Selecting The Right Roofing Shingles

(NAPSI)—When the time comes for a new roof, todayʼs homeowners can be on top of the sit-uation. Whether building a new home or remodeling, selecting the right roofing involves morethan aesthetics and cost. Factors such as building codes, climate and how long you intend tostay in the home can affect decisions about material, weather-impact resistance, warranty andsolar reflective capability. The good news is there are now more roofing shingle options thanever before and curb appeal doesnʼt have to take a backseat to functionality.

Hereʼs a look at a few:• Strip shingles—the original, the most basic and most lightweight of roofing shingles-are singlelayered and generally designed to look like slate. Inexpensive and with a flat appearance onthe roof line, strip shingles used to be the most popular shingle. Today, with significant advancesin technology and consumer sophistication, strip shingles are primarily used by contractorsbuilding economy-priced homes or are purchased by homeowners for small repairs on homesthat already have strip-shingle roofs.• Dimensional shingles, or architectural laminated shingles, are now the predominant roofingshingles installed in North America. Manufactured as dual or multilayered, a dimensional shingleprovides a thicker and richer appearance, with various shades and mixtures of colors and tones.A big plus for homeowners concerned about color, these shingles can be closely matched tocomplement exterior siding, trim and doors. Dimensional roofing shingles are also typically heav-ier than strip roofing shingles, can be made with a higher impact resistance and are offered withimproved warranty protections—from 30 years to lifetime.• Premium shingles are laminated shingles, unlike traditional roofing shingles. Designs maymimic “old-world” roofing shingles, such as natural slate or shake shingles. These are a greatchoice for historical homes representing classic traditional architectural styles. For example,CertainTeedʼs Grand Manor provides enhanced aesthetic appeal. Premium roofing shinglesalso usually provide impact resistance or solar reflectivity, which can extend roof life and lowerenergy costs. CertainTeedʼs Landmark Solaris is a premium roofing shingle that offers solar re-flectivity, improving your homeʼs energy efficiency without sacrificing color choice. To find a contractor nearby, visit www.certainteed.com or call (800) 233-8990.

Ducts Done Right(NAPSI)—The next time youʼreconsidering getting yourhomeʼs heating and coolingducts cleaned, consider this: Alittle caution can protect youfrom companies that try toscam you. You just have tomake sure youʼre dealing witha legitimate cleaning service. The nonprofit National Air DuctCleaners Association(NADCA) and “Dateline NBC”recently exposed some com-panies that use bait and switchtactics to take advantage ofconsumers. Executive DirectorJohn Schulte said, “Thesescams are a problem for con-sumers and legitimate busi-nesses. Low prices offered bybad actors make it difficult forconsumers to know what to ex-pect, while luring businessaway from legitimate compa-nies.”He recommends:• Beware of lowball ads thatoffer “whole house” cleaningfor less then $100. This is usu-ally indicative of a classic baitand switch tactic.• Have the ductwork, coils andall components cleaned, andmake sure the companyagrees to do the work in accor-dance with NADCA standards.• Be sure this is all docu-mented on the bill of sale.• For more information and tofind a certified NADCA mem-ber, visit www.nadca.com.

SUMMER OCCURRENCESIt finally happened! Yvonne fell in the pool. No, she didnʼt dive in,jump in, or wade in. She fell off the side in, with glasses on, hear-ing aid in, hairdo in place and dressed. As luck would have it, Ididnʼt happen to be around to witness this electrifying event butarrived on the scene shortly after. She was busy vacuuming thepool and reached in to fish something out, lost her balance ismy guess, and in she went. Iʼm sorry to say that I missed theepochal incident but came in time to see the results. GentleReaders, she was one bedraggled spectacle. But she took it instride and laughed it off, glad that no one had witnessed her per-formance.

I think she was trying to emulate her daughterʼs early summerfall in the pool. But at that time the pool cover was still on. Thecover is taut like a trampoline, and the water was still cold anddirty. She tripped over something and fell backwards down onthe cover which allowed water to come up through and she hadto crawl out on hands and knees to get back out, soakedthrough. Luckily, her performance was not witnessed, either, much to her relief. She went home, changed her clothes, cameback down to finish the weeding chore and promptly did it again!I think my ladies like the water. But they arenʼt going to like memuch for tattling on them.In spite of that, I do like to keep my readers informed of the go-ings-on down on Oak Street. If you donʼt hear it from me, youʼllhear it from some other source. I would be remiss if I didnʼt re-gale you with the facts as they are rather than some distortedversion of the truth. Yvonne accuses me of not always stickingto the facts but, Gentle Readers, you know I wouldnʼt do that.

At any rate, we are back to normal and Yvonne is none theworse for the experience. Her very expensive hearing aid stillworks, scraped knee is healed, her hairdo is restored and Iʼll betsheʼll be more careful from now on.

