An educated consumer of the news understands understands

where information originateswhere information originates.

Page 27: Class20 pr

Again, not all PR people are evil.

Page 28: Class20 pr

Just some.

Page 29: Class20 pr

Like this guy.

Page 30: Class20 pr

Wasn’t he just doing his job?

Page 31: Class20 pr

“Let them eat cake.”

- Marie Antoinette

Page 32: Class20 pr

What she meant by that was that you all have been working so hard, you deserve a treat.

Page 33: Class20 pr

That’s some good PR work.

And that is only mildly joking.

Page 34: Class20 pr

The evolution of PR.

• In 18821882, robber baron William Henry Vanderbilt said, “The public be damned.”

• That incited a negative public reaction, which lead to government action regulating industry.

• The statement represented Social-Social-DarwinismDarwinism: survival of the fittest.

Page 35: Class20 pr

The evolution of PR, part II.

• Social-DarwinismSocial-Darwinism hurt business, so the public relations business was invented to portray leaders in a more positive light.

• In 1906, organizations began harnessing the mediaharnessing the media to make themselves sound more sympathetic.

Page 36: Class20 pr

The idea was to win public support.

How?

Page 37: Class20 pr

The secrets to successful PR.

Page 38: Class20 pr

1. Appear to be completely open.

We have nothing to hide.

Page 39: Class20 pr

2. Make the big shots available to the media.

Page 40: Class20 pr
Page 41: Class20 pr
Page 42: Class20 pr
Page 43: Class20 pr
Page 44: Class20 pr

3. Turn negative news into positive news.

Page 45: Class20 pr

Spin.

Boo.

Page 46: Class20 pr

Successful PR:4. Avoid hyperbole.

Don’t make claims you can’t live up to.

Page 47: Class20 pr

There is a fine line between PR and propaganda.

But the connotations are huge.

Page 48: Class20 pr

In theory, PR is supposed to be for good.

The intention is to facilitate,

to provide information.

Page 49: Class20 pr

Propaganda is about

manipulating minds.

Page 50: Class20 pr

“John McCain will continue Bush policies.”

“Barack Obama

is a socialist.”

Page 51: Class20 pr

Both PR and propaganda are about gaining influence.

Page 52: Class20 pr

But PR isn’t always evil.

Just sometimes.

Page 53: Class20 pr
