From the PrincipalInspiration and Gratefulness

Who or what inspires you?

I am sure we can all think of people who are a source of inspiration for us, maybe it is someone famous, popular, rich or powerful. Yet it is often the people who most care for us and we most care about that become our true inspiration; family, friends, teachers, classmates, mentors, coaches and the like.

Inspiration can provide motivation for our future. Being inspired can provide a platform for us to unleash our true potential, and upon reflection, enables us to practice gratefulness for others and our circumstances.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German theologian once said, “In ordinary life we hardly realise that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich.”

As a community, we thank God for the inspiration he provides through the people and experiences at Cornerstone College. There are also many things for which we can be grateful, such as;

• Students who relish the chance to make the most of every opportunity to learn what is put before them. Students who demonstrate grit and determination towards their learning. Students who approach each day with hope, optimism and enthusiasm. Students who show each other kindness, understanding and respect.

• Parents who support their children’s education and put their trust and confidence in our staff. Parents who also offer their affirmation, encouragement and prayers.

• The outstanding staff of Cornerstone College, who give so much of themselves to provide the best learning and most supportive environment for the students entrusted to them. They deal optimistically with the challenges of their vocation and celebrate in the growth and development of our students.

2014 has been an incredible year of change and opportunity for our College. In simple terms, there have been three main factors; the expansion of our middle school, the introduction of Year 7s, and the many facets of outworking our strategic plan. This edition of Clippings shows the breadth and depth of these changes and opportunities. The partnership between staff, students, families and the wider community have enabled our expectations for 2014 to be exceeded and I am inspired by and grateful for the opportunities that lie ahead.

Music Cabaret (cover)Cornerstone rang out to the “Sounds of the Sixties” on Friday 12 September as over 100 of our talented music students presented this year’s Cabaret to almost 500 people in inbarendi. Each of the Cornerstone music ensembles presented items around the 60s theme and several Year 12 Music students performed sensational solos.

Exactly 50 years since they visited Adelaide, the ‘Fab Four’ (Paul, John, George and Ringo) had the whole crowd up and dancing to some of their biggest hits to cap off a fantastic night.

Congratulations to all of our student performers and a huge thank you to all staff and students who assisted in creating the “Sounds of the Sixties”.

On Friday 25 July, students and staff at Cornerstone celebrated China Day. It was our annual Chinese cultural event to promote Chinese language and culture, and was also a fundraising activity. Our sister school, Beijing Haidian Foreign Language Shiyan School, has been providing scholarships for underprivileged children in rural China to receive an education. As Haidian’s sister school, we love to be involved and show our support.

On China Day, Cornerstone students wore something Chinese or something red and made a donation. Students were also able to purchase Chinese fried rice and noodles, spring rolls and prawn crackers along with various Chinese souvenirs. There were many activities such as table tennis and badminton competitions, calligraphy, chopstick races, etc and of course the Panda and Tigress mascot costumes brought so much fun for us! The College was filled with a jubilant atmosphere on this special day.

China DayThe glitz and glamour of the red carpet came to Cornerstone on Saturday 26 July, as the Year 12s were dressed to impress for their Formal celebrations. The Pre-formal event, held at the College, was a time for students and their families to celebrate. The flashing of cameras was only outdone by the flashing of smiles as the beautifully dressed students were presented to the audience.

Students then made their way down the hill to the Crowne Plaza in a variety of vehicles; double decker party buses, stretch limousines and muscle cars, just to name a few.

At the Formal venue students and staff were treated to a 15th floor view of the city, a lovely dinner, speeches, awards and dancing. Congratulations to the Year 12s for making it to this milestone of their schooling – we certainly celebrated in style.

Many thanks to all those who planned and organised the evening, especially Mrs Kennedy for the beautiful flower arrangements, the Marketing Team for the amazing Pre-Formal, and to the staff and students of the Formal Committee.

SNOW, SNOW, SNOW are the only words that really need to be used to describe the Cornerstone Ski Trip this year.

The trip was blessed with amazing snow conditions and combined with the enthusiasm of all the students and staff, a great time was had by all. After an uneventful bus trip on Saturday night we arrived at Falls Creek on Sunday morning to bright sunshine, no wind and powder snow. After a gear fit-out and a first lesson everyone was keen to put their skills to the test. The conditions remained ideal on the slopes on Monday and by evening back at our accommodation at Howman’s Gap there were many sore and tired muscles.

