Artist: Karen Bloomfield Title: 'Little Big Bird' Medium: Charcoal & Acrylic on plywood Size: 120 x 86cm

Art description Eagles symbolize the strength and action of man. The eagle is used as an emblem for the United States of America. In Christianity the eagle represents salvation. How very fragile it all is.

Artist bio Karen Bloomfield has been capturing her visual world in drawings since the age of 3. Early loss and challenge has led to Karen becoming an artist interested in exploring the dichotomy of relationship, society, religion and expectation. By looking beyond the visually apparent, Karen intends for her images to evoke questions of intention, reality, good and evil, seen and unseen. Karen's influences have been early realist painter Caravaggio, as well as contemporary Odd Nerdrum, and surrealist painter Dali. Living and working on the beautiful NSW Central Coast, Karen's current interest in charcoal and acrylic mediums provide a depth and detail of imagery which draw the viewer into a world apart.

Artist: Gabriella Hirst Title: Falling Teeth (M.A.M.L) Medium: Gouache on Silk Size: 1.9mX1.2mX0.9m Art description My current work, a series of layered paintings on transparent silk, respond to my research into the life of the 18th century feral child Marie-Angelique Memmie LeBlanc, an exploration into the theme of 'savage vs civilized' . In this series I am drawing upon the conflicts of a specific individual in history, as a greater exploration of human nature. My use of silk as a medium stems from my discovery of Leblanc's later profession as a silk flower manufacturer, and the powerful contrast that this held to her wild feral-child foundations. As a luxury fabric with natural, animal origins, a complex history of trade, transport and the merging of cultures, the story of silk hold great parallels to the story of my subject. The malleable, translucent qualities of the fabric allow the building of visual layers in the traditions of old master glazing techniques, obscuring and revealing, selectively and through chance, as stories are obscured through history, and 'savage' is hidden within humanity.

Artist bio Born 1990, Sydney, Australia. I grew up and Sydney and completed my BFA in Painting and Drawing in 2010 at the College of Fine arts. I also spent a year studying at the IUAV university in Venice, Italy. I use painting to explore my interest in the fragility of human life, the cloudiness of human nature and the stories and memories that hold us together as a species. I like to play with photography, craft and new media, and I am increasing interested in combining painting with sculptural and sound art installation. I have exhibited works in both Venice (Fondazione Buziol, March 2010), and Sydney (Verge Gallery February 2011, Carriageworks December 2010, Kudos Gallery November 2010) and am currently undertaking a studio residency through Serial Space Anyplace Projects in Rozelle, Sydney.

Artist bio My art career began on a small island off the coast of Far North Queensland. I believe that the brilliant colour of the Queensland sun and landscape inspired the bold line, design and freedom of my paintings. My works are derived from a wide range of subjects, both abstract and objective. I have a sense of play and am freely experimental with most mediums which is reflected in the paintings. I have always been passionate about the French Fauve painters and my work has been influenced by their energy and use of vibrant colour. My paintings have been shown at various regional exhibitions in Australia and they are hung in private and corporate collections worldwide.

Artist: Maxwell Gillon Title: "It's Better To Burn Out Than To Fade Away" 2010 Medium: Felt Tip Pen On Cardoard Size: 3 A2 Works Art description This 3 part series reflects upon the complexities surrounding death and fame and the links between the two, the opinions are left ambiguous as conflicting opinions regarding the subject's life and death are imbeded in the background as text. The work centres around how an early or publicised death often concretes the memory of the dead as a tragic hero, when one dies in the spotlight suddenly the media draws attention away from the negativity they focused on before to the positive aspects, the series reflects how we all rejoice in a public death. human kind revolves around death, it is the only thing that is certain, it is where we are all going to, in some twisted way we are all seduced by the idea of a beautiful death, of a james dean. possibly our macabe interest in the media death stems from a need for the concept of death to forever be present in our society in order to cling to our own mortality.

