At Whitchurch we aim to nurture in the children a love of literature and language, and the confidence to continue reading and writing throughout their lives Children are encouraged to write clearly and with confidence in any given genre. They are taught to use punctuation and grammar accurately, to be able to proofread their own work and make amendments and improvements. We give children a wide range of opportunities in which to develop their writing skills and display work of which they are proud. We use a ‘Talk for Writing’ approach across the school. We believe ‘Hot and Cold Writing’ gives the children the tools to be able to assess and improve their work and story mapping, helps the children to be able to internalise language patterns. Children who read for pleasure gain a richer vocabulary, more knowledge, critical thinking skills and become independent learners. Guided Reading is an important part of our curriculum. Children work in focused groups to develop their reading skills and their understanding of texts. We provide children with rich reading experiences within the English lessons and encourage them to appreciate the author’s use of language and writing techniques in order to develop their own writing skills. Our children take their reading books home daily to share with their families/carers. As they go through the school, they are given more responsibility for making their own reading choices from the books we have in school.

At Whitchurch we recognise that mathematics is an integral part of everyday life, an essential tool that all pupils need both at school and as adults. Recognising this importance, we aim to give children a wide range of mathematical experiences that help develop skills such as logical thinking, decision making, communication and the ability to work systematically. Maths is taught mainly through a daily lesson in line with NC expectations, although where possible we also identify opportunities to apply and develop mathematical skills in other curriculum areas and through our cross-curricular Topic work. Our aim is for children to feel confident and positive about their maths, to engage actively in mathematical activities, becoming increasingly responsible for their own learning, and to develop understanding of how and when to apply the skills and concepts they have learned.

At Whitchurch Primary School our Science curriculum includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum (2013) and the Early Learning Goals, but also activities, themes and topics which enrich and extend them. We take very seriously the 'core subject' status of Science, and give it the equivalent of one full afternoon every week. The organisation of the classes dictates that the long term plans in Key Stages 1 and 2 follow a rolling programme. We aim to teach the children the fundamental importance of Science. As well as developing the children's scientific knowledge, understanding and skills, we try to create a sense of wonder and enjoyment, and to engender an ongoing – and we hope, lifelong - interest in the subject. We aim to develop in the children enquiring, questioning and reflective minds, an understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science and its uses and implications today and for the future. We teach them about risk and how to reduce it in order to work safely. We introduce them to consideration of moral dilemmas that can result from scientific developments and encourage them to show sensitivity to the interface between religious beliefs and science.

At Whitchurch Primary school we believe in equipping the children with the skills they need to be competent users of technology across a range of platforms. We teach them transferable skills, not particular packages. Children have a weekly Computing lesson and a range of clubs. Technology is also used across other lessons to embed the skills and knowledge through real life application. Whitchurch Primary School aims to ensure that all our pupils: • Can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of
computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
• Can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
• Can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
• Are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology

Geography develops children’s knowledge and understanding of people and places. At Whitchurch, we learn about the wider world as well as local areas, looking at the physical, social and economic issues surrounding each case study. Use of maps, atlases, photos and the internet ensures a well-balanced and interactive method of learning for all pupils. There are many cross-curricular links with subjects such as literacy, numeracy and computing. In the Foundation Stage, children learn about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects and materials. They are able to discuss their own immediate environment and understand how environments may vary from one to another.

At Whitchurch we believe that History fires pupils’ curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world. We aim to bring history to life and to instil a desire to find out about our predecessors. We view History as a great deal more than learning facts. We see it as an opportunity to develop skills of enquiry and questioning; to become open minded “historical detectives” and explore the past in an engaging way. We aim to provide first hand experiences with class visits, role play, visiting experts and workshops playing an important part in all our topics. Termly and half termly topics give scope for cross curricular work. Through History, children learn to make comparisons and links between the past and modern times and discover how and why things have changed. They learn about people and events in the past, in Britain and the wider world, and realise that these have influenced our lives today. Children are taught how to investigate and record their findings in interesting and creative ways including writing, art, drama and computing.

significant historical events, people and places in their own locality
Autumn 2014 Spring 2015 Summer 2015
Year 1/2 Changes within living memory. Ourselves – how have things changed since our grandparents were young? Changes in technology. The gunpowder plot – significant events in history.
People who changed the world – significant individuals. History of local shops
What was life like in a medieval castle?
Key Stage Two
Pupils should be taught about:
changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age
the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain
Britain’s settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scots
the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the time of Edward the Confessor