Despite some worsening weather in the middle of the week which meant the occasional visit to the café and shops, the Cornerstone crew powered on mastering many new skiing and boarding skills.

By Friday, our last day, and with more fresh snow overnight, everyone was a little frustrated when the high winds kept the lifts on hold for the morning. Fortunately conditions abated after lunch and our final hours on the mountain were filled with great fun and many wonderful memories were created.

The Ski Trip of 2014 will live long in the memories of all of us!

The end of July saw the completion of our sister school’s visit, during which time we hosted two teachers and twenty students from our sister school in Beijing. Students stayed with host families, tasting our Australian way of life at school and at home for one week.

Favourite activities included playing various sports, helping to prepare meals, seeing our unique wildlife, and dissecting an eyeball in practical science lessons. Cornerstone students benefited from cultural exchange, and in particular from extra language practice in the senior classes, especially during the extended time that Mr Luo, the exchange teacher, was able to spend with us.

Grateful thanks must go to 23 host families, for so readily sharing their family time with our guests, thereby enabling our valued exchange program to continue.

ALAS ExhibitionThe annual ALAS Exhibition had its opening night at the Mount Barker Library on Friday 1 August. High schools from across the Adelaide Hills entered numerous student works, displaying a fantastic range of concepts and techniques.

The evening was very well supported by students, their families and the wider community. We enjoyed the inspiring guest speaker Helen Stacey and were treated to live music and food prepared by students from the Eastern Fleurieu.

Prizes were awarded on the night to a Middle and Senior student from each school - our students in these categories were Sophie Rhodes and Isabel Richards. Congratulations to these two artists!

It is a fantastic opportunity to be able to exhibit works which students create in our Art and Design classes, and for the general public to be able to enjoy.

On Friday 15 August, Dr Deane Hutton, one of Australia’s best known science educators, came to Cornerstone to present his show “Going Green with Dr Deane” to all Year 7-9 Science students.

The 50 minute show was an interactive program, with dramatic demonstrations and experiments enabling the students to appreciate the structure of the Earth, the fragile nature of our air and water resources and the importance of energy. It also stressed how we can be involved in living a sustainable lifestyle without damaging or depleting valuable resources.

Peer Mentoring Pilot Program Science ShowThe first get together of the Year 11 / Year 8 Peer Mentoring Pilot Program occurred on Thursday 21 August.

Twenty four nervous Year 8 students and 24 curious, and possibly nervous, Year 11 students came together as a group to find out more about the program and to meet their partner. The aims of the pilot program were outlined, the students completed a pre-program questionnaire and then the Year 8 students were challenged to find their partners. To add difficulty to this challenge the students were required to do this in silence. The Year 8 students had a name badge to hand out and through facial expressions and gestures (and a little bit of whispering) their partners were located.

During the course of their time together the students participated in some get to know you activities. The noise level and positive vibe in the room showed that the nerves and concerns about the program were slowly being alleviated.

Over the course of the rest of the year the partners were encouraged to catch up with each other on a regular basis during paired Home Group time, Chapel, lunchtime, Summit to School and another get together as a whole group later in the year.

It was great to see the positive interactions that had already started and we hope that the students, both Year 8s and Year 11s, find this a fun and worthwhile experience. Mrs Leanne Filmer

The Wool4Skool competition is a nation-wide contest which aims to encourage the use of Australian merino wool in fashion - in which students are asked to design an outfit along a particular theme for an Australian iconic designer to construct. The theme for 2014 was “50 years of fashion” covering decades 60s to present, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Woolmark brand.

400 entries were received for the competition from schools all over Australia, some of which were completed as part of the textiles curriculum at their schools. Year 10 Cornerstone student Ruby was awarded runner-up for the Year 10 category, just missing the major prize! Ruby was advised that the designer, Jonathan Ward, specifically chose her design as

the runner up to the winning entry and that she came very close indeed.

Ruby designed a 70s maxi dress, incorporating two unique woollen fabrics to a characteristically bright orange gown, zipped front and intriguing geometric frills all over. She finished it off with another Australian iconic material, a Coober Pedy Opal, used as the zipper pendant for striking effect (as pictured).

