Artist bio So many bellies of ravenous creatures must be looked after, garments bought, thieving hands guarded against and services employed in the face of tears and curses. How much happier is the woman who owes nothing to anybody except the one she can most easily refuse, herself. (Seneca the Younger) I try to keep something like faith that I'm making my work from a deep place inside me. And that it is benevolent toward me. I am not attracted to work that aims to pervert the truth. I aim for my work to be naked. I want to make images that would be both useful in daily life and address the female condition. I am attracted to images which display feminine power and vulnerability. I draw animals and humans to symbolize the attributes we take on as humans to construct our identity. I think about the relationship between natural and constructed worlds; how they are different creatures. I am not seeking to venerate my subjects - I am trying to reveal their truths. Where modern art tends to glorify things, I tend to show their reality. I hope this will benefit my (and others') sense of self.

Art description A soft sculpture made early 2011 and inspired by the miserable wet weather Queensland had to endure. The use of recycled tyre inner tubes conjures up feelings of mildew and black floral growths that start to appear when the water subsides and leaves behind our familiar spaces transformed into a new and damp alien world.

Artist bio Having over 25 years' experience within the fashion industry, various studies in design, pattern making, garment production and a keen interest in textile arts have led Erica to her passion for sculpture, in particular soft sculpture. Erica's work has been exhibited in prestigious events such as The Swell Sculpture Festival, Spare Parts 2010 and the Duke Gold Coast Art Prize - displaying a variety of both indoor & outdoor sculpture. Erica lives and works on the Gold Coast, QLD.

Art description Trace is defined as visible mark, such as a footprint, made or left by the passage of a person, animal, or thing or evidence or an indication of the former presence or existence of something. We all impact on our world in different ways when we are gone all that remains is a trace of who we were. Our aim would be that our trace is individual and positive.

Artist bio Deborah Nicholls is a Brisbane based artist who is currently completing a Bachelor of Fine Art at Griffith University. She creates and exhibits paintings, collages and sculptural artworks in various styles. Her work is continually evolving, incorporating new technology as well as contemporary and traditional media. Currently works are centred on the notion of our existence and how this complex notion might be expressed through art making.

Artist: Ann Copp Title: Transitory Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 54cm x 100cm

Art description Based on visual assumptions we characterise and box what we see. Our first impressions of a stranger is based on the visual, with the majority of us living in cities we live and work in close proximity to one another but do we really know each other do we stop and take the time to connect with the people that surround us. My paintings capture the atmosphere of city life and the people who occupy them. Through light, movement, and distortion I have captured glimpses of the unseen personalities, which we pass by on the street. My work is a portrayal of movement, the illusions of motion and light depicting transparent distorted images, thus creating an almost abstract composition of reality which is unseen with the naked eye, captured in a matrix of time and space, while exploring modern life's transitory nature, chaotic movement and the fusion of the people in our city.

Artist bio Born in Brisbane, grew up not realising my true vocation, my early studies led to a certificate of Merit in Business training in 1988. Ten years later my passion for creativity took control and I set off in a new direction. In 1999 I studied Interior Decoration obtaining a Certificate IV in Design Services at TAFE Brisbane. The following year I moved to the Gold Coast and continued my studies at Griffith University, graduating in 2002 with a Bachelor of Design Studies, double Major in (Three Dimensional Design & Visual Culture). In 2004 I completed a course in Flash Animation at Gold Coast Institute of TAFE. I am currently in my final year at Griffith University Queensland College of Art Brisbane, 2011 Candidate, Bachelor of Fine Art, Painting Major. It has been a long road but finally I have found my true calling.

Art description A simple mixed media painting, from a body of work that uses images from popular culture in various states of waste and decay. The piece deals with both loss and renewal on a personal level while highlighting broader issues of waste and consumption in society.

Artist bio Magee grew up in Brisbane, Australia and is an active member in the cities long standing graffiti and street art scene. His vibrant walls can be found on streets and abandoned buildings across Australia, Europe and the US. He has exhibited in cities across Australia and has previously been selected for the churchie, Lethbridge and prometheus art prizes. Artist: Patricia Linehan Title: Pond Medium: Oil on Curtain Fabric Size: 76.5 x 102cm

Art description Much of my work is based on the figure and portraiture. Recently, the intention of my work has been to capture the freedom experienced by children which often seems unattainable to adults. In Pond I have depicted a young girl bathed in sunlight, peering into the water below the stepping stones on which she stands. The water itself is undefined and vague, a space to be filled by the child's imagination. There is no limit to what she could see beneath the water. Pond has been painted on curtain fabric, the pattern of which can be seen faintly through the sheen of the paint. The patterned fabric is reminiscent of the home and the confines of domestic life and the everyday environments we surround ourselves with. Here, this environment and its limitations are juxtaposed with the infinite possibilities of the child's imagination.

Artist bio I completed a Bachelor of Art (Visual) at the ANU Canberra School of Art in 2004, where I specialised in Painting and Sculpture. I moved to Brisbane in 2006. I lived in France in 2007 and have spent some time travelling which has greatly influenced and informed my work to date. In 2008 I completed a Graduate Diploma of Education and I am currently teaching Visual Art to Students at a local secondary college.

Art description My work is about honesty and making passing moments permanent by capturing them in paint. This is very much a self portrait- this is what I do (painting) and where (at home) and in my pyjamas as I usually am. My dog is also a very important aspect of my life, and also he does literally sit with me as I paint.