Artist bio maxwell gillon is a young and emerging artist of 18 years old, his inspirations include art film-makers such as werner herzog, igmar bergman and harmony korine.His subjects often stem from the contemplative literature of authors such as george orwell, j.g. ballard and arthur rimbaud. His work has previously had comparisons to intricate comic book art and op art.

Artist bio Claude Jones is a Sydney based artist who creates hybrid, mutant and anthropomorphized forms that question our complex and often contradictory relationship with nature. Since 2005, the artist has been exploring the theme of hybridism in a series of solo exhibitions with titles including Taxonomy, Peculiar Biologies, Mythology & Biology, Mutation & Imagination and Hybrid states. Jones has participated in numerous group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Her works are held in the collections of the AGNSW, in Artbank and in international public and private collections. Artist: Wilson Arbis Title: For We Are Young And Free Medium: Charcoal on Paper Size: 77cm X 61cm Art description The drawing depicts the sense of emotions of what it is like to look in through in the life of a refugee that are detained. It has always been a controversial subject often overlooked and forgotten, left behind.

Artist bio I was born in South East Asia and grew up from a small fishing town in the Philippines. Migrated to Australia in 1997 and have since come to love and enjoy the benefits of being a part of this country and what is has to offer. I studied fine arts and graphics in Nepean Tafe, in which i would gladly love to continue, if given the chance once more. Pursuing drawing and painting is one of my main goals this year.

Artist: Sarah Park Title: IlluminateMedium: Oil on LinenSize: 46 x 61 cm Art description Up until my self acceptance, I have always disregarded my scars or have tried to ignore them. My anger towards my scars have almost made me seek medical treatment to remove them. 'Illuminate' depicts my embracement of my scars as an organic signature and a lasting monument of my survival. Instead of acknowledging the negativity our society places on beauty and on scars, I'm fighting to assert the beauty of individuality and personal importance in people's scars and even if it appears unusual, there is beauty that can found within them.

Artist: Eva Hampel Title: Mallee Story : My Grandmother's necklace never saw a Ball Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 91cm X 122cm Art description My Grandmother's life was a hard one in the arid Mallee country of Northwest Victoria. There, after the trials of WW2 and years struggling to raise a family of five children, my grandparents finally lost their small soldier settler farm to drought, dust storms, and plagues of locusts and mice. My Grandmother received this necklace very late in her life, when her opportunities to experience the grace and romance it embodies were long past, and this painting reflects on that sadness. The fall of the necklace suggests the lack of her body to support it, and the drapery both creates a setting, and conceals something unseen, something unattainable, suggesting perhaps the melancholy of being unable to achieve other possibilities in her life. There is an emphasis on the creation of a luminous quality of light, and a sense of something missing, something beyond.

Artist bio BIOGRAPHY I have now pursued practice in creative art since the late 1990s, following a longstanding interest in art underlying my design career. I come to the creative arts from a background in landscape architecture and the environmental sciences. The discipline of landscape design is a strongly creative field. The best landscape design identifies the 'sense of place' of the design location and highlights that quality through an expressive design solution. My design training, as well as the detailed understanding of natural environments that stems from my scientific studies and a strong personal interest in wild places, strongly underlie my current practice in painting, particularly landscape painting. 1980 BACHELOR OF SCIENCE WITH FIRST CLASS HONOURS, University of Sydney. Artist bio Patricia Casey - Brief Biography Winner of the HeadOn Photographic Portrait Prize in 2006, Patricia Casey has been a practicing artist since 1999 and has exhibited in group and solo exhibitions during this time. She completed her Master of Visual Arts (Research) degree in 2009 and Master of Studio Arts in 2006 at the University of Sydney. Patricia was a finalist in the Sir John Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW in 2002 and 2005 and she was selected for the public art exhibition, "Sydney Looking Forward" in 2002. She has received a number of awards and her work has been exhibited overseas in China and America. Patricia's work has also been shown, in regional and interstate galleries, including the Queensland Centre for Photography in 2009 and 2010. Patricia's ongoing research deals with the themes of memory, dreams and imagination. While her work is primarily located within photography, Patricia also uses mixed media, craft and installation techniques. She is currently represented by NG Art in Sydney and her seventh solo exhibition Scented Gardens for the Blind was held August 2010 in Sydney.

