Cisco ASR 14000 Series Aggregation Services Router 8-Slot Line Card Chassis Unpacking, Moving, and Securing Guide

This guide provides instructions for unpacking the Cisco ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis and its components, moving the chassis to its permanent location, and mounting and securing the chassis in a rack. Overview of Unpacking, Moving, and Securing the ChassisThe following table provides an overview of the tasks required to get the Cisco ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis from the shipping bay to the installation location and mounted into its rack.

Step 1 Position the rack in the location you wish to install the 8-slot chassis (see the“Preparing the Rack for Chassis Installation” section on page 4).

Step 2 Secure the rack to the floor (see the “Preparing the Rack for Chassis Installation” section on page 4).

Ensure that the rack is properly grounded in accordance with electrical grounding requirements.

Step 3 Using a fork lift, transport the 8-slot chassis from the loading dock to the staging area.

Step 4 In the staging area, remove the packaging from the chassis, leaving the chassis attached to the pallet (see the “Unpacking the Chassis and Card Pallets” section on page 6 and Figure 1 on page 7).

For safety and stability, it is important to move the chassis while still mounted on the pallet.

Step 5 Move the chassis and pallet to the room where it will be installed (see the “Moving the Cisco ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis to Its Permanent Location” section on page 10).

There should be no impediments to moving the chassis through the facility to its installation location. To ensure that the chassis has proper access to the installation location, see the Cisco ASR 14000 Series Aggregation Services Router 8-Slot Line Card Chassis Site Planning Guide.

Step 6 Install the horizontal mounting rails on the rack (see the “Installing the Horizontal Mounting Rails” section on page 12.

Step 7 Remove the rear vertical mounting brackets from the chassis (see “Removing the Rear Vertical Mounting Brackets” section on page 13).

You need to remove the rear vertical mounting brackets because you cannot pull the chassis into the rack (from the rear side of the chassis) with them attached to the chassis.

Step 8 Install the rear pull handles on the chassis (see “Installing the Rear Handle Pulls” section on page 15).

You need the rear pull handles to pull the chassis into the rack.

Shipping Carton and Pallet Specifications

Shipping Carton and Pallet SpecificationsThe Cisco ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis is shipped in a double-wall carton on a standard shipping pallet. Always transport the chassis in its original packaging and make sure that the system is transported and stored in an upright position. If you plan to store system components before the installation, be sure to store the components carefully and in their original shipping containers to prevent accidental damage.

A newly received 8-slot line card chassis in its shipping carton and on a pallet has the following physical characteristics:

• Weight (pallet, packaging, and chassis): 537 lb (243.5 kg)

– A fully loaded chassis weighs 650 lb (294.8 kg).

• Pallet length: 48.00 inches (+/- .12)

• Pallet width: 37.12 inches (+/- .12)

• Pallet height: 10.5 inches

• Shipping carton height: 50.87 inches (+/- .50)

Caution Do not stack the 8-slot line card chassis shipping cartons, as serious damage to the system can occur.

Step 9 Remove the support brackets that secure the chassis to the pallet. Then move the chassis from the pallet to a scissor lift or other suitable lifting device (see the “Removing the Chassis from the Pallet” section on page 16).

The scissor lift should have a lifting capacity exceeding 600 lb.

Caution Exercise extreme caution during this procedure. The chassis is unstable when not secured to the pallet or rack. The chassis should always remain upright and should not be bumped or dropped.

Step 10 Mount the chassis into the rack (see the “Mounting the Chassis Into a Rack” section on page 21)

Step 11 Secure the front of the chassis to the rack with the vertical mounting brackets.

There are 12 screws per side.

Step 12 Reattach the rear vertical mounting brackets to the chassis.

Step 13 Secure the rear of the chassis to the rack with the vertical mounting brackets.

Step 14 Remove the rear and front handle pulls (see the “Removing the Rear Handle Pulls” section on page 27 and the “Removing the Front Handle Pull” section on page 28).

