Kashyap’s attempt would be at making a typical Bollywood masala. Indulging the fan in himself, Anurag actually suc-ceeds in getting the most ‘filmy story’ in Bombay Talkies.

As SimantiniDey sums it up, “While Johar finally comes out of the cinema closet and ad-mits to being a smarter, more sensitive and less masaledaar filmmaker, Kashyap seems to be running out of ideas.” VERDICT

Four directors, four differ-ent stories told in four ways. While the film celebrates the madness about cinema, it also exposes the audience to hitherto unexplored crea-tive contours of Karan Johar.

Amitabh BachchanDIRECTOR: Anurag Kashy-ap, Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee HT | NEW DELHI : An ode to 100 years of Indian cinema - that is not the only factor that makes Bombay Talkies a dif-ferent film. Here is one film that was not being promoted for it’s star cast (let us not forget that the producers made sure almost all stars, living and dead, make an appearance in the film) or it’s amazing story. Bombay Talkies could be the first film that was being sold merely in the name of its directors.

Interestingly, four of the most iconic film directors came to-gether to make the movie that celebrates the spirit of Indian cinema. Anurag Kashyap, Karan Johar, Dibakar Baner-jee and Zoya Akhtar together succeed in capturing the es-sence of passion and mad-ness about Indian cinema.

Just days before the theatri-cal release of Bombay Talkies, talking to Anupama Chopra on Front Row (Star World), Anurag Kashyap had said that audiences will see a new and different Karan Johar with this movie. Anurag also said that the filmmaker inside Karan is stuffed somewhere inside the garb of a producer but with Bombay Talkies, the filmmaker takes the liberty of coming out.

HT Review: Bombay Talkies is Karan Johar’s victorysence of passion and mad-ness about Indian cinema.

The filmmaker has certainly scored with Bombay Talkies. Going by the reviews, Karan Johar’s story explores the dif-ficulties of living a lie, coming to terms with one’s own sexual-ity and the emotions involved. Rani Mukerjee receives rave reviews for her acting and so does Saquib Saleem. It is a story where an Entertainment Editor (Rani Mukerjee), her husband and News TV anchor (Randeep Hooda) and an intern (Saquib Saleem) are entangled in their own web of lies and emotions.

Karan Johar succeeds in sur-prising the audience with his short film in Bombay Talkies. Tushar Joshi, film critic with DNA writes, “Johar handles the sensitive subject with ma-turity and shows a side to him we hope he digs deep into.” It is a day of praises for Karan Johar it seems. SimantiniDey writes for Firstpost, “Shrug-ging off all the candy floss and melodrama that are the trade-marks of his films, Johar seems to have picked a subject that’s close to his heart and not nec-essarily guaranteed to win over audiences. And he proves he is a consummate storyteller.”

Dibakar Banerjee is efficient in his use of the acting prow-ess of Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Loosely based on Satyajit Ray’s PotolBabu, Dibkar makes full use of Nawazuddin’s act-ing chops. In his short story for Bombay Talkies, Dibakar explores the character of an aspiring actor who accidently gets to work in a film. Saibal-Chatterjee (NDTV) writes, “Dibakar Banerjee gives full rein to what he is good at - cap-turing the joys and despairs of “that little man” in the crowd.”

Tushar Joshi for DNA writes, “On paper Dibakar’s story must have been a fantastic read, but

its transition to the big screen is a bit sketchy. While you can’t really go wrong with cast-ing Sid-diqui, there are parts where the actor him-self seems a bit confused about what’s h a p p e n -ing around him.” Nawa-z u d d i n , nonetheless, manages to e n l i g h t e n the screen with his acting skills.

A standard Dibakar Ba-nerjee movie is what you get - no more, yet no less.

In tandem with expectations, Zoya Akhtar’s story wonder-fully explores the emotions of a kid who idolises style diva Kat-rina Kaif and wants to be like her. Zoya’s story holds a lot of potential but critics feel she fails to explore them. Tushar Joshi writes for DNA, “Zoya doesn’t really delve into the boy’s psy-che. She merely presents a situ-ation that focuses more on his craze for Katrina rather than the outcome of that emotion.”

But, unlike Karan and Diba-kar’s stories, Zoya narrates a story about the madness asso-ciated with Indian cinema - in line with the theme of Bombay Talkies. She also brings out the talent of Naman Jain quite ef-ficiently. Naman has impressed the critics with his acting.