“I saw the competition advertised in Girlfriend magazine earlier this year and I thought I’d give it try. I didn’t really expect to get so far but am pleased that I did”. Ruby has designed and made a number of items for herself and family members over the past couple of years, when she has the time. “I’d like to spend

more time designing clothes as I have a lot of ideas”.

Congrats to Ruby on this great achievement.

On Friday 15 August, 46 music students travelled to Victor Harbour to spend three days in intensive rehearsal, preparing for Cabaret. We experienced three days of practise, laughs, activities and fabulous driving. We arrived at Salvation Army Encounter Youth Camp, and began rehearsals almost immediately.

Our walk to Granite Island on Saturday was certainly a highlight for some as we came face to face (or flipper to flipper) with some of Victor Harbour’s local wildlife - a very friendly Sea Lion pup – which became very fascinated with Matt Cooper and his camera. Senior Vocal Ensemble members were privileged enough to see an amazing ‘Soul Factor’ performance, starring Mr Day in a wig, while the other bands participated

in a quiz night with Hot House rising victorious.

Sunday held the most excitement for some, with the Duck-Boat ride out to Seal Rock. On Monday we began our trip home with a performance at Encounter Lutheran College, and finished off with our second performance at Investigator College in Goolwa.

We were blessed with supportive and engaged audiences on both occasions. A special thank you to Mr Day and Mr Janus who directed numerous bands, and also our personal hype-girl Miss Sickerdick and our piano accompanist Mrs Gonsior.

Music Camp 2014Our College is blessed with wonderful support from various businesses who host our Year 10 and 11 students in Workplace Learning. We are very grateful for the hands-on experience our students get because of the generous support of these businesses. We also hosted our long term facility hirers. In appreciation of this support, a ‘Thank You’ breakfast was held for them in our new Middle School building - Paideia.

The breakfast was prepared by our very talented Year 11 Food and Hospitality students who served an exceptional buffet breakfast. It also provided a networking opportunity for those in attendance, and they got to hear from Old Scholar, Brad Holmes, a Wellbeing Coach, who shared his tips for living a healthy life.

Year 10 - Barossa ValleyI really enjoyed our German Heritage excursion to the Barossa. We visited many different places including the Tanunda Museum, Seppeltsfield Winery, Apex Bakery and the Kegelbahn.

I learnt a lot from all of these different places and I especially enjoyed going to Seppeltsfield Winery and learning about the Seppelt family (particularly Sophie Seppelt) and their life in Australia. I also really liked going to the Kegelbahn to play a game called Kegeln (nine-pin bowling) because it was interesting to learn about the origins of ten-pin bowling.

I enjoyed and learnt a lot on the excursion and I think it was very helpful in understanding the German settlers and how they set up their lives when they first migrated to Australia.

Art and Design ExhibitionThe Visual Arts Department held its inaugural Year 10 and 11 Art and Design Exhibition during Week 6 of Term 3.

The exhibition opening was attended by numerous students and their families and it was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the works of students from these year levels.

One of the major reasons for holding this exhibition is to bring the works outside of the classroom and to give Visual Arts students a chance to have their works displayed in a ‘gallery’ setting, and for this to be viewed and appreciated by the College community.

A special thank you to everyone involved!

The official launch of EDITION 2014 took place on Friday 19 September in Anakalypsi. The release of EDITION 2014 was the culminating event in our English Week celebrations.

Contributors to our annual English KLA publication of quality student work, as well as their friends and family, were invited to attend the launch and to receive their copy of our 2014 memento.

In 2014, Year 7 contributors made their entry into our collection. Nearly thirty students, across Years 7-12 contributed to EDITION 2014. The skill and creativity represented in the publication spans a range of text types; from magazine feature articles, to graphic novel compositions, to essays and more conventional narratives.

At the launch, Mr Richard Wesley spoke on behalf of the KLA team and commended the students for their commitment to the craft of quality communication. Similarly, our Principal, Mr Craig Fielke, congratulated everyone involved in the production of EDITION 2014. He thanked the many individual members of our community who encourage and support our students as they learn and offer their remarkable gifts and talents.

I commend EDITION 2014 to our College Community. It is an appealing, entertaining and thought provoking piece of literature. We look forward to the production of EDITION 2015 in the new academic year.

