Over 60 years ago, a small group of artists gathered to study and paint together . The magic vision that was created continues today .

The Art League of Long Island is the oldest and largest non-profit visual arts organization of its kind on Long Island, serving 155 towns and villages year-round . From classes, exhibitions and special events, to a lively arts newsletter and more, the Art League presents a full calendar of courses, programs and activities for artists of all ages and abilities .

The Art League’s growing membership welcomes all artists, individuals and corporations who enjoy art and fine crafts, as well as those who believe in the inestimable worth of the arts in our region . Its outreach efforts have created exhibitions in museums and parks, brightened up banks and schools, encouraged children to express themselves creatively and nurtured artists’ talents with training and shows .

WHEN THE ART LEAGUE was founded over 60 years ago around a kitchen table in Huntington, few of the artists involved would have envisioned the size, scope and facility it is today. One thing that has not changed, though, is that we are still a group of like-minded individuals who want to share the joy of creativity that the visual arts brings. Knowing the Art League is a not-for-profit, people often ask how they can help support it. Here are some ways you can make a difference:

GENERAL DONATIONS: General donations can be made any time on the website, in person, or by mail. In-kind donations of new or gently-used art supplies are appreciated.

STUDIO ART CLASS: Take a weekly art class, weekend workshop, or attend a special event. Bring a friend to one of our monthly Try-Day Night classes, or purchase a gift certificate for someone who enjoys the arts

DONATE TO THE ART LEAGUE’S VETERANS’ PROGRAM: Started in 2017, the purpose of our Veterans’ Program is to bring art to our veterans recovering from PTSD and the aftermath of war. Your donation will help pay the tuition of art classes for many deserving men and women.

DONATIONS IN MEMORY OF A LOVED ONE: Make a donation “in memory of” or “in honor of” a loved one. You can also allow the memory of a loved one to live on through a scholarship in their name. A scholarship becomes a gift of art classes to someone who shows talent and motivation or has financial need.

VOLUNTEERING AND INTERNSHIPS: The Art League often needs volunteers and has college internship positions available at cer-tain times of the year or for special projects.

PLANNED GIVING: A great way to plan your giving to the chari-ties of your choice is by setting up automatic monthly or quar-terly payments directly from your checking account or credit card. Call the office to set up this simple giving plan.

ESTATE PLANNING AND BEQUESTS: Another form of planned giving is the process of anticipating and arranging for the man-agement and disposal of assets, including real estate, securities, liquid assets, vehicles, and other items of value. A well-prepared Estate Plan helps minimize gift, estate, generation-skipping transfer tax, and income tax. (Speak with your estate planning attorney to learn more.).

SUPPORT THE ART LEAGUE

Everyone has a story to tell, what’s yours? The Art League welcomes Peter Josyph, multi-disciplinary artist and profes-sor at LIU Post’s Hutton House Lectures, to lead Playwriting for "Geniuses" (Page 6), a seminar for writers with profes-sional ambitions as well as anyone interested in playwriting as a form of expression or relaxation .

International artist and instructor Keiko Tanabe returns to the Art League with a two-day workshop entitled "Captur-ing Light and Atmosphere in Watercolor” (Page 7) . Keiko’s exquisite plein air watercolor paintings undulate between representational specificity and selective abstraction, display-ing a masterful and poetic understanding of the medium . She imbues landscapes with a light and temperature you can almost feel; an atmosphere you can almost taste . This is a perfect workshop for students with some watercolor experi-ence under their belts who are looking to take their paintings to the next level .

Lucidity (Page 7) makes its debut at the Art League with an exciting fusion of opera and dance . Soprano Danielle Davis and dancer Wendi Weng will transport you to another realm with a unique performance that marries movement and pho-nic artistry .

The Resident Artist Membership will culminate in the opportunity to teach a One-Day Workshop that is open to the general public. This is a one-year membership to the Art League of Long Island that starts on June 1, 2018 and ends on May 30th, 2019.

March 12 • Architectural Sketching while Traveling • Eric Anderson • 182-LEC15This lecture will review opportunities to sketch and reflect while traveling. Eric Anderson, an architect and faculty member in the Architectural Technology program at Farmingdale State College will share his methods and sketches from various trips to New York, Washington, Maine, and Asia. Anderson’s travel sketchbooks will be available for examination.

May 7 • Long Island Architectural Patterns • Eric Anderson • 182-LEC17This lecture will present key patterns that are specific to the Long Island regions. The evolution of architec-tural patterns/style from European settlement to current convention will be presented by Eric Anderson, an architect and faculty mem ber in the Architectural Technology program at Farmingdale State College. The influence of British and Dutch traditions; the influence of pattern books on eighteenth and nineteenth century architecture, the mansions of the Gilded Age, the evolution of the Modern style from Fort Salonga to the beaches and East End, and mass suburban typologies will be reviewed.