Step 15 Proceed with the 8-slot line card chassis installation. See the Cisco ASR 14000 Series Aggregation Services Router 8-Slot Line Card Chassis Installation Guide.

Shipping and Receiving Considerations

Shipping and Receiving ConsiderationsAs you plan for your shipping and receiving needs, you should also consider the following:

• Transport of the 8-slot line card chassis from the loading dock and staging area to the freight elevator:

– Are the dock ramps wide enough to accommodate the 8-slot line card chassis shipping cartons?

– Are there any ceiling limitations or obstructions (such as low-hanging pipes) that would obstruct the 8-slot line card chassis shipping cartons as they are being transported to the freight elevator?

• Clear the area where you will unpack the components.

• Understand the sequence in which you will unpack and install the components.

Caution Cisco Systems packages the Cisco ASR 14000 router systems for shipment to ensure that the systems are transported safely and arrive undamaged. Cisco does not authorize shipping the Cisco ASR 14000 router systems in any other fashion. Due to the weight of the route processors (RPs) and modular services cards (MSCs), the system’s mechanical tolerances, and the shock and vibration that shipment entails, shipping the system with the MSCs and RPs installed in the chassis subjects the system to stressful conditions for which Cisco ASR 14000 router systems were not designed. Subjecting the Cisco ASR 14000 router systems to abnormal physical stress is a condition that voids the warranty.

Preparing the Rack for Chassis InstallationYou will install the Cisco ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis into a 30-inch standard rack with 22.8-inch pitch standard horizontal mounting rails.

Cisco Systems has tested the Cisco ASR 14000 40

8-Slot Line Card Chassis to Cisco internal Mechanical Design Verification Testing (MDVT) and electrical design verification testing in an Enclosure Systems Worldwide ESW 27 rack (part number F-01941-01). This finding is neither an endorsement nor recommendation for any particular rack product. Use this information for planning only. Consult your Cisco account representative for additional details.

Before you move the chassis or mount the chassis into the rack, we recommend that you do the following:

Step 1 Place the rack into the location you wish to install the Cisco ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis.

Step 2 Secure the rack to the floor.

Warning The chassis should be mounted on a rack that is permanently affixed to the building. Statement 1049

To bolt the rack to the floor, a floor bolt kit (also called an anchor embedment kit) is required. For information on bolting the rack to the floor, consult a company that specializes in floor mounting kits (such as Hilti; see Hilti.com for details).


Chassis Packaging Overview

Hilti provides floor mounting kits for both the Cisco ASR 14000 16-Slot Line Card Chassis and racks that mount the Cisco ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis.

Tip Make sure that floor mounting bolts are accessible, especially if annual retorquing of bolts is required.

Planning for Floor-Mounting HolesWhen planning for the floor-mounting holes, take these guidelines into account:

For ESW 27 racks:

• Outrigger L-brackets:

20.1 inches (51.0 cm) wide x 31.6 inches (80.3 cm) deep

• Internal frame holes:

17.625 inches (44.77 cm wide) x 21 inches (53.34 cm) deep

For all other racks, check with rack manufacturer.

Chassis Packaging OverviewThe line card chassis arrives packaged on several pallets (the number of pallets depends on the options you ordered) with each package containing a label that describes the contents:

• Primary system pallet (Crate 1): Contains the chassis itself encased in a polyethylene bag and covered with a corrugated master shipper packing crate held together with plastic bands. The chassis is shipped with the air filter already installed. The modular services card (MSC), physical layer interface module (PLIM), and route processor (RP) card slots are populated with impedance carriers. The switch fabric slot is shipped with a slot cover over it.

The primary system pallet also contains the fan trays, power distribution units (PDUs), fan trays, and route processors (RPs).

• Card pallet (Crate 2): Contains the switch fabric cards, the MSCs, and any PLIMs.