Art description Liminal Space 2 explores my ongoing interest in the phenomena of glass in the urban environment and its reflective qualities as a perceptual experience. In contemporary architecture, sheet glass has become a predominant material used in the construction of the urban environment and has varying effects on the way that we experience the space around us. The reflectivity of the material lends itself to a constant and poetic dialogue with its surroundings. The complex relationships, of layered images on reflective surfaces, have compelled me to seek a more detailed account of this phenomenon. Making known the relationships between the static, moving, compressed, obliquely angled, abstract, and sequential is my aim.

Artist bio I graduated from South Australian School of Art, the University of South Australia in 2008. During this time I developed an interest in investigating the effect of reflection in glass in the urban landscape. My work was selected for inclusion as a finalist for the international Bullseye E-Merge competition in 2008 and in 2009; my work entitled Within/Without was selected for the international peer reviewed journal, New Glass Review. After graduating from the South Australian School of Art I relocated to Canberra to undertake Honours at the Australian National University. I graduated with First Class Honours and was awarded the 2010 Canberra Glassworks Residency Award, which I will undertake in the latter part of this year. Currently, I am developing my emerging art practice as a studio hirer in the Canberra Glassworks.

Artist bio Born and raised in China. Lisa's passion and aptitude for art was evident at an early age. Her formal art training commenced at secondary school and continued through university. In 2000 Lisa graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Shanghai. In 2002, Lisa left China went to New Zealand to open a new chapter in her life. During her time there, she developed further as an artist and became a respected art teacher. In early 2007, Lisa moved to Australia . She is now a full-time artist and frames her own work- believing that the frame is an integral part of the work that should support and enhance the work's central theme.

Art description My work explores the phenomena of glass and its reflective qualities relative to the contemporary urban experience. Sheet glass is a predominant material in the urban environment and has varying effects on the way we experience the space around us. My recent practice has involved observing, recording and exploring space through the reflections from sheet glass held in buildings in public city areas. I have investigated these spaces through photography, capturing moments of time and translated them into layered structures of sheet glass, fused glass and mixed media, which reference a series of entries and exits in and across time and space. Glass in architecture is very present in our modern-day lives, but rarely thought about or explored as a vehicle for transience or impermanence of time and space. The ghostly interplay of these structures echoes the transitory nature of life and relationships and the ephemera of the everyday.

Artist: Kate Vassallo Title: One hour in a gallery Medium: Inkjet Print on poster paper Size: 169cm x 135 cm

Art description This image is documentation from a series of performances entitled 'One-Hour Studio'. In these performances we see the body of the artist occupying different spaces as artist studios. In this work the artist inhabits an empty 'white-cube' gallery. The body is dormant in the vast space, alluding to the mind activating while the space is still. This is a large, unframed, photographic print ideally hung with archival tabs and pinned to the wall.

Artist bio Kate Vassallo graduated from the Australian National University School of Art in 2010, with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours), First Class with University Medal. She has had her first solo exhibition in Canberra and exhibited in numerous group shows, most recently HATCHED 2011: National Graduate Exhibition, held annually at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art. Vassallo's work attempts to find ways of preserving the tangible experience of making. She undertakes a deconstruction of Performance Documentation, attempting to find a medium with which ephemeral moments can be adequately represented once they have passed. Her work is playful while she questions the conventions surrounding what makes an object art and the person that makes it an artist.

Art description 'Blackhead' is part of a series exploring the breakdown of Polaroid film emulsion using oil paint on board as the medium. The work is a metaphor for bodily decay.

Artist bio Ben Mitchell is a Perth based artist working in 2d and 3d forms. He is a graduate of Edith Cowan University where he was an Honours student in 2005. Since then he has exhibited in Lecce Italy at Primopiano Gallery as well as shown works at the Fremantle Arts Centre, Spectrum Gallery, Central Institute of Technology and Kurb Galleries in Perth, Western Australia.

Artist:Richard Hammer Title: Sesquipedalium Medium: Stainless Steel, Sheoak Size: 600H, 500W, 500D, (mm)

Art description Sesquipedalium is a kinetic work that responds chaotically to movement of air. It makes visual the variability of the atmosphere in which we live. The interaction between the atmosphere and everything else comes alive. It awakens our sense of wonder at ordinary everyday air. Busy lives pause to gaze at something different. Near an open window on a windy day it moves continually. Nearby doors opening and closing will shift it. At some sites it's just still.

Artist bio Richard Hammer CV (ARTS) Interests My first interest was chaotic, kinetic, wind-driven sculpture. I like the live, unpredictable, almost-interactive aspects. I'm now branching out, exploring other concepts and ideas, including doing some sculpture units at TAFE with Tony Jones. Recent Exhibitor, Bassendean's Sandy Beach Sculpture Park Exhibition, WA, March 2010 and March 2011. Exhibitor, Castaways, Rockingham, WA, May 2009, May 2010 and May 2011. Exhibitor, Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe, March 2008. A small work was exhibited at the inside exhibition, and a large one outside. I designed and fabricated both. Exhibitor, Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi, November 2005. The piece was snapped up by a retired architect who rings me a couple times a year to tell me how much he enjoys it. Exhibitor, other exhibitions in WA. Late 1970's, early 1980's During this time I produced a number of works of computer art, one of which won the inaugural Australian Computer Art Prize (1979). I was also a featured artist in the Spring Festival of Arts, Fremantle Arts Centre (1982). Various drawings were sold to private collectors, and the Australian Computer Society commissioned a drawing which was presented to Sir Charles Court as he opened the annual convention. Education My degrees include a B.A., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Mathematics. In undergraduate art class I made nonsense machines from wood, that actually worked. Inspirations Alexander Calder, George Rickey, Robert Klippel, Jean Tinguely.

