Why did Quaker choose Eldon?
• Quaker wanted to be within 60 miles of Freeburg, MO - their home office
• Quaker wanted a minimum of 60 acres to develop
• Quaker wanted a community that their starting pay of $35,000 would be a competitive wage
What did Eldon do to prepare for this growth?
• The Eldon Development Corporation is the economic development arm of our Chamber of Commerce. Members include:bankers, business owners, utility companies, city & school personnel
• The Eldon Development Corporation had been mailing Quaker information about a vacant factory building since 2010
• The EDC had a 10-acre, shovel-ready site in the industrial park
• The EDC had submitted proposals to DED’s Missouri Partnership
Why submit proposals to Missouri Partnerships?
• It helps you stay current on available properties in your community
• It helps you identify available property for development
• You receive feedback on your proposals
Develop your partnerships with key people
• Local City & County Officials
• Council of Local Governments – Helped us write a MODOT grant for the turn lane into Quaker.
• Utility Companies need to know you on a first name basis
• State Representatives and Senators
• Missouri Economic Development Team
How did our process work?
• Quaker contacted the Chamber of Commerce wanting information about the vacant factory building
• Three people from the Eldon Development Corporation & Michelle Hataway met with Quaker at their facility in Freeburg
• We then met in Eldon the following week to tour the vacant factory
• The factory was not what they were looking for…
How did our process work?
• We toured a 90 acre farm that we knew was for sale because we had filled out a Missouri Partnership proposal and had already worked with the owner of the property. We knew the water, sewer and electric of the location.
• Quaker asked if we could move a power line, close a gravel road, and get a turn lane off of the highway into the facility
• If we could do those things then that location was a possibility
How did our process work?
• We were able to achieve all of those things by working with MODOT, County Officials, and Ameren
• We then worked with the City of Eldon on the Chapter 100 to offer Tax Abatement based on their proposal to bring in 300 jobs with a starting pay of over $30,000
