The Clark community came together on September 10,2011 in a ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of theSeptember 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Clark resident JamesNelson, a 16-year veteran of the Port Authority PoliceDepartment was killed in the line of duty that day whilerescuing others at the World Trade Center. Mr. Nelson hadalso rescued people in the aftermath of the World TradeCenter bombing in 1993. Jim was 40 years old; he leftbehind his wife Rosanne and daughters Caitlin and Annewho were 5 and 11 at the time. According to accounts he

rushed to the scene shortly after 9 a.m. on September 11 from the PortAuthority Police Academy, where he taught recruits, in Jersey City.

Clark Resident David Toma was bestowedthe prestigious Four Chaplins BronzeMedallion. Toma dedicated his life tomotivating and mentoring youth as a publicspeaker and counselor. He influencedmillions world wide through over 15,000lectures.Renowned as one of the world’s “greatest

detectives”, Toma uses his life experiencesand his 21 years in law enforcement inNewark, NJ to teach. His innovative stylelead to two television series based on hiscareer, “Toma” and “Baretta”. A screenplayhas also been written about him.Toma authored six books, the latest being

“Unforgettable- the life and legend of DavidToma.” His books and videos are used in

schools, hospitals, jails and treatmentcenters as healing tools.The Four Chaplains is the latest in a long

list of humanitarian awards and honoraryPhds. Canada presented him with anOlympic Medal for his work there in 1976.Toma lectures are as dramatic as his life.

Known for going undercover in disguise,he lived in the world of the criminals anddespite the danger did his job using non-violent methods. His record was unmatchedin the number of arrests and a 98%conviction rate.Toma put criminals behind bars but he

Hills Golf Complex in Clark hosted an event toraise money for a hurricane Irene relief fund.Money raised will be presented to the mayors ofClark, Cranford andWestfield to be used in theirtowns relief efforts. Money was raised indifferent ways throughout the evening; HyattHills donated a percentage of mini-golf sales,street type vendors set up booths and donatedtheir sales, local businesses sent gift baskets toraffle off and Senoritas “now more then”Mexican donated a generous portion of thenights proceeds. “We’re part of a specialcommunity here” said new Excutive ChefChristopher Ciccia, “I am very happy to beworking back in my home town”. Christopherjoined the Senorita Family in August and madean impact immediately, the menu, a MexicanItalian Fusion is truly a style that cannot bemissed. “I use only the freshest ingredients andprepare all food to order.”Live entertainment was also a big part of the

evening. A local band “Punch Bully” donatedthe afternoon to help this great cause.Punch Bully will be performing again at

The Clark chapter of UNICO proudlyannounces the fifth Annual Italian AmericanFeast to be held this fall in Clark. The event willbe held for three days during the Columbus Dayweekend, October 7th, 8th and 9th, in theparking lot on the recreation side of themunicipal building and also in front of the tenniscourts.The feast will consist of many of your favorite

Italian foods including sausage, pizza, zeppole,eggplant, calzone, pastas, seafood and muchmore. We will also have beer and wine. Therewill be game trailers for everyone to take achance to win prizes, plus a money wheel,50/50, and an LCD Flat Screen TV raffle.Children will be entertained by taking a spin

Join author, photographer and lecturer,Kevin Woyce as he discusses how The Statue ofLiberty was built and the key people involved inher creation. He will showcase both originalphotographs and historic images of the Statue ofLiberty. Teens can help plan programs andactivities at the library by becoming part of theTeen Advisory Board. The first meeting willtake place on Wednesday, September 21st at3:30 p.m. This is just a small sample of the many

During the summer, St. Agnes School inClark has geared up for another new andexciting school year. Our cafeteria has beencompletely renovated, as well as the stage in theauditorium. Also, if you happen to drive by, youwill find the school looking so much brighterand alive with school spirit. Our brand newgymnasium being built is coming along nicely.Some areas of the school even received a freshcoat of paint.St. Agnes opened its doors to all middle

school students on Wednesday, September 7,2011 and to elementary students on Thursday,September 8, 2011. All students assembled inthe playground area at 8:00 am on theirrespective start date with the exception of theKindergarten students as they met their teacherat the classroom for a quick “photo-op”. Charter schools will be the focus of a programto be presented by the League of Women Votersof the Union Area at 7 p.m. Sept. 20 in theCranford Community Center, 220 Walnut Ave.Sandy Matsen, a former president of the

League of Women Voters of New Jersey and co-chair of the state League’s EducationCommittee, will be the speaker. Her topic willbe “Charter Schools: A League Perspective.”The meeting, which is free and open to be

public, will be the first of three Union areaLeague programs being held as part of a nationalLeague study on education. It will be followedby membership meetings in October andNovember, when a special committee formedfor the study will present additional informationon various aspects of education. At the end ofthe November meeting, members will try toreach consensus on a series of questions

concerning education from national Leagueheadquarters.Similar programs are being held this fall by

local Leagues throughout the country. Based onconclusions reached at these meetings, thenational League will then take an officialposition on education and will lobby electedofficials in support of it. This is the same grassroots decision-making process followed by theLeague in forming positions on a wide range ofissues, ranging from finance to social policy tothe environment.The Union Area League is comprised of

The Polish Cultural Foundation invites the community to its AnnualPolish Harvest Festival which is being held on Sunday, September 25starting at 3pm at 177 Broadway in Clark. The Polish American FolkDance Company of Brooklyn, New York will lead the festival programwith their presentation of the harvest with folk dances and humorous folksongs (traditional couplets). There will be plenty of Polish ethnic foodavailable as well as a cash bar with Polish beer and spirits. PCF has inviteda selection of polish businesses to the event, which will have concessionsavailable with Polish historical artifacts, jewelry, t-shirts, music and CD’s,and other items for sale. There will be music for everyone’s enjoyment andthe dance floor will be open to all. Children can also play games organizedby The Polish Girl Scouts. Door prizes will be awarded at random andattendees can enter for a chance to win a 50/50 raffle.The general public is invited to attend this festive event in

celebration of Poland’s traditions and heritage. Tickets for the festivalare $8 for adults, with free admission for children under 12 years.The Polish Cultural Foundation also invites local residents, businesses

Poland’s most recognized traditions. Throughout Poland’s history, the focus on the “Dozynki”tradition revolve around the harvest representing the fruits of the farmers’labors, as well as their ability to sustain themselves through the wintermonths.The Polish Cultural Foundation, located in Clark, New Jersey, is a non-
