• Cues: Intro, Paper, Fieldwork, Reflection• research/facts/quotes• Reminders: look at panel, smile, discuss
the challenges• Number the cards in case you drop them
Eye Contact
Reading speech will result in at least a letter grade taken off score!• Look at panel members’ foreheads if
nervous.• Glance at notecards
Posture• Do not lean on podium• Stand up straight with both feet planted
firmly on the ground• Do not put hands in pockets, play with
hair, wring your hands• Feel free to make gestures, but keep them
minimal• Move, but do not dance around
Citing Your Sources• Any ideas/ facts taken from any source. • If you are quoting someone directly make
sure you say, “And to quote John Brown, President of the American Cancer Association...” and verbally state that the quote is ending by saying “end quote”
• If you don’t know author then you could say, “In the article titled…” or “According to the Web Page called….”
• To quote my mentor, Garrett Calcaterra, “Writing introductions is the hardest part of writing.
VisualsInteract with Visual throughout the speech • Appeal to emotions• Appeal to visual learners• DO NOT put copy of speech on visual
– Specific facts from paper (quotes, statistics, examples)
– Photos from fieldwork– Pictures and graphics– Complex terminology that audience must

accomplished goal
Possible Visuals• PowerPoint• Objects (something that can easily be passed
around the room or large enough for audience to see if you just hold it up)
• Poster Tri-fold, sturdy Board Creative, Clean, and Readable
• Internet connections: YouTube, website, blog
Ladies, make sure your pants are not too tight! They should fall straight down from the hips, NOT hug your curves!
Cropped pants or capri pants are NOT acceptable.
Skirts and dresses should fall to the knee.
Shorter than the knee should be paired with tights so that you are not showing too much skin.
Do not wear shirts that are tight or low cut.