Art description These Aboriginal women of the Kimberley region were convicted of cattle killing in 1896. Despite their treatment they walk with pride. I would like today's people to think about what these women, their children and their men went through back then.

Artist bio After working in administrative and customer service positions for many years I studied Visual Arts and Contemporary Craft Certificate III at Bega Tafe and graduated in December 2009. Upon completion I was awarded the Illawarra Tafe Student Association Encouragement Award. I was also selected as a finalist in the 2009 Country Energy Countryscapes prize with a small acrylic (30cm x 30cm) titled Candelo Crossing which was on the cover of the 2009 Lismore Regional Gallery Countryscapes exhibition and also featured in the 2009 RM Williams Australian Outback Magazine Oct/Nov issue. In 1992 I worked as an Arts Assistant where I was responsible for helping to teach children from Kinder to Year 6 at Wolumla Primary School (1 dpw) using part of the curriculum at the time and incorporating my own and the children's ideas. Some of the children's work was then exhibited at the JR Kirkland Art Prize that year. I continue to draw and paint from home and hope to have my first solo exhibition in 2011. Artist: Janaki Lele Title: Lone Shadows Medium: Paper Cuts Size: 17 cm x 17 cm

Art description The artwork was inspired by my daily walk at the Centennial park in Sydney. I would usually walk towards the direction of the sun and hence all the long shadows would fall in my direction along the avenue. It made an interesting pattern and the trees were almost always seen silhouetted against the golden summer light. My effort here was to play with the light and shadow, the positives and the negatives in the frame.

Artist bio I am an architect by profession and paper artist by passion. I embarked upon my papery journey in late 2009 and haven't looked back since. It started as paper artworks and then I proceeded on to creating lamps out of food packaging boxes and used paper bags. I had all my works on exhibit at the North Sydney Community Centre's markets in August 2010.

Art description Twilight, from my Odyssey series. It is an attempt to capture the soft, dreamy atmosphere produced by the diffused light from the sky during the early evening.

They evoke figuration or representation from the spontaneous abstracted form, from corals or sea creatures, to gnarly trees or topographic terrain maps. They expose the human desire and comfort in familiarity and recognition, but at the same time a deep intrigue in the unknown.

Art description As a child, I was a tear away. In an effort to relieve my parents, my Grandad took me for long walks around Sydney Harbour. We'd spend entire days just wandering, enjoying each other's company in the sun, lifting rocks for crabs and finding discarded treasures. I remember one day in particular when we fished with hand lines under Jeffery Street Wharf. We didn't catch anything big enough to keep, but I remember looking deeply into the oddly vivid green water, watching seaweed sway as light played across the surface. That night, armed with a pack of fresh textas, I tried to capture what I had seen. Although the drawing itself looked like nothing in particular, it prompted beauty held in memory. .

Art description Gabriela Soelkner - artist statement Lifeboat series : Boats are vessels , containers that hold and carry us as we make what on the surface appears to be our separate journeys on the one sea . Fishing lines and nets represent the potential capture of a life giving catch , our saving grace . This work is an offering to the realisation that there is no separation between myself and the sun , the mangroves and the sea , the boat , the fish and all the fishermen .