Unpacking the ChassisThis section describes how to unpack the 8-slot line card chassis.

Caution Use the complete Cisco Systems packaging for shipment of product or components. Failure to properly use Cisco packaging may result in damage or loss of the product.

The chassis is shipped on a pallet by itself and arrives inside a polyethylene bag enclosed in a corrugated box, held in place by plastic bands (see Figure 1).

Prerequisites

Before performing this task, be sure to have sufficient room around the chassis pallet for unpacking. For information about the chassis dimensions, see Appendix A, “ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis Specifications,” in the Cisco ASR 14000 Series Aggregation Services Router 8-Slot Line Card Chassis Installation Guide.

Required Tools and Equipment

You need the following tools to perform this task:

• Scissors

• Pallet jack

• Medium Phillips screwdriver

• Wrench

Steps

To unpack the 8-slot line card chassis, follow these steps:

Step 1 Carefully move the pallet containing the 8-slot line card chassis to the staging area where you plan on unpacking it.

Caution The 8-slot line card chassis weighs about 330 lb. (150 kg) shipped, is 38.5 inches (97.8 cm) tall, and should be handled carefully to eliminate the risk of tipping the package over. Use mechanical aids when moving or lifting the chassis.

Step 2 Using the scissors, cut the three plastic bands holding the master shipper in place. Slip the box up over the chassis.

Step 3 Remove the accessory carton, packaged fan tray, documentation envelope, and remaining dunnage, and set them carefully aside.

Step 4 Leave the chassis bag in place until you are ready to move and install the chassis.

Tip Be sure to save the packaging in case you need to return any of the components.

What to Do Next

After performing this task, you can unpack the card pallets.

Unpacking the Card PalletsThis section describes how to unpack the card pallets. All components are packaged separately. Cards are packaged attached and installed on a wooden board insert held in place by captive Phillips screws.

Prerequisites

Before performing this task, unpack the chassis (see the “Unpacking the Chassis” section on page 6). In addition, read the Cisco ASR 14000 Series Aggregation Services Router 8-Slot Line Card Chassis Site Planning Guide.



• Antistatic mat




Steps

To unpack the card pallets, follow these steps:

Step 1 If possible, move the pallets to the same location as the unpacked and secured chassis. If not possible, move the individual boxes containing the various components to the chassis location.

Step 2 Unpack all cosmetic pallet parts from the packaging, and set the parts carefully aside on the antistatic mat for installation.

Note Keep the chassis area clear and dust free during and after installation.

Step 3 Unpack all card pallet parts from the packaging, and set the parts carefully aside on the antistatic mat for installation.

Note Use the cable management bracket to slide cards from the card carrier. Do not lift cards by the cable management bracket. Rotate the cards onto their vertical axes, then lift them from the bottom, using the cable management bracket only as an aid for balance.

Note Optical components for some cards are packed in clean-room bags; do not open them until you are ready to use them.

Note If any parts need to be returned, they must be returned in their complete original packaging. Failure to do so may result in damage to or loss of the parts.

What to Do Next

After performing this task, you are ready to transport the 8-slot chassis to its installation location.


Moving the Cisco ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis to Its Permanent Location


This section describes the procedures required to move the Cisco ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis in its rack to where it will permanently reside in your facility.

Tip The installation of a Cisco CRS-1 8-Slot Line Card Chassis may require space, floor loading, power, and cooling modifications to your facility. Therefore, you should plan the site well in advance of the scheduled delivery of the system. See the Cisco ASR 14000 Series Cisco ASR 14000 Series Aggregation Services Router 8-Slot Line Card Chassis Site Planning Guide.

Considerations Before Moving the 8-Slot Line Card ChassisWe recommend that at least two people move the chassis from the shipping dock to the installation site. We also recommend that you leave the chassis attached to its pallet for moving.

