What is Civil Engineering?

• “Civil engineering is the design and maintenance of public works such as roads, bridges, water and energy systems as well as public facilities like ports, railways and airports.”

safe disposal of hazardous waste, purification of air and water.

Sub-Disciplines• There are several sub-disciplines of Civil

Engineering:Material Science Coastal Science

Surveying Municipal and Urban

Construction and Structural Forensic and Control

Earthquake Transportation

Water Resource Geotechnical

Many engineers of different sub-disciplines must simultaneously work together to complete a project. Such as a survey engineer developing a proper drainage system for a new housing development, a municipal engineer completing the design of the roads, and a construction engineer working with the municipal engineer on road development.

Education• The education requirement to become a civil engineer is to

obtain a bachelor’s degree.• To be considered a professional a civil engineer must be licensed. • Civil engineers make up 17% of the engineering workforce.

Steel Bridge • The goal is to design a bridge

made out of steel as well as meeting all requirements that ASCE assign each year. Then at each Regional Conference, teams must build their bridges within certain amount of time.

• This will give WSU students opportunity to work as a team, finishing a project on time, and prepare them for jobs in the engineering workplace.

Concrete Canoe

• Every year WSU students participate in the Regional Concrete Canoe Competition. Their goal is to design a canoe that is made completely form concrete. And race the canoe against other Universities to compete in the ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition.

• This will give WSU students an opportunity to actually build something.

Young Civil Engineers

They typically work under professional engineers:• Analyzing survey reports and maps.• Testing building material for use in particular projects.• Developing estimates for specific jobs, such as

material, equipment and labor costs.• Design and plan transportations systems, hydraulic

systems.• Compare project proposals with government

regulations and potential environmental hazards.

Licensing Requirements

• Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam• Have minimum amount of experienceMichigan’s Requirements:• Pass FE and Professionals of Engineering Exam• Minimum of four years of experience after

obtaining bachelors • Some other exams may required for sub-

disciplines

Senior Civil Engineers

• Move into management or administrative positions. – Requires licensing and often a masters.– Management may include supervising a

construction site or overseeing a group of engineers in a firm.

• Some civil engineers with masters or PhD’s go on to teach or do research

Driving Civil Engineering Forward

• Increasing regulations and guidelines from the Environmental Protection Agency and new Municipal Government proposals effect many aspects of Civil Engineering driving new technologies to be developed:– Better water filtration to reduce pollution in rain

water run-off– Higher goals for clean drinking water– High speed rail to meet new infrastructure proposals

Total Phosphorus Removal• Total phosphorus

levels in rain water run-off is an occurrence in many places, heavily in agricultural areas

• High quantities can age a body of water too quickly• Regulatory goals: 50-65% removal

The Environmental Engineer’s Technological Goals

• Multistage wetland and phosphorus filter system using an array of filtration media

• Phosphorus water treatment systems of agricultural and municipal runoff.

• “Torpedo” filtration system for “agricultural tile drain and urban storm water outflows”

Opportunities • From 2010-20 the civil

engineering field is estimated to grow by 18%

• Wayne state hosts careers fairs which connects students to internship and research opportunities

• The student org, ASCE, provides additional networking opportunities to future Civil Engineers.

• The average civil engineer’s starting salary in 2012 was $62,355, up 3.8% from the previous year. The same as computer science engineers.