Artist bio Gabriela Soelkner I can still remember vividly the first time I put pencil to paper and experienced the excitement of drawing , I would of been 9 or 10 years old and the wonder of seeing ideas appear as images is still with me today . After completing a three year visual arts drawing certificate in 1993 I began exhibiting in various art awards and group exhibitions . At the end of that year I also had my first solo exhibition at Brisbane's Museum of Contemporary Art's Loading Bay Gallery . My art practice has included participating in many workshops with highly regarded artists such as Mike Parr , Andrew Sibley and Graham Fransella . I have exhibited in too many group exhibitions to remember and have also entered a number of Art Awards . Twenty years ago I joined a printmaking collective and began experimenting with combinations of woodcut and drawing . With a fellow artist I established a small company' Collaborart' specialising in site specific screenprints up to 23 metres in length . While I enjoyed designing I soon realised I have a greater passion for drawing spontaneously without a preconceived outcome or plan . I have collaborated with other visual artists but prefer drawing alone in my studio by the creek on the boundary of Wollumbin World Heritage National Park. I have been inspired by the work of Emily Kngwarreye , Ian Fairweather , Sidney Nolan , Mike Parr , Sean Scully, Mark Rothko , Rover Thomas and Cy Twombley to name a few . My art practice often invests my life with synchronised insight and moments of pure freedom . Through my art I have explored many industrial sites in Sydney that were off limits to the public :Cockatoo Island; Eveleigh Railway Workshops; industrial sites in Pyrmont & Rozelle; the wharves of Barangaroo, Woolloomooloo, Walsh Bay, Glebe Island & White Bay. The astounding rate of Sydney's recent development has both fascinated & repelled me. My challenge is painting to an unknown but inevitable time limit as buildings are demolished as fast as I can paint them. I have an uncanny instinct for selecting subjects that are about to vanish. Ironically the attraction of these places is their poignant impermanence. As a plein air painter, I set up my easel by the side of the road, on windswept rooftops or on demolition sites.The challenges of painting outdoors include distractions from workmen & passers-by, constantly changing light & Sydney's notoriously unpredictable weather. Almost everything that I have painted has either been demolished or changed beyond all recognition: the pubs have been gentrified, working class terraces are replaced by apartment blocks and old warehouses are converted into offices. My paintings show the cycle of abandonment,decay, destruction and renewal of the inner-city landscape - testament to the ending of an era. 'Industrial Cathedral Eveleigh' at first sight a medieval stained glass window in Chatres, is actually a grubby vandalized corner of a derelict goods yard.

For all that it was once a strictly functional industrial building, this building combined the haunting melancholy of a bombed out Gothic cathedral with a whiff of the surrealism of Salvador Dali.

My challenge is painting to an unknown but inevitable time limit as buildings are demolished as fast as I can paint them. I have an uncanny instinct for selecting subjects that are about to vanish. Ironically the attraction of these places is their poignant impermanence. As a plain air painter, I set up my easel by the side of the road, on windswept rooftops or on demolition sites. The challenges of painting outdoors include distractions from workmen & passers-by, constantly changing light & Sydney's notoriously unpredictable weather. Almost everything that I have painted has either been demolished or changed beyond all recognition: the pubs have been gentrified, working class terraces are replaced by apartment blocks and old warehouses are converted into offices. My paintings show the cycle of abandonment,decay, destruction and renewal of the inner-city landscape - testament to the ending of an era. 'Industrial Cathedral Pyrmont' focuses on the mysterious patterns of shadow made by the fall of light. The cavernous space & rows of columns reminded me of the interiors of cathedrals & ruined abbeys. The wall at the back was made of the famous butter-yellow Pyrmont sandstone, which has been quarried to decorate the best loved historic Sydney buildings such as the Australian Museum, the Sydney Post Office, the University of Sydney. At sunset the rock face would catch the last rays of light & the derelict warehouse would be transformed.

Art description I try to use different elements and materials from my background, mostly related to female activities, to make my artworks. Carpet can be considered as an art form and it also is a famous handcraft of Iran. Handmade carpets are mainly woven by women. In addition, Farsi language as the official language of Iran is another emlement. Therefore, I manipulate forms of Farsi alphabetic letters and try to show them as lines. Lines are twisted to resemble woven Persian carpet threads.

