CISE 2012-2013 Annual Report

Dear Friends of CISE,

One of the most rewarding parts of my job as Superintendent is learning the stories behind each of our Catholic schools. When walking the hallways of our CISE schools, I am often approached by students or parents who tell me touching accounts of school life. I’ve been moved by stories of exceptional teachers, who show heroic dedication in reaching out to the students under their care. I’ve heard stories of principals who fearlessly lead their schools, building communities of compassion and acceptance. I’ve listened to accounts of volunteers who generously donate their time and make lasting impacts upon the lives of children.

This report contains a small sampling of the many, many touching stories present within our CISE schools. These stories are formed every day through the exceptional work of our school teachers, staff, volunteers, and supporters. CISE itself is an incredible story of success; for over three decades, countless donors have generously shared their time, talent, and treasure with our CISE schools. They have directly impacted the lives of thousands of students, who have been blessed with a superior Catholic education founded upon principles of love and respect.

Your Investments at Work!

- In 2013, more than 1,700 children enrolled in the CISE schools. This is an increase of 100 students.

- We now have seven preschool classrooms with 120 preschoolers getting a jump on their education in a CISE school. This is an increase of 20 children over last year.

- This year, St. Joseph added a second Kindergarten.

- Based on the Iowa Assessments, our third graders are reading at grade level.

- More than 300 of our graduates are attending local Catholic high schools. And they are doing well! Seventy percent of our students are achieving an average of 80% or better and half are on the “A” or “B” honor roll.

- Ninety percent of CISE students who graduate from a Catholic High School go on to college. An additional six percent continue their education at a technical school or through military service.

For families with children in our inner-city, your contribution has helped to provide a runway out of poverty. You can read some of their stories on the following pages.

Meet Robert

To the CISE Fund Team,

I wanted to take the time today to thank the CISE Fund for the work they have done for me.

I graduated from Holy Family in 2003 and from Elder High School in 2007. I know that I would not be where I am today without the generous help of the CISE Fund.

Currently, I am getting my Masters in Social Work and I am helping poor inner-city youth. I just got back from teaching English in Spain for a school year. I have always wondered why I wanted to help the youth. I believe the worldview and values the Catholic curriculum gave me has turned me into a better person and called me to carry out this mission.

I don’t know how to put into words how thankful I am for the donors of the CISE fund. The mission of the CISE fund has come to fruition. The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has made an impact on this city more than people will ever realize. Without the CISE program, I would not have made it out of poverty. I want to thank all of the staff and donors who are a part of this program.

Do you know why your parents sent you to Holy Family? My parents are from Campbell County Kentucky and they moved to Price Hill in hopes of finding a job and a better life for our family. My parents were not Catholic and had no experience with Catholic Schools, but my mom was determined to provide the best education possible for my brother and me. She heard about Holy Family, a

small school with a good reputation. She could not have afforded to send us to a private school without the support provided by CISE.

What was your experience at Holy Family?I was a good, hardworking student, but always very quiet and kept to myself. I could easily have slipped through the cracks but the teachers at Holy Family really cared about my success – they paid attention.

In addition to providing a great education, Holy Family was a sort of haven for me. My home life was not the best and my parents fought a lot. When I was in 6th grade, my father was in prison for a year. Thanks to CISE, my mom was able to continue to send me to Holy Family. The teachers knew what was happening at home and looked out for me and made sure I was okay. In most schools there might be one or two social workers, but at Holy Family, it was as if everyone was a social worker.

What are some of the things that stand out about your years at Holy Family?1) In 5th grade, we had an Urban Summer Day Camp that was sponsored by CISE. Every day we would visit a Cincinnati landmark.

We went places like the Stadium, Water Works and City Hall and I remember meeting Mr. Tarbell and Mr. Blackwell. It was a great experience. I would be interested in organizing something similar with students in the CISE schools now.2) I was privileged to have Sr. Marcel TWICE. In 6th grade and 8th grade. She was an amazing teacher. 3) The teachers cried at graduation – that made me realize how much they really cared!

What have you been doing since graduating from Holy Family?With the help of the CISE High School Grant program, I attended Elder, where I was in the band. After graduation, I attended UC and earned a degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Spanish.

While attending UC, I participated in a Habitat for Humanity project in Guatemala and completed a service-learning project at Su Casa. Both of these experiences helped me realize that what I really wanted to do was Social Work involving children.

After graduation, I spent a year in Spain teaching English and Natural Science to children. I am currently working on my Masters in Social Work at UC and will graduate in 2015.

What prompted you to send us the email?While interning at a local school for at-risk youth, I discovered how important it is to share success stories. Considering what an impact CISE had on my life, I felt it would be selfish not to share my story.

Is there anything else you would like to tell our donors?Yes. When I was a kid, I didn’t know I was poor and living in a poor neighborhood. Looking back, I’m kind of glad I grew up poor because now I can better relate to the kids I am working with. I’ve been there!

I’d once again like to thank everyone who donates to CISE. Your gifts really do make a difference to kids in the CISE schools. I’m living proof!

Meet Amber Dear CISE Advisory Board and Staff,

I wanted to let you know how appreciative I am for all the help you have given me throughout my education. I attended a CISE grade school and now enjoy working for St. Boniface. The scholarship I received for tuition at Purcell Marian was amazing. I was able to get the Catholic education I wanted in a great school! I graduated with honors in 2011. I am currently a student at University of Cincinnati, made the Dean’s List and am now officially pre-med.

