Civitta is a company of people - people united by a common passion for solving problems, advising clients, and guiding others as they grow. And we do all of these things with a spirit of adventure.

Over the past few years, Civitta faced challenges and made the most of opportunities. Our family has also been growing. This year four new consultancies in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Russia joined our group. As a result, Civitta now has 150 employees in seven countries. With these additions, we have strengthened our value propositions in public policy and market research. In 2015, we observed steady growth in our smaller offices in Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova, where dedicated teams strengthened the Civitta brand. We are making strides in our effort to become the leading independent management consultancy in the Baltic states and in the western region of the CIS.

In this time of fast-paced growth, as we bring new professionals into our group, we are reaffirming our commitment to Civitta’s core values. To remain relevant in the marketplace, we focus on client impact, integrity in communication, and efficient operations. Putting these principles into practice brings unique value to our clients, partners, and employees alike.

We are looking forward to 2016 as a year for further strengthening our strong position in the large-scope international projects scene. In 2016, in each of the countries we operate in, we will continue to consistently build our expertise in market research while maintaining our focus on developing and investing in our people.

03\ What we stand for

INTEGRITY

“For me, integrity is all about being honest with everyone—with clients, with my team, and with everyone I am in touch with. I strongly believe that this is the right way to do business. Even if operating with a high standard of integrity means we are earning a bit less now, maintaining this standard is more valuable and profitable in the long run. Integrity is about building trust, so that people will turn to you with their questions and worries. I would openly voice a well-supported opinion if I thought the product a client was considering did not have a competitive edge, or if I thought the product was overpriced. If I see that a client’s teams are not running efficiently, due to motivation issues, unclear responsibilities, or simply due personality clashes, I would not hesitate to respectfully tell my client. I will also be honest when a client considers ordering a service from us that will not be useful at the client’s current stage.

Our clients have worries we can solve and they will call us again and again if they trust us. That trust will also lead customers to refer us to others. Satisfied Civitta clients show us that they trust us by showing off research and product building we did for them in their own network-ing events, by referring us to their peers, and by getting others excited about what Civitta does. If a client sug-gests Civitta to a friend who is starting a business and is strapped for smart, motivated people that can get their new business up to speed quickly—well, to me, that is the best endorsement I can get for Civitta’s work; that is an outcome of integrity in action.”

JUSTĖ PAČKAUSKAITĖAssociate Partner, Civitta Lithuania

ADVENTURE

“To my mind, the word adventure describes Civitta best. For example, I recently dove into one of the most interest-ing experiences of my life—I spent a couple of months in Senegal working on a mobile operator turnaround pro-ject.

Apart from the challenges Senegal poses, including food-born illnesses, a controlled risk of malaria, and ir-regular power shortages in the office, working in Africa, where anything is possible, is fun. People trusted us as foreign consultants because they felt our presence and ideas would bring a positive impact. While this welcom-ing attitude among the Sengalese gave us a lot of free-dom to experiment, sometimes it also made it difficult to get the valuable market insights of people working there. From a business perspective, the most interesting part of this experience was observing how Expresso Telecom is able to come up with an idea for a new product, imple-ment it, test it on three-million customers, and get feed-back—all in a matter of days. Expresso Telecom launched a 1,000 employee sales channel in a matter of weeks; in the developed world, these projects usually take months, or even years.”

MĀRTIŅŠ BAJĀRS

Associate Partner, Civitta Latvia

IMPACT

“At the core of Civitta lies a strong belief in bringing real impact to both our clients and stakeholders outside.

