WELCOME

A message from the mayorWelcome to the winter edition of the Program and Activities Guide! As you browse through these pages you will find plenty of great indoor and outdoor activities to keep you healthy and active for the entire season.

As winter gets into full swing, it’s a great time to bundle up and head outdoors. Starting in December, join us at Rink in the Square, which offers daily free public skating in uptown Waterloo. You can also check the city website to find local outdoor rinks in and around your neighbourhood. Each year a dedicated group of local volunteers make and maintain skating rinks for their neighbours to enjoy. It’s a great way to get out into the community and take in the winter weather!

Winter also means Winterloo! Join us February 14 – 16, 2015 in Waterloo Public Square for our annual winter family festival. Come out for a great weekend full of free public skating, incredible local food vendors, arts and crafts, and live entertainment.

If indoor activities are more your speed, there are plenty of sports and activities to try out this winter. CARL hosts a full roster of indoor programs to help you stay fit and beat the winter blahs. Why not try your hand at pickleball or an aquatics class? Whatever your interests, there is something for everyone that is sure to fit even the busiest of schedules.

I encourage you to stay connected with your Waterloo. Visit waterloo.ca and our Facebook, Twitter and Vimeo sites for the latest city events and news.

CURB THE

SALTThe Region of Waterloo is committed to protecting our water. We are working to reduce salt use on roads and on properties through innovative solutions and partnerships.

Wear winter boots.Wear a pair of winter boots with good tread to keep you safe and warm. We can’t always expect bare pavement.

Use salt wisely.Only use salt on icy areas and give it time to work. A little goes a long way and salt doesn’t work when it’s colder than -10°C.

Shovel sooner than later.Clear the white stuff as soon as you can so a snowy sidewalk doesn’t become an icy one. Instead of salt, let the sun do the melting for you.

Use salt alternatives.Use alternatives like sand or non-clumping kitty litter to create traction instead of salt.

Salt impacts our water.

We all have a role to play.

Here’s what YOU can do...
