    SHARE THE BEAUTY OF

    YOUR COMMUNITY

WITH A FRESH AIR CHILD THIS

SUMMERCAPITAL DISTRICT - This summer, share the beauty of your community with a Fresh Air child while enjoy-ing the pure joys of summer in your own backyard! Thou-sands of volunteer host fam-ilies in rural, suburban, and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada open their hearts and homes to New York City children from low-income communities through The Fresh Air Funds Volunteer Host Family pro-gram. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profi t agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. Host families open their homes to children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer away from New York City. Fresh Air children experience sim-ple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass, swimming in a cool lake, and gazing at star-fi lled skies. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often re-discover the beauty of their own communities. For more information on how you can make summer special for a Fresh Air child, contact Ten-niel Hansen at 518-441-4407 or visit The Fresh Air Fund at www.freshair.org.

    GET KIDS EXCITED ABOUT GARDENING

Many adults understand the joy of gardening, but garden-ing can be equally fun for children as well. While some adults may feel that certain children do not have the patience or

perseverance to see plants grow from seeds to adulthood, select-ing plants that are hardy and sprout quickly may be the key to igniting a love of gardening in children.

Choosing seeds that sprout quickly can hold the attention of children who are new to garden-ing. Many different plants fit this bill. Beans, peas, sunflower seeds, and bell pepper seeds are easy to start and germinate quickly. In addition, many leafy vegetables,

such as chard, lettuce, spinach, and mustard, germinate in three to five days. Herbs, such as basil and parsley, also sprout fast. All of these plants are good options for introducing chil-dren to gardening, as each provides quick gratification.

To further interest children, it is a good idea to plant seeds in a way that allows youngsters to monitor the progress of growth. Use a transparent container, such as rinsed-out glass jars and can-isters, to house the plant. Such containers give kids an unob-structed view of the process, during which children can plot the progress of seed germination and easily spot root and stem development. Once the seedlings grow larger, they can be transplanted into different containers.

Many seedlings can sprout with water alone. Children can easily grow new plants from clippings of a mature plant left resting in a shallow cup of water, and seeds may not even need soil to germinate. Kids may have luck sprinkling seeds on a dampened, crumpled-up piece of paper towel. Cotton balls also make a good place to nestle seeds. Either mate-rial will hold on to water, keeping the seeds moist until they sprout. Afterward, the seedlings can be carefully moved into a soil-and-compost mix. The paper towel and the cotton balls will decompose and add to the organic matter already in the soil.

Edible plants often make good choices for children because

kids can reap the rewards of their efforts. Herbs can be sprin-kled onto food, or fruits and vegetables can be grown in containers and then served at mealtime. Kids can show pride in their accomplishments, especially if they have tangible re-sults on the dinner plate.

Children who want to try something different can explore other types of plants. Aquatic plants, or those found at the pet store to grow in aquariums, can be easy to grow. They need little more than a container, fresh water and sunlight. Cacti and other succulents are also fun to explore. These plants are quite hardy in that they can stand up to moderate abuse, such as failure to water frequently enough. The unique appearance of cacti make them interesting focal points for an indoor garden.

A love of gardening thats fostered inside can also be ex-plored outdoors. Set aside a plot of dirt where kids can sow their own seeds and tend to their own gardens. This hobby can help children learn patience and hard work while foster-ing an appreciation of nature.

MAKE A PLAN FOR GARAGE ORGANIZATION

Spring cleaning plans are on the minds of many once the weather warms up. Many homeowners feel a sense of re-newal in the spring, when the desire to clean house and get organized becomes a priority.

Garages are often targets for homeowners hoping to target clutter. Once a space reserved for cars, garages are no longer strictly for vehicles, used instead to store items that simply do not fit inside the home or a backyard shed. Organizing the garage is typically a weekend or several-day project. Heres how to turn a garage from a cluttered mess into a space suit-ed for storing items of all shapes and sizes.

    * Enlist a helper. Organizing a garage is a significant under-taking that is best tackled with two or more people. Enlist a helper to make the project less intimidating.

    * Decide what is important to keep. Start the organization

process by clearing out the garage and taking inven-tory of what you have. Items that have not been used for several years can likely be tossed. Make a pile of what

will be kept and then put the rest at the curb or donate use-ful items to charity.

    * Give thought to where you want to store particular items. Tools and items that are used more often should be stored within reach or where easily visible, while items that are not used as frequently can be stored higher up. Think about how you operate in the garage. Recycling bins can be stored clos-er to the door into the home, while bicycles and skates can be nearer to the garage door for easy access.

    * Group like items together. Categorize items that will be kept. Garden tools, camping gear, sporting equipment, and automotive supplies should be categorized and stored in their own areas of the garage, determining if certain items can be stored inside the home to free up garage space. Grouping items together will make them easier to locate in the garage.