As you plan how to move system components from the loading dock to the installation site, we recommend that you walk the route and answer the following questions:

• What type of moving device will be used to move the chassis from the loading dock or staging area to the installation site (for example, pallet jack, forklift, or scissor lift)?

• Are all doorways and hallways wide and tall enough for the moving device and the system components?

• Are there any corners in the route to the installation site? Are the corners wide enough to accommodate the moving device and chassis components?

– The 8-slot chassis needs an aisle of approximately 60 inches in width to be turned while on a fork lift.

• Can elevators support the weight of the system components and the moving device? Are the elevators tall and wide enough?

• Are there any ramps over which the components must be moved? Are ramp inclines within the allowable tolerances? For guidelines, see the next section, “Ramp Incline Tolerances.”

• Are there any obstacles in the way that need to be moved (for example, boxes or equipment in hallways, hanging wires, and so on)?

Caution If the route to the installation site has any ramps, you must use a moving device other than a scissor lift to move the chassis over the ramps. You can then transfer the chassis onto a scissor lift for installation. Leave the impedance carriers in place in empty card slots while you move or install the chassis in the rack. The impedance carriers provide support to keep the chassis square during movement and installation.



Ramp Incline Tolerances

The ramp incline tolerances for moving the Cisco ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis are as follows:

• 1:12 or 1 inch of rise per 12 inches of run (1:6 for existing ramps).

• Maximum rise for any run is 30 inches (760 mm).

• Maximum ramp angle is 10°.

– Exception: A ramp with a slope no greater than 1:6 for a run not to exceed 2 feet (610 mm).

Verifying the Securing Location

The floor plan for the Cisco ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis must include enough space to install the 8-slot line card chassis in the equipment rack and allow sufficient airflow for the system. The floor plan must also provide enough room to access chassis components for maintenance (for example, to remove fan trays, power modules, cables, and air filters).

Figure 2 shows a top view of the Cisco CRS-1 8-Slot Line Card Chassis footprint required for installation (with optional front cosmetics installed).

Note For chassis installation, make sure that enough room exists in front of the chassis to accommodate installation personnel and the scissor lift (or similar lifting device) used to hold the chassis in the rack while it is bolted to the rack.

Installing the Horizontal Mounting Rails

Moving the Chassis to the Installation SiteThis section describes how to move the unpacked line card chassis. The line card chassis is shipped with several vertical mounting brackets preinstalled for attaching the chassis to the rack (see Figure 7 on page 18). For stability and support, you must leave the mounting brackets installed when you move the chassis.

Note The chassis is shipped with impedance carriers installed in, or slot covers installed over, all slots. We recommend leaving these in place to maintain chassis stiffness and integrity during moving.

Before moving the chassis:

• The installation location must be ready to receive the chassis (as described in the “Preparing the Rack for Chassis Installation” section on page 4)

• The packaging should be removed, while leaving the chassis firmly secured to the pallet (as described in the “Unpacking the Chassis and Card Pallets” section on page 6).

• Any obstacles or other impediments to moving the chassis should be understood and removed as described in the “Considerations Before Moving the 8-Slot Line Card Chassis” section on page 10.

Make sure there are no impediments to moving the chassis through the facility to its installation location. To ensure that the chassis has proper access to the installation location, see the Cisco ASR 14000 Series Aggregation Services Router 8-Slot Line Card Chassis Site Planning Guide.

To move the 8-slot chassis to its installation location, follow these steps:

Step 1 Make sure that the forklift or scissor lift is in the correct configuration to move the Cisco ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis.

Step 2 Move the chassis to its installation location.

What to Do Next

After moving the chassis to the room or area where you will install it, you can begin the procedure to mount the chassis into the rack.

Installing the Horizontal Mounting RailsIf you are installing a single chassis in a rack, the chassis must go in the middle or bottom portion of the rack. If you are installing two chassis in a rack, install the upper chassis first.

To install the horizontal mounting rails (see Figure 3), follow these steps:

Step 1 If you are using a rack that came shipped with horizontal mounting rails preinstalled, remove all shelf brackets.