Since 2012, I have led Ajujaht—an entrepreneurship-focused business idea competition that is combined with an acceleration program which was started by Enterprise Estonia in 2007. The competition has been broadcasted on Estonia’s national television channel for three seasons already. Over the years, almost 4,000 ideas have been submitted and great success cases are emerging from Ajujaht alumni. Running Ajujaht does not only inspire people to bring out their ideas and establish their own companies, but also, because of publicity attracted, forms a more positive attitude towards entrepreneurs and building own businesses. Building on the knowledge gained, we are implementing a similar project in Moldova, hoping to foster development of startup ecosystem there. We are helping our partners to develop such projects constantly – either it is to make curricula’s in universities more entrepreneurial, developing new acceleration programs or pushing companies back on track for innovating new products or services.“

HARRI TALLINN

Team Leader of Ajujaht, Civitta Estonia

GROWTH

“I started working as a Junior Analyst at Civitta Belarus in September 2013, when I was in my final year of university. At that time, I had no experience, but I did have a great desire to learn and to work in consulting. It was a tough start. The flow of information about tasks and news can be confusing at first. But, my first year with Civitta was rich in new experience, impressions and challenges—there were new people, new things to learn, events to host and attend, and my first business trip. I thrived during that first year because Civitta creates a very supportive envi-ronment by surrounding new employees with motivated, ambitious, and smart people who encourage growth.

Now, after two-and-a-half-years with Civitta, I am proud of the experience I’ve gained in a range of industries: food, fashion retail, real estate, energy, information technolo-gy, healthcare, construction, and even toy production. My Civitta experience has also been an international experi-ence; I’ve worked with clients in small Belarusian towns and in large European capitals. Now that I’m a Senior An-alyst, I am involved in Civitta’s internal educational pro-gram. I help newcomers succeed as they take their first steps at Civitta, where the opportunities to grow are end-less.”

Civitta across markets06\

In 2015, an international team of Civitta analysts conducted extensive market research of pay television services for MTM London, a consultancy firm, working on behalf of their own client who had new market expansion aspirations. Civitta’s team was instrumental in screening thirteen markets, covering up to five potential distribution partners for five separate retail channels. Civitta extensively researched the competitive television subscription environment across three different market sub-segments: broadband providers, pay television companies, and over-the-top (OTT) solutions present. Most of the research, which included analyses of market share, pricing, product structure, and bundling, was performed over a three-week period; a feat that proves the dedication and flexibility of Civitta’s team.

» Civitta performed extensive market research, covering 13 markets and reviewing approximately 500 companies.

» The project took an estimated 1,000 hours of analysis and an additional 500 hours of work were completed by interns. At least 1,000 hours of Civitta’s work on this project was completed within three weeks of the project’s launch.

» The strong understanding of the media landscape that Civitta delivered to MTM London was built on different content management strategies, a variety of pricing approaches, and considerations of the roles of OTT and Netflix on European markets and beyond.

One of Civitta’s most fascinating projects in 2015 was an unforgettable adventure in Senegal. In Senegal, Civitta’s international team worked with Expresso Telecom and completed an organizational turnaround. Civitta’s tasks were mainly focused on identifying a value maximizing proposition for each individual customer and on deciding where to place base stations while ensuring reliable connectivity in a country with 14.1 million citizens. Civitta’s success in Senegal demonstrates a strong knowledge of the telecommunications sector, a wisdom Civitta built over years. The success of this program proved that Civitta’s skilled analysts are making real impacts on communities and bringing valuable insights to companies globally.

Belarus. The team is working to create an alternative school that will provide children with an adequate education in an environment that focuses not only on academic knowledge, but also on nourishing children’s creative talents by supporting personality development, and teaching self-awareness and personal reflection, and responsibility. Civitta employees structured the project’s concept, prepared relevant materials to kick-start the project, and guided the Tarantiny and Sons team through negotiations with potential investors.

. . . help realize entrepreneurial ideas.

We have had the pleasure of contributing, right from the start, to the realization of great ideas. Thanks to our teams of ambitious and determined people, we have achieved incredible growth over the course of just a few years. Our own successes inspire us to help entrepreneurs who are not afraid to take risks and are ready to engage in bold experiments. Civitta Lithuania and Civitta Estonia have also established reputations for successfully working with start-ups, but we are particularly proud of Civitta Russia’s progress. In an atmosphere with limited public funding for start-ups, Civitta Russia became a mecca for innovative start-ups seeking consulting services. Civitta Russia provided these start-ups with free office spaces and professional advice on building and accelerating sustainable business models.

. . . support sports communities.

