and Heritage

Battle of Britain 75th Anniversary 2015

The National Memorial to the Few at Capel-le-Ferne occupies a special place in the hearts and minds of all those who have visited this moving site.

The Wing, an important new visitor centre, is due to be open in time for the 75th anniversary in 2015.

Discover 2000 years of history at Dover Castle, explore the finest Tudor artillery castles in England at Deal and Walmer or relive a Roman soldier’s life at Richborough Roman Fort. White Cliffs Country prides itself on its magnificent heritage.

12 13

The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, 18 June 1815.

1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), hero of the Battle of Waterloo, became Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports in January 1829. He held the post of Lord Warden for 23 years at Walmer Castle and died there on the 14 September 1852 in his campaign chair. His famous wellington boots can be seen at Walmer Castle & Gardens.

Page 8: CLIFFS - stayindover.co.uk

Dover CastleBritain’s spirit of resistance to unwanted invasion over the years is best symbolised by this magnificent Castle. Built in the 1180’s by King Henry II, it is located on top of the famous White Cliffs and overlooks the Channel, with views across to the French coast. You can also see an Anglo Saxon church and Roman lighthouse on the site. As you explore the fascinating Secret Wartime Tunnels located in the cliffs keep your eyes peeled as rumours of a wandering soldier’s ghost are not to be ignored! Down in these tunnels you will also find a dramatic recreation of the Dunkirk evacuation, complete with spectacular projections of swooping Spitfires. Above ground in the Great Tower actors help you re-live the splendour of King Henry II’s royal court.

Deal CastleFor a fascinating day out on the Kent coast look no further. Built by the order of King Henry VIII it is one of the finest Tudor artillery castles in England, and among the earliest and most elaborate of a chain of coastal forts, which also includes Calshot, Camber, Walmer and Pendennis Castles. Today you can explore the whole of the castle, from the storerooms to the first-floor captain’s residence. Walk around the defences and admire the squat, rounded bastions and cannons. If you enjoy cycling, a pleasant cycle path links Deal and Walmer Castles along the beachfront.

Walmer Castle& GardensFrom Henry VIII’s fort to residence of the Lord Warden, Walmer has been home to an incredible range of characters. See the original Wellington boots and stand where the Duke of Wellington died. Explore the magnificent gardens including the broad walk, kitchen garden, and contemporary Queen Mother’s garden.

Richborough Roman FortThe impressive ruins of the Roman Township at Richborough mark the point from which the Romans launched their successful invasion of Britain in 43 AD. Extensive remains of the walls and defensive ditches can be seen and English Heritage hold re-enactments and activity days throughout the year.

14 15

Page 9: CLIFFS - stayindover.co.uk

MuseumsDover Museum is our flagship, showing the history of the town over three floors with special exhibitions and free family activity days throughout the year. You will also find the award winning Bronze Age Boat Gallery exhibiting the oldest known sea-going vessel. This stunning archaeological find is around 3,500 years old - that’s almost as old as Stonehenge!

Also in Dover town centre is the Roman Painted House with extensive murals dating from 200AD. Just outside the town is a Transport Museum plus Crabble Corn Mill where kids can try their hands on mini replica wheels.

Deal’s museums reflect our maritime history. The Timeball Tower, on the seafront, was built as part of a chain of semaphore stations in the fight against smuggling and then later as a very accurate time piece - its ball still drops at precisely 1pm every day. South Foreland Lighthouse, at St Margaret’s, was also used for communications and at the end of the 19th century radio telegraph pioneer Marconi set up a transmission mast here. The National Trust now has a museum and tea room here.

Just up the coast in Sandwich is the Guildhall Museum with many interesting local history exhibits.

English Heritage holds regular historical re-enactments at Dover Castle and Richborough Fort - and, if you can make it a date, visiting in June when the Western Heights has their open weekend is well worth it.

Maritime heritageIt is no surprise that this area has a long maritime history with trade on the water vital to a district edged by the sea. Long before the Royal Navy and car ferries worked their way through the passage between England and France the earliest traders had started to do business as is made evident by the find of the Bronze Age Boat. Sandwich, Deal and Dover were all Cinque Ports helping to man our Navy and in the 18th and 19th century Deal, sheltered by the Goodwin sandbanks, was recorded as the third busiest port in England with shipbuilding yards and provision stores that supported Nelson’s campaigns against Napoleon.

Industrial heritageWhilst the sea has always created employment here the district had other major industries. Coal mining was vital for the area for over a hundred years. Although now all closed the legacy of this is the Fowlmead Country Park where the emotive ‘Statue of the Waiting Miner’ stands at the entrance of the park and serves as a lasting memory to the workforce.

There were eight corn mills and five paper mills harnessing the River Dour and flour was also milled at the Chillenden and Sandwich windmills. Sandwich is open to the public as a museum.

Smuggling!Look out to sea from Deal and you may see the waves swirling over the shallows of Goodwin Sands. Once an area that sheltered the King’s fleet but in the 18th century it also provided cover for the local smuggling activities. In 1745 Admiral Vernon informed the Admiralty that 200 sea-faring people in Deal wereliving from this livelihood. Deal’s old pubs and alleyways still bear witness to those old smuggling days.16 17

COASTALtowns & villages

White Cliffs Country has a long and diverse coastline with a unique collection of very different towns. The busy port of Dover, with its wealth of history and heritage, welcomes millions of visitors each year. Here you can experience exhilarating cliff top walks on the world famous White Cliffs of Dover or discover the 2000 years of history at Dover Castle. Deal, sitting right on the beach, was winner of The Telegraph’s High Street of the Year 2013 and is steeped in maritime history including dramatic smuggling adventures. Then there is Sandwich, where you step back in time to one of the original Cinque Ports. Its unspoilt medieval streets, where there are more half timbered houses than any other streets in England, are just waiting to be explored.