    * Move boxed items into clear storage containers. Its much

easier to see what you have when it is stored in clear contain-ers. Some containers are interlocking or stackable, making it much more convenient to store items vertically and free up more floor space.

    * Invest in vertical storage systems. Moving items from the floor and putting them on shelving or behind cabinets can make the garage more organized. Hooks and bins also can be used. Employ a peg board full of hooks for oft-used tools or other items you need at the ready.

    * Leave space for hobby and work areas. Garages are where many improvement projects begin or where hobbies, such as woodworking or crafting, take place. Leave space for these tasks and hobbies.

    * Give the space a fresh coat of paint. Some garages are dingy and dark. Bright paint on the walls and floor can open up the space and, when combined with more lighting, can make it lighter and brighter.

Garage organization is a common spring cleaning project. But it shouldnt be reserved for this season alone. Periodic checks of the garage and straightening up can keep a garage clean and organized throughout the entire year and make yearly spring cleaning much more manageable.

FAST FACTS ABOUT GRASSthe resale value of a prop-erty.

Frequent watering, proper fertilization, pest manage-ment, and mowing are all

essential components of lawn maintenance. But there is more to those beautiful blades of grass than just aes-thetic appeal. The following are some interesting facts

about grass that even the most devoted lawn enthu-siasts might be surprised to learn.

    * Grass is defi ned as any plant of the family Gramine-ae, a group of vascular plants that grow across the globe.

    * There are as many as 10,000 varieties of grass in the world. These range from grass to rice to wheat to bamboo.

    * Many grasses are annual or perennial herbs with fi brous roots and rhizomes.

    * Grass can withstand many diff erent climates and has been discovered at the North Pole and at the equa-tor.

    * Twenty percent of Earths vegetation is comprised of grass.

    * Grasses have been trans-formed into paper and home decor items. Bamboo, which is a type of grass, is frequent-ly used for fl ooring because it is durable and sustainable.

    * Grass is mostly comprised of water, which makes up about 80 percent of grass and 90 percent of grass clip-pings.

    * A typical lawn will have about six grass plants per

square inch. Some lawns may have millions of grass plants.

    * The average lawn releases enough oxygen to sustain four families of four.

SPRUCE UP YOUR HOME THIS SUMMER FOR UNDER $100

(StatePoint) Looking for an easy and inexpensive way to re-fresh your home this summer? With a little inspiration and work you can give your home a quick makeover within a lim-ited budget.

From interior dcor projects to a fresh coat of paint, there

are plenty of ways to make a big impact in a room for under $100, says Carmen De La Paz, 3M spokesperson and former host of HGTVs Hammer Heads.

With that in mind, De La Paz, an interior designer and DIY ex-pert, has some tips to help inspire project ideas:

Refurbishing a home can be expensive and tiring. Dontreplace perfectly good furniture when there is no need. In-stead, consider refreshing a tired chair, table or coat rack with a coat of paint.

Makeabigimpactbypaintinganaccentwallinyourhome.Consider using complementary color to the palette of the space. Whether you want to enhance the size of a room, draw attention to a new furniture piece or just add a little fl air, an accent wall is a simple way to make it happen.

Paint a fresh design element like a pattern or a stripe tochange the look of a room. You dont need to turn to a pro-

fessional service for sharp, crisp paint lines. With a high quality painters tape, such as the new Scotch-Blue Painter`s Tape with Ad-vanced Edge-Lock Paint Line Protector, you can get super sharp paint lines. This tape provides edge-to-edge pro-tection for improved paint bleed performance.

SpiceupyourroomwithaDIYwallartproject, suchasthisone from the Nesting Place blog.

First, tape off rectangles with high-quality painters tape. The shapes can be varying sizes and shapes to create an interest-ing wall eff ect. Apply your creativity to have the shapes fi ll your wall space.

Remember, there are no rules, so at this point, get experi-mental and tape a design that looks appealing to you.

After taping, choose a single paint color and trace the paint-ers tape. For a bolder eff ect, pick two complementary colors and alternate tracing the rectangle shapes. Alternating colors will achieve a brighter, bolder look. Take into consideration what the room will be used for as that can help set the tone for the pattern and colors.

Also be sure to let the paint dry enough so that its dry to touch before carefully removing it.

Feeling inspired? Channel that creativity this summer by sub-mitting your own home refresh project for under $100 and you could win $5,000 to put towards a home makeover. Visit www.ScotchBlue.com/homecontest to enter the Home of ScotchBlue Painters Tape contest by July 15, 2014 or learn more, and see offi cial rules.

You dont need an enormous budget or a professional. With a bit of inspiration and the right tools, you can refresh any humdrum space in an afternoon.