Artist bio Biography Susan Coral Radaich (nee Simmons) was born in the mining town of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. Her father and grandfathers were all miners that worked in the Goldfields. Reminiscing upon her childhood memories of exploring old mine diggings, family picnics in the bush and walks amongst the Australian landscape, Susan expresses in her work a visual diary. It is a journey for you to experience the changes in the natural landscape of the region to the commencement of corporate mining. Through sculptural layering, her paintings express beautiful open-pits and slips. Washes of colour and fine brush markings create depth and atmosphere. Texture and colour display the energetic surfaces of the harsh Australian terrain which is rendered with rich colours that delivers a contemporary finish. It is there from her memories that she has developed as an emerging visual artist specializing in the life of mining in the Goldfields. I hope the individual viewer experiences the strong qualities of her works at an emotional level. Her Future aspirations are to continue in the same direction painting in the remote regions of Western Australia. She successfully completed a Diploma in Fine Arts at the Claremont School of Arts in 1983. Living and working in the City of Cockburn (South of Fremantle), Susan is much involved in a local art society and its biannual Exhibitions, she has hosted solo Exhibitions at the Mining Hall of Fame in Kalgoorlie and the Memorial Hall, Hamilton Hill. Artist: Judy RogersTitle: Rob Diptych Medium: Mixed Media on Board Size: 90x45cm

Art description Robert Cleworth is my friend. He has recently moved away to New South Wales and I was quite devastated to lose him as a good friend, mentor and colleague. I wanted to keep him around a bit longer; this is why I made his portrait. I visited him in Newcastle and the sitting for the portrait took place on his balcony in the morning sunshine after a night of family dinner, running around after kids and conversation. I used the triptych format to emphasize some of Rob's personal qualities and bring out his dynamic character. He is, under a very private persona, a warm end engaging man with a good sense of humour.

Artist bio Judy Rogers was born in Hungary, moved to Perth in 1995. She works in the blend(er) gallery, Joondalup as a curator and has an artist studio in the Tresillian Art Centre in Nedlands. She has participated in more than 120 solo and group exhibitions in Western Australia, Victoria and Queensland. She has worked on major public art commissions and she has received considerable recognition and awards. Art description This work is a representation of my marriage. The white shirt is the institution and the hands represent the dynamics of the relationship. The fabric is sometimes gently drawn to cover and protect and sometimes violently pulled when it becomes suffocating. The bodies are intertwined and joined; they are merging together as one body.

Art description I love koi for their beauty and friendly nature. I want to show the enthusiasm of the koi pond at feeding time, the whirling bodies, the sound of gulping mouths and the whole beautiful dance of life. My first zoological triumph was to put together a carp skeleton after a Christmas dinner, aged 9. I have been hooked since then.

I live and work in the most remote capital city in the world, Perth, Australia. This remote city with an unforgiving climate inspires great creativity. Cliftons Art Prize 2011Adelaide Finalists

Art description I painted this work, in March this year. It was a photograph i took of my dog down at the beach earlier in the year which i loved and would work well as a painting. I used Water mixable oils and applied them with a palette knife to the mdf board in a very thick, gestural way.

Artist bio My name is Liz, I am eighteen years old, and currently studying visual arts at UniSA where i plan to specialise in painting next semester when we start our specialisation. I also work part time at Target, which i love. With the money i earn form work, i try to save some, spend some on social activities and the rest helps me to purchase all the paints and other materials needed for uni - i'm finding oil paint very expensive!!. I have always loved art, especially painting. In high school I studyed Art, Carft and Design-the three art subjects which were offered until year twelve when i could only do Visual Arts Studies because of restricted subjects. I achieved a 20/20 for my practical work in year twelve, and a 17/20 overall. My second year twelve major (a large oil painting of the slums in buenos aires) was selected to be apart of the SACE art show, which made me very proud! I also won the school art prize for 'excellence' in 2009 (year twelve). Whilst at the moment, i am happy living the 'poor uni student life', i hope to travel the world when i finish studying. I particularly love London and Paris and can not wait to travel there. I love life and try to live it to the full, which i think comes through in some of my works which could be seen as 'happy snaps'. At the moment i am working on a series of paintings for uni, based on 'life' but more specifically, the 'teenaged life'. This is made up of a range of images that portray life, and memories.

Art description This photograph is part of my graduating folio, a series entitled "Mod Cons". It is about the way we as humans seem to have a deep drive to make things more convenient for ourselves, but in this quest we have ultimately created a poisonous lifestyle. Most of what we consume is laden with toxic ingredients and chemicals, yet we choose to stay ignorant of this in pursuit of short term gratification. The subjects in the series are all using items or products of convenience, and are unaware that they are releasing the toxins from their bodies. In this image the subject is driving a car, and the green condensation on the window represents her breathing out the toxic fumes.

Artist bio Rebecca Kammer is currently finishing her Bachelor of Visual Art and Design (Photography) and working as a Creative Assistant for an online clothing boutique. She recently participated in a Masterclass with world renowned art photographer Gregory Crewdson at Adelaide College of the Arts and is now working on a new body of conceptual artwork which she intends to exhibit in late 2011 or 2012. Her artwork explores themes relating to how the modern world affects us as people, in both our relationships and our physical existence. Lives and works in Adelaide, South Australia.

