the trash and not flushing them. Flushing

these type of items can cause problems in the

City's sewer system. These materials do not

break down in the sewer and have been widely

shown to entangle and immobilize crucial

pieces of equipment like pumps, as well as

lead to large blockages in the treatment

process. Even wipes that are labeled

"flushable" (such as sanitary wipes, baby

wipes and household cleaning wipes) WILL

clog the sewer system - causing overflows

and contributing to costly cleanups. South

San Francisco Public Works urges everyone

to flush only human waste and toilet paper

down the toilet - and throw wipes and similar

items into the trash proper disposal.

Did you know that the City of SouthSan Francisco provides a free publictransportation with the South CityShuttle? The shuttle quietly startedservice in November 2014. Now,after 18 months of operations theshuttle has provided free publictransportation to nearly 50,000passengers. The shuttle offers 15trips a day and starts and ends at theSouth San Francisco BARTstation. While it costs about $8 foreach passenger to ride the shuttle,anyone can ride the South CityShuttle for free thanks to a grantfrom the San Mateo CountyTransportation Authority Measure A

Shuttle Program. The South City Shuttle provides free transportation for all, regardless of income, age, or

mobility. There are seniors who ride the shuttle for increased mobility to doctor appointments and shopping.

Students use the shuttle as a way to get around town after school. Then there are commuters who use the

shuttle for first and last mile transportation from the South San Francisco BART station. The South City

Shuttle has become a great community benefit where riders enjoy free, safe, public transportation access. For

EASEMENTS - WHAT ARE THEY?E N G I N E E R I N G D I V I S I O N

Most commonly, public utilitieseasements (P.U.E.’s) are grantedto cities or utility companies torun power, water, sewer orstorm lines on private property.

However, you may also grant an access easement to your neighbor if your property is in the way of his access to aroad, or to anyone else who needs to have a legal right to access your land.

Owners’ use of property in easementsAfter an easement is granted, property owners continue to maintain the easement just like the rest of theirproperty. Construction and utility maintenance staff need to have access to the easement area and undergroundutilities need to be protected from damage, there are certain limitations to what the property owner can do withinthe easement area. Acceptable activities and limitations are listed below.

Acceptable use of easementsGround covers, grasses, field crops, fences, gardens, landscaping and vehicle access across easements including farmequipment.

Non-acceptable use of easementsTrees or shrubbery of any size, no permanent structures, however other limited uses may be allowed, as long asutility workers have access to the easement.

Utility’s use of property in easementsAnything installed within an easement by property owners may be removed if the utility agency needs access forinstallation, operations, inspections, maintenance, or utility line repair. These items are subject to disturbance ordamage when easement clearing is performed. Before any initial easement clearing, a letter will be sent to propertyowners explaining the purpose for clearing easements and the approximate duration of work to be performed. Thisallows property owners the opportunity to ask questions and to remove personal items from the easement prior toclearing.

Whenever personal items such as fences and portable buildings are left in the easement, construction and utilitymaintenance staff will carefully remove and set them aside. They will not replace personal items back into the utilityeasement area and they are not responsible for any damage that may occur to them.

The property owner is still responsible to maintain the easement and keep it free and clear from all obstructions. Todetermine if a property has an easement, the Engineering Division has maps to confirm the type, width, and locationof the easement.

Here is an example of a parcel map where there is a 5ft. Public Utility Easement.
