the Father. 3 rd Nephi 17: 13-17

  • the people were all converted unto the Lord, upon all the face of the land, both Nephites and Lamanites, and there were no contentions and disputations among them, and every man did deal justly one with another. And they had all things common among them; therefore there were not rich and poor, bond and free, but they were all made free, and partakers of the heavenly gift And it came to pass that the thirty and seventh year passed away also, and there still continued to be peace in the land. 4 th Nephi 1:2-4

  • The BYU Experience An amazing opportunity and blessing that most from our home country will never enjoy Life changing spiritual experiences Example of this was the recent Tanner Addition dedication
  • Slide 28
  • Tanner Dedication We heard the Prophet of God pray specifically for us Bless all students that they might recognize that they walk on hallowed ground when entering this building. May each one appreciate the past, contemplate the future and work diligently in the present."
  • Slide 29
  • Tanner Dedication "May this truly be a house of learning. "May each truly enter to learn and go forth to serve, that they may be witnesses of Thee and Thy work by their very lives."
  • Slide 30
  • Tanner Dedication To be in the presence of half the Quorum of the Twelve and the entire 1 st Presidency
  • Slide 31
  • Leadership Impact How do we use the experiences to enhance our Leadership Must keep a record of our spiritual experiences Need to share these experiences with others (eg. The Nephites) Such experiences are wasted if we do not note and then act upon the promptings of the Spirit that we receive (eg. Conversion in missionary work)

  • Not everyone will have the opportunity to see a prophet face-to- face. Fortunately, that isnt necessary. We can all receive the same witness I did on those steps long ago. More important than seeing a prophet is understanding the message he has for us. Applying that message is a sure way to gain a testimony of his holy calling. • One of the greatest sins, both in magnitude and extent... is the sin of ingratitude Joseph Fielding Smith Where there is gratitude, there is humility, as opposed to pride Gordon B. Hinckley
  • Slide 36
  • Its so easy in life for us to receive blessings, many of them almost uncounted...[and to] take them for granted. I would remind all of you that if were ever going to show gratitude properly to our Heavenly Father, we should do it with all of our heart, might, mind, and strength David B. Haight
  • Slide 37
  • We can lift ourselves, and others as well, when we refuse to remain in the realm of negative thought and cultivate within our hearts an attitude of gratitude. If ingratitude be numbered among the serious sins, then gratitude takes its place among the noblest of virtues Pres. Thomas S. Monson

  • Gratitude is a duty which ought to be paid, but which none have a right to expect Jean-Jacques Rousseau
  • Slide 39
  • As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them John F. Kennedy

  • Gratitude is among the greatest virtues. I hope there is not a day that passes that you do not get on your knees and thank the Lord for the marvelous privileges you have in attending this university. Pres. Gordon B Hinckley

  • We should begin by recognizing the reality that just because something is good is not a sufficient reason for doing it. The number of good things we can do far exceeds the time available to accomplish them. Some things are better than good, and these are the things that should command priority attention in our lives. Most of us have more things expected of us than we can possibly do. As breadwinners, as parents, as Church workers and members, we face many choices on what we will do with our time and other resources. Managing Time

  • Managing Weaknesses And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them. ( Ether 12:27)
  • Slide 47
  • Managing Weaknesses What are the Principles in this scripture?
  • Slide 48
  • Managing Weaknesses According to Ether 12:27 Recognize weakness Come to the Lord (prayer, scriptures, fasting, temple, family home evening, attend Church) Be humble, be teachable, ask help Have faith The Result: You will be Strong enough for your needs!
  • Slide 49
  • Managing Weaknesses Enoch Story: And so great was the faith of Enoch that he led the people of God, and their enemies came to battle against them; and he spoke the word of the Lord, and the earth trembled, and the mountains fled, even according to his command; and the rivers of water were turned out of their course; and the roar of the lions was heard out of the wilderness; and all nations feared greatly, so powerful was the word of Enoch, and so great was the power of the language which God had given him. (Moses 7:13)
  • Slide 50
  • Managing Weaknesses What Enoch applied: Enoch recognized his weaknesses Came to the Lord, accepted the task, asked for help Was humble Had faith (he did everything he could) The Result: Enoch was able to accomplish his mission and saved his entire people, because he received Power from God, he could do everything!

  • Jesus: The Perfect Leader By President Spencer W. Kimball
  • Slide 58
  • Jesus: The Perfect Leader Jesus knew who he was and why he was here on this planet. That meant he could lead from strength rather than from uncertainty or weakness Jesus said several times, Come, follow me. His was a program of do what I do, rather than do what I say Jesus was a listening leader. Because he loved others with a perfect love, he listened without being condescending (displaying superior attitude).
  • Slide 59
  • Jesus: The Perfect Leader The Saviors leadership was selfless. He put himself and his own needs second and ministered to other beyond the call of duty, tirelessly, lovingly, effectively. So many problems in the world today spring from selfishness, and self-centeredness this is a direct reversal of principles and practices pursued so perfectly by that perfect example of leadership, Jesus of Nazareth.
  • Slide 60
  • Jesus: The Perfect Leader Jesus also taught us how important it is to use our time wisely When a moment has gone, it is really gone wise time management is really the wise management of ourselves One of the great teachings of the Man of Galilee, the Lord Jesus Christ, was that you and I carry within us immense possibilities. In urging us to be perfect as our Father in Heaven is perfect, Jesus was not teasing us. He was telling us a powerful truth about our possibilities and about our potential.
  • Slide 61
  • Jesus: The Perfect Leader Prophet Kimball finished Perhaps the most important thing I can say about Jesus Christ, more important than all else I have said, is that he lives. He really does embody all those virtues and attributes the scriptures tell us of.