Art description This piece is part of a series which looks at the way we as humans are becoming increasingly disconnected from our natural environment, through urbanisation and ignorant exploitation. The figure walks lost through a forest, unable to see or feel anything, wrapped in newspaper - a product we exploit that very environment to create. To connect with the landscape again the figure must shed the wrapping, which will eventually breakdown and become one with the land.

Artist bio Tom Buchanan is an Australian painter residing in Adelaide, South Australia. In 2010 Buchanan graduated from the South Australian School of Art, University of South Australia, with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honors) degree, specializing in Painting. Currently Buchanan is developing new works in oils and producing moving images. His practice is based in Adelaide with a strong influence of the built environment. This year Buchanan has been engaging audiences in new dynamic works in oil's, charcoal, moving images films and community art projects. Buchanan has been exhibited at a number of galleries within Australia. Exhibiting consistently throughout Adelaide and has exhibited in Melbourne, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania, N.S.W and Darwin. He has lectured drawing workshops in SA and VIC 2005 -'10. In 2002 he was the winning painting for the 'Eden Valley Riesling' label for Peter Lehmann wines 2002. In 2007 Buchanan was a finalist for the Metro 5 gallery painting award, The Advertiser 2007 Contemporary Art Awards and The Stan + Maureen Duke Art Prize QLD in the Gold Coast Art Gallery. The widespread adoption of different versions of no-fault divorce by most states after 1970 transformed marriage and family. The traditional presumption in favor of the permanence of marriage (with certain well-defined exceptions) gave way to a situation in which one of the partners, for whatever reason, could unilaterally end the marriage. This marked a cultural shift from regarding marriage as a truly fundamental social institution to regarding it as primarily a personal union in which there is a very limited social interest.

Artist bio KRISTIAN T MUMFORD b.1980 Born in country South Australia, Mumford is third generation Australian artist and son of Jenni Mumford, astronomer, gardener and painter. At the age of 14, he decided that art was going to be his chosen profession. Kristian was fortunate to study informally with Jenni Mumford and Scottish grandfather Gerry Hough OAM. Much of what Kristian paints or makes relates to the beauty he loves of a persons inner most being. His paintings a cease searching and revelation of forces benign. A versatile painter, Mumford's artistic output includes landscapes and one or two still lifes, however he feels especially compelled to paint the most classical of artistic subjects, the human figure. Art description My practice is based on several interests and influences. These include the relationship between man and nature, expressing psychological 'inscapes' through landscape imagery, exploring the relationship between realism and abstraction with paint, and investigating an Eastern treatment of space through the removal of a fixed ground. Inflection represents the shifting and temporary nature of our own memories and dreams, as well as our perceptions of the world we live in. The drifting quality of the work points out the necessity of both flexibility and conviction in the way we approach life- some things need to be held on to, others need to be let go of.

She is currently completing her third and final year of study at Unitec in doing a Bachelor of Design and Visual Arts, majoring in Visual Arts. She is also involved in leading a visual arts team at her local church. In addition she has been involved in school makeovers in the Auckland community, and the donation of paintings to Ronald McDonald House, a division of Starship Hospital. Her paintings mainly consist of oil and acrylic, with a dominant focus on elements of both landscape and abstraction.

Artist bio Julian Mckinnon is a visual artist from Wellington, New Zealand. He first studied visual art in 2000, and has been developing his art practice, exhibiting, and participating in international events since. He has also travelled extensively in India, the United States, and Europe to learn more about the rich artistic cultures of East and West. His primary field of artistic enquiry is painting based abstraction. "To me the art making process is a dialogue between the myself and the materials. I cannot dictate the work; I have to negotiate with the material, and allow for unexpected occurrences. I improvise rather than preparing sketches, so the work evolves on the painted surface. The final outcome is not foreseeable from the beginning of the process. My paintings involve a delicate balance of pattern, structure, and organic order, against unruliness, rawness, and chaos. These opposing dynamics are what gives the work its visual substance."

Artist: Kathryn Stevens Title: Vault Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 1800mm x 1500mm

Art description Informed by a combination of painting theory architecture and engineering, Kathryn Stevens' work explores the twin painterly ideals of depth and palette. Stevens' work investigates the representation of depth through an implied three-dimensional structure on a two-dimensional plane. The paintings also explore the effect of variation in the tonal range of a colour on the structure present on the canvas. The result is work that emits a rhythmic, quasi-electric energy, underpinned by a sense of mathematical precision. Inspired in part by the immediacy of architectural and urban spaces in the modern environment and the interaction between surface and structure in modern glass-and-steel construction, Stevens' earlier works explored the limits of three-dimensional space with rectilinear division. With the introduction of curved line and the use of tonal blocks of colour to suggest depth and to further energise the composition, Stevens' later works warp this limited space and lend fluidity to her expression of three-dimensional structure.

