DID YOU KNOW? Valentine's Day is a popular time of the year to send greeting cards. According to theGreeting Card Association, around 145 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged an-nually. While that is an impressive number, Valentine's Day actually comes in secondas the most popular card-giving occasion. Christmas tops the list with some 1.6 billioncards purchased, including boxed card varieties. Other popular occasions to send greet-ing cards include Mother's Day, Father's Day, graduation, Easter, Halloween, Thanks-giving, and St. Patrick's Day.

Papercrafting for Valentine's DayMillions of cards are exchanged each Valentine's Day, which, ac-cording to the Greeting Card Association, is the second mostpopular holiday to exchange cards, trailing only Christmas. While thousands of greeting cards perfectly express personalsentiments, many individuals still prefer to craft their own person-alized valentines. Papercrafting creates something unique andworthy of saving. An art form in which paper is used to createthree-dimensional objects, such as models or sculptures, paper-crafting's most widely known manifestation is origami, in whichpaper is folded and manipulated into various forms. Papercraft

also can be used to make pop-up cards and other elaborate cre-ations. Papercrafting can be enjoyable and challenging and generallyrequires a good eye for design. But computer software programsand templates exist to make papercrafting a more viable optionfor those without a flare for design. One of the advantages to papercrafting is it tends to be inexpen-sive. All a person needs is paper, a creative idea, a cutting tool, and an adhesive. Various projects can be created to make heartsculptures, homemade paper gift boxes, cupids, cards, andthree-dimensional flowers ideal for Valentine's Day. Web siteslike pepakuracorner.blogspot.com, www.papercraftsquare.comor kelleighratzlaff.com are great resources for prospective paper-crafters.Craft stores such as Michaels, A.C. Moore and Hobby Lobby alsomay offer tutorials on how to design and build various paper-crafts. Visit a local store and inquire about classes. Such storesalso may have books on papercrafting that often come with tem-plates to help beginners get started. Books worth investigatinginclude "Paper + Craft: 25 Charming Gifts, Accents, and Acces-sories to Make from Paper," by Minhee and Truman Cho; "PaperMade!: 101 Exceptional Projects to Make Out of EverydayPaper," by Kayte Terry; and "Decorating with Papercraft: 25 Freshand Eco-Friendly Projects for the Home," by Clare Youngs.Papercrafting allows men, women and children to put personaltouches on crafty Valentine's Day projects.

DID YOU KNOW?Approximately 110 million roses, mostly red, will be soldand delivered in three days surrounding Valentine's Day.The reason red roses are so popular is because they werethe favorite flowers of Juno, the Roman goddess of love. There are nearly 900 acres of greenhouse dedicated tothe production of fresh-cut roses in the United States. Oneacre of greenhouse rose production in the United Statesis valued at about one million dollars, which includes thevalue of the plants, greenhouse structure and land. Al-though California grows 60 percent of the roses in theUnited States, the majority of those bought for Valentine'sday will have been shipped from South America.

Protecting Your High-Mileage Vehicle(NAPSI)—These days, many drivers are finding ways to keep their vehicles on the roadlonger. Having an odometer that reads 100,000 miles or more need not mean the vehicleis on its last legs. It may just mean you should stick to a regular maintenance scheduleand take advantage of automotive products that help extend the life of the vehicle. These tips can help:• Use the right gas. Unless your manufacturerʼs manual says the vehicle requires a high-octane gasoline, it will probably run with no problems on regular unleaded. The differencein price can be as much as 30 cents a gallon. Your money is better spent on maintenancethan at the pump.

• Cut down warm-ups and eliminate excessive idling. Oldercars may need to warm up briefly, but letting it idle for a longtime before you put it in drive is not better. In fact, a vehiclejust sitting there can suffer stress on the components andburns fuel less efficiently.

• Get motor oil designed for high mileage. If there are over75,000 miles on the odometer, consider a formula designedfor high-mileage engines, such as Royal Purpleʼs HMX oil.In addition to proprietary additive technology, it contains ad-

ditives to reduce internal wear and condition engine seals.

Itʼs a common misconception about vehicles with high mileage that you should not usesynthetic motor oil because it will remove deposits and restrict oil flow. In fact, one ofthe benefits of using high-mileage synthetic oil such as HMX is that the detergents inthe additives in the product clean out the deposits in the engine. Maintaining cleanlinesswill promote the longevity of the engine.

• Tender Loving Care. If your vehicle needs repairs, address them as needed and donʼtlet them go until you find yourself stranded. These small steps can ensure that youʼll beable to enjoy your vehicle for many more miles to come.

• Learn more. You can find further facts and tips online at www.royalpurple.com.

Managing Native Seed Sources as a Critical Natural ResourceGLENS FALLS - Seed collection isnʼt a new science; it has been going on since ancient times. But why is it so important today? Native seeds provide many benefits to wildlife and the nativeecosystem for diversity. Native plants offer many positive aspects to the local flora and faunafor food and cover - seeds, nuts, fruits, nectar, and as a host plant for many species. For ex-ample, ash trees alone offer a habitat for about 150 native Lepidoptera (butterfly and mothspecies), and 44 arthropod (insects and spiders) that solely need ash trees for survival.Speaker: Edward Toth, Director Greenbelt Native Plant Center, and the Director of Mid-AtlanticRegional Seed Bank (MARS-B), will present information on conservation and use of ecotypicseed as well as a bit of history and science behind the benefits of using local /native geno-types.This program is being cosponsored by New York Forest Owners Association, South-eastern Adirondack Chapter; Cornell Cooperative Extension, and Capital/ MohawkPartnership for Invasive Species Management (PRISM). This program is free and open tothe public, at Crandall Library, Community Room in Glens Falls on February 1, 2014 at 2 p.m.For further information please contact, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County at518-885-8995.