In the meantime, my tomato plants are coming on like gang-busters. Yvonne says she wishes people would come and buythem so she doesnʼt have to deal with them. She is already tiredof it. She has made spaghetti sauce for the freezer and canssome almost daily to keep up. The tomatoes are especially tastythis year too. Every member of my gardening family is reportingthe same thing. This is quite different than two years ago whenthat awful blight hit everyone and we didnʼt get enough tomatoesto put up a single jar. Hopefully, that was a devastating eventthat wonʼt occur again in the foreseeable future. What a blessing a productive garden can be. I grow the ingredi-ents for the process and Yvonne does the rest. What is tastierthan a B.L.T. with tomatoes from your own garden? Just buy thebacon, the rest is in the garden. Besides that, where would I beif I wasnʼt tending a garden? It is my life, my passion! Yes, I dooverdo it but something just drives me to do it. Believe me, thereare lots worse things to overdo.Yvonne surprised me the other day with a strawberry-rhubarb

pie. Yes, we still have rhubarb in the garden and Yvonne foundsome strawberries on sale last week at Aldiʼs. That adds up topie! That woman can make a pie just like my Mother did all thoseyears ago. My Mother could cook and I was brought up on goodhome cooking. I married just the girl to continue the tradition. The trouble is, pies donʼt last long around here. The first thing Ido with a new pie is to cut a piece and hide it. Itʼs the only wayIʼm guaranteed to get a piece. I swear those kids can smell onea mile away.

Good food plays such a big part in the cohesive structures offamily life. There is nothing like a family sitting down together fora well prepared meal. As luck would have it, I was blessed witha Mom who could cook with the angels and then a wife whostepped up and filled her shoes. I am indeed a lucky man.

Your friend, Russ Melville

Opportunities Abound at Thurman Fall Farm TourOrganizers of the 2011 Thurman Fall Farm Tour (or “TFFT” astheyʼve come to abbreviate it), say that the Columbus Day Week-end (Oct. 8-9) event has been expanded to include nearly twentydifferent sites and activities all over their little mountain town. Therewill be farms to visit, demonstrations, shopping, sampling, gospelconcert, garden walks and woods talks. See horses in action asthey draw logs or participate in training sessions. Ride theSaratoga and North Creek Railway in a special TFFT “hop”(passes available only at the tour sites), have your blood pressurechecked, see an art and rustic furniture gallery and a remote artstudio, learn how to raise Christmas trees, and take in a barndance. But wait,” as they say, “thereʼs more!”Wini Martin, event chair, says there are four activities for whichwould-be participants from around the region may sign up. • Quilt show organizer Avis Russell is looking for a fewmore Thurman quilts, newly made or vintage, to exhibit at townhall. Contact her - 623-9921 or [email protected] .• The craft show at The Glen Lodge B&B still has someopenings for regional crafters. Find applications online or by con-tacting Wini Martin, [email protected] or 623-9595, orpick up one in Thurman Town Hall entryway.• The home show still has room for a few more area busi-nesses and not for profit organizations to set up a table to publicizethe goods and services they offer. Applications available from samesources as crafter applications.• Adirondack Authorsʼ Fair, to be held at TFFT only Sat-urday, Oct. 8 from 1-3 p.m., at Athol Community Church, invitesregional authors to contact Perky Granger,[email protected] or 623-9305 to participate.Detailed Thurman Fall Farm Tour information may be seen onlineby Googling the event name, or by going directly to www.persis-granger.com/Thurman_Fall_Farm_Tour.htm. PRESERVATION PROGRAM IN WARRENSBURGLike many communities, Warrensburg has lost a number of its

historically important buildings. The recent fire that gutted a for-mer antique and furniture store on River Street, the coal pocketon Mill Street, and damaged three adjacent businesses has sad-dened many Warrensburg residents.  It has also damaged thelocal economy and destroyed tangible ties to the townʼs industrialpast. So it is timely that a program on the need for, and benefitsof, historical preservation will be co-sponsored by the WarrenCounty Historical Society and the Warrensburgh Historical Soci-ety.On Wednesday, September 21st at 7:00 p.m., Steven Engelhart,

Director of Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) will pres-ent “Historic Preservation = Successful Communities” at the Ma-sonic Hall in Warrensburg.  This program is a general introductionto understanding the importance of preserving our nationʼs builtenvironment.  Using illustrations from all over the easternseaboard and from the Adirondack region including Warrensburg,it begins by exploring the many reasons that individuals, busi-nesses, non-profit organizations and governments are increas-ingly involved in promoting historic preservation. These examplesinclude the ways in which historic architecture and historic preser-vation offer us a higher quality of space, are our most tangiblelinks to our past, foster community and national identity, con-tribute to community revitalization and help us conserve energy. The second part of the program will focus on the urgency to ad-dress future losses of historic buildings, and provide needed toolsso communities can set standards to protect their historic re-sources for future generations. This program is one in a series presented throughout Warren

County by the Warren County Historical Society.  It is free andopen to the public, and handicapped accessible.  Light refresh-ments will be served following the program.