Artist bio Artist: Kathryn Stevens was born in the King Country town of Te Kuiti in 1965 and lived there until 1983 when she moved to Auckland to study civil engineering. In 1996, having worked in the film and television industry as a makeup artist for ten years, Stevens again enrolled at University and graduated from the elam school of fine arts in 1999 with a BFA in painting. Since then Stevens has exhibited regularly in Auckland and Christchurch and has been a finalist in the Wallace art awards, the BMW art awards and the Waikato art awards. In her painting Stevens is interested in the way that space and depth can be suggested, and are perceived. Stevens painting, though abstract, suggests construction grids, walls, windows, or paved floors. In each of the paintings Stevens sets up a different possibility of space and depth using the linear grid and the colour that it lies in

Art description In my current body of work I aim to create a tension between the beauty of the piece and what it represents. I understand that we don't generally think of viruses as beautiful, but viewed objectively they are exquisite and unique. Brown Infection was created to initiate discussion about the global impact of a viral epidemic and how media distortion can affect people on a local level. If we don't want our communities to become a casualty, there are some important questions we need to ask ourselves. From what sources do we trust information about what is dangerous? What checks are placed upon these sources? How do we redefine our own circumstances when hearing of epidemics in media? Do we cease to become part of a community because of perceived threats to our well-being? I think that isolationist ideas have the ability to spread through communities like viruses and can be damaging on a number of levels. Acknowledging that there can be more genetic variation in a family group of chimpanzees than the entire human population; how different are we really? Is the human genome so homogenous that we face real danger from a viral epidemic? Or does the real threat come from our voluntary isolation and lack of empathy?

Artist bio Isla has been making things since she was a child and has vivid memories of her seven-year-old self, enameling copper coins with a blowtorch. She now makes contemporary glass jewellery and artworks from her garden studio in Auckland, New Zealand. Glass is both subject and object in Isla's work and its chemical and physical properties fascinate her. It is fluid whilst unyielding, delicate whilst impenetrable. Glass can transform from liquid to solid in an instant, while still retaining the illusion of movement. Isla's process consists of making finely crafted glass beads, melted with a torch according to traditional Italian methods. Although the techniques she uses are ancient, their application is contemporary and she is constantly experimenting with the nature and chemistry of glass. She says "Lampworking is an ancient and magical process, a chemistry that borders on alchemy and as an artist find its lure irresistible." In her current body of work, Isla explores the relationship between the virus and its host community. Creating a tension between the artworks beauty and what it represents, Isla presents a thoughtful view of the world we live in.

Art description This painting is an illustration of energy, that incorporates the virtues of abstract expression. The Title 'Strange Attractor' alludes to chaos theory, and the notion of certain uncertainty. It's also a reference to my new style of expression and my overall passion to be a painter. To be drawn in a new direction is strange, inspiration itself is a type of strange attractor. The desire to be an artist regardless of the craft is unexplainable to many. The aim of my art is to create an awareness of uncertainty, patterns, fluidity, simplicity and the notion of embracing change, A challenge with charm. My aim has always been to provide joy though visually pleasing works and simplicity is a great vehicle for delivering that motive.

Artist bio Born in 1976, I grew up on a small farm in the rural community of Waimauku in the western outskirts of Auckland. I expressed a strong passion for art from an early age and was a prolific painter throughout my education. After finishing my Bachelor of Arts degree, I worked in the film and television industry for ten years both in the UK and New Zealand. Strong connections were still maintained to other art mediums throughout this time. After extensive travel through Europe, the Middle East and Asia I returned to New Zealand. My experiences abroad created a renewed focus towards my art. Over the following years I have redirected my energy towards painting. Artist: Chris Dennis Title: Albatorss Hunting Medium: Acrylic and Mixed Media on Panel Size: 61cm x 76cm Art description My paintings are perhaps best described as 'Narrative expressionism' or 'internalized portraiture'. The juxtaposition of a static figure (often possessing the head of either a fish or a bird) in an active setting hints at the internal, through the depiction of the external. The stories behind these 'Therianthropic' pieces are deliberately ambiguous. The incongruity yet immediacy of the imagery fuel the viewer's preconceptions. They invite the witness to create their own narrative and bring to mind facets or emotions that maybe more difficult to confront if not disguised behind a mask.

Artist bio Prior to his fine art career, Chris Dennis was admitted to Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design to study natural history illustration. This classical training is evident in his current therianthropic work. After completing his BA (Hons) at the University of Wolverhampton he relocated to the United States, and in 2000 earned his MFA from the University of Art in San Francisco. Chris has exhibited in cities across the United States, Europe and New Zealand, including San Francisco, New Orleans, London, Berlin and Auckland. He lives in Auckland.

The intention of this work was to speak of our spiritual connection to the land, time passing and personal reflection This painting really took on a life of its own and the result is one of mystery and contemplation.

Artist bio Jane Blackmore has been painting for twenty years and was born in Rotorua New Zealand in 1973. She has recently celebrated the first year anniversary of her Gallery and Studio, Blackmore Jean Gallery and Studio, Shelly Bay Wellington. Jane was awarded first prize in the New Zealand National Women's Art Exhibition in 2007 and continues to gain critical acclaim for her artwork. Aural, alliterative pairings and sequences are transformed to visual forms by laboured textual rendering. The act of writing lines as a punishment is given a new purpose - the words form intertwined threads, flowing into the shapes of imaginary knots that loop on infinitely. Ford takes Escher's famous trefoil knot as a starting point and moves onto to more complex, theoretical knotted shapes. There is a metaphorical tying of the tongue and a visual tying of the knot.