On Thursday 30 October we had the fun of hosting PowerFM’s breakfast broadcast from Cornerstone. We did this to support their fundraising effort called ‘do it in a dress’. This campaign specifically assists girls living in Sierra Leone to get an education. Just $300 sends one girl to school and it was our joint aim with PowerFM to make this happen.

Students could donate a gold coin to wear a fun hat to school, and we sold egg and bacon sandwiches to raise money. It was a great morning where we witnessed live radio in action whilst raising money to help educate young girls. Over $350 was raised which exceeded our goal.

State Champions - WE DID IT!The magic of Knockout Soccer was very much alive in the south eastern town of Keith as Cornerstone attacker Thomas Hector slotted in the second goal that helped his side into the finals round - along with a string of saves from Brad Seidel that Eugene Galekovic would have been proud of. The 2-0 win against Grant High School was part of 400km round trip that put our team one step closer to playing in the final at FFSA Burton Sports Complex. The win meant that our team had qualified for the State Finals in Pool B.

Even reaching the Finals was a great achievement, but after Cornerstone defeated Charles Campbell High School 1-0 in the semi-final, we knew we had a chance to make history. Elliott Wright found the back of the net and our defence stopped many waves of attack.

The Final match was played against was against Hallet Cove High School. An early headed goal from big Will Kidman followed by a cracking drive into the back of the net by Elliott Wright gave the boys the incentive to keep attacking. Lachlan Williams’ toe-poke to score was celebrated with enthusiasm and the final goal was kicked by Jake Pollard. Cornerstone won the game 4 -1 and the trophy was ours! The whole squad contributed valiantly throughout the tournament and I was very proud of their efforts.

When Mrs Sierp and Mrs Doherty discovered that the Year 10 Drama class (which has 15 boys and 6 girls in it) and the Year 10 Dance class (18 girls) were timetabled at the same time, they adapted a script of Snow White to be performed as a lip-synced musical.

Transporting it back to the 1980s, and setting it in Australia the play became quite unique. For example: The Fairy Godmothers became the Fairy God-Bogans, the Narrators became Kylie-Mole-esque school girls, the seven Dwarfs became the very tall Breakdancing Dwarfz Crew, and the King’s palace was transformed into the hottest nightclub in Fairyland ‘The City Palace’.

This craziness was highlighted with the dance girls (who became ‘Fly Girls’)

who choreographed very daggy 1980s dances to classic numbers such as ‘We Built this City’ by Starship, ‘Gold’ by Spandau Ballet, ‘Never Gonna Give you Up’ by Rick Astley, and ‘The Message’ by Grandmaster Flash amongst many others.

If it was ridiculous and 1980s daggy, it was included in the play and the outcome was just fantastic! We had such a great time working with these clever students who left their dignity (and any sense of style) at the door and threw themselves, whole heartedly into our fun show.

Despite the forecast, we had wonderful weather for our annual Food & Fun Fest on Friday 31 October. This assured the large and enthusiastic crowd could enjoy the numerous activities, food and entertainment. Whether it was sharing in some Indian curry, yiros or a hamburger; being entertained by our talented music students or participating in bubble soccer; there was something for everyone of all ages.

A night like this could not happen without the significant support of our school community. We are very grateful to the many parents, staff and students who volunteered their time, donated items or came along to join the night. We are delighted that as a community we raised more than $7,000 towards Middle School seating and shading.

Summit to SchoolOn the last day of Term 3, Cornerstone held its annual Summit to School House event. Approximately 700 students and staff walked, ran or cycled from the Summit of Mount Barker back to the College. The weather was ideal - a great spring day, which made it an enjoyable day for all. The walkers admired an amazing view as they walked down the summit onto Williams Road and the cyclists and runners took on the challenge of some very big hills on Springs Road. It was a successful day for Battunga who won the event and took out the ‘Smelly Sandshoe Trophy’.

On Wednesday 22 October, 62 students, six teachers and six assistant leaders left the grounds of Cornerstone and headed by bus up to the Mount Remarkable National Park to embark on the Year 10 Outdoor Education Bushwalking Expedition.

The students were divided into six different walking groups and over the following three days walked approximately 30km up mountains, down mountains and through some beautiful gorges and all the while carrying their personal camping and survival supplies on their backs.

Despite the warm weather the students all showed great determination and along the way saw some wonderful views, developed deeper friendships, learnt camping and navigational skills and overall they should be very proud of what they achieved.

