Stem Cell Research

• Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body. Serving as a sort of repair system for the body, they can theoretically divide without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential to either remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.

The Debate

• Stem cells can be extracted from very young human embryos -- typically from surplus frozen embryos left over from in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures at fertility clinics. A couple undergoing IVF is faced with four alternatives for their 16 or so surplus embryos:

• Have them discarded. Donate the embryos to another infertile couple in what is sometimes called "embryo adoption.". Donate the embryos for research Have the embryos preserved at very low temperatures.

Intelligent Design

• Intelligent design (ID) is the concept that "certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection." Its leading proponents are all affiliated with the Discovery Institute. They say that intelligent design is a scientific theory that stands on equal footing with, or is superior to, current scientific theories regarding the evolution and origin of life.

The Debate

• The position does not rely on belief in the Genesis account of creation. Rather, it demonstrates that intelligent design operates as a scientific theory of information even without any commitment to Christianity. The criteria of specified complexity is able to detect design in nature .

• An overwhelming majority of the scientific community views intelligent design as unscientific, as pseudoscienceor as junk science. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences has stated that intelligent design "and other claims of supernatural intervention in the origin of life" are not science because they cannot be tested by experiment, do not generate any predictions, and propose no new hypotheses of their own.
