Utilization of Wind Energy in Aruba Green Electricity Generation from Wind Energy CLIMATE PROTECTION PROJECT FACTSHEET ADDITIONAL SOCIAL & ECOLOGICAL BENEFITS In addition to saving CO2 , the project also brings further benefits. Each year 126,000 MWh of clean electricity is fed into the grid, which strengthens the local economy and creates long-term jobs. The dependency on energy imports is reduced and the generated revenues from the wind park will stay in the region and additionally increase Aruba’s independence. The project is the first of its kind and is thus an important pioneer work within this field. Furthermore, the air quality improves due to a lower amount of fossil fuels being utilized, which benefits both the local inhabitants and the environment. Due to the prevailing northwest wind, the area is very well suited for the production of clima- te-friendly electricity. The turbines are 80 meters high and produce 126 GWh of green electricity annually, which covers 15% of the current Aruban energy consumption. Up until now, the power supply has mainly depended on fossil fuels such as diesel, which is expensive to import as well as releasing a si- gnificant amount of destructive CO 2 emissions. Additionally, the tanks also pose a threat to the coast. The climate protec- tion project, in contrast, results in a lower amount of fossil fu- els being imported and incinerated, which saves up to 150,000 tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent each year. GOLD STANDARD The Gold Standard Foundation is a Swiss organization, initiated by a group of 50 NGOs including the WWF (World Wide Fund For Nature). The aim is to ensure that energy efficiency and renewable energy projects reduce CO 2 emissions and provide benefits to the local population. Each Gold Standard project must comply with the strict requirements of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and present additional environmental and social benefits, such as positive impacts on the well-being of the community hosting the project. The Gold Standard requirements are one of the highest standards in the world. The purchase of Verified Emission Reductions according to the Gold Standard contributes to climate and environmental protection and promotes sustainable development by improving the social situation of the population within the project country. PROJECT COUNTRY Aruba is located in the Caribbean Sea outside Venezuela. To- gether with Bonaire and Curaçao it is part of the ABC Islands, whilst Aruba is the smallest of them. Also the bustling Palm Beach is brimming with tourists, more secluded and quiet beaches can be found on the southern west coast. On the east side of the island, the waves are splashing wildly against the cliffs and the beautiful beaches turn into a rocky desert with giant cactuses and limestone cliffs. The national park Arikok constitutes 20% of the island, here the typical Divi Divi trees are growing. They are curved by the constant trade winds and represent a landmark of the island. There are many different species of lizards, and the poisonous Aruba rattlesnake can also be spotted. Aruba is also home to wild goats and donkeys for which protected areas have been created. Parts of the ocean around the island are under protection as well. CO2 COMPENSATION Compensation of greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide aims to obviate or absorb climate-damaging emissions through international climate protection projects. The financing of these worldwide projects is provided by the industrial countries and signatories of the Kyoto protocol. The basic principle of CO 2 compensation is based on the irrelevance of where in the world CO 2 or other climate-damaging gases are avoided. As emissions and the reduction of those do not act according to country borders, the reduction can take place in the areas where it is best feasible. THE POWER OF NATUREWind energy is one of the cleanest forms of energy today. In some regions wind is constantly available and therefore providing great potential. A global network of wind power plants would be able to meet the current and future electricity demand. The generati-on of clean electricity is driven by the continuous circular motion of the rotor and a generator that converts the kinetic energy into electrical energy. No fossil fuels or nuclear power are being utilized to generate electricity from wind, no CO2 emissions or ato-mic waste is created. This results in green electricity generation from wind being an important contribution to climate protection.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGs)On 1 January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations offi cially became effected. The goals for sustainable development are political objectives where social, economic and ecological aspects are on the agenda.

One important fi nding is that the eradication of poverty must be accompanied by policies that support economic growth as well as addressing a range of social needs. This includes edu-cation, health, social protection, and employment opportu-nities, as well as tackling climate change and protecting the environment.

Sustainable development signifi es a holistic development that only works if people collaborate globally. Climate protection projects always fulfi ll goal number 13 “Climate Action” as they reduce the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere. Furthermore, by protecting the environment, the standard of living of the local population is additionally improved.

The project contributes to the achievement of the following sustainability goals:

7 Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

8 Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

13 Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