“I never realised that my grandpa did all those things when he was young”.

“One of my relatives robbed a coach”.

“Your school is nothing like mine, it’s so bright and airy”.

“I once got the cane for sharing a textbook with the girl next to me”.

“It’s nice to stop and get to know my grandson a bit more, I feel closer to him now”.

“What are bobby socks and rope skirts?”.

These are some of the comments and questions I heard as I wandered around Paideia on Wednesday 5 November as the Year 7 Middle School students hosted Heritage Day.

What is Heritage Day I hear you ask? Well in a nutshell, it is a day when our Year 7 students interview a family relative or friend about their lives and then produce a digital story about the

information they have gathered.A great time was had by all and it was great fun hearing about the fascinating pasts that form our student’s heritage (and sometimes shady pasts) and seeing lots of photos of weddings and family celebrations.

The aim of the day was for students to stop and listen to stories of their relatives. To hear where they came from and to celebrate the rich history and sacrifices their relatives made so that they could be here.

Special thanks to all the guests who came along and to the Year 7 students and teachers for participating so positively in this morning.

I look forward to hearing more stories next year from our new Year 7s when we gather again for Heritage Day 2015.

Our classical music ensemble ‘Crescendo’ were invited to perform at the recent opening of the new Summit Health Centre in Mt Barker.

The group consisting of two flutes, clarinet, four violinists, two violas, piano and double bass played a 45 minute set including a mix of ensemble, solo and trio pieces whilst the gathering of health professionals mingled prior to the official speeches and opening of this impressive new building adjacent to the Mt Barker hospital.

Our students all presented their pieces exceptionally well and were wonderful musical ambassadors for Cornerstone at this significant local event. Congratulations to all Crescendo members, and thanks to the parents who accompanied us at this ‘gig’.

In Week 4 Term 4, Year 10 students had the opportunity to participate in an experience of their choice to suit their interests and passion. Choices were:1. Arkaroola2. Central Australia3. Kangaroo Island4. Melbourne5. Sydney6. Yorke Peninsula

Students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in these rich ‘experiences’ and come away with new insights, skills and friendships as they further their journey in Senior School.

Sunday 16 November marked the return of the Annual Adelaide Regional First LEGO League tournament! After eight weeks of researching, LEGO robot building and programming, all our hard work came together!

An early start to the day to arrive at Prince Alfred College saw some weary Year 8, 9 and 11 students stumble into the grounds! With two teams from Cornerstone it was going to be a busy day! A practice run of the robot was first up for both teams so some last minute touch ups in programming the LEGO Robot came and it was game on!

Throughout the day the two teams: The Eliminators and CC’s, were involved in three Robot matches where they program a LEGO robot to perform challenges on a set table against another team. They put together a project based around the theme this year on World Class: Learning Unleashed. And finally they were given a task to perform as a team.

After all this hard work the students performed very well on the day, with CC’s finishing in 10th place for their robot and the Eliminators finishing in 18th place for their robot.

Well done to both teams for bringing it together on the day and representing the College.

Eliminators: James Bretag, Ben March-Feltham, Nick Lamey, Jack Staples, Lachlan Traeger, Mitch Ferber and Robert PowellCC’s - Emmett Wise, Angus Kleeman, Darcy Smith and Matt Owen

Blessed with perfect weather on Friday 10 October, our annual Golf Day was a great success. It’s a time where we connect with our business community in a relaxed golfing environment.

During the day there were some very classy shots hit, along with some more entertaining ones! But more importantly there was a lot of fun and connections that were made. Thanks to all those who supported the day, we trust you enjoyed it as much as we did bringing it to you.

Having won four of our Knockout matches, it was off to the fi nals for the Year 8/9 Girls Soccer Team on Wednesday 17 September. We were going to be playing two matches with the winner of the fi rst match going through to the Grand Final. Our fi rst match was against the Adelaide Language School and it was like playing an international! This was a very tough match as the opposition were very defensive which made scoring extremely hard. At the end of full time the score was 0-0. We then had 20 minutes extra time and it was still 0-0. A penalty shootout followed and we won!The Grand Final match was against Underdale High and this was a much more free fl owing game. However, at the end of full time it was 1-1, so once again 20 minutes extra time, where the score didn’t change and the another penalty shootout! Ahhhh!