Artist bio I am originally from Iran. My undergraduate degree is in engineering. However, it was never satisfying for me so I moved into the field of art, attending theoretical and practical courses. My artistic background is abstract painting on a large scale. I have had four solo exhibitions, one joint exhibition and number of private shows. I have also taken part in several group shows. Almost three years ago, I migrated to Australia, applied for Master of Studio Arts (MSA) in Sydney College of Arts and completed the program. Now, I am a current student in Master of Fine Art (MFA) at the same university. During my stay in Australia, my art works mostly shifted from two dimensional to three dimensional works. They carry my cultural, social and political background plus my individual perspective.

The works exist in various degrees of being detached from reality, creating an ironic tension between real and fiction. Artist bio Currently my work is exploring the boundaries between natural and unnatural. Where does this line lie, if at all? My images are multi-layered using techniques that involve total control to random marks such as dribbles and splashes. As well as canvas I am using recycled metal objects that have begun to rust which not only give beautiful texture and colour to the works, but are an example of how this natural/unnatural dichotomy is not clearly edged. Also, in a similar polarity, I am attempting to merge abstract expressionism with elements of realism.

Art description An explosion of cosmic proportions as I experiment and explore with two canvases The base canvas is used to portray the scale of the moment while the second canvas that has been cut and layered allows me to provide a detailed insight.

Art description IDEA _ When we travelled along the Silver City Highway, we had a break. There was a single dead tree; and in its branches, there was caught a white plastic bag, flagging in the wind. It was the only sound surrounded by nothing else than rocky soil and absolute silence under a dispiteous sun. CONCEPT _ Three large-scaled (delicate & very light) plastic sheets, painted in the 'Outback colours' red & black, hanging on wool threads. A small fan will slightly move the sheets; that creates a slight sizzling noise surrounded by the silence of the room. A video with close-up shots of the sun and moving clouds will be projected onto the waving sheets (duration 5:30mins, looped). Art description The outlines of the Austral-Asian coasts are fascinating to me. In NZ and Australia I always have my scribble book to hand, and I can't help it to try to see the coast line like a bird. To abstract/stylize the coast is an interesting encounter for me, to make the incredible power of nature visible, but not obvious. The viewer is encouraged to explore the painting, just as the secrets and wonders, the Earth offers.

Artist bio Melissa Wheeler is a new and emerging visual artist. She works in a variety of media specialising in coloured pencil abstract drawings and printmaking. She has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions across the Southern Highlands, Wollondilly and Campbelltown areas. She has been a volunteer artist at her local primary school and child care centre, and has been involved in outdoor chalk art for the launch of ARTYCaf Cafe in Narellan. She has also been involved with youth week 2011 creating murals with teenagers for Tahmoor Youth Hub. Melissa is currently completing her Diploma of Fine Arts (stage 2) at Campbelltown TAFE and holds Cert IV in business management. She has created her own arts business teaching art to kids. .

Art description We normally see and relate to things within a context. We consider what came before, imagine what will come after, draw conclusions about relationships, and create an impression in our mind which may or may not be accurate to the reality before us. This impression is very valuable because at any time, even when the object cannot be seen, we can feel comfortable that we understand it, that it has its place in our psyche and our picture of the world. Therefore we become attached to this impression, and even years later, if we see the same object, we continue to relate to the impression in our mind rather than the true nature of the object itself. The context is so important that without it we struggle to make conclusive assessments of things. In fog, the effect of the context is partly removed.

Artist bio Svetlana Bailey was born in St. Petersburg in 1984 and lives and works in Sydney. In 2010 Svetlana graduated from the UNSW College of Fine Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons 1st Class). Her work focuses on photographing various surroundings covered in fog. When seen in fog, one is able to experience one's environment outside its usual context. This generates enough uncertainty that the objects in the photograph become less tied to our preconceptions and appear in unexpected ways. We are reminded that the reality that surrounds us may not be exactly as we would like to believe.

The tumbelweed is a metaphor for the transitory nature of life, the ladder is the connection to our future and the stars of the cosmos are reflected in the black pool of fate.