Artist bio Andrew committed to photography over 25 years ago. From courses at Ilam Fine Art School at Canterbury University and Christchurch Polytechnic, there have been exhibitions and commercial work commissions interspersed with personal practice and a wide interest in all visual art media. More recently he has tutored in digital photography at the National College of Design and Technology and at Massey University Fine Arts School. His work features the frequent use of bold colour and strong compositions. Landscapes and urban abstractions have become a consistent theme as well as environmental portraiture and mixed media work, combining traditional and digital photography with sculpture and other fine art techniques to create a hybridization of 20th Century work inspired by the cubist and surrealist movements. In 2006 an unusual black and white shot from a wedding was entered in the New Zealand National Library Documentary Photographic competition. The print was declared winner and the prize money was spent on yet more photographic equipment. Eventually digital raised its game and was worthy of investing in. A move to a full digital setup in the last two years was realized. The latest technologies for scanning, ink jet printing and Internet storage and display have been investigated and forms the future of Andrew's work going forward. But traditional photography is not ignored. Medium and large format cameras have been retained and are still used for personal and commercial work.

Or is it inevitable? collected some hair from my friends and used them in my artwork to symbolize the uniqueness of everybody.

Artist bio Tina Lam ATCL(piano) ATCL(violin) BA(hons)(CUHK) MA(CSM) Tina Lam was born in Hong Kong in 1984. She was trained to be a musician since she was 6, learning violin and piano. She was subsequently awarded two ATCL degrees by the Trinity College of Music in London at the age 19, for her proficiency in violin and piano performance. During her high school years, her aptitude in fine arts manifested in acrylic painting which her works were recognised among practitioners that she was awarded numerous prizes including the South China Morning Post: Student Artist of the Year 2004 - the most prestigious award to student artist in Hong Kong. In her studies in Chinese University of Hong Kong, where she was awarded the Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2008, she continued to explore her interest in acrylic but also were exposed in a variety of media, including ceramics which she was obsessed in. In the succeeding year, she further her studies in Central Saint Martins, where she studied with Sally O'Reilly and Alex Landrum. Enlightened by them, she researched and encountered dream, trauma, memories, and their forms in arts. Her recent works were inspired and was developed based on these investigations and was revealed on a spectrum of mixed medias including pencil colour on paper, dye transferred print on carved wood and Polaroid. Her arts had been popular among galleries and was constantly exhibited. Between 2006 - 2009, her works were featured in 10 group or solo exhibitions in Hong Kong and London. In January 2010, her collection was selected by at myartspace as online feature artist for the season. More recently, she was selected as Finalist in Red Mansion Art Prize and Mishcon De Reva Art Prize. Tina currently works and resides in London and Hong Kong.

Art description I often walk around slowly inside the video game world until noticing a beautiful landscape scenery, then I will start painting it. Numbers of people have asked me this question, 'Why don't you just paint the "real" landscape rather than this fictitious space?' My answer is that the paintings I done are about the world more realistic than the "real" one. Today, we can easily find people playing with their portable video games when they are on train or on the road. I can judge that those people would get closer with the natural area in video game's world than the one which our bodies can touch with. And although people who play the video games can go through many places in it, their mind of participation in game are bound by the original game rules, thus it is passive in nature. What I am now doing is to set up my own game rule inside the fictitious world. I prefer choosing action games, such as car racing games which require the player to drive fast to compete with others, I will just drive slowly and look for pretty scenery, my works ' Toril', 'Sunflower" and 'The lake' are painted with this rule.

Art description in January 2010 I was invited to participated a group show which featured 32 artists from Hong Kong and Guangzhou. The group show was a part of a festival which stressed the importance of cultural exchange between 2 cities. Failing to know most of the artists of the list and willing to stop myself from embarrassment on the opening night. I started to "google" every artists background, yet all these "research" became the medium of my work. I used the information I found from the internet to design the name cards for every artists on the show. Half of the name cards I produced were used to create a collage work with a hallow Chinese character of "hey" ("hello" equivalent for Southern Chinese) in the middle. The other half of the name cards were given to each exhibiting artists during the opening night as gifts.

Artist bio Damon TONG obtained his BA (Fine Arts) from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) / The Art School, Hong Kong Arts Centre in 2008 with a major in painting. He served as exhibition co-ordinator for "White Tube" of Hong Kong Art School between 2005 and 2009. On the same year at 2009 he and his friend together established "Rental United", a collective which focuses on collaborative experimentation. He focuses on connections between segmentation and domestic objects through repetitive arrangement of paintings.

Art description A road / passage is defined by the daily behavior and habit of human being, on the other hand, the human existence transcends the merely geographic location and transforms it from "place" into "space". Michel de Certeau first creates the term "Narrative action", which relates to the human behavior that can generate stories. He claims that is a practice of organizing and developing space effectively, in the sense that it rephrases the "place" in a particular time frame and makes it relational. In the past thirty years, the Hong Kong government has been pruning over 300 roads in the record of Highways department, the official reason is large scale construction projects, including domestic housing and commercial buildings. The post-colonial city planning forces the "space" to push away history, as a result, stories are lost, and consequently human behavior is restrained by the stereotype of metropolitan city. "The Lost Roads" is a series of photographs, in which I document the lost roads sites, and present the relationship between the missing and existing stories. The non-durable quality of the photographs enhances the idea of this piece as a city monument.

Artist bio Born and raised in Hong Kong, Lee was graduated in BA Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is fascinated by the relationship of time, space and human beings. His recent photography project, The Lost Roads, is about the physical, social and contextual transformation of space, and he further investigate how local inhabitants react to the gradual change of the post-colonial government policy. The sequence of his project work involves scrupulous planning, research and execution, and yet he does not reject randomness and chance encounter throughout the art making process. He is currently working on mockumentary project, Unwelcome Visitors, which is about the history of his home and some unseen visitors that he has been living with him since he was born.