Again, thank you for all your support through my education. Please let me know if there is ever anything I can do. I would be more than happy to give back and do what I can.

Why did your parents decide to send you to Prince of Peace? Religion has always been an important part of our family life. My mom is Catholic and my Grandfather on my Dad’s side is a Baptist minister. I was baptized and raised Catholic and we were parishioners of St. Margaret of Cortona – so attending Prince of Peace was the natural progression. When I first started at Prince of Peace, it was not a CISE school. My mom, a single parent at that

time, was struggling to pay the tuition. It was great when we were able to get some help from CISE.

What are some of the things you remember about elementary school?There are a few things that stick out in my mind.1) Prince of Peace was a small school and there was such a sense of community. Even when the EdChoice program brought more students to our school and much more diversity, the sense of community remained. We just made more new friends. 2) Lots of positive reinforcement. We were consistently rewarded for good behavior. We had “Caught Being Good” stickers and when we earned twelve of them we were allowed an out-of-uniform day. 3) My kindergarten teacher, Miss Meyers, was wonderful… everybody loved her.

In your letter, you said that you are “officially pre-med.” When did you decide you wanted to become a doctor?When I was in 6th grade, I decided I wanted to become a Neonatologist. I had two cousins who were born prematurely and they had this amazing doctor who also happened to be my gymnastics coach. She was an inspiration to me and I am still in contact with her today.

What have you been doing since graduating from Prince of Peace?I received a CISE high school tuition grant to attend Purcell Marian High School. While there, I took AP classes that would help me reach my goal to become a doctor. I graduated with honors in 2011.

After a year at UK, I transferred to UC because it was more affordable and will also have a better chance of getting accepted into UC Medical School if I am in their pre-med program. As I mentioned in my letter, I made the Deans List. I am very proud of that!

You mentioned that you work at St. Boniface, which is also a CISE school. What do you do there?I do a variety of things for the church and school:• I help prepare and serve lunches in the school cafeteria.• I help my Mom and Grandmother in the church office.• Last summer, I cleaned and cooked for the priests in the church rectory.

Do you participate in any volunteer activities?Yes!• My mom runs the Big Sisters program at St. Boniface and I help her. I am in charge on days when she is not available. There are 23 girls in grades 3, 4 and 5 who have big sisters from Ursuline Academy. • I help out at our St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.• I volunteer for CAIN. (Churches Active in Northside)

Is there anything else you would like to say to our donors?Working at St. Boniface, I see what difficulties so many of the students are faced with. Many of them are struggling at home, but when they come to school – everybody is equal. Here they are with their school family and everybody is happy and they learn to get along.

My name is Latasha Burkes. I have seven children who attend St. Francis Seraph School. Two of my children are on EdChoice and I pay tuition for the other five. Switching from the public school to St. Francis Seraph has been an amazing experience.

I tell everyone that the teachers and staff are like my children’s second family. My daughter, Qua’lisea (7th grade), was struggling academically to the point where I wanted to move her to the 6th grade. The teachers and administrators were more than happy to work with her to keep her in the 7th grade. They knew she could do it and pushed her to work at her ability and it paid off on her next progress report. She now has the confidence that she lacked to do well. They were as proud of her as I was.

My son, Quy’lier (6th grade), has also had many great experiences at St. Francis Seraph. He enjoys school and loves to learn. St. Francis Seraph’s administration nominated him for the St. X Companion Scholars Program. He got in and is very excited about the possibility of going to St. Xavier for high school. This opportunity would not exist for him if he did not attend St. Francis Seraph. The teachers and staff have a lot of faith in him and want him to excel and, in return, it gives him the confidence he needs to excel.

I’m very happy that my children have the opportunities provided by St. Francis Seraph that otherwise they would not have. As my younger children get older, I have faith that they will also have these wonderful opportunities given to them by St. Francis Seraph School.

The CISE Annual Campaign

2012 Annual Campaign Results

Thanks to the dedicated fundraising efforts of Campaign Chair Mr. Wick Ach (pictured above talking to St. Boniface students) and our many generous donors, the 2012 Campaign, which wrapped up in the spring of 2013, was a great success.

With the help of the CISE Board, the Young Exec Group, CISE Campaign volunteers and a generous matching grant from an anonymous donor, Mr. Ach exceeded his fundraising goal of $2,500,000 by over $75,000, raising $2,575,770 in unrestricted funds to benefit students in the CISE schools.

Message from 2012 Campaign Chair, Wick Ach

In this effort, I was reminded often of the story of the boy with the starfish. “One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?” The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.” “Son,” the man said, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference. After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said, “I made a difference for that one.”

We may not be able to change the whole world with this year’s campaign; but we did change it for the over 1,700 kids in the CISE schools.

2013 Campaign Kick-off HighlightsFaith in Education Bishop Joseph Binzer presented two Faith in Education Awards. These awards are presented to those who have provided outstanding support for the advancement of CISE’s mission. This year’s honorees were Mr. Jack Twyman, awarded posthumously, and Mr. Ken Schuerman. The Twyman family accepted the award on behalf of Jack Twyman.

Distinguished Educator AwardHarry Santen presented this year’s award to Holy Family pre-school teacher, Jennifer Drennan. The award goes to the CISE teacher who serves as an outstanding example of teaching excellence.

Student PerformanceThe St. Joseph student choir, led by school principal Dionne Partee, opened the evening’s program.
