A “FEW” WORDS FROM FR. ROBERT

“A Part of Something Greater”

Last week we heard from Bishop Hartmayer about the Annual Catholic Appeal, formerly known as the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The change in

the name of the campaign makes sense. Our appeal is not for the Bishop - it never was. Rather, our appeal is for the good and saving work of

the whole Church in the Diocese. Every year Bishop Hartmayer takes the time to speak to all of the Catholics in the Diocese of Savannah about

the needs of the Church and it’s important mission to the people of Georgia. You’ve all seen the videos and St. Anne’s always makes its goal for

the campaign. We realize that we are all a part of something greater than ourselves, something greater than our parish, and our own local

interests and needs. St. Anne is the third largest parish in the Diocese and our goal reects that. We have always done our part in this important

initiative and I know we will continue to do our part in service of the Church in Columbus. It is my hope and prayer that we will not only meet our

goal but that we will surpass it. The Diocese of Savannah needs our support, and the many poor that are served through the work of the Church

need our support. We must never forget that we are part of something greater than ourselves.

A Very Important Reminder

A couple of people have approached me requesting that we stop the reception of the cup and the sign of peace at Mass because of u season.

Everyone is certainly free not to receive from the cup at Communion. If you are afraid of getting the u don’t approach the cup. It goes without

saying that no one who is ill or has any symptoms of a cold or u should approach the cup to receive Holy Communion and no Eucharistic

Minister should serve in that capacity if they have any symptoms. It has always been our understanding that, should you have concerns about

getting the u or if you should have any symptoms of the u or a cold, you should wash your hands repeatedly and at the sign of peace simply

greet the person without offering your hand. No one will be offended, in fact, they will probably be grateful. It is called a sign of peace for a

reason and any gesture or kind word or wave which conveys our best wishes is appropriate. It’s always good to reinforce these good practices.

From Fr. Robert’s and the Friars’ Agenda Last Week.

•Met with Georgia Power representatives regarding the condition and energy eciency of our HVAC systems on campus. We have two

air-conditioning units in the school that are 34 years old. I guess we got our money’s worth.

•Met with the Finance Council to review parish +nances. We try to do this every month and I receive a report every Friday on both the +nances

of the school and the parish.

•Signed the check for the last payment on the friary renovation (Paid in Full).

•Met with presidents of our Parish Council, Finance Council and our School Board regarding our beautiful school.

•Met several times with Ronie Collins, the president of our beautiful school.

•Participated in an online meeting of the Franciscan Finance Commission.

•Met with members of the Capital Campaign Committee regarding remaining projects and our +nancial standing.

•Met with Travis, our facilities manager, several times regarding the doors in the church building, the air conditioners in the school, the

emergency lights in the church itself, the replacement of the stairs in the Outreach Center and the drainage on our football/soccer/baseball

+eld.

•Reviewed the Parish Scholarship policy with our parish staff.

•Spoke with Katie Byers regarding simple changes to our Outreach building that are needed and requested to enhance the safety of our staff

and volunteers.

•Had two meetings with local public safety ocials and our Parish Safety Committee regarding developing a parish-wide safety plan.

•Met with a wonderful group of new parishioners (10 families) who chose to join St. Anne’s and who very much like what they see. It was a great

meeting and I was very, very encouraged by it.

•Had a great meeting during lunch with some of the members of our Campus Ministry Committee of our school. They are great kids and have

lots of very encouraging ideas.

•Said goodbye to a beautiful family who is moving to Florida because of a change in employment. When we get new families we have a dinner

for them and give them an orientation. We are in the process of developing a little prayer and blessing for families (especially military families)

who move on.

•Began work on the Annual Parish Report to be delivered in February.

•Worked with parish staff to begin to prepare the contribution statements. There has been a small decrease in the number of families

contributing to our parish and a small increase in the average annual amount given.

•Had Mass with Grades PK-4 to 5. I love being with those little ones.

•Began two wedding preparations with couples who were engaged over Christmas. The diamonds still sparkle and they still have “gugu eyes.”

•Last week the friars anointed 7 people who were sick and we went to the hospital and Columbus Hospice 5 times on emergency calls, 3 of

which were for parishioners here at St. Anne. We also had several pastoral meetings with parishioners who wanted to talk to a priest.

It begins! Jesus is doing something new. “He left Nazareth and went

to live in Capernaum by the sea.” Jesus leaves His family, His

profession of carpentry, and everything He has known and loved for

the previous 30 years. He goes because it is time. Something new is

beginning, and Jesus will not begin it alone. “As He was walking by

the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers … He walked along from

there and saw two other brothers.” What does He say to these men?

“Come after Me.” These words are for Peter and Andrew, for James

and for John. They are also for all of us.

“Come after Me.” The adventure of discipleship will be strange, wild,

and unexpected. The Apostles surely didn’t know what they were

getting into. But the invitation is accompanied by a promise. “I will

make you +shers of men,” Jesus tells the +rst Apostles. No more will

their priorities be limited to this particular village, to the square

miles of the Sea of Galilee. Their eyes will be open to the Kingdom of

God, and their priorities will shift.

Most of us will not be called to roam the countryside, but we are

invited to a similar shift of priorities. “Come after Me,” Jesus says.

“At once they left their nets and followed Him.” Drop the nets of what

you’ve demanded your life to be. Drop your self-seeking priorities.

Drop your concept of religion as a Sunday obligation and no more.

Drop your disregard for those outside your immediate social sphere.

Whatever it is that keeps you from seeing as Jesus sees, from

loving as He loves, start to drop it today. Because the Kingdom of

God is waiting for your yes! ©LPi
