Hello,

Welcome to the Spring issue of Click Berkshire, promoting trusted services in the local area.

Once the new year comes, I always look forward to Spring time. Warmer, longer days. Beautiful flowers on the way with bright colours, birds chirping and even the trees start to look happier!

As I write this we have snow and who knows what March will bring? But just knowing springtime is round the corner makes me smile.

I would like to remind our readers that clickberkshire.co.uk offers further information for local businesses servicing your area and also provides additional event information on our ‘What’s on’ section. This is updated regularly and is a complementary service for Community, School or Charity events so why not get in touch if you have an event you would like to promote.

If you are assessing your Health and Fitness this year, take a look at the Click Sizzler offers in the magazine. Further offers are available on-line so why not take a look and see if you can grab yourself a special rate!

As always, please remember to quote Click Berkshire when using our advertisers and supporting your local businesses - your feedback is always welcome.

Tree care – All year round work

If you have a tree, or several trees on your property, you will already know that keeping them looking

good requires a lot more than a pair of pruning shears and some gloves.

Tree care is a complicated task, which can be time-consuming, expensive, and potentially dangerous.

There are many considerations to take into account before you wield those shears or chainsaws!

The species of tree and what you want to achieve with the work, dictates when it is best to do the job. If

you weren’t involved in the first planting of a tree you might not even know what species of tree it is.

Some are easy to identify but others might take some investigation. According to the

Woodland Trust, there are 33 species of tree native to the UK, and when you include the

150 or so non-native trees, there is a lot of room for a potential mis-identification!

Getting it wrong could mean work being done at an unsuitable time of year for a particular

species, leaving it open to damage and/or disease.

For expert advice regarding your tree care please contact Clear Cut Gardens for a free, no-

obligation quote.

Based in Wokingham, Clear Cut Gardens is fully insured and provides all forms of tree care

anywhere within a 30-mile radius of the town, further if required. Its team of experts can assist at all

stages in the tree lifecycle, from planning and planting, through the on-going maintenance

tasks, to the safe removal of those trees that are no longer

needed.

THE REVOLUTION IS COMING !

Last year the Chancellor announced the biggest changes to pensions and retirement planning for a generation.

From the 6th

April this year, you will no longer have to use your pension funds to buy an income for life (known as an

“annuity”). If you like you can take the whole fund out and spent it how you want.

There are a number of things that you do need to bear in mind:

1. Depending on how much you take out, you could be faced with a large and unexpected tax bill.

2. You need to understand how much you need as a basic level of income to meet your day to expenses such as food,

utilities and insurance etc.

3. If the basics are covered – how much can you afford to spend on the luxury holidays, the new car, or helping out

your children or grandchildren?

4. The big questions are: HOW LONG WILL I LIVE? WILL I RUN OUT OF MONEY?

The starting point is to sit down and work out a financial plan. Look at your bank statements and see how you spend your

money. Don’t forget that these costs will go up each year with inflation and your income may not match that increase.

Based in Wokingham since 2001, PROFESSIONAL FINANCIAL CENTRE is a firm of independent Chartered Financial planners.

We can help you put together a financial plan which can answer a lot of these questions.

Your plan will help understand what you need to do to be able to live the lifestyle you want without the worry of running out

of money.

Flair home help has been established for 8 years. It is owned and run by myself, Debbie

Stone, and my business partner and close friend Mary Overton. We both have a

background in the Care and Nursing sector and we saw a gap in the market for a

personalised home help service. Our ethos is to promote independence and offer continuity with respect and dignity. Over the next

few months I will be explaining more about our services and how we can help.

Since starting our business we have seen a significant rise in the number of clients joining us that have Dementia. The National

statistics are somewhat daunting; in 2015 more than 830,000 people in the UK are predicted to be affected by Dementia, and around

23 million of the UK population will have a relative or close friend with dementia. We are often the first port of call for families

wanting a little help and support for their loved one. We can help in a number of ways and initially we will visit the family, to assess

wants and needs, to find out about the persons likes/dislikes, what they used to enjoy before “Dementia”, and whether they are they

sociable or would prefer 1 to 1. We can access activities within the community or take our clients out wherever they choose to go. We

can also assist with meal preparation and household tasks. We send the same member of staff on each visit, this really does help to

build a friendly, trusting relationship, and familiarity is the key for our clients who have Dementia. There is nothing better than arriving

at a client’s home and being welcomed by a smile at seeing a friendly face.

We are extremely proud and lucky to have staff that genuinely show care and empathy and like us have a passion for what we do.

For the families and clients who have Dementia it can be a frightening and overwhelming time, but we can make it a little easier. If you

would like more information on how we can help and the services we can provide please contact us.

To sample this and many other dishes, why not book into 'Mary Jane's Soul Kitchen' Supper Club in Wokingham. www.maryjanessoulkitchen.co.uk or book

a private dinner party in your own home with the chef Jo Foster at Thyme In Catering www.thyme-in.co.uk

Method (Serves 4)

White Asparagus is quite different to green asparagus in both

flavour and cooking methods, and we’re not talking about the

floppy insipid white asparagus to be found in a tin. These

beauties are fresh and found mostly in the ‘market place’ area

of Morrisons supermarket (unless you have a great local

greengrocer). These are normally only available in season from

April to June.

Heat up your grill to high. Lay your Parma ham slices in your

grill pan and grill until crispy (like bacon). Set aside.

Put the vinegar in a small pan with the peppercorns and bay

leaf. Reduce the vinegar over a high heat until there is only 1

tbsp left. Strain the peppercorns and the bay leaf from this

reduction.

