    Safety Information

For safety information you need to know before working on your C isco RPS, see the Regulato ry C omp li ance and Safety

In format iondocument that accompanied this device.

    Chassis Installation Methods

Warning Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install or replace this equipment. To see translations ofthe warnings that appear in this publication, refer to theRegulatory Compliance and Safety Informationdocumentthat accompanied this device.

You can set the chassis on a desktop or install it in a rack. See the applicable instructions follow ing.

Caution Your chassis installa tion must allow unrestricted airflow for cha ssis cooling. For installa tion on a desktop, be sureto install the rubber feet; they provide clearance for cooling airflow.

    Installation in a Rack

You can install the C isco RPS in a 19-inch, 23-inch, or 24-inch rack w ith the follow ing chassis orienta tions:

    In a 19-, 23-, or 24-inch rack:

Brackets atta ched a t the front of the chassis w ith the front panel facing forwa rd

Brackets atta ched a t the rear of the chassis with the rear panel facing forwa rd

    In a center-mount telco rack:

Brackets atta ched a t the front of the chassis w ith the front panel facing forwa rd

Brackets atta ched a t the rear of the chassis with the rear panel facing forwa rd

Installing the Chassis in a Rack

Install the chassis in the rack. Ra ck-mounting screw s are not provided w ith the router. Use tw o screws fo r each side (supplied

    w ith the rack).

    Installation on a Desktop

For desktop installation, attach the rubber feet from the accessory kit in the round recesses on the chassis bottom.

Caution If you place the Cisco RPS on a desktop, do not place anything that w eighs more than 10 lb (4.5 kg) on top of thechassis.

    4 Connect Cables

Caution The Cisco RP S is power-fa ctor-corrected to comply with certain Internat iona l Electrotechnical Co mmission (IEC)standards. Do not connect the Cisco RPS to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) that has not been tested and

designed fo r pow er-fa ctor-corrected pow er systems. Do no t connect the Cisco R PS to a ferro-resonant tra nsformer.

If you do either of these things, you could dama ge the Cisco RPS.

    Connection Options and Requirements

    RPS Interface Modules

To connect to a C isco RPS, Cisco routers and C isco MC 3810 series concentra tors must be equipped w ith an R PS interfa ce

module. Interface modules are provided with installation instructions.

The FastH ub 400 series hubs, C isco 1516M hub (HP 10BASE-T H ub-16M), Ca talyst 1900 and C ata lyst 2820 series switches, and C ata lyst 2900 series and C ata lyst 3500 series XL switches ship w ith an RP S connector a nd do not require an R PS ada pter

    module.

    Cable Connection Procedures

Before connecting to external devices, read t he pow er wa rnings below. C isco recommends that you disconnect all pow er before

    beginning.

Note You can connect an ad ditional external device to a Cisco RPS that is already pow ered up w ithout interrupting pow erto the C isco RPS or to any o ther connected external devices. Be sure to connect your cable to the Cisco RPS first and

then to the external device. How ever, in a redunda nt-with-reboo t configura tion, to ensure proper operation, yo u must

pow er up the switch or hub before pow ering up the Cisco RPS. Therefore, a lwa ys connect the switch to AC b efore you

connect it to the Cisco RPS. Failure to follow the proper pow er-up sequence can result in incorrect LED displays.

Warning Before performing any of the following procedures, ensure that power is removed fromthe DC circuit. To ensurethat all power is OFF, locate the circuit breaker on the panel board that services the DC circuit, switch the circuitbreaker to the OFF position, and tape the switch handle of the circuit breaker in the OFF position. To seetranslations of the warnings that appear in this publication, refer to theRegulatory Compliance and SafetyInformationdocument that accompanied this device.

Warning Before working on a systemthat has an on/off switch, turn OFF the power and unplug the power cord. To seetranslations of the warnings that appear in this publication, refer to theRegulatory Compliance and SafetyInformationdocument that accompanied this device.

Warning This unit might have more than one power cord. To reduce the risk of electric shock, disconnect the two powersupply cords before servicing the unit. To see translations of the warnings that appear in this publication, refer totheRegulatory Compliance and Safety Informationdocument that accompanied this device.

To connect an external hub, sw itch, router, or concentrato r to a C isco RPS, perform t he follow ing steps:

Step1 Disconnect the AC pow er cord on a hub or sw itch; turn the pow er sw itch to the OFF position on a router orconcentrator.

Step2 Connect the DC-output end of the cable to the RPS connector on the rear panel of the hub, switch, router, orconcentrato r. The DC -output end o f the RP S cable has either 8 or 18 pins in the connector. (For connector loca tions,

    5 Power Up the Equipment

Step1 If you are using the redundant-with-reboot configuration (not recommended), power up the switch by connecting theAC pow er cord of the hub or sw itch to an AC pow er outlet.

Note If you use the redundant-with-reboot configuration, it is important to power up the hub or switch beforepow ering upthe Cisco RPS to ensure correct operation. If the Cisco RPS pow ers up first, the LEDs might not indicate the actual

    state.

Step2 Plug the other end of the Cisco RPS AC pow er cable into an AC pow er outlet.

Step3 Pow er up the Cisco RPS. There is a separate pow er sw itch for each AC input pow er source. M ake sure that the pow ersw itch is on for each AC pow er source used. (See Figure 17.)
