Dialogue: Building Understanding, Relationships, Action &
Community
First-Year SeminarsSpring Quarter 2020
Tuesdays, 11:00 am-12:50 pm (EDU 098-008, CRN 62799) OR Tuesdays, 3:10-5:00 pm (EDU 098-011, CRN 85022)
OR Wednesdays, 1:10-3:00 pm (EDU 098-012, CRN 85023)
Have you ever disagreed strongly with someone? What was the result? Did you walk away? Fight? Avoid each other for years? Keep quiet about your opinion? Each of these options can be unsatisfying. It's not enough just to tolerate different points of view. It is not enough for us to listen politely to someone with whom we disagree strongly. These steps are helpful, even necessary sometimes. But they do not build connections and they do not build community. How about if you engage in dialogue instead? Dialogue is unique. In dialogue, a small group of participants share authentically, listen deeply, and engage on issues important to the community. Participants are not asked to agree about these important issues or give up their own identities.Instead, they are asked to make a serious effort to take the concerns of others into account even when disagreement persists. They are invited torecognize enough of each other’s valid human claims so they act differentlytoward each other. In this class, you will engage in dialogue with each other. You will also read, watch, and listen to course material between sessions on topics that helpexplain the reasons for dialogue, the benefits of dialogue, and the humanbehavior insights that relate to dialogue, such as the reasons people tend toignore information that disagrees with their point of view and the differencesbetween inclusion and belonging. ***PLEASE NOTE*** Dialogue Seminars carry EDU-098 course numbering for "Directed Group Study." When enrolling, select "Edit" to change number of units and enroll for 2 units.

Field Day is facilitated by UC Davis Undergraduate students and nearly 4,000 high schoolstudents come to campus to compete in agriculturally related career development events. Thisyear, they will have an exciting new partnership with Bayer Crop Sciences, which is located inWest Sacramento. Bayer will be hosting a Career and Information Booth from 10:30 - 3:30 atthe Silo under the Food Truck Patio Awning. Topics at the booth will include:

Study Abroad OpportunitiesMEDLIFE Development Corps in PeruMEDLIFE is running a week-long service learning trip called Development Corps this May,wherein global university students will travel to our headquarters in Lima, Peru and work withtheir architect and community leaders to plan and implement an urban development project. This year's project will be building a public green space in the urban settlements outside ofLima. MEDLIFE has built public spaces within various partner communities and has seenmany impacts, from increased security, land value, community cohesion to improved socialdevelopment for children. During the week, students will learn about the urban planning practices in Lima, as well as thelack of infrastructure in underserved communities, and the social and environmentalchallenges that this presents. They'll attend a community meeting to learn about the localplanning and community advocacy that MEDLIFE supports. They'll also learn howarchitecture, engineering, and urban planning principles apply throughout the project. Pleasesee this link for more details on this opportunity:https://www.medlifemovement.org/projects/development-corps.html Summer Opportunities in ChinaIGotoco (www.go-to.co), set up by Oxford University students, provides English-speakingstudents with funded opportunities to participate in summer camps in China, where they canwork towards a TEFL certificate, learn Mandarin, make new friends, explore the country, andhave a unique summer experience. In summer 2019, they helped 550 students visit China on funded trips and earn fully-fundedTEFL certificates, and they would like to bring these great opportunities to more University ofCalifornia, Davis students this summer. While you may be concerned about the current Coronavirus outbreak, and they want to assureyou that they take all students' safety and wellbeing extremely seriously. They currentlyexpect the virus outbreak to be controlled within the next 1-2 months and for summerprograms to go ahead as planned, especially as this kind of virus is usually much lessprevalent in the summer months. Gotoco is a certified social enterprise with a presence in the UK, China, USA and Hong Kong. They are rated highly by the 1000s of participants that have taken part in programs with us,and for our work we have been shortlisted for various awards. For our efforts in building acommunity of young China watchers and offering support to educational institutions acrossChina they were finalists in the China Social Impact Award 2019, an award organized by theBritish Chamber of Commerce in China in partnership with the United Nations. For our TEFLand China education initiatives, we were bronze award winners for Best Educational Productwith the British Youth Travel Awards. For their provision of summer internships in China tostudents from Oxford University we were granted Gold Star Host status, and we have beenawarded as the most 'fun' Teach Abroad provider by Gooverseas.com. Their programs are unique because they do not charge anyone to take part. Many programssimilar to us impose significant fees on students—they do not do this to ensure as many peopleas possible can go and explore this fascinating country. Participants only need to pay for theirflights and visas, then accommodation and meals are provided free of charge at their schoolsin China. Through their programs, students can spend a month or two teaching in picturesqueand exciting parts of China, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Yangshuo. While inspiring the nextgeneration of Chinese children to learn English, the students would also take part in Mandarinlessons, cultural trips and traveling. They also guarantee every participant a week’s accommodation in Yangshuo, Guangxi—oneof the most beautiful parts of the country—at the end of their summer camp.
