Who must take MQA? All meat animal project members (even those who have animals that are pets) must participate in a Meat Quality Assurance Program (MQA).

· Once as a Junior Member (ages 8 - 13 years old · Once as a Senior Member (14 - 18 years old) ¨ All new 4-H livestock members ¨ Those who turned 14 during the 2017 calendar Why MQA? It is a Colorado 4-H requirement

and the Larimer County Fair and Jr. Livestock Sale Committee also require livestock members to complete this program before they can participate in the 2018 Fair and Jr. Livestock Sale.

What is considered a meat animal project? Meat animal projects include all breeding and market livestock in the following species: Beef Cattle, Dairy Cattle, Goats (Pygmy, Dairy Goat, Breeding Meat Goat, Market Goat), Poultry (Geese, Duck, Chicken, Turkey, Pigeon), Rabbit, (including Pet Rabbit), Sheep and Swine.

What if I am taking the Swine project? To meet Pork Quality Assurance (PQA) requirements, you must do the following, based on your age group:

¨ Youth 8-11 years of age (Beginner): Attend MQA/PQA training annually

¨ Youth 12-14 years of age (Intermediate) OR 15-18 years of age (Advanced): Certify/re-certify for one year by attending MQA/PQA training OR you can certify for the entire age group by completing and passing an examination at the appropriate age level. To certify by examination, a minimum of 70% of questions must be correctly answered. Therefore, we will test and score all Swine youth on site following the hands-on MQA/PQA activities this year. This will allow them to be certified until they reach the next age group.

The Larimer County Fair and the Colorado State Fair require swine exhibitors to be PQA certified.

When is MQA/PQA training offered for 2018?

Please bring your Horse Manual, if you have one. Members will create a question bank and enjoy playing mock Horse Bowl games.

Come to as many practices as you can! Those members who are interested can form teams and if desired, enter the County Horse Bowl Contest.

Register for practices now!

All project horses must have a Colorado 4-H Horse ID. Horse IDs are online only through 4honline. Please indicate whether you own or lease your horse on the ID form. Lease forms are not required.

The online system is open and ready to add your horse now. The deadline for completing the Colorado 4-H Horse Identification form online is May 1.

Even if you already filled out a Horse ID online last year, please make sure it is still there for this year.

To fill out your Horse ID online, go to: co.4honline.com Sign in, go to your name, click “edit”, then “animals/livestock”, choose “Horse”, then click add animal. Fill out form and save.

Remember to print the ID for your Record Book.

A printed copy of your online Colorado 4-H Horse ID is required for your Horse Record Book.

Directions for printing an Animal ID:

Log in to 4honline using your family email.

Go to the Member Page. Scroll down to the list of family members and click on “edit”

next to your name (just like when you were registering).

Click on the “Animal/Livestock” button at the top.

Click on the “Edit/View” button next to the animal. Click on “Print Animal Information” at the top.

Put on your warm riding clothes and brush off your wooly mount! The County is offering two more open ride nights in April. Most rides will be in the Ranch-Way Feeds Indoor Arena, with one scheduled in the Longhorn Outdoor Arena. Sign up now! Rides may be canceled due to extreme cold, icy roads or snowy weather. Watch your emails on the day of the rides. Questions? Contact Diane at [email protected] or 970-498-6016.

The Colorado 4-H Horse Show Rule Book has been revised for 2018. All 4-H Horse Project members will receive a copy of the new Rule Book with a white cover. Please make sure you are using the correct Rule Book for your project activities.

All disciplines have a mandatory information/safety orientation meeting at the start of the project. If you do not have equipment, please do not purchase equipment until after the safety and information orientation. If you have equipment already, please bring it to this meeting to be checked and approved. Special note: Practices will be held unless severe, inclement weather arises. See Master Calendar for all practice dates/times/locations for each discipline.

Larimer County offers nine shooting sport disciplines: Archery, Air Rifle, Air Pistol, Shotgun, .22 Rifle, .22 Pistol, Muzzleloading, Western Heritage and Outdoor Skills. Larimer County requires that all 4-H participants attend a minimum of four (4) county practices for each discipline in which they wish to participate in the county shooting competitions. (see Shooting Sports Policy) Practices are not required to complete a shooting sports project. To complete a shooting sports project you must complete a record book and present a topic or display board over something in your discipline. The County Shoots are held in late June and July, generally on a weekend. A youth must participate in a county shoot to qualify for the state competition. To participate in a state competition a youth must have a hunter education certificate. A bow hunter card is satisfactory for archery participants. Larimer County requires members to exhibit at the county fair in order to participate in the State Shooting Competitions.

Larimer County 4-H Shooting Sports has established the following uniform required practices policy. All participants must attend a minimum of four (4) county practices for each discipline in which they wish to participate in the County Shoot. If the youth is participating in .22 rifle and air rifle, the youth must attend two practices in each rather than four in each. The information, orientation and/or safety meetings are required, but do not count as a practice. Two club practices conducted by a state certified leader in the discipline will count if the following conditions are met: List of planned Club practices must be sent to the Extension Office by April 1. A list of additional practices should be submitted one week prior to the time the practice is held. Other 4-H members who call may participate in the practice provided the range will accommodate increased numbers. The attendance list must be signed by the certified 4-H Shooting Sports Leader and sent to the 4-H Extension Agent within a week for the practice to count.

2018 Shooting Sports Clinics are being offered to 4-H Leaders and Teen Leaders at the locations listed below. Training details and registration are open now through 4honline. No late registrations will be accepted, so sign up early.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture and Tri-County Health Department have confirmed that an alpaca in Douglas County has died due to a rabies infection. Pet owners are urged to check records to en-sure rabies vaccinations are up-to-date. Livestock can also be infected with rabies and owners are encouraged to discuss the risk of rabies ex-posure with their local veterinarian.

According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Envi-ronment, so far in 2018, 32 animals from Colorado have tested positive for rabies – mostly in skunks. Of those, 12 rabid animals were known or strongly suspected of exposing 33 domestic pets, 7 livestock ani-mals, and 2 people.
