2020 Art Spaces Program In late February, we celebrated the vast range of skills and talent showcased by local visual artists at Bunjil Place, when we launched the 2020 Art Spaces exhibition program. The event was attended by artists and presented previews of the exhibitions to be held across four Casey Cardinia library Art Spaces.

Each year the visual art program supports up to sixty local artists and provide them with the opportunity to showcase and sell their work through the exposure to half a million library visitors.

Exhibitions are presented in a range of mediums, so each exhibition is different – giving art lovers a variety of shows to see.

This year we also have a call out for artists to get involved with our first ever Local History Flip exhibition. In August we will ask artists to enter by responding to historical images of Casey with a contemporary interpretation of place. The Local History Flip exhibition will be held at Cranbourne Library in October 2020.

If you’re heading to either Bunjil Place, Cranbourne, Doveton or Endeavour Hills libraries, check out the Art Space exhibition and grab a brochure with information about the whole program and more exhibitions that are on near you!

For more information or a copy of the current digital 2020 Art Spaces exhibition brochure go to www.casey.vic.gov.au/art-spaces-casey

The Cranbourne Lions Concert Band are excited to welcome Christopher McLeod as their new Musical Director. Christopher brings a wealth of experience conducting school, musical theatre, and community ensembles.

The Cranbourne Lions Concert Band is comprised of a diverse group of members, including the young and the young at heart. It offers an opportunity for people to learn music in a fun and supportive environment and to participate in their community in a meaningful way.

The band caters for all levels of experience including lifelong musicians, adult beginners, and even primary school aged students at the beginning of their musical

journeys. Landon and Jamie Rolfe are two such members.

“I think other kids should come to band because it’s a really good experience joining a real life band” Landon who is 9 tells us, Saxophone in hand. Both he and his brother have been playing with the band for five months.

“I like coming to Cranbourne Lions Concert Band because we get to have a lot of friendship and we get to know different people from different ages” Jamie who is 11

states. He finds the mentoring of the adults around him in the Trumpet section helpful. “It’s good learning from adults around me because they do basically what I do. They’ve gone through what I’ve gone through in the past and they can help me.”

Their mother Leanne is also in the band. She originally began her music journey when she was younger, studying at a tertiary level before taking an extended break from music. She came across the band at a community event, prompting a rediscovery of her passion for music. “They were so encouraging and such a nice group of people that I decided to pick it up again. I think I’m nearly playing it better than what I used to when I was a kid.”

Max Hunter has been in the band for 20 years and is a life member. “The main experience with younger players and all players in the band is the mixed age group.

It’s a fantastic experience for both young and old. We get a lot of fun out of it.”

The band is very active in the community and puts on several concerts throughout the year. One of the members that helps plan the events is President and Life-Member Chantelle Riordan. She began her musical journey with the Cranbourne Lions Concert Band just over 11 years ago.

The decision changed her life, giving her a passion for music that has extended across several instruments and community ensembles. Chantelle understands how daunting music can seem to beginners and uses her journey as an opportunity to nurture others in a similar position. “I am so grateful to the Cranbourne Lions Concert Band for providing me with an opportunity to learn music later in life. The group has become like a second family.”

It is these aspects that drew newly appointed Musical Director Christopher McLeod to the group. “We’ve got a place for everyone here. The group has a strong community focus. They have that nurturing of players so that everyone feels like they’re part of something larger.”

The Cranbourne Lions Concert Band rehearses at The Factory Rehearsal Centre for the Arts in Cranbourne on Tuesday nights from 8pm. They welcome new members of any experience.

For more information please contact Chantelle Riordan on 0425 730 990 or check out the band website at www.cranbournelionsconcert band.org.au