Put the egg yolks in a food processor with the vinegar

reduction. Gently melt the butter so that the butter solids fall

to the bottom of the saucepan. Turn the food processor on

and slowly pour the butter on to the egg yolks with the motor

still running. The sauce will start to thicken. When only the

butter solids are left, stop. If the sauce is too thick, add a little

hot water. Season to taste with salt and pepper and a little

lemon juice. If you like you can add a drizzle of truffle oil and

whisk in. Yummy!

To prepare the asparagus, you will need to peel the tougher

outer skin off with a potato peeler from just below the head

down to the end. Do not skip this step because the outer skin is

very tough and not nice to eat. Also cut about an inch off the

end. You need a saucepan wide enough to lay the asparagus

down flat. Fill half way with water, add 1 tspn salt, 1 tspn sugar

and 1 tbspn butter. Bring to a boil to melt the butter and

dissolve the salt and sugar. Reduce to a simmer and add the

asparagus. Place a lid on the pan and cook for 8-10 minutes.

Drain and place three asparagus on each plate. Spoon over the

hollandaise sauce and wedge the parma ham in between the

asparagus. Add a few mixed salad leaves and you have a

brilliant light lunch or a perfect starter for a dinner party.

2 tbspn white wine vinegar

2 egg yolks

6 peppercorns

It’s all Over………...

By the time you read this, a lot of you will have broken your

new year resolutions already and have given up making that

change.

So what do you do?

Do you sit there and put up with it saying there’s always next

year, or do you go about getting it going again.

A massive problem is people try to change too much all at

once, make small changes at a time, once you’ve settled into

those changes then do the next one.

Small steps at a time and you are more likely to keep it going

and get to where you want to be.

Stop putting too much pressure on yourself to adhere to it all

the time, if you fall off the wagon once don’t worry about it, as

they say get back on the horse and get going again.

If you want to talk about your health goals and targets then

have a look to the right and give me a bell or drop me an

email, chatting over a coffee about all this is a great way to get

going.

Take care my avid readers and I shall speak to some of you

soon.

The Colour of the Year… By Niki Mossman of the Little Red Dress Image Consultancy

Marsala has been announced as Pantone colour of the year for 2015 – and

we will probably be seeing it all over the shops soon. It’s a rich and earthy red

that will work through the end of Winter and well into the Spring – so it’s a

good investment if it suits you and works with your wardrobe.

It is an elegant colour, but not necessarily easy to wear. At Colour Me

Beautiful, we know how to work colour to everyone’s best advantage. If you

have a soft and muted colouring and favour chic and understated looks, you

will look sophisticated wearing it from head-to-toe. For everyone else, it may be easier to

bring Marsala in as an accent. Wear with taupes and greys to lighten and soften, or with black

for a more dramatic look.

To really know whether Marsala suits you hold it up under your chin – do you look healthy

and a little flushed? Or more like you could do with some sleep? If it really doesn’t suit you

then you can bring it in with accessories – a bracelet, handbag or nail colour will be enough to

show that you are on trend. Marsala shoes work surprisingly well too!

To find out more about your best colours and styles, as well as

how to get your wardrobe ready for the new season, contact

Niki at [email protected], call 07580 066881 or take a

look at www.little-red-dress.co.uk.

Flowers can play a major part in creating the whole look and feel for your wedding and

tying ideas and themes together. Once you have chosen your venue, dress and colour

schemes, begin to collect pictures of colours, flowers, styles and themes that you like.

This will enable your florist to build a real picture of your big day.

Make a list of who and where you would like to have flowers including bouquets,

buttonholes, corsages, ceremony flowers, table arrangements and thank you bouquets.

Book a consultation with your florist where you will discuss your ideas using the pictures

you have collected. Your florist will be able to give advice as to what flowers are in

season and any particular flowers that will compliment your theme. Plan another

visit to the venue to check that the ceremony and table arrangements you have

chosen will compliment the space and colours in the room

- your florist will often be available to come along to

suggest ideas.

Work out timings for when flowers will be required on the

day and confirm all the final details with your florist

“My friends organised a ride with Tally Ho as part of my hen do. The team was helpful and friendly right from the start - they coped with a group of real mixed abilities and made sure we all felt safe and had fun. The horses were lovely and Windsor Great Park is just an amazing place to ride - in fact I enjoyed it so much I've ended up as a regular customer.” N

Berkshire Charity Reports 97% Increase in Reading Confidence Berkshire charity, ABC to Read, has released its annual statistics for 2013/2014, reporting a

remarkable 97% improvement in reading confidence with the primary school children it works with.

The charity also reports an outstanding 99% improvement in general self confidence and a 97%

improvement in children’s attitude towards reading. An impressive 99% of responses recorded that

the children who had benefited from an ABC to Read volunteer mentor showed improvement in

their overall achievement, 57% of whom showed significant improvement.

Importantly, the report also indicates that 98% of the children surveyed, whose communication with adults was

deemed to be an issue, demonstrated an improvement in this area.

The primary school children selected to work with an ABC to Read mentor are identified by the schools as those

children who are struggling with their reading and would benefit most from one-to-one support. Just over 50% of the

children that the charity surveyed are eligible for free school meals.

Marcia Rowlinson, ABC to Read Chief Operating and Development Officer, said: “This is the second consecutive year

of fantastic results and I am very thankful to our volunteer mentors who are key to the success of the youngsters they

work with.”

About ABC to Read

ABC to Read trains and supports volunteers in primary schools across Berkshire, helping hundreds of children each year to enjoy

reading and gain an essential skill for life. The charity has maintained around 100 volunteers working with 300 children each year to

improve their reading skills. The children are chosen by the schools as those in most need of reading support.

The volunteers are selected by the charity and are CRB checked, trained and supported.

ABC to Read is currently campaigning to increase awareness of its work in order to reach more

Berkshire children and is also looking for new schools to join the mentoring scheme.