Art description I paint the damaged, derelict, doomed & disappeared. Through my art I have explored many industrial sites in Sydney that were off limits to the public :Cockatoo Island; Eveleigh Railway Workshops; industrial sites in Pyrmont & Rozelle; the wharves of Barangaroo, Woolloomooloo, Walsh Bay, Glebe Island & White Bay. The astounding rate of Sydney's recent development has both fascinated & repelled me. My challenge is painting to an unknown but inevitable time limit as buildings are demolished as fast as I can paint them. I have an uncanny instinct for selecting subjects that are about to vanish. Ironically the attraction of these places is their poignant impermanence. As a plein air painter, I set up my easel by the side of the road, on windswept rooftops or on demolition sites.The challenges of painting outdoors include distractions from workmen & passers-by, constantly changing light & Sydney's notoriously unpredictable weather. Almost everything that I have painted has either been demolished or changed beyond all recognition: the pubs have been gentrified, working class terraces are replaced by apartment blocks and old warehouses are converted into offices. My paintings show the cycle of abandonment,decay, destruction and renewal of the inner-city landscape - testament to the ending of an era. 'Industrial Cathedral Mortlake', an old gasworks, was a decayed & vandalized relic with a skeletal roof & a crazy zig-zag of buttresses holding up the crumbling walls. For all that it was once a strictly functional industrial building, this building combined the haunting melancholy of a bombed out Gothic cathedral with a whiff of the surrealism of Salvador Dali.

Art description The works "Illuminado" and "Abre Los Ojos" from the series 'Juegos Con Luz Y Espacio' force the viewer to question what is real. Objects and interior spaces, which are ultimately solid and tangible, are deconstructed into fake narratives whereby one negotiates what is or isn't fictional. At first glance what appears to be an image of an interior flooded with sunlight, holds on closer inspection seemingly flat qualities. By photographing three-dimensional models constructed from wood, the complex limits of perception and representation are crossed, toying with ones preconceived notions of what is represented. These works, built and shot in a studio, have become images of sculptures created for the single purpose of being photographed. The works exist in various degrees of being detached from reality, creating an ironic tension between real and fiction. The minimalism of the images lends a particular sterile quality to the interiors, providing a sense of silence and static beauty for the viewer to meditate upon.

Art description The works "Illuminado" and "Abre Los Ojos" from the series 'Juegos Con Luz Y Espacio' force the viewer to question what is real. Objects and interior spaces, which are ultimately solid and tangible, are deconstructed into fake narratives whereby one negotiates what is or isn't fictional. At first glance what appears to be an image of an interior flooded with sunlight, holds on closer inspection seemingly flat qualities. By photographing three-dimensional models constructed from wood, the complex limits of perception and representation are crossed, toying with ones preconceived notions of what is represented. These works, built and shot in a studio, have become images of sculptures created for the single purpose of being photographed. The works exist in various degrees of being detached from reality, creating an ironic tension between real and fiction. The minimalism of the images lends a particular sterile quality to the interiors, providing a sense of silence and static beauty for the viewer to meditate upon.

Art description I paint the damaged, derelict, doomed & disappeared. Through my art I have explored many industrial sites in Sydney that were off limits to the public :Cockatoo Island; Eveleigh Railway Workshops; industrial sites in Pyrmont & Rozelle; the wharves of Barangaroo, Woolloomooloo, Walsh Bay, Glebe Island & White Bay. The astounding rate of Sydney's recent development has both fascinated & repelled me. My challenge is painting to an unknown but inevitable time limit as buildings are demolished as fast as I can paint them. I have an uncanny instinct for selecting subjects that are about to vanish. Ironically the attraction of these places is their poignant impermanence. As a plain air painter, I set up my easel by the side of the road, on windswept rooftops or on demolition sites. The challenges of painting outdoors include distractions from workmen & passers-by, constantly changing light & Sydney's notoriously unpredictable weather. Almost everything that I have painted has either been demolished or changed beyond all recognition: the pubs have been gentrified, working class terraces are replaced by apartment blocks and old warehouses are converted into offices. My paintings show the cycle of abandonment,decay, destruction and renewal of the inner-city landscape - testament to the ending of an era. 'Industrial Cathedral Pyrmont' focuses on the mysterious patterns of shadow made by the fall of light. The cavernous space & rows of columns reminded me of the interiors of cathedrals & ruined abbeys. The wall at the back was made of the famous butter-yellow Pyrmont sandstone, which has been quarried to decorate the best loved historic Sydney buildings such as the Australian Museum, the Sydney Post Office, the University of Sydney. At sunset the rock face would catch the last rays of light & the derelict warehouse would be transformed.

I am Indonesian In Indonesia, I am Chinese In China, I am Indonesian I celebrate Lunar New Year I eat noodles on my birthday I speak Hokkien with my hometown friends I speak a little bit of Mandarin I don't speak Bahasa very well I don't practice Indonesian tradition I was afraid to die in 1998 I hardly have native Indonesian friends I don't even understand their culture I don't feel belonging to Indonesia I live in Medan. Medan is in Indonesia I have no Indonesian value I can be proud of My parents never talk about it All I know is I am Chinese who lives in Medan This work is a series of self-portrait. It is a visual exploration of my feeling on questioning my identity, which carries issues of nationality, belonging, and condition. Incubated from my personal experience as a Chinese Indonesia from Medan, I seek to get deeply immersed in the emotion crisis to explore the idea of the split between how I feel and how I appear. I create active pieces that unseen in the world of reality to reflect my mental and physical sense of alienation and disconnection. Inspired by Danto's statement "The experience of arts becomes a moral adventure rather than merely an aesthetic interlude", the works itself give me therapeutic moments and meditative quality that allow me to comprehend more the issue. Hence, the performative value in every picture is a manifestation of an idea of examining the fragment of experiences that is being recorded in a single moment. By involving my physical body, I aspired to immerse into the experiences. The role of photography here is not merely a record of action but unites with the performative act to enhance the perception of the idea. These pictures employ a soft look to achieve the lost-in-paradise feeling.