Step 2 Determine the height at which you want the rails located in the rack.


Removing the Rear Vertical Mounting Brackets

Note Take great care to ensure that both horizontal mounting rails are perfectly level and at the same height in the rack.

Step 3 Using the 12 Phillips screws—six screws for each rail (three screws in the front and three in the back)—attach the rails to the rack at the desired height.

Step 4 If you are mounting two chassis in a single rack, attach two additional horizontal mounting rails to the top of the rack, parallel to the attached horizontal mounting rails (to maintain a proper depth spacing of 22.8 inches for the chassis on the rack).

Note Place the upper rails at least 42 inches (107 cm) above the lower rails to provide sufficient clearance for the chassis.

What to Do Next

After installing the horizontal mounting rails on the rack, remove the rear vertical mounting brackets from the chassis.

Removing the Rear Vertical Mounting BracketsYou need to remove the rear vertical mounting brackets because you cannot pull the chassis into the rack (from the rear side of the chassis) with them attached to the chassis. You will then reattach them after the chassis has been pulled into the rack.


You need the following tools and parts to perform this task:

• Antistatic mat

• Number 1 Phillips screwdriver

• 7-mm socket wrench

Removing the Rear Vertical Mounting Brackets

To remove the rear vertical mounting bracket from the chassis, follow these steps:

Step 1 Use the 7-mm socket wrench to remove the outside 12 screws (six for each bracket) that hold the rear side chassis vertical mounting brackets (right side bracket and left side bracket) to the chassis (see Figure 4).

Step 2 Use the number 1 Phillips screwdriver to remove the inside screws.

Step 3 Remove the two vertical mounting brackets, and set them aside, along with their screws.

Caution When the vertical mounting brackets are removed, be careful not to handle the chassis by the side panels to avoid bending them.

What to Do Next

Now that you have installed the horizontal mounting rails on the rack and removed the rear vertical mounting brackets from the chassis, we recommend that you install the rear handle pulls.

Installing the Rear Handle Pulls

Installing the Rear Handle PullsThis section describes how to install the rear handle pulls. The rear handle pulls provide additional handholds to aid you in moving the chassis, mounting the chassis into a rack, and unmounting the chassis (see Figure 5).

Note The rear handle pulls must be installed on the chassis while it is still on the pallet.

Prerequisites

You must first remove the rear handle pulls from their packaging, and set the packaging aside.



• ESD-preventive wrist strap


• Rear handle pulls (two are included in the installation kit, Cisco product number ASR 14000-8-INSTALL-KT=)

Steps

To install the rear handle pulls, follow these steps:

Step 1 Attach the ESD-preventive wrist strap to your wrist and connect its leash to one of the ESD connection sockets on the rear (MSC) side of the chassis or a bare metal surface on the chassis.

Step 2 Remove the rear handle pulls from the packaging; two separate pulls exist for the rear of the chassis, one to cover each PDU.

Step 3 Remove the wooden block at the rear of the chassis that covers the PDUs (if necessary).

Removing the Chassis from the Pallet

Step 4 Using the socket wrench, remove the front two screws that fasten the top of the left PDU (as you face the rear [MSC] side of the chassis) to the PDU holding plate. Leave the rear two screws and PDU holding plate in place.

Step 5 Using the socket wrench, remove the two screws that hold the front of the left PDU to the lip at the lower rear edge of the chassis.

Step 6 Hold one rear handle pull in place over the left PDU (as you face the rear of the chassis). Starting with the top two screws, hand tighten the four screws that hold the handle pull to the chassis-PDU combination.

Step 7 Using the socket wrench, tighten the screws so that the handle pulls are firmly attached to the rear of the chassis.

Step 8 Repeat steps 3 through 7 with the other handle pull on the right PDU.