Some excellent shooting and very good goal keeping saw us victorious! So after a long day…..we were State Champions!

I was very proud of all the girls throughout the whole Knockout Competition. Their sportsmanship was exceptional and they represented Cornerstone proudly.

Mrs Kristen Felgate-PearceYear 8/9 Girls Soccer Knockout Coach

On Monday September 1, Cornerstone’s netballers headed to ETSA Park to play in the State Finals. Excited anticipation was felt by all as we arrived and started sizing up our possible opponents.

We played three games and successfully defeated Unity College from Murray Bridge, Riverton and Jamestown. This qualifi ed us for a place in the Grand Final against St Columbus. After a close fi rst half we opened up a clear lead in the third quarter to win by ten goals.

Throughout the day all of the girls played fantastically; Lucy Risbey, Simone Laube and Ali Mather shot

magnifi cently in goals. Amy Norsworthy, Nikki Buckley, Emma Schumacher and Jess Sanders played a strong attacking game in the centre court. Our tough and determined defence consisted of Erin Jaensch, Alice Marsh and Alex Bates.

The girls defi nitely deserved their success, they played hard all day, worked well as a team and it was a pleasure to coach such a wonderful team.

CONGRATUALTIONS GIRLS, you played brilliantly!

ST MARK’S LuTHERANSt Mark’s has enjoyed a number of highlights during the latter part of 2014.

Several exciting experiences were planned for Book Week 2014. Book & Blanket saw our Year 6s read a picture book to groups of students across the school. The Splash Theatre Company visited and performed stories relating to the theme ‘Connect to Reading’. Our dress up parade was a colourful event with students enjoying the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character.

At St Mark’s we value the work of experts and the authentic learning experiences they can offer our students. Our Year 1 students were dazzled by a visit from Sci World. Our Year 4 students had the opportunity to work with members of the KESAB team while our Year 5 students further explored what it means to be sustainable through a visit from the South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy. The Australian Communications and Media Authority also informed students from Year 4 to 6 about all matters relating to cyber safety.

Our Year 2 students enjoyed delving back in history. An olden days experience saw our teachers and students dress up in the typical attire of yester year and practise writing using

an ink quill, baking, making dolls from wooden pegs, playing games of the past as well as many other activities.

The St Mark’s choir program has enjoyed considerable success in 2014. The 95 voices of our Junior Primary Choir were most impressive at our recent Special Friends Morning Tea. Their performance of the ever-popular Sound of Music’s ‘Doe A Dear’ was certainly a highlight. Residents of Sash Ferguson warmly welcomed our Senior Choir as they also performed a repertoire of popular pieces. A recent tour to the Barossa Valley provided our students with the opportunity to perform for classes at Redeemer Lutheran School.

‘Cinderella Rockerfella’ - performed by our senior classes was another highlight of this semester. Our parent community were certainly impressed by the colour, energy and musical talent of our students.

Worship at St Mark’s is at the heart of school life. Fortnightly junior and senior chapel, Friday morning whole school chapel experiences and Sunday services are all perfect opportunities for our students to reflect on the Word of God and sing His praises.

As we welcomed our Foundation 2015 students during their recent transition

SPRING HEAD LuTHERANThe year has finished with a flurry of activity at Spring Head. After a big finish to Term 3, which saw our music students take part in a very successful Spring Head on Tour, our Year 4/5 students took part in the first ever BioBlitz in Adelaide, and our 6/7 students presented an excellent PYP Exhibition, Term 4 was busy from the outset.

Our Bike-a-thon, organised by FOSH (Friends of Spring Head) was a great fundraiser for our school and a great day out for our students. We rode the new section of the Amy Gillett bike trail and students sought sponsorship for every kilometre ridden (or walked). All of our students managed to ride or walk at least six kilometres and one Year 7 student rode 40 kilometres in the 90 minute time limit – a huge effort! Over $3100 was raised toward developing a nature play area and upgrading technology at the school.

Grandfriends’ Day saw a large number of visitors joining us at school, and it was a wonderful opportunity for students to interact with grandparents and special friends, and to show off their school. The day finished with a concert by our music students.

