POPULAR CLOWNFISH Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion Ocellaris).

Everyone who has a clownfish either has one or has had one in the past. It’s cheap, plentiful and great for beginners.

Percula Clownfish (Amphiprion Percula). Just as popular as the Ocellaris Clownfish, but

more expensive, not as common but just as hardy.

ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE The research estimates that by 2011, Taiwan

could breed 2 million clownfish and generate $100 million in the lucrative ornamental fish market, while helping save the species in the wild.

200,000 clownfish can generate $10 million in revenues annually.

Tomato clownfish have a positive economic importance for humans through the pet trade industry.

LIFE CYCLE Hatching usually takes from 6 to 15 days. The clownfish have a larval period of between 10 and

20 days. From day three to eight the larvae will grow very fast. Day eight to eleven are dangerous days. This is the

timeframe when the larvae start to look like adults and metamorphosize. During this time the larvae are more tolerant to water

conditions however they can be very sensitive to fright. Its best not to move the small clownfish until they have

reached atleast 14 days or until all have metamorphosized.

From time of hatch to attaining a size of 2.5 to 3cm can take 12 weeks.

BREEDING The ideal setup for clownfish larvae is to have a

central standpipe in the round tank and have around the standpipe a mesh screen of between 100 and 300 microns. The different mesh sizes are used for different sized live

feeds such as rotifers and artemia. Water overflows into a sump where there is biological

filtration and mechanical filtration. A low volume pump then pumps water back to the

tank at a very slow rate, just enough to cause the water to slowly circulate and keep the larvae moving.

An airstone may be required in the centre of the tank along the side of the screen to ensure that it does not block up.

FEEDING For the first two days live food densities

should be kept high. Live bait and micro-organisms, such as

rotifers and copepods, are needed to suit the needs of the larvae.

Pellet diet is only fed to the fry after they grow to 20-day-olds. Sustainable Aquatics created their own food that

is high in protein, vitamins and vegetation material to ensure high growth.

WATER CHEMISTRY The water quality should be kept high and

the water well circulated. The temperature should be around 24°C -

27°C. The salinity at 27-30 ppt . The pH from 8.0 to 8.4. An ideal larval rearing tank is a round plastic

or fibreglass tank with a water holding capacity of between 50 and 150 liters.

The tanks can be setup as having a filter and reticulating water or stand alone and just using airstones and partial water changes.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES Advantages

Low mortality. Accustomed to

people. Easy to acclimate. Bright and beautiful

coloration.

Disadvantages Aggressive and

territorial. Some species can be

expensive.