What to Do Next

After performing this task, remove the chassis from the pallet to a scissor lift or other suitable lifting device. You will use the handle pulls for additional support in moving and mounting the chassis.

Removing the Chassis from the PalletIn this procedure, you remove the support brackets that secure the chassis to the pallet and then transfer the chassis to a lifting device, such as a scissor lift. We recommend that two people perform this procedure.

Caution Exercise extreme caution during this procedure. The chassis is unstable when not secured to the pallet or rack. The chassis should always remain upright and should not be bumped or dropped.

To remove the chassis from the pallet and then transfer the chassis to a scissor lift (or other lifting device), follow these steps:

Step 1 Using the screwdriver, remove the six panhead M5 x10-mm screws (three screws at the top of the bracket and three at the bottom) that connect the left-front support bracket to the chassis (see Figure 6).

Note Do not remove the chassis support brackets until you are ready to move and install the chassis.

Step 2 Using the wrench, remove the 3/4-inch bolts that connect the left front support bracket to the pallet.

Step 3 Set the support bracket aside carefully.

Step 4 Repeat these steps for the remaining three support brackets.

Transferring the Chassis to a Mechanical Lifting Device

Caution Because of the high chassis weight (about 331 lb [138 kg] with fans, PDUs, and impedance carriers as shipped), you should not attempt to move or lift it without a mechanical lifting device. The scissor lift should have a lifting capacity exceeding 600 lb.

Step 1 Place the mechanical lifting device in front of the chassis, and place the pallet containing the chassis on the ground to the side of the lift aid.

Step 2 Prepare to use the mechanical lifting device: Place a piece of cardboard on the surface of the lift.

Step 3 With two people grasping the two rear handle pulls, slide the chassis carefully from the pallet on top of the cardboard onto the lift.

Caution When moving or mounting the chassis, be careful not to apply pressure to the cable management brackets on the front of the chassis, or they may bend or break.

What to Do Next

After performing this task, you are ready to mount the chassis into the rack.

Preparing to Mount the Chassis in a RackBefore you mount the 8-slot chassis into a rack, it is critical that the installation site has been prepared properly to handle the chassis weight, power requirements, cooling needs, and other requirements.

Because of the chassis weight (up to 650 lb. when fully loaded with the line cards, front door, and grille), you should review the rack specifications from the manufacturer to determine whether the racks you have are appropriate for it. See the “Equipment Rack Specifications” section in Chapter 3 of the Cisco ASR 14000 Series Aggregation Services Router 8-Slot Line Card Chassis Site Planning Guide.

To meet electromagnetic emission and immunity requirements specifications, the line card chassis must have all of the following mounting brackets installed:

• Two rear (MSC) side chassis vertical mounting brackets

• On the rack: four rack vertical mounting brackets (these brackets are supplied by your rack manufacturer). See the specifications pertinent to rack mounting issues in the “Equipment Rack Specifications” section in Chapter 3 of the Cisco ASR 14000 Series Aggregation Services Router 8-Slot Line Card Chassis Site Planning Guide. Consult your rack manufacturer for further information.

You will remove the rear vertical mounting brackets temporarily to install the chassis in the rack, but you must reattach them later with the original mounting hardware.

Caution To avoid tipping the chassis and possible injury when installing or servicing it, take care to properly position the chassis in the rack when you are mounting it.

To accommodate equipment racks with different mounting hole patterns, the chassis mounting brackets have groups of screw holes on either side (see Figure 8).

The mounting holes in the chassis mounting brackets are spaced so that one mounting hole in each hole group aligns with a corresponding hole in the equipment rack or the optional center-mount bracket. By using the corresponding mounting hole (in the same hole group) on the opposite side of the chassis, you can level the chassis in the rack.

To accommodate different site requirements, the chassis can be mounted in a rack with either the front (PLIM) side or rear (MSC) side facing out. We recommend that the chassis be mounted with the front side facing out (see the “Mounting the Chassis Into a Rack” section on page 21 for details).