Civitta employees are keen sports enthusiasts and love to participate in sporting events. In 2015, to promote a fitness- and sport-friendly environment, Civitta helped write a funding application for holding one of the famous international Ironman triathlons in Otepaa, Estonia. Civitta’s efforts were also behind the application for the World Orienteering Championship to be hosted in 2017 in Tartu, Estonia. In Lithuania, Civitta worked with the organizers of Vilnius’s annual Marathon to develop a strategy to define the event’s vision and long-term goals. Furthermore, thanks to Civitta’s help, the Kaliningrad region’s ice hockey league received grant funding for a youth sports program designed to encourage fair play and positive cooperation among the league’s youngest athletes.

We.... . . engage with the leaders of the future.

Since its inception in 2010, Civitta has been a keen supporter of students and their initiatives. As a company, Civitta frequently works in the education sector to develop policies and improve higher education institutions, which encourages us to also engage in the projects born within those institutions. Through these engagements, we share our business knowledge with the leaders of the future. That is why we are an intellectual partner of Peak Time, an annual international competition for business students organized at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga. We also partner with Creative Shock, an international social business competition and conference organized by the students of ISM University of Management and Economics in Vilnius. Civitta supports these initiatives by preparing business case studies for the competition’s final events, by serving on event juries, by coaching participants, and by introducing participants to management consulting and the industry at large.

. . . inspire a new generation to think differently.

It takes time to implement significant changes and it takes even longer to see meaningful results. To promote positive change, it is essential to initiate conversations about important topics with youth. Thus, Civitta Estonia was pleased to organize a Girls and Boys Career Day in 2015. The event, initiated by Estonian Ministry of Social Affairs, strove to raise awareness of gender equality issues, especially those related to wage gaps between women and men and gender-based discrimination in the workplace. The project presented professions that are stereotypically associated with only one gender to high school students from multiple perspectives. Civitta was built with a vision — a vision that prioritized helping clients achieve meaningful change. This vision also acknowledges a responsibility to share Civitta’s success with the community at large. At Civitta, we believe that in many cases sustained pro bono activities are more valuable to the community than small one-time monetary donations. With such a strong talent pool on hand, Civitta is capable of offering professional help in developing and implementing high-impact projects to various start-ups and also to organizations in the fields of education and sports, among others.

REGIONAL EXPANSION

Civitta’s regional network consulting platforms have built a strong presence in seven home markets. In our pursuit to become the leading independent consultancy in central eastern Europe, we will expand to three more countries by 2018. We are actively reinvesting to achieve continuous expansion and we are bringing new companies and partners into our group that share our values and can bring reciprocal benefits to our network.

PEOPLE FOCUS

Civitta has always been a company of people—smart, ambitious, creative people. In the coming year, we will continue to recruit the best graduates from our home markets. We will also continue to enhance Civitta’s unique learning environment with even more internal and external trainings to improve employees’ hard and soft skills and with dynamic project experiences that span industries, work tasks, and markets. Because we also want to harness and export our team member’s potential beyond our home markets—particularly in our areas of expertise: telecom consulting, entrepreneurship programs, and outsourced data analyst on hire services—our strategic goal is to ensure that Civitta’s employees have the growth opportunities and adventures they need to help Civitta succeed at home and abroad.

INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC POLICY TENDERS

Having grown to a company of more than 150 employees, now one of Civitta’s key goals is to become an even stronger player in the field of international public tender. Funded by third party donors, international tenders are designed to solve large-scale, complex problems faced by governmental public administration bodies. We believe in the competences we have gained in our home markets. By harvesting the benefits of these competencies and combining them with those in Civitta’s network of branches, our combined expertise, built over years, can wield an even greater impact.

MARKET RESEARCH CAPABILITIES

Civitta has worked on a number of creative and challenging research projects, ranging from retail analytics tools to information technology management issues. Our teams of analysts collect and analyze data for our clients and our project consultants perform varied market research. We now see market research as one of the key needs of our clients and want to further strengthen this competence by consistently offering market research services to clients in all of our markets. We want to improve value proposition by applying state-of-the-art methodologies and we want to use cross-industry knowledge to solve our clients’ problems.