The quiz night, organised with Lobethal Lutheran, was extremely well supported. Our hall was full and a huge number of sponsors gave generously to allow the night to go ahead. Over $7000 was raised to go toward next year’s Canberra

In this edition of clippings we share with you some of the recent happenings from two of our LEAH Primary sister schools:

visits there was a certain buzz in the air. We look forward to the new year with a sense of anticipation and rest in the knowledge that with the birth of our Lord Jesus we are reminded of the wonderful sense of hope our young students bring to St Mark’s.

We give thanks to God for the many blessings of 2014.

camp. This term our Year 4-7 students took part in a camp at Illawonga on the Murray. There were three days packed with exciting activities and hands-on learning. Our F/1 class held a sleepover and formed committees to organise food, activities and essential agreements.

Our music students had a huge finish to the year with a showcase concert at the school in Week 7, as well as concerts for Grandfriends’ Day, Onkaparinga Senior Citizens Club, Rockleigh carols, Woodside womens’ fellowship and Spring Head womens’ fellowship. A number of our students will be involved after the end of the school year too, with the turning on of the Lobethal lights, Carols on the Mount in Mount Torrens, and the Woodside and Lobethal pageants.

It was a great year for our students and it was fitting to finish with events like our graduation dinner and closing service, where we could farewell families who were leaving, and say a special thanks to Kym Gladigau, our retiring school council chair. It was also fitting to finish with events like our helpers’ afternoon tea and our prayer partner lunch, where we could thank the people who supported us throughout the year and celebrate the partnerships we have with our community.

Aston Hills updateThe Working Group that are responsible for the management and administration of the educational land at Aston Hills have continued to meet monthly. These meetings have considered and delivered preliminary assistance to the District Council of Mount Barker and Lanser Communities (Aston Hills Developer), who have been actively planning, preparing and installing the infrastructure to support the future development and the greater Mount Barker community. Strong relationships have been formed amongst these groups and other stakeholders, with everyone working together, striving to create an environment and community that is well planned, contemporary and sustainable.

The next phase and focus of the Working Group is to consider how the educational land at Aston Hills can best complement the existing offering of Lutheran education in the Adelaide Hills. The campuses that make up Lutheran Education Adelaide Hills (LEAH) are St Mark’s Lutheran Primary, St Michael’s Lutheran Primary, Spring Head Lutheran Primary, Lobethal Lutheran Primary and Cornerstone College. The Aston Hills educational offering will be strategically and carefully considered, ensuring that the future multi-campus arrangement meets the needs of the community and offers an exciting and seamless journey for each student as they develop their skills and abilities and grow in their faith and knowledge.

While the Working Group analyse data, consider the future, and prepare a vision and Campus Master Plan for LEAH, work will continue towards preparing the site for the development of a future educational centre. An example of the preparatory work is the production of a Landscape Master Plan. This will provide a framework within which the external environment can be created in stages, provisioning for early planting and the creation of a stimulating external learning environment. The Working Group will also continue to work closely with the District Council of Mount Barker and Lanser Communities in identifying opportunities of mutual benefit for shared use facilities and the building of community.

As this exciting new vision for LEAH becomes clearer the Working Group will continue to provide updates. The thoughts and prayers of the LEAH community will help guide, and shape our future and your support in this way is greatly appreciated.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” James 1:17

CATHERINE DE PRINSEWhat year did you graduate from Cornerstone?2011.

What career path have you taken?Music Composition and Education.

Have you done any special study or training for this?I’ve just completed my third year of my Bachelor of Music (Composition) and Arts (Chinese), with a year and a half to go. Add to that many years previous of piano and violin lessons!

What do you hope to be doing in five years’ time?Five years seems a long way away at this point, but I hope that I am still part of an active music circle, promoting either mine or my colleagues’ music.

Above and Beyond

Old Scholars - if you’d like to come to an assembly and share your story with current Cornerstone students we’d love to see you. Your insights and real life experiences are invaluable.

Please contact the College on 8398 6000 if you’d like to get involved.

(Contrary to them, I shamefully enjoy the administrative side of things equally to the creative side.) I am also determined to be quite fluent in Mandarin in the next couple of years so hopefully I am using those language skills.

What advice would you give to school leavers? It saddens me to hear of so many graduates leaving university without a close group of friends that they made there. My advice would be to not watch lectures online - attend them and actually meet people! There’s no way I would have got through the last few years without the amazing and supportive friends I met in boring classes we were forced to sit through together.

