Senator Farley Reminds Bicyclists of theRules of the Road

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I - Schenectady) recentlyenjoyed a bicycling tour with his family and would like to take thisopportunity to remind constituents of the importance of bikesafety.

"I've seen many people enjoying the local trails such as FultonCounty's FJ&G Bike-Hike Trail, Schenectady County's Mohawk-Hudson Bike Hike Trail and the Town of Ballston's Veterans' Me-morial Bike Path," Senator Farley said. "Whether you want toexplore trails in one of our region's parks or ride in your ownneighborhood, safety is something to always consider."

New York State requires children under the age of 14 to wearprotective head gear when riding bikes, in-line skates, skate-boards or non-motorized scooters. The law is referred to as the“Bicycle Helmet Law” and itʼs aimed at protecting children fromsustaining head injuries in bicycle accidents — injuries that canoften be serious and sometimes fatal. In the case of an accident, helmets will bear much of the impact and protect the skull andbrain from the trauma that could result from a dangerous fall orcollision.

Senator Farley has free brochures on bicycle safety and helmetuse and they are available through his office by calling 455-2181(Albany), 885-1829 (Ballston Spa), 762-3733 (Johnstown) or toll-free at (800) 224-5201.

COURTHOUSE GALLERY: Ariana Kolins and Russell Serrianne

July 12 -  August 15, 2014Opening Reception: Saturday, July 12th, 4 - 6 PM,

This event is FREE and open to the public.Ariana Kolins uses the ceramic pinching technique to createboth functional and sculptural work. She says: “Touch is para-mount for my artistic expression. The care that goes into pinch-ing clay--a slow, simple, process-oriented technique, one that isrudimentary and yet sophisticated, is similar to the care ofbuilding and maintaining relationships.”  Her work further ex-plores how individual forms are transformed, either through in-teracting within groups, or by standing alone. “For me my formsof clay are as individuals, interacting with themselves, eachother and the greater whole- the community. “Russell Serrianne uses the natural lines formed by vine tendrilsto create his intricate three dimensional drawings.  Individualvines are carefully selected by shape, thickness and size. Apiece may contain anywhere from 75 to 1,700 vine tendrils. Hesays: “I am captivated by the energized line naturally found inthe strength and determination of the vine tendril. In my work Iuse the vine tendril as my drawing tool, as my mark, as 3- di-mensional line. I reinvent the appearance of the tendril's thinbark with burnishing techniques such as steel wool rubbing andwith coatings of clear shellac, creating a mark that appears tobe fabricated; mechanically twisted, metalized and disassoci-ated from its natural intent and yet true in its organic state-ment.”This exhibition is funded in part by Hacker Boat Company, Inc.,Glens Falls National Bank, and the New York State Council onthe Arts, a state agency. The Courthouse Gallery hours duringexhibitions are Tuesday through Friday 12 – 5 pm, Saturday 12– 4 pm, and all other times by appointment. The CourthouseGallery is located at the side entrance of the Old County Court-house, corner of Canada and Lower Amherst Streets, LakeGeorge, NY.

Senator Farley Encourages ReadingDuring Summer Months

As Chairman of the Senateʼs Select Committee on Libraries,State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C, I – Schenectady), helpedkick off the New York State Libraryʼs Summer Reading Programtoday at the Schenectady County Public Library. Called “Fizz!Boom! Read!,” the program is being launched by over a thousandpublic libraries across the State, giving children the opportunityto access the vast resources of New Yorkʼs public libraries to sup-port their summer reading.

“Libraries are wonderful resources for families and I encourageeveryone to visit their library this summer,” said Senator Farley.“The State Summer Reading Program is a great way for studentsto enjoy their summer while also improving their reading andcomprehension skills. Many libraries also offer special programsand events that are both fun and educational. Please support andvisit your local library this summer – youʼll be glad you did!”

Senator Farley is also promoting this summer reading program, and will send a congratulatory certificate to all students who sub-mit a completed journal. For more information, or to obtain a jour-nal, call Senator Farley at 455-2181 or email him [email protected] Several schools in Senator Farleyʼs district have already obtainedhis journals and are distributing them to children. Through participating in summer reading programs, children canreceive reading lists and participate in activities at their local li-braries. At the end of the program, participants receive formalrecognition for their reading achievement. According to New York State Library officials, 1.74 million youngpeople statewide participated in last yearʼs summer reading pro-gram. It is the expressed hope of program coordinators at theNew York State Library, Assembly and Senate that increased at-tention to the benefits of summer reading will result in expandedparticipation. Tips For Dealing With Kittyʼs Potty Problems(NAPSI)—“Why is my kitty going outside the litter box?” is one ofthe top questions that veterinarians get asked by cat parents.According to Dr. Laura Wiles, a veterinarian who specializes infeline medicine, it might be a health issue, behavioral problem orthe catʼs environment.Dr. Wiles advises cat parents to first take kitty to their vet to ruleout any health problems. For behavioral and environmental is-sues, Dr. Wiles offers some tips to help make kittyʼs trips to thelitter box less stressful:• Place the litter box in a location thatʼs best for kitty-not you. Catsprefer that their litter box be in a quiet, easy-to-access locationthat offers them some privacy-not a high-traffic or noisy area.• Keep the litter box clean. Sift the litter regularly to keep it fresh.Wash the litter box every time you do a complete change of litter, using mild soap and water or an enzymatic cleaner (not bleach).• Have multiple litter boxes if you have multiple cats. The goldstandard is one litter box per cat, plus one extra. Make suretheyʼre big enough, too.• Find out if your cat prefers covered or uncovered litter boxes. Ifyour cat with issues has a box with a cover, try uncovering it as atest.• Use a litter that kitty likes. Choose a cat litter such as the newSimple Solution 30 day Super Absorbent Litter, made from atta-pulgite clay, that stays fresh and clean for up to a month. Catsespecially like it because its soft texture is gentle on their paws. Finally, if you have indoor cats, help them get rid of excess energyand stop them from getting bored by playing with them during theday. For more information, visit www.30daycatlitter.com.

Buying A Once-Wrecked Car(NAPSI)—When it comes to used cars, safety is no accident. But an accident should-nʼt keep you from buying a used car you love.In fact, you may drive away with a bargain. The ProblemThere are plenty of previously damaged carsout there. In the U.S., car crashes happenabout every 60 seconds—and one in six used cars being sold has been in an accident. The key is to know what youʼre buying. An AnswerYou can start your used car search at the new Carfax.com. Every car for sale comeswith a free Carfax Report that includes any reported accidents. Itʼll help you tell thingslike how severe the accident was, what areas of the car were damaged and if the airbags deployed. Next, get a mechanic to help you determine if the car was repaired prop-erly.Following these steps can help you find a swan where others see only an ugly duckling.Learn MoreYou can get more information and shop for great used cars at the new www.carfax.com.
