was evaluted. Training in live fire
environments where we can make a
variety of scenarios is vital to
understanding the data. Using the FAST

experimentation by allowing the
firefighters to control the volume and
quality of fire and flow paths of smoke to
see both the positive and adverse effects
of their actions in a safe setting.

department’s “burn pan”. A total of thirty-
five employees were trained.

YEAR IN REVIEW JULY July 15, 1582 NW 124th Street: A grill fire ignited the exterior of a house. Siding on the residence started to melt but showed no signs of burning. AUGUST
August 13, 1975 NW 92nd Court: Crews
arrived to a single story commercial
structure with smoke showing from a self
-extinguished fire on the front side of one
suite. Several suites
were ventilated to
remove smoke.
Investigation by Clive
Police and Fire
personnel confirm the
fire was intentionally set
early in the night.
Damage was estimated
at $25,000.
August 14, 1815 NW 82nd Street: Crews
arrived to find a two story residential
duplex with the front door open and a
light haze visible. An occupant advised
she had opened the dryer door to find
towels on fire inside and threw water on
them. Investigation revealed damage
was limited to the appliance. Damage
was estimated at $1,000.
August 24, 1300 Block of 100th: Two
vehicles were involved in a crash,
resulting in one
driver being unable
to exit the vehicle.
Crews used
hydraulic extrication
tools to open the
door and gain access. Two patients were
transported to the hospital.
Thank You: A nice young lady and her
mother stopped by
Station 32 to thank
the crew for
assisting with a
serious seizure
episode.
Search and Rescue Training: Crews
worked with the
Windsor Heights Fire

practice search and
victim removal.
Crews entered the
house in search teams with obscured
masks to search for victims and remove
them. Crews also practiced various
victim drags, discussed search
techniques, and reviewed basic building
construction.
SEPTEMBER
September 5, 2100 100th Street: A
shooting was reported at 7-Flags Events
Center. Crews arrived to find a chaotic
scene. Two victims
were identified and
a third victim was
deceased. Due to
severity of injuries
and an unstable
scene, Clive and
West Des Moines ambulance crews
quickly removed and transported two
patients. One of the transported patients
later died of gunshot injuries. L325
remained on scene throughout the night
to assist police with lighting for their
investigation.
September 13, 2065 NW 129th Street:
E220 responded on a smoke
investigation. The homeowner indicated
a tree in the backyard took a lightning
strike over night and now they could
smell smoke in the mechanical room in
the basement. Some outlets in the
basement were found to be scorched.
The yard was checked, and several holes
were blown into the sod. No active or
smoldering fire was found and the
homeowner was encouraged to contact
an electrician.
September 27, 1725 NW 86th Street:
Ladder 325 responded to Kum and Go
for a vehicle on fire at the gas pumps.
They arrived to find a small flame coming
from the gasoline fill port. The fire was
quickly extinguished with a dry chemical
extinguisher. A disposable lighter was
discovered right below the point of the
fire on the ground. It was later
determined by watching surveillance
camera footage from Kum and Go that
the son intentionally lit the car on fire.
Station 32 Signage
Upgrade: The Clive
Firefighter’s Association
championed and
funded a number of
facility improvements,
including new signage
on the front and west

was appointed Full-Time.
Blake had two years of part-
time service with Clive.
New Part-Time Hires: The following
personnel were hired to begin their
orientation process in January; Adam
Hilgenberg, Chris Petrick, Kyle Brown,
Matthew Hager, and Scott Towers.
54th Annual Santa Day: December 17th
marked this annual tradition. Seven
Santa Stops were held throughout the
community. Temperatures and winds
were from the North Pole, causing a much
smaller turnout than normal.
Rapid Intervention Training: Scenarios at
an acquired structure on Emerald Isle
incorporated RIC skills. They were applied
to multiple FF rescues within a set time
period. Clive and Urbandale crews had
“downed firefighters”. Obstacles were set
within the structure
which block the path
the RIC crews would
normally use to
access a downed
firefighter.