Caution When you are installing the chassis in a rack, you must leave the impedance carriers in place to provide the chassis with enough support to keep it square during the procedure.

Caution Because of the chassis size and weight, it is unsafe to lift the chassis without mechanical assistance.

Mounting the Chassis Into a Rack

Mounting the Chassis Into a RackThis section describes how to mount the Cisco ASR 14000 Series Aggregation Series Router 8-Slot Line Card Chassis into a standard 19-inch rack with the front (PLIM) side of the chassis facing out (in other words, by sliding the rear (MSC) side of the chassis into the rack).

We recommend that you use only a four-post rack that matches the mounting specifications required for the chassis. For more detailed information about rack types and rack mounting issues, see the “Unpacking the Chassis and Card Pallets” section on page 6. For chassis specifications, see Appendix A, “ASR 14000 8-Slot Line Card Chassis Specifications,” in the Cisco ASR 14000 Series Aggregation Services Route 8-Slot Line Card Chassis Installation Guide.

For simplicity, these instructions show a single chassis being mounted mid-rack. The procedure for mounting two chassis in a rack is similar; when doing so, be sure to mount the upper chassis first.

Caution Do not remove any components from the chassis before moving or mounting it. The chassis is shipped configured for maximum stability for moving and mounting; removing any cards, impedance carriers, or slot covers can cause chassis misalignment and damage during moving and mounting.




Prerequisites

Before performing this task, unpack the chassis (see the “Unpacking the Chassis” section on page 6) and your rack and install the rear handle pulls (see the “Installing the Rear Handle Pulls” section on page 15). Make sure that the rack is level and bolted to the floor (see the “Preparing the Rack for Chassis Installation” section on page 4).



• Antistatic mat

• Pallet truck





• 5/32 Allen wrench; we recommend using a magnetic Allen bit (with bit extender) that fits a cordless drill.

• Installation kit (contains horizontal mounting brackets and screws) (Cisco product number ASR 14000-8-INSTALL-KT=)

Note If you choose not to use the mounting screws from the installation kit, you can use 10-32, 10-24, or M5 screws. (M6 and 1/4-20 screws do not fit.) We recommend screws made of stainless steel or other hard alloys; because of the weight of the chassis, the heads of soft alloy screws may strip.

Steps

To mount the chassis on the rack with the front (PLIM) side facing out, follow these steps:

Step 1 With the chassis on the lift, align the chassis with the rack.

Step 2 Using your mechanical lift, raise the chassis to the height of the rack’s horizontal mounting rails.

Figure 10 shows a scissor lift raising the chassis.

Tip Be careful to align the bottom of the chassis with the horizontal mounting rails.

Step 3 With two people behind the chassis, use the rear handle pulls to carefully move the chassis from the mechanical lift aid to the rack, and slide it onto the rack’s horizontal mounting rails.

Step 4 Move the lift aid away from the front of the chassis.

Step 5 Use the front handle pull to push carefully until the front vertical mounting brackets are flush with the vertical rack posts.

Step 6 Secure the front of the chassis to the rack with the front vertical mounting brackets.

Tip The vertical mounting brackets have a guide pin near the top of the bracket that aligns with an indentation in the chassis that allows you to easily orient the mounting brackets to the chassis.

Step 7 Use the 7-mm socket wrench to reattach the rear (MSC) side vertical mounting brackets to the rear of the chassis (see Figure 11).

Step 8 Insert and partially tighten the 48 screws and their associated washers—12 on each edge—to attach the chassis vertical mounting brackets to the rack vertical mounting brackets (see Figure 12).

Step 9 Adjust the screw locations as needed.

Removing the Rear Handle PullsThis section describes how to remove the rear handle pulls. The handle pulls provide additional handholds to aid you in moving, mounting, and unmounting the chassis (see Figure 13).