18 19

Page 11: CLIFFS - stayindover.co.uk

DoverPort of Kings and the UK’s Gateway to Europe, Dover greets millions of visitors a year with its iconic White Cliffs and magnificent castle.

These may be its most familiar sights, but why not stay longer and see more?

Not only is Dover a fantastic base from which to explore White Cliffs Country, you can also reach London by fast rail link in just over an hour, or hop over the Channel for a day out in France.

DealDeal is a town of extraordinary character, and nowhere is this more clearly seen than from the end of the pier.

A seafront of historic old buildings, every one a different shape, size and colour, tell a tale in which Nelson, King Henry VIII and Julius Caesar played a part.

More lovely views are offered from the promenade and cycle path, past fishing boats, beach huts and Walmer’s grassy green with its much-loved memorial bandstand.

SandwichIn this picturesque corner of Kent you will find Sandwich. A town that boasts being one of the best preserved medieval towns in England. Its narrow streets of half-timbered houses describe centuries of history, and give it a character unlike any other White Cliffs Country town.

Although they have now stopped charging you a toll to enter this historic town it still runs at a slower pace, as if caught in an idyllic time gone by. Once a major Cinque Port the Great Stour river now meanders four miles before it reaches the sea. Pleasure boats still moor here and if you stay to watch them go by you could catch the swing bridge in operation.

Coastal villagesThis beautiful part of the world has inspired many an artist and writer. A string of coastal villages offer wonderful views and strikingly contrasting character: from clifftop St Margaret’s to Kingsdown with its tranquil, beachy vibe, while Alkham Valley and the White Cliffs are Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

COUNTRYSIDE

If you are looking for unspoilt beauty where you can just escape and enjoy nature in its purest form, visit the unique chalk downlands on top of our iconic White Cliffs. Here you will find the natural fauna and flora of the area combined with unrivalled clifftop views of the English Channel and the French coast. The National Trust White Cliffs and our reserve at Whinless Down in Dover offer a variety of habitats and wildlife unique to the area.

In the 16th century King Henry VIII encouraged the development of many new orchards in Kent - including his favourite cherries that are still grown locally today. The fruit itself is delicious to eat and a visit to White Cliffs Country in spring when the apple and cherry blossom is out is a beautiful experience. Agriculture continues to be vital to Kent’s economy and the different crops mould the look of the landscape as the seasons change.

28 29

Page 16: CLIFFS - stayindover.co.uk

Formal GardensJust as agriculture continued to be vital to Kent’s economy and landscape, many formal and ornamental gardens were also being created by imaginative and enthusiastic landowners. In White Cliffs Country we are proud to have a wonderfully varied selection to offer to visitors. From the beautiful gardens at Walmer Castle through to the exquisite Secret Gardens in Sandwich.

Discover the fascinating and sustainable Pines Garden. This organically managed 6 acre area has a lake, a sensory garden and sustainability trail for children, a grass labyrinth and organic kitchen gardens with over 40 different species of fruit and vegetables. And don’t forget the wonderful tea room selling home made produce – much of it grown in the gardens.

Nestled in the heart of the district is Goodnestone Park. The author Jane Austen was a regular visitor here when her brother lived on the Estate. Covering around 14 acres there are romantic woodland areas, an historic walled garden and spectacular pond and rockery.

In Sandwich you will find the Secret Gardens that are encircled by the old stone town walls - an oasis of serenity just waiting to be explored.

ParksDon’t think the district only has formal gardens where you can relax.

With great views over Dover you will find the town’s Connaught Park which dates back to Victorian times. As well as the main gardens and ornamental pond the more active will find hard and soft tennis courts, a children’s playground and a 5-a-side football pitch.

The public garden at Kearsney Abbey is a relaxing place for families to enjoy picnics, feed the birds and let the children play in the newly refurbished play area – but don’t look for the abbey – there has never been one on the site!

Samphire Hoe is a truly amazing place. It was created from around 5 million cubic metres of chalk dug to make the Channel Tunnel - offering something for everyone with wild flowers, sea angling and walking.

Another new landscape can be found near Deal. Fowlmead Country Park, using land once occupied by our coal mining industry, it has now been reclaimed as a beautiful country park offering walks, mountain-biking and cycling trails, a lake and ponds plus activities such as archery, bushcraft and fossil-collecting – and it’s free to enter.

ChurchesOffering different character and history there are a wealth of churches in White Cliffs Country.

St Mary-the-Virgin in Dover’s town centre with its squat spire rising above a three-tier tower has been a landmark since the Middle Ages.

The curfew bell is still rung every evening from St Peter’s Church in Sandwich, and St Clement’s Church occupies what may be the oldest church site in Sandwich.

St Edmund’s Chapel in Dover is one of the smallest churches in regular use and is the only church in existence that was dedicated to one English saint by another.

KearsneyPARKS

From Mills to Mawsonthe historic Kearsney Parks

Visit Dover’s heritage parks, Kearsney Abbey and Russell Gardens,

in the Alkham Valley, part of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Open year round, so whether you’re looking for a tranquil spot for a summer picnic, or a stroll through the changing colours of autumn,

there’s always something different to see and do.

Admire Thomas Mawson’s Grade II listed Russell Gardens with its magnificent canal pond, Palladian-style pergola bridges and boathouse,

dating from c. 1901. Explore Kearsney Abbey with its informal parkland, boating lakes, specimen trees, and the ruins of a former paper mill.

Not forgetting afternoon tea in the Grade II listed café!