June 4 • Andy Warhol: Celebrities and Geniuses • Debbie Wells • 182-LEC18Pop Artist Andy Warhol is one of the iconic artists of our time. This lecture will cover his biography and his career, from his humble beginnings in Pittsburgh to his wild days of the Factory in NYC. Warhol was an enigmatic figure as he surrounded himself with people on society's fringe and the modern art scene. Learn about his techniques and creative philosophies with in-depth discussion of his celebrity portraits and his controversial "Jewish Geniuses" series.

Sept 17 • Wonderful Glass World of Dale Chihuly • Debbie Wells • 182-LEC19American-born Dale Chihuly is an internationally famous glass artist. His unique style of glassblowing is legendary with countless variations of twirling and twisting shapes to emulate flowers, balls and abstract shapes bursting with color. Many of his pieces are lovingly installed amidst nature, including ponds, botan-ical gardens, deserts and other settings. Learn about his life and artistic techniques, as well as an armchair tour of one of his most recent exhibitions at the New York Botanical Gardens.Nov 19 • Trompe-l'oeil: Visual Illusions of the Past and Present • Debbie Wells • 182-LEC20Using the "Fool The Eye" exhibition (Nov 2017-Mar 2018) that I curated at the Nassau County Museum of Art with my Artful Circle partner, Franklin Hill Perrell, as inspiration, I will explain the creative tradi-tion of trompe l'oeil (French for "deceive the eye") in traditional and modern art. Learn how artists can trick the eye through perspective, proportions, shadow, mixed media and unique techniques in painting and sculpture that continue to amaze viewers. Trompe l'oeil is a whimsical form of expression and keeps art-lovers of all levels guessing on how things are made.

THIS WORKSHOP IS DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS who would like to gain a better understanding of methods and techniques that make a watercolor painting full of light and atmosphere. We will cover many topics, but mainly fo-cus on the fundamentals: understanding of tonal values and colors and basic techniques in paint application and brush handling. We will paint different subjects and try different approaches to discover what is most effective in creating the kind of atmosphere we desire. For each painting, referenc-es that demonstrate the importance of a good design and perspective will be provided by the instructor. We will also discuss how to choose a subject, how to edit and simplify a complex scene, etc. Keiko will do several demonstrations. There will be one-on-one guidance and a question-and-an-

swer period each day. A class critique will be conducted at the end of the workshop. All levels are welcome but basic watercolor experience is strongly recommended.

About the Artist:

In 2005, fueled by her love of travel and strong interest in

other cultures, self-taught watercolorist Keiko Tanabe left

her career in international relations to pursue art profes-

sionally. In the same year, she discovered the joy of plein-air

painting. Since then her paintings have been in many jur-

ied exhibitions across America and in Asia and Europe. Her

work has been purchased by private and corporate collectors

from all around the world, and has been published in leading

art magazines in the U.S., Europe and Japan.

A solarplate is a photo-sensitive polymer-coated steel plate. All that is needed to cre-ate an image is sunlight, water, and your imagination! No harsh chemicals or solvents involved. Come join us for this ancient Japanese firing method, incorp-orating American Raku techniques. Raku combines chem istry, fire, and smoke to produce gorgeous colors, lusters and crackles. Students should bring 6-8 even thickness bisqueware pots no larger than 6-8” wide and no taller than 13”. Flat pieces are accept-able, tall and narrow pieces are preferred. Use either Raku clay or stoneware with grog (not sand). Glazing will be done on site the morning of the firing. We are hoping for fair skies but we do have outside covering. Bring a dish to share for lunch. Wear cot-ton clothing, long sleeves, long pants, a hat, covered toed shoes (no sandals). Naked raku is a variation of the raku tech-nique in which a slip is applied to the pot before it is placed in the raku kiln. The slip cracks and breaks apart during the firing and is chipped off after to reveal a blackened crackle pattern. In this hands-on workshop, partakers should bring 6-8 even thickness bisqueware pots. The pots for Raku should be no larger than 6-8” wide and no taller than 13”. Explore the possibilities of glass fusing using dichroic glass, a mar-riage of space age technology and ancient art form. Dichroic glass was originally developed by NASA for use in lenses and lasers. In the 1970’s it was used in art glass and now it is quickly becoming a desirable art form. Techniques include cutting, safety, compat-ibility and design. Emphasis will be on creative expression while using sound methods and techniques. Texture on metal is the focus of this workshop. Students have the option of working with copper or Sterling. The workshop gives an overview of various techniques to acquaint you with each. Acid etching on copper and sterling will be demonstrated. Simple bezel construction for cabochon will be demonstrated, as well as cutting, piercing and soldering for a simple ring shank or pendant. Do you have a jewelry de sign you have always want ed to create but didn‘t know how to do it? It can be done in wax. This course will introduce tra ditional and modern wax carving techniques. All levels are wel come. Students will ex plore manipulating the dif-ferent types of wax and their properties. Demonstrations will teach students how to carve 3D sculptural art forms ranging in scale from jewelry pieces such as earrings or bracelet links to small sculptures for belt buckles or paperweights. Wax allows you the freedom to carve beautiful detailed jewelry pieces that could never be fabricated in metal. Students will create their own original smooth or textured wax model that will then be cast in gold, sterling silver or brass by a commercial caster in NYC. Students work at their own pace. Beginning to advanced artists are welcome. This class will guide students who need to prepare college portfolios. Emphasis will be placed on observational draw-ing - a universal requirement among schools. Work produced will reach beyond typical classroom assignments. Students will be encouraged to experiment in a variety of media and subject mat ter while learning crucial life drawing skills to significantly im prove the quality of their work. Assistance will be offered in writing artist statements and in photographing, selecting, and editing final works. Those who spend at least four months in the class will be offered a recommendation letter. Michelle Palatnik is a Long Island based artist and edu cator. She began drawing from an early age and steadily realized her dream of becoming a fine artist. In 2007 she won a 4-year scholarship to attend NYU where she earned a Bachelor degree in Fine Art. During this time she studied at the Art Students League of New York and was awarded a first

