DECEMBER 2014 Proving Size Doesn’t Matter Since 1986 Vol. 28 No. 12
The Newsletter of the Central Pennsylvania Model Car Club
The November meeting was a blast; well attended and loads of fun. The model turnout was a little
light versus other months, but that doesn’t mean the good stuff didn’t make it to the meeting.
Take for example, this beauty. Talk about your classic plastic!

Craig’s List… It was really neat to see such a great turnout for the November meeting. I always enjoy seeing how many
guys turn up almost every month now for the meetings. To see how the club has grown over the years has
been a real encouragement to me, as it means we must be doing SOMETHING right!
Speaking of the November meeting..we had the third highest auction we have ever had! We did $1831.00 !!!
WELL DONE guys! The neat thing also along with that was how the bidding went this year. Thanks to all of
you!
Thanksgiving is coming and that means the Sunday after Turkey Day is Barry's Toy Show! Let's FILL the
tables he so graciously donates each year to set up a club display and allow the public to see our
workmanship! We always get a LOT of interest and compliments! Blair has agreed to head this up, so let's
help him out with set up and bringing a lot of models to display. Please contact Blair to help set up on
Saturday at 5:00..either by phone (419-598-4366) or email ([email protected]) to let him know you
will be available to help out.
This year also, Craig Holler is putting on a contest at his show, with cash awards. It will be interesting to see
how our fellow club members fare with that.
Next month is December already! PLEASE don't forget the Toys for Tots donations !! Let's keep a grip on
being the largest contributors in the region! That is a real honor and testament to the generosity of this club
and one we should certainly be proud of! We have a really good reputation in the community, and that
speaks well of every person in this club! Thank you for that! Who would have thought we would ever be this
big..and be so well thought of as a model club? That is pretty impressive!
Also on the agenda for December is the annual Christmas party and "Resurrection Build" this year. Let's fill
the table with an old glue bomb that you have transformed into a thing of beauty!
January will start our new presidents reign of terror. Congratulations (or condolences) to Blair for his hard
fought campaign to be our fearless leader for the next year! Rick once again will be the one sitting beside
our leader as his vice president (and is to have the food for January)..and Tony is once again enshrined as
our treasurer. Speaking of Tony..I want to thank him for the years of being such a good steward of our
finances! In the same vein..a HUGE thanks to Dan for his efforts every month to get the newsletter out. One
of the reasons the newsletter was so delayed this year was my fault guys. I am the one that was usually late
with my article and that held Dan up. So..I am sorry for that..and hopefully Blair will do a better job at that
than I did. And as for Rick...thank YOU my friend for always being there to open up and get things rolling
every month! You did good!
Then comes February, and Mike Hemp’s 40 Ford contest, using the Revell 40 Ford convertible kit as the
starting point. Let's see what you can do with a 40 vert!
Finally...thanks to all of you for the support and encouragement you gave me this past year. It meant a lot
and I am grateful for that. Have a great holiday season and...allow me to encourage each and every one of
you to....BUILD SOMETHING!
Where the heck did 2014 go? We’re knocking on 2015’s door and it seems like we just in through
2014’s! The year was a good one for the club overall, with the highest membership head count in our
club’s history. We had great turnout at pretty much every meeting, and the quality of the builds entered
in the opens and theme has been outstanding. I’m really looking forward to the coming year, but I’m
waiting to really amped up about it until after the December meeting when we’ll hold the Resurrection
Build contest, collect for Toys for Tots, and have our annual luncheon. It’s going to be a great last
meeting of 2014 meeting in Mt. Wolf!
We continue to try to make things better for the club, and while we don’t always make everyone happy,
we do our level best with some decent success. That said, with 100+ members, the odds are against us
for satisfying everyone. If I may, I’d like to share a bit of advice; if you’re grumbling about something the
club does or doesn’t do, pipe up. Better yet, get involved. Constructive criticism is a fair start, but action
gets results. Instead of sitting on your chair warmer and grousing about something, get involved and
make it better. I can’t guarantee every suggestion will get acted upon, but they’ll all be heard.
I have been trying to get the newsletter sent out sooner each month but haven’t managed to do so. My
work schedule is very heavy and as hard as I’ve tried I haven’t had a lot of success. For those who
receive the full color issue by e-mail, you’ve always received them a week before the meeting, which
isn’t great, but getting them electronically is as fast after as completion as you can get. The folks who
rely on hard copies are at a disadvantage, but that’s just the way it is. If everyone had email, there’d be
no problem but that’s not the case. Printing is a burden on the club, and delivery to members depends
on their attendance at a meeting Mailing them all is not an option because it ends up casting more per
newsletter than a membership. The executive committee is working on ideas to ensure quicker delivery,
but it’s not easy to come up with a solution that will make everyone happy. (see the previous
paragraph). Some clubs – if they even have a newsletter – do not provide a hardcopy, and frankly, that
makes sense. I’m not saying that’s what we’ll do, but rather, what we currently do makes us the
exception.
It may be time for me to reformat the newsletter and go with something a lot smaller in order to make it
easier to complete, get it distributed to those with no computer sooner, and curb the complaints. We’ll
see how things shake out in future discussions on the matter.
And don’t forget:

2015 CPMCC Meeting Dates
Tony Shanko provided the following meeting dates
to the guys at the fire hall. These are all
Saturdays, and there is no meeting at all in June
due to Street Rods, and our August meeting is an
off-site picnic.
Jan. 3rd Model Of The Year Voting
Feb. 7th
Mar. 7th Annual Banquet
Apr. 4th
May 2nd
July 4th
Sept. 5th
Oct. 3rd
Nov. 7th Elections & Auction
Dec. 5th Christmas Party & Toys for Tots
Toys For Tots At December Meeting
Don’t forget to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the
December meeting. Each year we fill an SUV to
capacity with our donation to this great cause.
We also have our Annual Christmas Party at this
meeting. Please keep in in the standing rule:
Donate or Don’t Eat. If you don’t bring a toy,
please leave the subs for others. You’re welcome
to attend, but unless you bring a toy, you should
eat a big breakfast before you get to the meeting.
Annual Auction A Success
Part of what keeps our club solvent is the annual
auction. Member dues don’t cover the whole nut
and the boost we get in November goes a long
way toward covering our numerous expenses. (By
the way, a big thanks is owed Tony Shanko, who
does a fantastic job as Treasurer – Ed.)
Our record year was 2001, followed by another big
hitter, and 2014 came in third, which is great
news. Expenses don’t go down, and as we grow in
head count, some of those expenses increase
even more.
The bidding was solid, and went very smoothly.
There was a lot of plastic offered up, and we all
know that isn’t a bad thing.
It’s worthy to note that in addition to the on-site
bidding, there were some pretty hefty donations to
the cause from Chris Whalley and Lyle Willits.
Well done, members!

News Desk Model Of The Year
There’s only one more meeting in 2014, and it’s
time to remind you all that during our January
meeting, we vote on the winners of the variety of
themes and opens, and pick the Model of the
Year. Obviously, we can’t list them here since
we’re not done with all the competitions, but we
can tell you the model MUST BE PRESENT at the
January meeting in order to be eligible.
It’s Membership Renewal Time
The deadline for renewing your club membership
for 2015 is March, but some folks take the
initiative to do so early and get it out of the way.
December is a great time to renew, so that it’s
done and you don’t need to try to remember after
the new year.
Renewals are $20 for adults and $10 for juniors
(under 16 as of January 1, 2015) and if you are
paying by check, make it out to Tony Shanko, and
not to the club.
As a reminder to newer members who joined in
September of this year, you are covered through
2015. There is no need for your to renew your
membership until we’re getting ready to flip the
calendar to 2016.
Motorama 2015
The Motorama returns to Harrisburg on February
21st & 22nd, and once again, Leroy Hartley will be
coordinating a model build-off. The kits are
provided by the show organizers, and the idea is
for most of the final assembly (painting done
ahead of time) to occur at the show. If interested
in participating, please contact Leroy at the
December meeting. This is a cool way to gain
exposure for the hobby, and club, and it sounds
like a blast!
Officer Election Results
Officer elections were held at the November
meeting, and Blair Pletcher was elected as
CPMCC president for 2015, replacing incumbent
Craig Turner.
Rick Woleslagle will return as vice-president, and
Tony Shanko will repeat as treasurer.
We are glad to see Rick and Tony stay seated at
the adult table for 2015, and welcome Blair as he
assumes his leadership role for the first time.
Congratulations, fellas!
Benefit Held For Pat Crittenden
We received an update from Bonnie Crittenden
regarding Pat’s health, and we are saddened by
the news. “Pat has fallen ill with Terminal Stage 4
lung cancer that has spread to his brain. He's
been thru some radiation treatments and 2
rounds of chemo that didn't do anything
substantial. Treatment has stopped and Pat has
Hospice at home for now. He's still getting around
but he's been really sick thru this illness.”
It was announced too late to be mentioned in the
November newsletter, but we were able to
broadcast by email that a fundraiser was planned
for friends and family on Sunday, 11/30.
NSRA Nationals East 2015
We’re pleased to announce that the guys at the
NSRA have invited us back to the York Fairgrounds
for the 2015 edition. Blair has already confirmed
to them we will be glad to be there!

One of the sleekest supercars ever designed. And don't believe all you read about how the car was
compromised by replacing the V12 of the concept with "the engine from a Metro". Not exactly... the
engine is a custom version of the TWR racing engine that powered the Jaguar XJR-11 Le Mans car, so
its racing heritage is strong

how this one turned out.