To remove a rear handle pull, follow these steps:

Step 1 Attach the ESD-preventive wrist strap to your wrist and connect its leash to one of the ESD connection sockets on the rear (MSC) side of the chassis or a bare metal surface on the chassis.

Step 2 Using the socket wrench, loosen the four screws holding the right rear handle pull (as you face the rear [MSC] side of the chassis) to the chassis. Repeat this step for the left handle pull.

Step 3 Holding the right handle pull in place, use your hand to remove the four screws from the handle pull. Carefully set the handle pull aside. Repeat this step for the left handle pull.

Step 4 Replace the eight screws (four for each PDU) that connect the PDU to the chassis.

Removing the Front Handle PullThis section describes how to remove the front handle pull. The handle pull provides additional handholds to aid you in moving, mounting, and unmounting the chassis and is installed on the chassis when it is shipped (see Figure 14).

Steps

To unmount the chassis from the rack, follow these steps:

Step 1 Power down the chassis and disconnect it from the power source.

Step 2 Remove the inlet grille.

Step 3 Install the front handle pull (see Figure 14 on page 28):

a. Attach the ESD-preventive wrist strap to your wrist and connect its leash to one of the ESD connection sockets on the front (PLIM) side of the chassis or a bare metal surface on the chassis.

b. Align the front handle pull with the bottom of the chassis in front of the power module bay.

c. Slide the front handle pull into position so that the captive screws align with the screw holes on the chassis; six screws (three on each side) attach the handle pull to the exterior chassis casing, and four screws (two on each side) attach the handle pull to the interior of power module bay.

The lip on the bottom of the front handle pull rests on the base of the power module bay.

d. While holding the handle pull in place, partially tighten the captive screws that hold the front handle pull to the chassis to make sure they are engaged.

e. Using the screwdriver, fully tighten the captive screws.

Step 4 Install the rear handle pulls (see the “Installing the Rear Handle Pulls” section on page 15).

Step 5 Remove the cards from the chassis and install impedance carriers into the chassis slots before unmounting and moving it.

Caution Removing more than one switch fabric card at a time can misalign the chassis and may damage the card or chassis when reinserting the cards. Remove and reinsert only one card at a time.

Note To ensure correct fit, we recommend reinstalling the impedance carriers in the following order, based on slot numbers, with slot 0 being the far right slot and slot 7 being the far left slot as you face the rear side of the chassis: slots 6, 4, 3, 1, 7, 5, 2, and 0. For more information, see the “Chassis Slot Numbers” section in Chapter 1 of the Cisco ASR 14000 Series Aggregation Services Router 8-Slot Card Chassis Installation Guide.

Step 6 Use the Allen screwdriver to unscrew and remove the 24 screws and their associated washers—12 on each edge—that attach the chassis front (PLIM) side vertical mounting brackets to the rack vertical mounting brackets, and set them carefully aside.

Figure 16 shows the location of the chassis mounting holes.

Step 7 Use the 7-mm socket wrench to loosen and remove the 12 screws (six for each rail) that attach the rear (MSC) side vertical mounting brackets to the rear of the chassis, and set them carefully aside.

Step 8 Move the lift aid into position at the front of the rack, and raise it so that it is level with the bottom of the chassis.

Step 9 Carefully pull the chassis by the front handle pull until it rests partly over the lift aid (see Figure 17).

Step 10 Use the rear handle pulls to carefully push the rear of the chassis until the chassis rests fully on the lift aid.

Step 11 Lower the chassis to the desired height using the lift aid.

Caution Do not move the chassis up or down a ramp when it is on a scissor lift.

Step 12 Use the 7-mm socket wrench to reattach the rear (MSC) side vertical mounting brackets to the rear of the chassis (see Figure 11 on page 25).

What to Do Next

After performing this task, you may pack and move the chassis. If you are planning on moving the chassis, we recommend that you place the chassis, PLIMs, and MSCs in their original packaging and reattach the chassis to its original shipping pallet.