ADAM FERRIS (2010)Congratulations to Adam who we recently heard has achieved the following in 2014:• the advanced Chinese prize for

the best grades in Chinese at the University of Adelaide,

• an Undergraduate Achievement scholarship of US$5000 from the Golden Key International Honour Society,

• the Gold Scholarship from CRCC Asia (recruitment firm dealing with internships in Asia) to go to Shanghai and do an internship in Shanghai for a month,

• a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service to study and live in Berlin for six weeks,

• a nomination for an Australia Day award for “excellence in languages and cultures”.

AlEx MAnly (2013)Congratulations to Alex who recently received The Advertiser/Channel Seven Junior Sport Star of the Year for cycling.

Old Scholar News2013 Australian Vocational PrizesIt brings me great pleasure to announce that two former 12 students were recently awarded certificates and $2000 each in the 2013 Australian Vocational Student Prize. AMy MAHOMET (2013) who completed her Certificate III in Aged Care and JAy WAGHORn (2013) who completed a Certificate III in Plumbing as part of an Australian School-Based Apprenticeship with Alexandrina Plumbing were both very worthy winners.

These two students excelled in their chosen fields, not only successfully combining their vocational studies with their school studies, but setting themselves up for their chosen career paths. Jay is now working as a full-time apprentice with Alexandrina Plumbing, whilst Amy who is working full time at The Hahndorf Residential Care Services

Facility, has just completed her Certificate III in Disability Work and is planning on studying part-time a Diploma in Children’s Services. We wish them both all the best with their futures.

Old Scholar News

On Saturday 18 November we had the pleasure of hosting the ‘Founding Students’ for their 20 Year Reunion. The Class of 1994, who were the first

students at our College, were taken on a tour of the

school to see the development over the past 20 years.

After the tour they met at the Barker Hotel where they socialised with the ‘Founding Staff’ and our first Principal Mal Wegener, who kept us all entertained with stories about the first years at Cornerstone. It was a wonderful night to chat and reminisce with the Old Scholars about their life since Cornerstone and the journeys which they have taken.

Twenty Year Reunion

Year 10 Experience - Sydney ArtsThe Sydney Arts Experience is just one of the brilliant Year 10 Experience options our students have. For those students who a considering a career in the Arts it is truly life changing as it enables them to dream big and feel that anything is possible.

One of the highlights of the Sydney Arts Tour is a 4 hour party boat cruise around the Harbour where the students enjoy dancing on the deck under under the twinkling lights of Sydney’s skyscrapers reflected in the glasslike water. We invite old scholars from Cornerstone College to join us on the cruise where they talk to the Year 10s and give invaluable advice about their own journeys from Cornerstone College to working within the Arts Industry in Sydney.

This year we were joined by Ian Runeckles who has been training and working as an actor in Sydney for around five years. Joel Siviour who works as a band booking agent in the music industry. Nathan Cox who is an

actor and the host of Wakakiri all over Australia. Rachel Williams who has been following her dreams of working as an actor in theatre and film and Georgia Raison, one of our recent graduates who just finished teaching Drama at Camp America and is now exploring her options in Perth and Sydney.

I personally think it is one of the most important parts of the trip as the Year 10s are really able to see first-hand what it could be like for them and start considering exciting prospects for their futures. I believe the whole trip is a life changing experience for so many of the students. Having the opportunity to experience acting workshops at NIDA, participating in art classes at Brett Whitely, film making at the Australian Film School, walking around the incredible galleries, soaking in the atmosphere around the Opera House, the Bridge, Circular Quay and the historical Rocks district. Seeing a big musical such as Wicked, Grease, Hairspray. Watching TV and radio being created at the ABC Studios. There really was something for everyone.

And to Sydney, the beautiful city that we all have fallen in love with, I will dedicate the words used by Glinda and Elphaba in the incredible musical Wicked, that we were so lucky to see this year. ‘Because I knew you, I have been changed for good.’

It’s hard to believe that 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of Cornerstone College. The College began in 1990 with 49 students, and today there are nearly 1,000 students from Years 7–12. To celebrate this significant milestone there will be a 25th Anniversary Dinner Dance on Saturday, 8 August 2015. If you have been involved with Cornerstone in any way over the last 25 years then this is an event for you! More details to come, but for now please note this date in your diary.