Session 1: Melting Pot • July 9 – 13Illustrate everything that melts. Study a sizzling installation, “Hot with a Chance of a Late Storm”, by Sydney Australia’s Glue Society, and watch Chilean artist Livia Marin’s pottery liquefy and morph into a sea of porcelain puddles. Create an artistic melting pot full of drawings, paintings, sculpture and multi-media.

Session 2: Animal Masquerade • July 16 – 20Study artist Cassius Marcellus Coolidge and design a world full of your favorite animal friends. Switch places and be creative while you illustrate, paint, sculpt or craft a humanly animal adventure. Visit with our favorite fuzzy animal friends during a week of trading places.

Session 3: Mystery Art Ingredient • July 23 – 27Start off your week with a mystery package! Your inspiration for the week will be inside. Study the Hudson River School painters and explore Native American art, textile and pottery. Create a collection of drawings, paintings and sculpture inspired by America’s national treasures. Session 5: Magical Garden • August 6 – 10Imagine your world in a fuzzy, bright and colorful light. Peer through filtered viewfinders for a new view on the world around you. The Art League of Long Island depends on memberships, donations, sponsorships, business and corporate partnerships, tuition, and fund-raising events to sustain the organization for the long term. When you become a member you are support-ing the arts, the artists, and the Art League of Long Island.

The Art League of Long Island is an approved sponsor of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education ( CTLE) of the State of New York Teachers who attend our annual Profes-sional Development Day or take studio art classes may apply for CTLE credits with their school district and/or BOCES. (The Art League is not responsible for qualifying classes to meet the requirements set by the Department of Education.)

NORTHERN STATE PARKWAY:

From East: Take Exit 42 N onto DeForest Road North. The Art League of Long Island is at the corner of DeForest Road and E. Deer Park Road.

From West: Take 42 N. Head north on Deer Park Road (Route 231), under the overpass by Dix Hills Fire House. Follow the right fork in the road onto E. Deer Park Road. The Art League of Long Island is at the corner of DeForest Road.

The Art League reserves the right to change its calen-dar, withdraw or modify courses or substitute instructors when necessary. The Art League reserves the right to require the withdrawal of any student whose behavior is disruptive to the class group. Standards of good behav-ior are expected. The Art League cannot accommodate students with special needs. No visitors allowed in class. All students must be registered. No substitutes may be sent to class.

Makeups: Classes or workshops not held due to bad weather or instructor’s absence will be rescheduled ac-cording to studio availability. There are no refunds due to classes or workshops not held due to bad weather or instructor’s absences. Students who miss classes by their own decision, will not receive a refund or make-up.

Check Policy: If the bank returns a check for insufficient funds, there will be a $20 charge.

Scholarships: The Art League has a limited number of financial assistance scholarships available for children and adults. Applications can be found on the website.

High School and College Credit: Students have received high School and college credit with work done in Art League classes by making arrangements with an advisor at their home institution prior to first class. Art teachers have received in-service credit through arrange-ments with their district prior to first class.

Weather: In the event of inclement weather please check www.artleagueli.org. For weekend classes, discuss cancel-lation policy with instructor. We recommend a phone call system within each class.

Allergies: It is the responsibility of a child’s parent or guardian to inform the Art League, prior to the first class, of any allergies (e.g. peanuts) that would be of concern.
