DID YOU KNOW? Many homeowners prefer thelook and durability of realhardwood flooring. It can beexciting to install new flooring, and you may be anxious tostart transforming a room. Butbefore diving right in, it's nec-essary to acclimate woodflooring to a home. Otherwise, you may end up with buckledwood or other problems. Hard-wood flooring needs to sit inthe room where it will be in-stalled for anywhere betweenfive and 10 days or in adher-ence to the manufacturer rec-ommendations. This gives thenew flooring time to adjust tothe humidity level and temper-ature of the home. Naturalwood shrinks and expandsdue to temperature fluctua-tions, which is why it is essen-tial to match the conditions inthe home before working withthe flooring. The boards canbe acclimated in the boxes(with the ends opened) or out-side of the boxes.

SMELLY FIREPLACE?After a long season of use, fireplaces need to be cleaned. Manyhomeowners think this is a job that can be put off until the fall, but spring is an ideal season to have the chimney and fluecleaned and inspected. One reason to include scrubbing thechimney as part of spring cleaning is to cut down on odor. Afterusing a fireplace, a buildup of creosote forms in the chimney. Asthe weather gets warmer, creosote deposits can start to smellsour and that odor will seep into the home. In addition, moisturecan mix with the creosote and start to degrade the flue liner, ne-cessitating costly repairs. The sooner a chimney and flue arecleaned the better. A chimney sweep can do a thorough job ofscrubbing down the chimney and fireplace and ensuring thateverything will be in working order come next season.

HOME TIPIf there is a custom tile or specific design that you really like that is not within your budget for theentire kitchen or bathroom, think about using it as an accent instead. Rely on less expensive tilesfor much of the room, then sprinkle in the accent tiles for the style you want. The finished projectwill look high-end, but you will likely have stayed within your budget. You also can save money byshopping at a reuse center or one that sells remnants and leftover materials from larger jobs. Forexample, it's possible to find a piece of marble or granite that would fit perfectly as a countertop ina bathroom.

DID YOU KNOW?Landscape fabrics are used to prevent weed growth while still al-lowing air, oxygen and water to flow to and from the soil. Land-scape fabrics are a chemical-free way to prevent weed growth, endearing them to eco-friendly homeowners. Landscape fabrics, once laid, also are a far less labor-intensive method to preventweed growth, as they can be effective for several years, duringwhich homeowners can expect to perform little or no mainte-nance. In addition, many homeowners prefer landscape fabricsbecause they can help the soil effectively maintain moisture dur-ing dry periods, when gardens might otherwise be highly suscep-tible to drought. Once put down, landscape fabric can be coveredwith mulch to add aesthetic appeal.