Design and Technology [D&T] is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. At Whitchurch Primary School, our D&T curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and the Early Learning Goals. The organisation of the classes dictates that the long term plans in Key Stages 1 and 2 follow a rolling programme. Units of work are planned taking account of the 'Six Essentials of D&T' as defined by the Design and Technology Association (DATA):- the needs of users, clear purpose, design decisions, work/function, innovation and authenticity. D&T is taught in blocks of three full days per term: this has the advantage of allowing children to work straight through a full project from inception to completion, with the iterative process inherent in it. Much of the work is practical and investigative, and many projects are cross curricular, overlapping particularly with Maths, Science, Art, Computing and History. Children are given opportunities to become creative, innovative, enterprising and capable of leadership to equip them for their future lives as workers and citizens. As well as teaching them the design, engineering and scientific knowledge, understanding and skills they need, we aim to foster creativity, teamwork, a sense of fulfilment, an appreciation of the achievement of others and a recognition of how different cultures have contributed to technology. We aim to raise awareness of ways in which appropriate technology can improve the quality of life, but also to begin to see the moral dilemmas created by some technological advances.

At Whitchurch we believe Art and Design contributes to the development of the whole child, aesthetically, physically, emotionally, socially and cognitively. It provides all children with the opportunity to express themselves imaginatively, creatively and develop their understanding of, and respond to the world around them. Children are exposed to many visual, tactile and sensory experiences and to present their art using a range of artistic techniques. Whitchurch Primary School enables pupils to become involved in, appreciate and enjoy the visual arts and how it can enrich their personal lives. They learn the part that art and design plays in their own and others’ lives, in contemporary life and in different times and cultures. Art at Whitchurch primary school gives children a media in which to express themselves. Each year we hold an ‘art week’ during which we have a visit from an art expert, impersonating one of the great artists. The art produced in this week is entered into an art competition and displayed at our local village hall. This teaches children to draw in a specific style and also learn about the great artists. We aim to teach art in a cross curricular way, teaching art through our termly topics.

. Music education at Whitchurch offers children a way of gaining more from the music both within them and in the world around them. It is a way for children to express themselves creatively and to show their talents and abilities. At Whitchurch, music is taught throughout the school as a class subject. Children have the opportunity from KS1 to learn to play tuned instruments. They begin with the ocarina in year 1 and move on to string instruments and recorders in KS2. There are opportunities for private tuition for additional instruments. Children who play instruments are encouraged to demonstrate their skills in our annual ‘house music assembly’. We aim to inspire children and instil within them a passion for music. They learn about music from different cultures, times and listen to the work of great musicians. Children compose, perform and listen to a range of music genres. They participate in regular singing assemblies and have the opportunity to be part of a school choir. We aim to teach music through topics where appropriate. We implement computing where relevant as a method of composition and teach children of ways to learn music in our technologically developing world. Children have the opportunity to attend musical workshops outside of school and to learn from music specialists.

At Whitchurch we believe learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for the pupils. Pupils develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. Learning another language raises awareness of the multilingual and multicultural world and introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others. In Whitchurch Primary School, French is taught to children in Key Stage 2 in a 40 to 50 minute lesson. Children are introduced both to the language and to features of the culture through taking part in traditions and experiences
KS1 French is taught on a more informal basis through using it for real purposes e.g. taking the register, classroom commands, celebrating achievements. We believe that a foreign language is effectively taught in ordinary classroom situations, using regular routines, songs and games which children find enjoyable and motivating.

At Whitchurch, children are taught to understand and respect the importance of religious beliefs in the world around them. We encourage children to use and develop their skills in RE and to participate in critical thinking. We aim to ensure that the RE curriculum is challenging, dynamic and relevant to pupils of all ages. In the Foundation Stage, RE is taught through topics based upon children’s own lives and their own experiences. During Key Stage 1, the study of Christianity is introduced and aspects of Judaism and Islam are taught. There is also consideration for non-religious beliefs. In Key Stage 2, the study of Christianity is developed and religious beliefs within Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism and Islam are explored.

At Whitchurch Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Economic education is an important component of the whole curriculum. We believe that the promotion of health and well-being is central to the life of the school and its relationships with the surrounding community. It promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, emotional, social and physical development of pupils at the school and is at the core of everything we do. It prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life and living in the wider world. It develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. It also teaches our children about their responsibility towards others and the environment and the understanding of the mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, environmental, cultural and social influences that shape the community and the interactions of individuals within it. At Whitchurch we focus on a different theme each term (see below). We share these themes in assemblies and a value is chosen alongside each theme, which children use as a stimulus when voting for a ‘pupil of the week,’ in their class. The different themes are: Friendship, Cooperation, Responsibility, Honesty, Respect and Courage. In addition, we have regular class circle times which allow the opportunity for reflections and discussions and for the children to talk about any thoughts or worries.