Artist bio Born in Indonesia, Willis believes 'Art is a method of self-discovery' therefore she strives to make art that is honest at least to her. Departing from an experimental approach, she works with a strong emphasis on visual elements and emotional experiences. Issues of self, alienation, and condition are consistently explored with the uses of photography, performance and mix media installation in her art practices. Her works always embark from her personal experiences, which also aim for a visual language to both universal and personal interpretation. She received Silver Award from Crowbar Awards and Honorable Mention from PDN, and has exhibited at the Alliance Française de Singapour and Dahlia Gallery.

Art description This is to give the viewers an idea of the usual way of living of the people in the kampong (village) during the old days in Singapore. Houses are made from wooden materials, built very far from one another and lacking of general supply of electricity, running water and sewage system. In this painting, you can see the kitchen area of an old kampong house built nearby the sea. Floors are made up of wooden panels and stilts fastened together with ropes to make it elevated on the ground. No walls can be seen which makes the area very well ventilated. In the middle part of the painting is a typical dining area of the kampong people. A wooden bench and a table with a kitchen utensil holder placed on top of it. Plates, cups and other cooking utensils and food items are well arranged on the utensil holder. Generally, this painting expresses that Kampong Life was truly a simple way of living life.

Art description Interested in the idea of the "unnoticed/ lesser prominent" this time, Khai uses mainly animals to convey this idea. In his recent series of paintings, he compared the idea of the elephant and the rhinoceros to the popular Batman and Robin duo in the context of the animal kingdom. Being a young Malay Singaporean serving the National Service as a military musician, Khai feels that the general public views him as a minority and to a certain extent, unimportant. Funny yet serious, his series of paintings portray the "sad but true" nature of the society we live in. By infusing elements of humour into the paintings, the animals have now been removed from its original context of a strong animal into somewhat a laughing stock. "24 Hit Combo" is an extension from his "Anything but Frivolous" series that was exhibited in SUNJIN GALLERIES in 2009. Particularly for this series, Khai had selectively chosen to super-impose animals with the zords* from the popular Power Rangers series.

Artist bio Undeniably, animals have been a regular pick in his choice of subject matter. Growing up, he has always been awed by images of animals, be it wild or domesticated. Varying from geographical documentaries to cartoon series, animals are one of the most prominent subjects that interests him till today. He could still recall how he would question his father every time, to compare which of two animals were stronger. Gradually, his fondness for the "second best" became more apparent ( eg. jaguar over the lion, marlin over the shark, etc.). Khai graduated with a Diploma in Fine Arts (Painting) from Lasalle College of the Arts in 2009. He has participated actively in various exhibitions both in and outside of the college such as Redlight (2009),THE LASALLE SHOW 09(2009) and France + Singapore New Generation Artists (2009) to name a few. In 2009, he also bagged the first prize in the SLA painting competition organized by the Singapore Land Authority. Currently, Khai is serving his National Service as a military musician in the SAF Ceremonial Band.

Art description: Jessica Honey's work looks at the strange genre of children's fashion media and explores the process of psychological transference in relation to portraiture and print media. Art description: The philosophical and poetic writing from Italo Calvino's famous novel 'Invisible Cities' acted as the inspiration for the drawing 'Mortal Cities'. The ideas within the novel, act as a series of meditations and offer us an alternative approach to the way we think about cities, how they are formed and how they function. As with the drawing, the novel also explores the themes of time and space, movement and change, the power of memory and how the past qualifies the future.

Artist bio: I am a freelance photographer based in Melbourne, Australia. I picked up my first Pentax SLR camera at 15, and it was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. I have travelled, studied and worked abroad extensively, now making Melbourne my home base. Inspired by shapes, textures and colors found in nature, food and still life, my work often transforms a familiar object into something altogether new. I am always updating my portfolio and pursuing work.

Art description: Trevethan uses cues from the visible world to reconstruct an internalised world of memories; filed away, distorted and recorded only to be recalled, revised and re-recorded at a later date. Primarily dealing with observation and recording of space and imagery, her process echoes the mind and body's process of looking/seeing and deciphering visual information.

Artist bio: Merryn J Trevethan is a Melbourne based artist well known for her vibrant, dynamic paintings that explore the suburban landscape. She has held many successful solo exhibitions, including "Off to Never Never Land" in 2010 and has been included in many prestigious contemporary art prizes and group exhibitions, including the R. & M. McGivern Art Prize, ABN AMRO Emerging Artists Award and The Hutchins Art Prize. In 2005, Trevethan completed her Masters of Fine Arts (By Research) at Monash University. In 2008, Trevethan was Short Listed for the "Toyota Community Spirit Artist Travel Award and in 2009 Trevethan travelled to China where she was an artist in residence at Red Gate Gallery- International Artist Residency Program, in Beijing. Trevethan's work was included in "Network" exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, Victoria in 2011 and she will be travelling to New York as an artist in residence at Point B Worklodge.
