On behalf of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, we’re happy to welcome you to ACLP 2018 in Orlando, Florida. ACLP President James Rundell, MD, FACLP, has chosen the conference theme of Branding C-L Psychiatry: Defining the Breadth and Depth of Our Subspecialty.
Clinicians in consultation-liaison psychiatry face a wide breadth of conundrums and controversies in all areas of practice. Our objective for this meeting is to highlight the subspecialties within our subspecialty! Our program this year touches not only on the nuances of the multiple subspecialties within C-L psychiatry, but also will review information imperative for any practicing C-L psychiatrist.
Here’s a preview of what you can experience at Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry 2018:
ɤ An all-day Essentials of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry preconference course, featuring nine speakers discussing updates on current C-L topics, presented free to members (who also register for the annual meeting) on Tuesday, Nov. 13, then repeated on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at half-price for members
ɤ Eight preconference Skills Courses on Wednesday, Nov. 14
ɤ Six TED-style plenaries by experts who will get straight to the point exploring clinical issues (geriatric, neuropsychiatry, child and adolescent) and timely administrative, education, and research topics
ɤ Two special half-day research forums: Maintaining Your Momentum with Your Research, 1:00-5:00 PM, Tuesday, Nov. 13, members only; and Getting Started with Research, 8:00AM - 12:00 PM, Wednesday, Nov. 14. Both sessions are free; the Tuesday session will include CME
ɤ Maximizing Mentorship Relationships Throughout Our Careers, a special evening session on Wednesday, Nov. 14, for members only, that will aim to enhance mentoring relationships – both giving and receiving mentorship
ɤ 145+ scientific posters; 42 oral papers; 77 General Sessions
ɤ More networking time and social events to build your connections with C-L professionals: no-presentation lunches, the ever-popular members’ welcome reception, and a champagne toast reception on Friday celebrating the Academy’s award winners
ɤ Special Interest Group meetings
ɤ Career Consultations for early career psychiatrists (members only)
ɤ Easy access to Orlando’s local theme parks and attractions, with free shuttles from the hotel and Academy-exclusive discounted tickets
ɤ Up to 39.75 hours of CME credit that can be earned over the five days of the meeting

We recommend calling the night before for operating hours, (407) 938-9433.
International Drive (1 mile)Shop, dine, explore, and have a blast on “I-Drive”, arguably one of Orlando’s most famous addresses. Brimming with attractions including theme parks, nightlife, miniature golf, and museums, this area has something for everyone.
SeaWorld® Orlando (6 miles)Discover sharks, whales, penguins, and more at this thrilling theme park, which features up-close tours, fascinating exhibits, amazing shows and exciting rides, including their newest thrill ride, MAKO.
Universal Studios Resort™ (10 miles)Learn more about your favorite movies and take a spin on one of the exhilarating rides at this theme park, which just happens to be a working film and television studio.

The Eleanor and Thomas P. Hackett Memorial Award is the Academy’s highest honor. It is presented to a member who has demonstrated distinctive achievements in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry training, research, clinical practice, and leadership.
The award was established in 1988 to honor Thomas P. Hackett, Jr., MD, FACLP, professor and chief of the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital 1974-1988 and president of the Academy 1987-88. Dr. Hackett was a long-time leader in the field of C-L Psychiatry. He died of a heart attack at age 59, two months after he took office as president of the Academy. The first Hackett award was presented in 1989 to Edwin H. Cassem, MD, FACLP, who also succeeded Dr. Hackett as chief of psychiatry at MGH, 1989-2000.
In 2009 the award was renamed to include Dr. Hackett’s wife, Eleanor, who passed away of leukemia in April 2009. “Ellie” had presented the award at the annual meeting almost every year since its inception. She received the Academy’s Special Recognition Award in 2003.

The Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry requires disclosure by all program planners and presenters of CME activities of any financial or other affiliation with commercial organization(s) that may have a direct or indirect interest in the subject matter of the educational activity. A “financial interest” may include but is not limited to: being an employee and/or being a shareholder in the organization; being on retainer with the organization; or having research or honoraria paid by the organization. An “affiliation” may include holding a position on an advisory committee, speakers’ bureau or some other role or benefit to a supporting organization.
ACLP administers a process by which potential conflicts are identified and resolved prior to the educational activity. Furthermore, the audience of each session must be informed of the presenters’ or program planners’ affiliations with every commercial interest by acknowledging such in the printed program and orally or visually (incorporated into slide presentation) at the start of a session.
ACLP only identifies active disclosure information, meaning that the absence of a speaker from this list indicates that neither they, nor an immediate member of their family have any financial relationships or potential conflict of interest to disclose.

As the volume of literature in the fields of psychotherapy and psycho-somatics continues to grow, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep abreast of new and important developments, and to have independent, critical views on key clinical issues concerned with assessment and treatment of mental disorders. Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics has progressively increased its reputation for independence, originality and methodological rigor. It has anticipated and developed new lines of research concerned with psychosomatic medicine, psychotherapy re-search and psychopharmacology. The journal features editorials and reviews on current and controversial issues; innovations in assessment and treatment; case management articles; original investigations; lit-erature updates; and a lively correspondence section. It has become a unique and vital reference to current research and practice, the home of innovative thinking at the interface between medical and behav-ioral sciences.

IntegratIng psychosomatIc care across medIcal settIngs and specIaltIes
Psychosomatic medicine is THE multi-disciplinary arena where different medical specialties explore the interrelationship between bodily processes and social, psychological and psychiatric factors. Clinical courses of mental processes affecting medical outcomes and, vice versa, somatic processes influencing mental well-being constitute our main field of interest. Diverse clinical disciplines, ranging from medical psychology to psychiatry, neurology, internal medicine, surgery, including various somatic subspecialties, are involved in the effort to understand the physiological pathways in psychosomatic conditions and, at least in an ideal world, to advocate multi-disciplinary management. However, integration of care (i.e., bringing together diverse specialty skills and expertise in complex cases of multi-morbidity simultaneously) still remains a difficult process in psychosomatics. Whereas the aspiration to integrate medical and mental health care is widespread, integrated care services are yet hard to find. In order to avoid unintended negative outcomes due to under-detection of psychosomatic complexity or treatment refractoriness in fragmented mono-disciplinary trajectories, integration of care is deemed necessary at the hospital level between medical specialties and between the medical hospital and primary care. The 2019 EAPM annual conference will provide lectures, symposia, workshops and master classes starting from different medical specialty perspectives on the pathophysiology and treatment of psychosomatic syndromes. In order to inform the field on current etiologic concepts another focus is on symptom formation and what constitutes to psychosomatic complexity. Furthermore, clinical efforts will be presented on when and where integrated care could be delivered to foster a multi-disciplinary network approach, which may connect medical specialties across healthcare settings.
We hope to see you next year in Rotterdam. On behalf of the conference committees,
Carsten Leue
