GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SATELLITES

Management & Supervision: The Seniors’ Satellites were created by the City of London, and City staff and volunteers manage and operate the satellites operation and their programs. Various community partners may offer supplementary programming, or donate space.

Membership: Membership to EACH satellite is $10 + HST ($11.30) per person, per year! *2018 rate Additional minimal fees per class may be charged for classes with a certified instructor (see program schedules at each satellite for more information). Membership to any satellite is open to anyone aged 55 & over, living in any area of the City. Memberships can be purchased online at www.london.ca, at one of the City’s Customer Service Centres (for City services available evenings and Saturdays visit london.ca/hours), or on site at your satellite during the satellite operating day/time (see dates/time on front page of this brochure). If you’re purchasing your membership at the satellite location, we only accept cash or cheque (all cheques are to be made payable to ‘The City of London’). No pre-registration required for classes (unless otherwise noted); all classes are drop-in.

Membership includes:

Access to all programs and services at YOUR satellite location (unless otherwise noted);

Discounted rate on Spectrum programs operating at Kiwanis and Hamilton Road Seniors’ Centres and;

The ‘member rate’ for bus trips at both Kiwanis and Hamilton Road Seniors’ Centres.

Membership does not include:

Access to member programs and services at Kiwanis or Hamilton Road Seniors’ Centres, including special events, without paying a visitor fee.

Program fees at any partner program location

Access to community partner programs

Member Input: We welcome the input from all satellite members in regard to programming and special events. Members of the satellites are encouraged to complete surveys and talk to the Greeter at their satellite to voice their opinion.

Programs and Activities: The programs we offer at the satellite locations mimic the ‘core’ programs available at Kiwanis and Hamilton Road Seniors’ Centre & Community Centres. At the suggestion and input of the members, programs are changed or enhanced. Programs build on the concept of the Dimensions of Wellness, offering programs that support the physical, emotional, social, environmental, occupational, spiritual and intellectual wellness of our members. Our satellite programs are all ‘drop-in’ in nature, and therefore it is unnecessary to stay for the duration of the programming time at your satellite location, or pre-register (unless otherwise noted). The fitness and yoga instructors are certified, and ensure that proper conditioning, stretching, form, posture, warm up and cool downs are followed, in order to guard against any unnecessary strain on the body, or injury. The asterisks (*) next to class names indicate that the instructor has successfully completed ‘dementia friendliness’ training with the Alzheimer Society London Middlesex, and the plus sign (+) indicates the instructor has completed ‘sensitivity training for those with physical disabilities’ with the March of Dimes Canada. Programs may be changed quarterly at the satellites, depending on participation levels and input of members. See info at back of brochure regarding changes in program fees beginning Sept 1, 2018.

Additional Information: If you require additional information about our satellites, please visit our website at www.london.ca/seniors, or contact Tracy Drenth, Supervisor, City of London, by phone at 519-661-CITY, ext 5769, or by email at [email protected].

Seniors’ Satellite members speak:

I see the Satellites as something in the community that is connecting seniors and also filling a need. I love the music that the instructor chooses, and I love her personality. She is very engaging and funny, and teaches it in a way that we can easily pick up the moves. I miss it if I don’t go! I understand now how important physical activity is to my health and I do have a really good network of support, which many seniors do not.

NOTE FOR SENIORS’ SATELLITE MEMBERS RE: INCLEMENT WINTER WEATHER

Due to unpredictable weather, we have set up a system for us to inform members if there are closures or program disruptions at any of our Seniors’ Satellite locations.

If we are experiencing inclement weather, we will leave a message on the voicemail box at the Kiwanis Seniors’ Community Centre, as early as 8:30 am, Mon-Fri. By calling 519-661-5740, we will inform you if:

A Satellite is closed

Specific classes have been cancelled

Please note, however, that if an instructor is ill or has an emergency situation, we do not always have adequate time to find a replacement instructor, and therefore you may not have prior notice that the class has been cancelled (since our classes are all drop in). Cancellations or class disruptions (should we have advanced notice), will also be posted on the respective Satellite web pages at www.london.ca/seniors.

SPECIAL NOTES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

We’re Ensuring a Supportive Environment for Everyone: The Seniors’ Satellite staff are newly certified in ‘dementia friendliness’ through the Alzheimer Society London Middlesex. This certification course provides staff with additional knowledge and compassion to support those with Alzheimer’s and/or dementia. Each of our Greeters/front desk staff at each satellite location, and those instructors with a star (*) next to their program name, have successfully completed the training, and the plus sign (+) indicates the instructor has completed ‘sensitivity training for those with physical disabilities’ with the March of Dimes Canada. Note that the majority of our Greeters at each location also hold their certifications. Our programs remain welcoming, friendly, and accessible for all. Any caregiver/support person may attend the satellites free of charge (with the expectation that the caregiver will provide support to the member at all times).

FEE INCREASE FOR SENIORS’ SATELLITE PROGRAMS In addition to the programming at our seven Seniors’ Satellites, the City of London offers Spectrum programs in all London neighbourhoods and at our two Seniors’ Centres. Many of these Spectrum programs are now also offered at our Satellites, but currently the member fee for Spectrum programs are much higher per class than they are at the Satellites. For example, a Spectrum fitness program is currently $4 per class, however the same class has remained at $2 per class at the Satellites. To ensure consistency, the class fees at the Seniors’ Satellites will be increasing gradually over the next few years to start making them more consistent with our Spectrum fees.

As of September 1, 2018, per class fees will increase to $2.50/class at all Satellite locations, unless otherwise noted (ie: some classes will remain free, as we have volunteers and/or community partner agencies leading programs, or there may be an additional fee for workshops or special events). Fees will increase in $0.50 increments each Fall until they are in line with our Spectrum fees. You may still purchase Fitness Passes at the Greeters Desks, however, after September 1st, the cost of a Fitness Pass will increase to $25 (10 classes for $2.50 each; as always, the pass will never expire). If you have an unused fitness pass, you may use the current pass for $2/class and pay the additional $0.50/class in cash until the pass is used up.

MEMBERS: Keep an eye out for information this Fall at our Greeter Desks regarding subsidy that may

be available when purchasing Fitness Passes! With the increase in program fees, this may be great assistance to those that qualify for our subsidy program!

The City of London’s Play Your Way (PYW) Fund offers financial support to low income Londoners and their families who want to access recreation programs and activities offered by the City of London. Once approved, funding can be accessed for the next 12 months, up to a maximum of $300 per person (and can also be used when purchasing any Satellite or Seniors’ Centre membership). For more information or details on how to apply, please visit london.ca/playyourway or contact our customer service team at 519-661-5575.