Film critic MayankShekhar says, “Karan Johar’s short film incidentally isn’t centred on a larger-than-life male character who can sweep mushy wom-

en off their feet... Suffice it to say both Johar and Akhtar’s films deal with the same theme and while one is rather rebel-lious and angry (and that is Johar’s film by the way!), the other movie is bitter-sweet and dreamy...If anything, Karan’s film is the most experimental of the lot, at any rate it is the most unlikely one from the director. Zoya’s is the most in-timate, Dibakar’s is the most evocative, and Anurag’s is quite easily the most ‘filmy’.”

Moving on to the last leg of Bombay Talkies, Anurag Kashyap’sMurabba is a typical Anurag Kashyap story with the Amitabh Bachchan fan (Vineet kuamr Singh) trying to meet the Big B on the behest of his father (Sudhir Pandey). Anurag man-ages to capture the madness, the respect a fan holds for his icon.

Talking about his story in Bombay Talkies, Anurag Kashyap had said that it was actually his story as he, too, is a huge fan of Amitabh Bachchan. Anurag had also confessed that while Karan Johar’s stint would be the most experimental,

F-Type: Jaguar’s new alpha-bet

clearly adds a third angle to it.It is the epitome of a mod-

ern contemporary sports car that will stay refined and sombre in the city and wait for you to find a clear stretch of the road to go berserk.

It has the muscle, power, agility and at the same time refinement, to give you the best of both worlds that the Germans and Italians offer.

Whether it goes on to be-come a legend like the 911 or not, only time will tell, but from what we have at hand, it does look the part.

HT | NEW DELHI : The Brit-ish luxury car maker Jaguar has felt the need to return to its return for some years now an open top two-seater sportster, a driver’s car, as it were.

So when it announced a couple of years ago that it is working on the F-Type, taking off from the fabled E-type of yester-years, the world sat up and took notice.

The engineering team at Jag-uar have clearly flourished under the freedom that Tata Motors, the new owners of the marquee brand, had given. And they have had their fun.

Now, the F-type is ready. And Hindustan Times was given an opportunity to test out its rac-ing feet in the plains of Spain.

Let us see what the F-type is all about.EXTERIORFrom quite a distance, the car

is an attention magnet, grabbing your eyeballs and keeping them on a leash as it approaches you.

When it is close up, you would like to spend time taking in the athletic lines and the sen-suous curves rather than simply leap into the seat and take off.

The discreet use of tech-nology such as deploy-able spoiler and door handles

keep the lines clean — there are no visual disturbances.

The F-TYPE capitalises on Jaguar’s expertise in the use of aluminium, keeping the weight to a minimum while adding agility and response as the rider pushes the controls.

The raspy popping of the exhaust is distinctive, and at-tracts onlookers as much as the visual impact. Not a car for the shy and retiring types, this!INTERIORSPlush is the word that

springs to mind. The bucket seats, the controls, the navi-gation system, all are top-of the line, as you would ex-pect, and you could sink in easily and lose yourself in it.

The hood takes a princely 12 seconds to load – or slide qui-etly back into its nook. When it is on, it is as though the cabin is a sedan, not a sportster, it is that quiet. Nothing very ex-travagant but par for the course. PERFORMANCEThis is the heart

of the story, right? The F-type comes with three

engine types — the F-TYPE, F-TYPE S and the F-TYPE V8 S.

They are powered respective-ly by Jaguar’s new 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine in

340PS and 380PS outputs and a 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol producing a monstrous 495PS.

In terms of eating up the miles, how does that translate? The range-topping F-TYPE V8S hits 100 kph in 4.3 seconds. Top speed is 300 kph. The F-TYPE S comes in at 4.9 seconds and 275 kph, and the ‘basic’ F-TYPE at 5.3 seconds and 25.

A new driver, I started slow while driving the F-Type V6 on the roads and the V6S on the track. The cars beg to be pushed to the limits, and even at speeds in excess of 150 kph, it keeps asking for more.

But at no time does one feel the need to panic, as the stressed aluminum rigid frame and the well-tuned All-alumin-ium double wishbone front and rear suspension systems keep everything under control.

The exhaust note comes from an active exhaust system, standard on the S and V8 S models, in which valves open under load from 3000rpm, al-lowing the exhaust note to build to a crescendo at the redline.VERDICTFor long the sportscar fraterni-

ty was split into two halves--the Italians and Porsche. The F type
