A message from Mayor Jaworsky

Welcome to the fall edition of the Program and Activities Guide!

Fall in Waterloo is a wonderful time to stay healthy and active. Our guide is full of social and high-paced activities including yoga, skating, playing cards, swimming and more. Finding your fit is easy when there are so many options to choose from!

Enjoy the outdoors and the vibrant colours of the season by taking a walk through our trails or visiting Waterloo Park. Then take in the City of Waterloo Museum’s current exhibit, Jewel of the City, which celebrates the 125th anniversary of Waterloo Park.

Later this month, take part in Culture Days, a nationwide initiative that celebrates arts and culture and supports artists in our community. Culture Days takes place Sept. 25 - 27. Be sure to visit waterloo.ca/artsandculture for details about events happening in Waterloo that weekend.

And don’t forget Oktoberfest! Mark your calendar for this celebration which runs October 9 - 17. I look forward to hosting my first Mayor’s Oktoberfest Luncheon on Thursday, October 8, at Waterloo Public Square. Join me and my fellow councillors from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as we serve up free Oktoberfest sausage, courtesy of Piller’s.

Be sure to stay current on the events happening around our city by visiting our website and by following us on Twitter and Facebook.

INSIDE THE GUIDE

About the Program & Activities GuideThe Program & Activities Guide is produced four times a year. Copies are delivered to most Waterloo households via the Waterloo Chronicle. Copies are available for pick up at recreation facilities and local agencies in the KW area.

The guide promotes leisure, arts, culture and sports opportunities offered by the city, the region, community organizations and local businesses.

From the newest classes to popular favourites, the guide brings you the best programs in active living, wellness, aquatic leadership and lessons, leisure pursuits, and personal development for all ages and abilities.

City of Waterloo programs and services are designated by the City of Waterloo logo.

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information listed within this guide. Program changes do occasionally occur and may not be reflected in the guide, due to information available at print deadlines. Check for updates at waterloo.ca/programguide

We welcome your comments and suggestions. Direct them to [email protected]

The upcoming winter issue of the guide will be available on November 25, 2015.

Keep our pool clean here.

HELP REDUCE POOL CLOSURESA pool fouling will cause a closure of our pools anywhere from 1-12 hours. Here are some healthy habits you can take to stop the spread of germs and reduce the number of closures in our pools:

• Take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. Waiting to hear “I have to go” may be too late.

• The use of a swim diaper is mandatory to enter the pool if a child is not yet fully toilet trained.

• Do not swim if you are feeling sick or have been sick in the past 24 hours. This is especially important for children in diapers.

• Wash your body thoroughly with soap and water before swimming. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our pool clean for all to enjoy.

We recognize the challenges that children and parents face when someone in the family is living with a terminal illness or has experienced the death of a loved one.

Our groups are offered to kids five and up and are run by qualified therapists and trained volunteers who help children explore their feelings around loss through the use of Music, Art and Play Therapy. All groups are offered at no cost to participants.

Do you live near a natural area? Help us protect the natural areas in our city!Respect property boundariesEncroachment is unauthorized use of publicland as an extension of one’s own property.

Altering public land by mowing, pruning, orplacing items such as garbage, yard waste, sheds, fences, play equipment, composters, vehicles, and bird feeders on public land is not permitted. Encroachment negatively impacts natural areas by smothering native vegetation, introducing non-native species, compacting soil and causing erosion.

Drain pools and hot tubs properlyWater from pools and hot tubs is generallyladen with chemicals that can have anegative impact on vegetation and waterfeatures when drained into a park ornatural area.

Place the drain tube on your property, awayfrom the park or natural area, to allow waterto filter into the soils in your yard.

Let wildlife feed from the forestWildlife relies on plants, soils and organicdebris for survival. When people harvest fromthe forest, plants may be depleted allowingundesirable plants to establish. Try plantingnative plants in your garden to enjoy, whileleaving the wild plants for wildlife to use andfuture generations to admire.

Respect our wildlifeFrom mammals and birds, to reptiles, amphibians, and insects, wildlife foster ahealthy forest and share it with residentsliving nearby.

Waterloo is home to non-poisonous snakes. A healthy population of these snakes around your property is beneficial because they can help keep local rodents in check – more so than cats!

A snake will slither away when startled and will not hurt you. Teaching children to observe wildlife from afar will help avoid confrontation while respecting the wildlife and their habitat. Please do not destroy burrows, nests or other habitat and remember to always stay on designated trails.
